I look around at the hours again, but next to it is a "we're open" sign. I try maybe 3-4 times more before I give up. I walk to the window and he's sitting at a table toward the back, looking at me. We just look at each other, then he looks at his computer. I turn toward my car, then turn back around and he's still looking at me! I sat in my car, confused. He never looked back up from his computer, so I left. Highly disappointed.

I had to leave 1 star, and honestly they don't even deserve that. This bakery has completely gone downhill, especially over the last two years. The customer service has always been mediocre, but now it's outright awful. The only reason people keep going back is for the icing, because it certainly isn't for the way customers are treated. I've ordered cakes from them for years and never once had an issue placing simple orders with a couple days' notice. Now suddenly, for the last two orders in just three months, I was told I needed an entire week's notice -- for extremely basic cakes. No special design, no extravagant request, nothing complicated at all. Instead of trying to help a loyal customer, they acted inconvenienced that I even asked. What's most disappointing is how little they seem to value the people who keep them in business. The atmosphere feels cold, rude, and completely unprofessional. The employees come across irritated and dismissive, which usually says a lot about how a business is run behind the scenes. It's uncomfortable walking into a place where customers are clearly treated like a burden. Small businesses constantly ask communities to "shop local" and support them over chains, but experiences like this make that hard to justify. Supporting small businesses should mean supporting people who care about their customers and appreciate loyalty -- not businesses that act entitled to it while providing terrible service. It's genuinely a shame because this bakery used to have a good reputation, but now it feels like they survive solely because of habit and not because they actually deserve returning customers anymore. If you're looking for the best bakery in St. Louis, look no further than Federhofer's Bakery. With hours that other area bakeries can't match, you can get the early morning treat you've been craving. Plus, you won't break the bank - prices here are cheaper than at the bakery section of Schnucks. The quality of the goods is unbeatable. I've had pies, cakes, strudels, cookies, and bread, and they've all been exceptional. Their pineapple cake and raspberry amaretto cake are to die for, and if you visit in the fall, you won't want to miss out on their amazing concord grape pie. All I can say is YUM! I ordered a birthday cake. The cake was soooo dry that it was inedible. Only 2 small pieces had been cut. Federhoffer's insisted that the cake be brought back to their store before they would issue a credit. Would not go back there again. McArthur's Bakery is a much better choice! They prefer not to inconvenience the customer. read more
