this was probably one of the best sushi places I've ever been to- everything from the restaurant ambiance to the food to the service was just amazing. the restaurant is dimly lit and very cozy, reminding me a lot of the sushi bars in japan. they offer lots of small plates and a large assortment of nigiri/sashimi. I love how their focus is on the cuts and quality of fish and they don't offer any crazy rolls. my friend and I ordered the 10 piece chef's selection sashimi, 4 types of bluefin tuna nigiri, and the salmon sashimi. the sushi was all so incredibly fresh and buttery and the chef's selection was a great assortment. Great mix of sushi and izakaya dishes, with many seasonal/daily specials--- really a great mix for everyone looking to quench their Japanese hunger. We ordered a ton, but still so much to look forward to for next time.. Everything we had was delicious, and fresh. Wait staff was very friendly and helpful. The vibe is really artsy and cool, with tons of little signs organized on one wall. Place can hold a large group party too. Parking will be the normal "hard to find" street parking, and place is a bit far from a garage. So don't recommend driving if you can. We returned on a Thursday around 5:30pm for dinner. Got a table immediately. Restaurant was only 15% full. Friendly waitstaff. Ordered the omakase sashimi 10pcs, miso walu, anago nigiris, muki hotate 3pcs sashimi and king sake toro 3pcs sashimi to share with my partner. Sushi tasted fresh. Originally wanted anago as a 3pcs sashimi but the chef recommended it as a nigiri. I recommend not to pour any soy sauce into the dish because all the sushi was already dressed and we were reminded by the chef each time. Bill after tip came out to about $170. Our waitress was so sweet and honest about recommending the best dishes for our $ and flavor profile. Went here for dinner on a Saturday night around 8pm. Called ahead and got a reservation for two but there were empty tables when we arrived so you may not need to do that. Staff was very friendly and the place is cute and has anime decorations. We got the five piece omakase nigiri and a selection of four nigiri and shared some tapas. To me, the tapas were the star of the show. We got the ika and uni, baked baby scallops with uni, the shishito peppers, and the miso soup. The scallops were phenomenal! It comes with two little bites on two scallop shells and since it's baked there's a delicious caramelization that blends well with the uni and scallop. Must try! They ika and uni I recommend as well. I also recommend the king sake toro (it's torched) and the o toro. Some of the nigiri like the scallop one had too much wasabi for me. Cute spot if you're in the area! read more

Fenikkusu serves some interesting dishes that you wouldn't find at your typical Japanese restaurant. As the name says they serve tapas (ie small portion) dishes and specialize in sushi. The mini kaisen don is the real star of the menu and is a well thought out balance of sashimi rice, aromatics and salmon roe for some brininess. The mentaiko pasta is also a really awesome dish. I would come back here for these two dishes. I also enjoyed the corn fritters and the mackerel. Came here for an early dinner on a Thursday with some friends. I would def make a reservation if you come on a weekend or even for a later dinner. We got a couple of things to share but the dish that stood out the most was definitely this don with ikura, toro, and uni. After mixing it it was the perfect bite. The mentaiko udon was also really good as well as the hamachi carpaccio. This is such a great spot for a smaller group dinner or a cute date night. With only one full table, I knew something was amiss. The mission is usually packed with people during dinner time on a Sunday night. This place was practically empty. Waygu beef carpaccio was overcooked. Like carpaccio is supposed to be on the rare side, but I knew from looking at it that it would be a fail. Eating it only proved my point. Maguro zuke was just okay, and so was the O-toro. Had better elsewhere. My uni and Toro bowl for almost $60 was not worth it. They let you order one per table, but my table didn't even like the one we ordered. The brown rice was dry, and the uni wasn't melt in your mouth buttery. The Toro tasted like it had been sitting in the Tupperware for a while. The fried Anago was plain and boring and came with tonkatsu sauce. They should season the batter. The asparagus was horrible. It had a lot of hard edges that should have been stripped off. It's unedible if you don't strip off the hard part. Waste of $8 or so. The sushi was just okay. We thought it was overpriced and really couldn't say it was super fresh or the best we ever had. Just overall disappointed. read more

