Hospital & bought the land for Seattle Children's Hospital. Veterans & Children are their main charities. Originally a Fraternal organization, women are members and a large part of the board. This is one of the oldest Elks lodges in the U.S. based on #194. I was visiting from Seattle Elks #92 and was wELKomed like family. It was an easy check in, friendly staff. The bay view suits are a pretty good size and the bed was comfy! The little kitchenette was handy to have, and was stocked with the basics. Great views and so close to everything. There are many stores and restaurants close by that are easy to walk to. The only little complaint we had was that the shower water could've been hotter. They had a cot for each of our dogs to sleep in, treats, poop bags, and a coupon for the neighborhood pet shop. I think it says a lot about a place when they welcome dogs with such open arms. Outlook Inn is also situated near the downtown area and is walking distance from some nice shops and restaurants. This doesn't count towards this rating but Orcas island was beautiful. I highly recommend you visit and stay at Outlook Inn, especially if you have a dog.

However, no one got lost. Baker Creek Place is the best priced venue in Bellingham by far. For less than $1500, you can rent the entire building on a Saturday (the ball room plus the two meeting rooms) and get in at noon on Friday to set up. The rental includes tables and chairs for 200. If the venue isn't booked the Sunday after your wedding you can leave everything overnight and clean up the next morning. Angie, who oversees reservations, is a dream to work with. She responded to emails promptly and answered all our questions effectively. She arranged multiple tours of the venue for us, both before and after we had reserved it. It was helpful to be able to tour the venue more than once before booking and to get back inside closer to the wedding. The venue itself is a blank slate. There isn't much decoration in the ballroom so you can dress it up or down to suit your wedding vision. I was going for a more causal feel so most of my decorations were on the tables. Even with my minimal decoration the ballroom looked beautiful. We had 17 round tables set up plus a few for our vendors. There was ample room for our 140 guest to move around and a 12 x 12 dance floor. We got married in July so we chose to have the ceremony outside and I'm so glad we did. The trees behind the venue are a gorgeous backdrop for a wedding ceremony. They didn't look like much when I booked the venue in the winter, but on my wedding day the trees were stunning. If I could rate less than 1 Star, I would…read more.. As we began our wedding planning, finding a venue was a challenge. We struggled to find the perfect place, with a decent price, that had all the thing we were looking for, for our August wedding. My now husband found Selene Homestead and I fell in love with the few picture we saw. We scheduled a visit to check out their property and see what they had to offer--it was gorgeous! There was much land, a Saloon, Bridal Suite (that doubled as their bed and breakfast), the Magnolia Blossom Building for food/cake, a beautiful backyard, plus a large field where you can hold the ceremony. We quickly booked the venue and I was thrilled to get started on planning all the small details. As time went on and our date got closer, our bills got higher. And just as we were getting into the swing of things, my Nana--my mom's mom--passed away in March 2014. Everything was tossed in the air and not much time was spent on the wedding. We struggled for a long time, to get back on our feet (we still struggle daily), and really get things back on track. Debra, the woman who own/lives at the venue, with her husband, was less than sympathetic. It was all business. Then came the nickel-and-diming. The jars, the Shepard's hooks, the dance floor, the arbor.... We wanted two extra hours in the morning to work on set up (keep in mind we meant us working, and not wanting her or her husband to do anything more than just allow us to be there), and she hit us with a $200/hour price point! Pardon me? She booked us a bartender without clearing the individual with us, first (more on the bartender, later), and never kept in contact with us about anything. We scheduled a final visit before the wedding to make sure we covered all of our bases, speak with Debra about everything, and pay a remainder of fees. Debra couldn't even find the time to come outside and say "hello". We coordinated this time with her. She conveniently (for her) scheduled a conference call during our time there. Her husband is such a nice man and throughout the entire experience was so friendly. I have no negative things to say about him. I must also mention that they altered the venue with no warning or heads up to any of us. They laid a very large cement slab inform of the saloon for a dance floor. This struck a cord with me, as I booked the venue "as is" and was not expecting it to be altered. No where in the contract does it say they are entitled to unannounced changes to the venue, without notice. Then came the big day! It went very smoothly, during setup and there were no big hang-ups. Debra's small dog was running about the property during the wedding and I was most certainly NOT OKAY with that. I had my small dog, my mother's and a cousin's dog roaming around, as she approved of it, and was well aware they'd be there. By no means did that make it okay for her to have her dog running around, getting in my photos, the day of the wedding. Debra came outside to the wedding unannounced, took a lot of photos (without being given permission), and ate the food (again, no permission. And feeding her was not stated in the contract). She chatted with various people, and would go back inside. My point of view on this is... we are renting your space. You are not invited to the wedding. And you are not permitted to eat the food we paid for, chat with my guests, take photos of our day, and have your dog roam around my reception. A side note on the bartender--she has no clue as to what being a bartender entails. The majority of our guests complained about her, and she said several rude comments to multiple wedding guests. This is most definitely not okay. Breakfast, the morning after the wedding, was wonderful, and leaving the venue was just fine with me. The wedding was gorgeous, but the attitude and they way Debra runs her business, is NOT. I would not recommend Selene Homestead to anyone, unless they're ready for a large bill and an unfriendly attitude from her. Again, her husband was wonderful, pleasant to be around, and a comfort to talk to. But do yourself a favor and do NOT book Selene Homestead.

We needed a venue that has multiple sections as the wedding has both traditional ceremony and ethic ceremony. We had different groups working on different things at the same time. The only downside of this venue is their sound system does not match the quality and beauty of the venue. The audio of the sound system was more of a distraction and than an enhancement. On the day of the rehearsal, I had asked for the system to be checked to ensure it meets our needs. I was assured that everything was checked out well. On the day off, the mic went on/off during the whole wedding ceremony. It was so annoying and distracting. Finally, the system went out by itself, which was better. Even if there is no enhancement of the audio, at least no distraction. So, talked to the DJ about it and I was told they were informed that the wireless tends to have that issue. Instead of fixing it, they just let it be a distraction. It very disappointing experience. They assured me that we will be using a wired mic during the reception and it should be okay. NOT! The mic was so low that we could not hear the speaker. Unfortunately, there were so many wonderful messages that were shared and only a few tables close to the speakers could hear the message. I was this place up their sound system to match the elegantness of the venue. The sound system seems to downgrade their entire venue value.

We had room #111, which is the closest room on the second floor to the main (lobby) building. I thought road noise might be a problem, but it wasn't really noticeable. In fact, there were only two things I didn't like about the room. There are no microwaves in the rooms. But there is a small one in the hallway on each building's floor, shared by all. Not as convenient (we use it a lot for tea, coffee, etc.), but good enough. More annoying was the amount of light coming in from the windows. There are bright security lights on all night (that's good), but the curtains were not designed to cope with that light. Therefore, the room remains pretty bright all night. That I really didn't like. You can look at my photos for an idea of what the breakfast buffet included (e.g., 2 kinds of bread, 2 fruits, 4 dry cereals, coffee, etc.) Nothing remarkable, but I have definitely experienced worse. Overall, it was a comfortable, clean, and relatively quiet room, at an exceptionally good price. Service was always very friendly and helpful. And the location is centrally located, near the I-5 freeway, near downtown, and pretty close to Boulevard Park, Zuanich Point Park, and Whatcom Falls Park. If I return to Bellingham, this would definitely be my first choice of lodging.
