Visted Federal American Grill this past Saturday evening for a big family dinner set up by my brother-in-law and his wife. We were greeted and seated where we checked out the menu and ordered a bottle of wine to go with our appetizers, Bang Bang Shrimp and Poke. Our appetizers were amazingly delicious as we picked out our entrees. Federal American Grill was very regal looking from the outside and even more so on the inside. The wait service was impeccable and top notch while the menu was simple American fair. My wife went with the Roasted Chicken, I chose the Chicken Fried Steak and my 15 year old granddaughter picked the Blackened Chicken Alfredo. We received our meals and were completely underwhelmed. Our portions were extremely small but a lot of time went into the presentation of the meals. As for the taste, it was just okay. Even my granddaughter, who is not hard to impress, was not enthusiastic about one of her favorite meals. I visited this restaurant on a weeknight during their happy hour. My intent was not to come for their happy hour though. They're one of the larger restaurants in town I'd say. Their drink menu (entire front) was quite large and almost overwhelming. Luckily I just stuck to iced tea this time. I looked over the menu and sampled one happy hr item (oysters rockefeller) and 2 of their signature dishes, the meatloaf and the short rib. Oysters Rockefeller- I've never been a huge fan of baked as I prefer chargrilled ones much better. Reson is mainly because the topping on a Rockefeller overpowers the taste of the actual oyster. Oysters this evening were from the east coast and small, so you definitely couldn't really taste them. Meatloaf - has a better presentation but is kinda mushy and sweet partly due to the red bell peppers in the mixture. Comes with onion rings over mashed potatoes which are pretty average. Short rib - pretty average short rib plate with risotto but I thought it was better than the meatloaf. I should have tried a cocktail and a dessert since they had several cocktails and a couple desserts that looked good but I was in a hurry to get to my next stop that evening, so I skipped. Service was excellent as the server kept coming back frequently everytime I needed something. Ambiance is nice and upscale, but also has a casual vibe. I figured the restaurant would start to get busier later on the evening but the night I ended up coming turned out to be a slow night I guess. We came in at 5 on a Monday to enjoy the happy hour specials and the warm ambiance. I ordered a Strawberry Lemon Drop for $7 and it was refreshing without being too sweet. We decided to order multiple of the HH appetizers as our meal including: Fried Green Tomatoes, Bang Bang Shrimp, Tuna Poke, Meatballs, and Rockefeller Oysters. The stand out were the Bang Bang Shrimp! I would say the meatballs were my second favorite as they were moist and came on a bed of mashed potatoes. The tuna was very fresh and well paired with the avocado. The oysters were what's expected but I was disappointed that my second had a little shell in it. We visited for dinner and found the restaurant busy and quite loud, making it difficult to hold a conversation without raising our voices. We started with the ribs and thick-cut bacon as appetizers, both pretty solid. For my entrée, I ordered the 8oz filet with truffle mac & cheese and swapped the sautéed spinach for Brussels sprouts. While the filet was cooked well, the truffle mac & cheese had an artificial truffle taste and was overpoweringly salty. The Brussels sprouts were the biggest letdown--they didn't taste fresh, had an odd sour flavor, and their texture was off. Given the price point, there are other restaurants in town that offer better quality and value. I'd think twice before returning. read more

These factors alone are enough to make me a regular. As a bonus, the food is of top notch quality. My favorite is Janice's meatloaf. Lastly, the joint has a speakeasy vibe, which is warm and welcoming. The figurative "cherry on top" is the cornbread and accompanying jelly. Tell them Scott of the SA Syndicate sent you. The entrees came all by themselves with no sides, except for a few main courses. I would certainly return for delicious food, this the four stars. So this was my first time going year I've always added them on the freeway and I finally got to go. It was my birthday so I dressed up and drove , my boyfriend and I got there and it wasn't packed so we were a little worried but the wait staff was nice our waitress was lovely and even suggested some great picks I had the stuffed chicken (7/10) and tomato basil(10/10) soup it was hot and delicious and he had the meatloaf(3/10) and he got a chopped salad. This place is a 10 out of 10 for me. I truly don't say that about many places. From the service, to the food made from scratch, to the ambiance. It is a new favorite. Driven by it 100 times, and it's been on my list of places to try for a long time, so we decided to check it out for date night tonight. It didn't disappoint at all. From the minute you walk up to the door, smiling faces open the door for you, and warmly greet you. The interior is beautiful and has a semi intimate glow. They offer indoor and outdoor seating, with two private rooms for larger parties. Our waitress Kenzie was AMAZING!! She provided us with excellent customer service, along with great recommendations. One of the managers, Jason, was super friendly and welcoming. He consistently checked in to ensure we were having a great dining experience during our first visit. The care was upscale dining treatment. Was truly impressed. The food was amazing. They greet you with warm biscuits that are delicious and soft. It's served with butter and a pepper jelly. My favorite was the jelly. I wanted something fruity and bubbly to drink, so our waitress recommended the Fizzy Lifting Drink. It was perfect size, and met the expectation of what I wanted. They have a wide selection of whiskey, wines and cocktails. For appetizer we ordered the raw oysters. They were fresh, and served with horseradish, seasoned cocktail sauce and vinegar sauce. While we didn't try the vinegar, we throughly enjoyed the cocktail sauce. 