This place checked all the boxes of an excellent SF sushi place, especially the all-important one: fresh, delicious fish. But what really sets this place apart and makes it special is the almost three-page tapas menu, which includes light bites categorized by cuisine (seafood, veggie, or "meat," e.g., beef). For mains, I ordered the chirashi and my wife ordered the 10-piece omakase nigiri -- each was delicious, with little further explanation necessary. But the tapas, oh man. So good, and such a fun part of the dining experience here to mix it up from your everyday great sushi (not that there's anything wrong with great sushi, of course!). We ordered a variety of items from the seafood and meat tapas menus -- carpaccio, scallops, ika and uni, and smelt fillets. All were excellent, but I especially loved the smelt fillets, which came with a side of salt that made them especially flavorful. All in all, a wonderful meal, made so -- in my opinion -- because of the diverse array of tapas to complement the stellar sushi. read more

I have a lot of sushi in SF, and don't sleep on Fenikkusu! I am a huge ikura uni lover, and their Uni Ikura Toro mini don is incredible $45 is a steal for the price and portion (light dinner). Mentaiko Udon is also great (although I prefer Bon Nene - this one is a great side dish to the don) I definitely satisfied my uni craving here. Deliciously fresh and inspiring food, as well as friendly service and a warm ambiance! Upon walking in, you're greeted at the door by friendly waitstaff, who immediatedly start taking care of you. For drinks, I recommend the yuzu ale for a light and fruity pairing to your meal. The hakkasain sake is stronger; more dry and fresh, but still light on the palate. Knowing this is a tapas restaurant, we opted for their sashimi omakase ($53 for 10 pieces), as well as a variety of their other small plates to make for a complete meal. I was impressed by the quality of everything! After we ordered, during our wait for our appetizers, the chef sent over a plate of their file fish jerky on the house to thank us for waiting (not even that long!). I was touched by the attention they paid their customers! The jerky was yummy; salty, umami, with a light chew, and when topped with the mayo, made for a creamy bite. What a great start to the meal! The hamachi was so fresh. The texture is soft, but still with a light chew. The dressing is lightly acidic and sour, just enough to lift the ocean brine out of the flavor. The tempura fish is a whole fish, filleted and fried! I think frying the fish whole allowed the moisture to stay inside the fish, while still getting a crispy exterior. The sauce is a nice complement to the light flavor; sweet and sour, but not overpowering. The sashimi omakase was delightful! - Tuna: slight briney flavor after eating. Fresh, tender, nice amount of pre applied wasabi. - Salmon: a little tough and drier, not as much flavor. - Hamachi: elegant smokey flavor. The texture is tougher. - Blue shrimp: flavorful, umami, a little sweet, chewy texture. - Otoro: The star of the sashimi plate. Super soft and melty and fatty! Beautiful. - Uni with salmon roe: sweet and savory, creamy, with the two parts working well together as a whole. The unagi with cucumbers is hearty! The warm, sweet and sourness melts in your mouth, and is brought higher by the crunchy freshness of the cucumber. I thought the ebi nigiri could use more flavor; the texture is kind of limp and bland, and the natural sweetness of the shrimp doesn't shine quite as much. The california roll has such creamy crab! The creaminess of the crab makes the whole bite cohesive. Lastly, the saffron mussels were a bit of a letdown. There were bits of broken shell throughout the stew, so you need to be careful. The flavor is floral from the saffron, spicy, and a little overly salty. The texture of the mussels are also a bit tough. Throughout our meal, we were given complimentary drinks thanks to it being my dining partner's birthday. At the end, the chef sent over some delicious tamago on the house! It was so fluffy and palate cleansing. I especially appreciate the hospitality by the staff here. I look forward to returning, and highly recommend this locals favorite spot! read more

They have a fairly simple menu but they definitely do everything well! We ordered the sashimi salad to share and it was the perfect way to start a meal. The fish was so fresh and the dressing they used complimented the salad perfectly! Also got the mentaiko udon and I think it's one of the best udon dishes I've ever had. I came here because my foodie friend who lives in the Mission called this spot a hidden gem, and she was 100% dead on! It's a great, affordable but still high-quality option when you're craving sushi but don't want to drop $200 on omakase at Robin, ju-ni, Wako, etc. It's also pretty easy to get a reservation (and I'm sure they can accommodate walk-ins too), which is another huge plus. As for the food, we shared a couple apps for the table including gyoza, maki, tuna avo, and hamachi carpaccio. I usually never order gyoza at restaurants cause I feel like it's generally not much better than the stuff you can pan fry at home, but this place's gyoza was AMAZING. Honestly the best gyoza I've ever had. We loved it so much we ordered it again. Most of us ordered nigiri of the omakase menu. Many of my friends got the 8 piece omakase nigiri. One thing to note for that is the nigiri are a bit smaller than standard-sized nigiri, so you definitely won't be satisfied just ordering that. But otherwise the sushi was great. I ordered nigiri a la carte, and my absolute favorites were the shima aji, tsuri aji, chu toro, o toro, king salmon toro, and of course the A5 wagyu. Things like o toro, fatty salmon, and wagyu you expect to be amazing, but I was particularly blown away by the shima aji. I could come back and order 8 of those and I wouldn't be upset about it! We also ordered the Wakatake Daiginjo sake which was FANTASTIC. I'm not a huge fan of sake in general, but they have very detailed descriptions of each sake's tasting notes on the alcohol menu, so I just went for the bottle that most closely matched my palette and was thoroughly impressed. The only negative thing is that they didn't have dessert when I came here :( And I'm a huge sweet tooth so that bummed me out. But you could always just head to one of the million dessert spots in the Mission afterward (which is what we did). Definitely will be coming back here and can't recommend it enough! read more

We came here for my friends birthday. She and her sister got the omakase 10 piece plus some maki and other raw fish. They loved it and kept raving about the sweet shrimp and the quality of the fish. I am a non- raw fish eater but was super happy with my beet salad, miso butter mushrooms and grilled Hamachi Kama. The service was great-- everyone was so nice and the ambiance was relaxed and cozy. I also thought it was pretty neat that the back room was covered in some great old school anime posters and fan stuff. read more

Came here with high spirits to celebrate Valentine's Day, omakase style! My spirit slowly diminished because of the way the service was throughout the dining, unfortunately. We had to obtain the waitress attention from the start to end. The main chef made us move a spot over to get the omakase out better to us (I thought it's for us to be become closer with the chef on the interaction thought, but no). The omakase and tapas were on point - standard, but if I'm paying for omakase and ordering up more in addition to it, I expect to have been treated better. The chef making the omakase, said to eat it quick since it doesn't taste good if we wait too long. I was taking my time taking pictures on the individual ones that were coming out that's why. What ticked my nerve the most was when I requested for a chef's special nigiri and the chef said I'm very busy for it for this evening. I don't have time right now. He straight out said to my face since I was sitting at the bar. I'm like thinking - wow you couldn't be more rude while I'm happily enjoying what you're serving out with my fiancé and you could have responded in a better way. This was for Valentine's. Nice romance nor love was in the air, but tension. They could have given us something else to substitute that tone of his, but didn't. I left bummed out and not a usual good feeling when I go for Omakase, which is horrible; to top it off, it was Valentine's. I would recommend going somewhere else in the city for omakase. There's plenty around and I went out of my way to go here. You'll be treated way better for the money that you're going to burn somewhere else. Wide variety of seafood options for their sashimi / nigiri. Highly recommend the marinated tuna, though everything is amazing. Service: The omakase was timed well in that we didn't feel rushed but also weren't questioning when our next piece would be served. Came here for Omakase and some Japanese tapas. Overall pretty good quality food + reasonable prices! Fairly casual setting as well but for upscale food. Omakase comes with 8 pieces for around $50-60. I had to order a couple extras cos ya girl needs 20 pieces, so I do wish they had a larger Omakase option! But I think it's because there are so many tapas that they also offer. Some of my favorite bites were: - uni (no surprise) - blue shrimp (loved how they topped with with a creamy sauce + pine nuts after searing) - halibut Some tapas we ordered; - Ika + uni (very good! I love squid and it was clever to use it like noodles) - mushrooms - delicious sesame sauce and huge portions - seared wagyu - some of my friends favorites, it was tender - mussels - I didn't love the sauce, but the mussels were tender The tapas came out slowly, I thought they would be done before the Omakase but I'm wondering if they lost our order in the kitchen since I had to follow up with the servers. The mussels ended up being the last thing that came out after I asked twice about them. Service was good, there was a bit of confusion and seating in the beginning where we were asked to move and move back so that was sort of annoying, but everything was figured out in the end and the staff was apologetic. Great quality sushi, pot, tapas, not overpriced, with unique offerings like : blue shrimp, engawa, oxtail soup, usutsukuri thinly sliced hirame We made a small uphill walk from mission district to the restaurant. It is in a charming neighborhood filled with beautiful houses. The staff was nice, it was easy when we visited to find outdoor seating and walk in without reservation, but the restaurant quickly got more and more popular and full throughout the night, so reservation will help. There were a few popular items sold out on the menu, which supposedly features fish from Japan. Many sushi options offer both nigiri with rice and without rice. That's pretty helpful. The quality was quite good: the blue shrimp aoebi is super good, delicious, fresh, uniquely found in only a few sushi places in sf. Engawa torched nigiri simply melts in your mouth, it was rich and delicious. The uni, eel were good classics, nothing too surprising. The salmon was okay. Not too tasty. The usutsuki thinly sliced plate of hirame fish which often showcases chef's skills was extremely well, done, well presented. That's hard to find in sf. What I love about this place is that in addition to offer fairly good quality sushi, they also offer tapas and nabe. This is great for friends who want something warm or prefer cooked food, or something not nigiri. The oxtail soup was well receive and loved, without tasty turnips, and fall-off-the bone slow cooked oxtail. We also tried the squid tapas (in wasabi) pretty good. The outdoor seating is limited, just two tables, but enclosed in a beautiful parklet, decorated with beautiful rows of lights. Overall great place, we will be back. Great spot for affordable omakase. Ask to be seated at the counter so you can get the pieces served one by one. I think at the tables, you just get a plate with all the pieces at once. How does this compare to higher end omakase spots? tbh I'm not a super discerning sushi eater, so it's hard for me to tell fish quality beyond a certain point, and in general I found the fish here reached that point. But I did find some pieces a bit too wasabi forward for me, and I could tell that the rice was sometimes a bit harder than ideal. Yes high end omakase will be better, but this is not a bad option for satisfying a craving. For our 8 piece omakase, we got: hirame (halibut) umi masu (ocean trout) shima aji (striped jack) bluefin tuna marinated in soy sauce king salmon toro tsuri aji (horse mackerel) ao ebi (grilled shrimp) chu toro My favorite of the pieces was the salmon belly. All of the pieces can also be ordered a la carte if you want to have more. We also ended up adding the iku-uni-himo which was quite tasty, especially if you like ikura. read more