10 out of 10 as it reminded me of getting fresh oyster shooters in Trinidad & Tobago. Dinner was comforting and hearty. Before ordering, our waitress was kind enough to let me try the bordelaise sauce before I decided on an entree. It was so delicious. I had the roasted chicken with mashed potatoes, and broccolini. The chicken was cooked perfectly, and portion size was great for the price. My husband had the braised short rib with the bacon & mushroom risotto and broccolini. I tried the short rib, and it reminded me of pot roast. It gave me that warm fuzzy feeling inside. Ending on a sweeter note, we had the bourbon bread pudding and the double chocolate brownie. Both were absolutely delightful. There were no raisins in the bread pudding, which I definitely appreciated. No offense to raisins, but I prefer not to have it in my bread pudding. We will definitely return to try other dishes. This was a memorable dinner between the food and the service. It's not a cheap meal, but it's worth it. I've spent more for food that wasn't as good. Important to note that gratuity is automatically added to your check. Doesn't bother me because the service was exceptional, but for those that do mind, just make note. I personally wouldn't let it deter you from trying this restaurant though. Parking is convenient. read more

I came here often in the past. We ordered our meals which were good but something happened with our drink orders that is so crazy to me. I'm still confused and scratching my head in disbelief... We had two drinks with our meal. Our 3rd drink order never arrived. We asked "why" and were told that we had been "cut off" and they "weren't comfortable" serving us any more drinks. The manager even came to our table to let us know this..... We had two drinks with our meal while celebrating my daughters birthday. We aren't the type of people that have ever been loud, disruptive or intoxicated. We've never acted that way! The situation was strange and I would never feel comfortable coming here again. I had the meatloaf, and it was very filling and a good portion. Another diner with me had the chicken fried chicken (CFC). He said it was good, but the portion was EXTREMELY small. In fact, I have never seen a smaller one anywhere. I would have been disappointed if I ordered that. These aren't Texas-sized CFC. We had drinks at the bar beforehand. They were great. We started with some bang bang shrimp that were pretty good. The batter was a bit thicker than I prefer, but still good. I then ordered from the Houston Restaurant Week menu. Caesar salad, braised short rib with creamy bacon risotto and bread pudding for dessert. It was all very good. Nice portions for the $55 for all 3 courses. My husband had the ribeye and it was very tasty and cooked to perfection. This was our first time but won't be the last. As we left we realized how blessed we were in the Whisky Room as the rest of the place was much louder and did not have as good of air conditioning. If you have a group, ask to book that room! Amazing Service! Let me tell you a true story: A member of our party was super health conscious, and wanted Topo Chico mineral water with dinner. They were either out or didn't carry that brand and were very apologetic. The manager heard about it and sent a busboy down to the local Specs to buy Topo Chico for her and didn't even charge us. Man when does that happen? White cloth tablecloths, your water glass will never get more than an inch low, the wait staff checks on you every 5 minutes. In 2023 this level of service is unheard of. I went here for an event with some girlfriends and the service during this time was amazing. The food was really good as well. I had the Benedict with pork belly. Delicious gravy and the biscuits were soft and fluffy. After I was done with my event I decide to go to the bar to finish my drink since everyone else had left. The bartender was awesome. There was three gentleman at the bar who were very nice and funny who we ended up all Chatting and having a great time. Then Jason the manager cut us off from ordering anymore drinks. This is where my experience went bad and I will never go there again. Jason was very rude and stated we were too loud and disrupting the other guest. I spoke up and defended myself by letting him know because we are laughing and having a good time we are defending people. He stated to me that I was proving his point by my behavior. My issue with this is me speaking up for myself does not mean I have had too much to drink it means I don't take being treated badly and will stand up for myself. What I feel should have happened and how Jason could have handled this was coming over to the gentleman drinking that because of the high percentage of alcohol they were being served they wouldn't be able to serve them anymore because of his responsibility and safety of them leaving and driving. That we can stay and enjoy anymore appetizers or water or beer but we can't serve anymore hard liquor. He could have came over and politely Told these gentleman this.