We've been here multiple times. We have sat at a table and at the bar. I personally enjoy the table experience in the back room more as sitting at the bar is loud. The last time we were here, we sat at the bar. It was fun watching the sushi chef cut up the fish. The waitress was attentive. My favorites are the o toro, Chu toro and unagi nigiri. The shari (sushi rice) is koshihikari rice seasoned with red vinegar and brown sugar that gives the sushi rice a brown hue. For the price, the 8 pc omakase nigiri was good. The sushi rice was well-seasoned with a firm, chewy bite and the proper room temperature. Each piece was seasoned and/or garnished so there wasn't need for soy sauce. But light on the wasabi so I did ask for extra on the side. Fav pieces: the buttery King Salmon Toro and Ao Ebi topped with a creamy sauce and pine nuts. * Nigiri A La Carte: Santa Barbara Uni ($8), Otoro ($9x2), and Hamachi Toro ($5): https://bit.ly/3ePJOiQ My pieces were the Uni and Otoro. The Uni was perfectly sweet and briny. I was bummed about the Otoro. The torching altered the texture to a mushy tartare. S E R V I C E Polite and prompt. Overall, Fenikkusu is a nice neighborhood sushi restaurant. I had early dinner reservations on a weeknight and we were the only customers there. Personally, I won't be comfortable with indoor dining for a long time but if you're looking to slowly ease into indoor dining, Fenikkusu may be a good option. read more

A hidden gem for Japanese food. I was impressed by the experience from start to end- there's a variety of small plates that were all delicious - fun takes ranging from wagyu carpaccio, simply prepared vegetables, to baked scallops and then of course- the sushi. We opted for the omakase which was very fairly priced (our final bill came out to less than $100 per person with the small plates and drinks!). The freshness of the fish is definitely noticeable and prepared subtly to let the fish shine. Overall, everything was well-balanced and prepared with careful thought.
