Passing by and thought I would try it out. I have done BBQ competition for three years and I am also a KCBS BBQ judge. Ordered a premium basket with brisket and fries. Also got a side order of baked beans. I expected, for $15 a larger sandwich but it was a standard sized hamburger bun with skimpy meat. The brisket was not tender and the fries were over seasoned. The beans were great and the sauce was as well. Maybe it was just an off day but I have never had an off day at Joes or Jack Shack. Stopped in today for lunch. It's a very nostalgic restaurant with old images and signs. This place has been around Lees Summit for a long time and I give them a try about once each year. I guess I keep hoping the food move beyond OK. Today I had the burnt ends dinner with two sides (beans and slaw). The beans are above average, slaw below average and the burnt ends average. So place was super neat and the outdoor area was decorated for fall and with Nov temps in the 70s, great to eat outside. We ordered a brisket and ham sandwich & a sausage and pork sandwich with fries & onion rings. The ham was delicious with great smoke flavor but the brisket was just ok & a little salty. (?) On the other sandwich very good sausage but again the pork was just ok. The onion rings looked great & the coating was decent not a lot of flavor but the onions were like shriveled up inside. It was like they were fried from the inside out. Fries had a seasoning I didn't care for but my wife liked. Overall, nice little neighborhood BBQ place but not someplace I would seek out. read more

Ribs! Ribs! Ribs! Seriously. Loved these ribs. My buddy with me is a Kansas City guy and loved the ribs too. Said he hadn't had ribs that good in a long time. I had some ribs at another restaurant the next week and they were no comparison. Environment is awesome. Very unique being in an old gas station. Stopped by the Filling Station on a whim today with some friends. This place is so cute, clean, affordable and delicious. I had the smoked catfish with baked beans and sweet potato fries. When an out of town friend stopped in for an overnight visit and wanted to experience some KC style BBQ, rather than drive into the city to go to the standard places like Gates, Jack Stack, or Arthur Bryants; I thought of Lee's Summit's own Filling Station. We are glad we went tonight. On Monday's and Thursday's The Filling Station has a rib special. A full side of ribs (about 12-14 ribs) for $16.95. This was enough to feed three adults. The ribs were meaty and big and tasty. Lot's of wonderful smoky flavor. In addition we ordered coleslaw. The Filling Station coleslaw has a vinegar based slaw dressing and it was quite tasty. A pint, fed three adults. We also ordered Onion Rings (I thought they were a bit salty) and Fried Pickles. The Fired Pickles were wonderful and the dipping sauce that came with them was also good. Just the right amount of dill in the fry batter on the pickles. The Filling Station serves Coke Products. A good meal that left a good impression on our out of town guest. read more

The BBQ is consistently good. The sandwiches are large and full of meat. We usually have the Carolina Pulled pork. The pork is tender, juicy, plentiful. The coleslaw is made in house and is not your standard cream based (although that's also available as a side). It's really good. The ribs are some of the best in the KC area. The restaurant and bathroom are always clean. On top of all of that the staff is pleasant and helpful. We highly recommend The filling station. Don't go on Monday's they're closed. read more

I went here a couple of years ago on Mother's Day and couldn't bring myself to come back. The BBQ was okay but as an experience I am shocked I made it to the end. We walked in and saw the staff sitting on the food counter next to a large CAN of baked beans. High price tag for canned baked beans and a staff that clearly didn't care about cleanliness or service. Considering this place is so close to Kansas City, you would think the food would be better. I don't think this place should even call itself BBQ. When I walked in, the place smelt kind of like trash and all of the tables were sticky. I ordered my food but the food they gave me came out wrong. I decided not to make a fuss and just eat it anyway. The side was cold and the meet was lukewarm, like it had been sitting on a counter for a while. The meat needed to be smothered in BBQ sauce to make up for how chewy and dry it was. Well, this is good BBQ, and considering it's out in Lee's Summit, it's like 5 stars for around there. Also the beans are very above average, and their hot sauce alone is worth the trip (but I had to mix it with the medium to save my mouth). I only had their Carolina pulled-pork sandwich (with cole slaw on top), and it was pretty good. I had to, though, use a lot of sauce because the meat, while tender, didn't have much flavor of it's own. The cole slaw, sort of a side note to a good pulled-porker when in good order, in this case just sort of sat there, adding a little texture but not much else. Maybe I just like my cole slaw a little on the vinegary side, but this was pretty much just colorful cabbage. Nevertheless, I ate the whole thing (with the aforementioned sauce mix) and was happy. Now on to the beans. The beans, really a mean in-and-of-themselves, were chuck-full-o-pork bits, and in my estimation, if struck by lightening might spontaneously come alive and start talking. They looked good, and they almost tasted as good as they looked. I like my beans hearty and spicey, and these didn't really have the tang I enjoy. Still, I ate them all, too, and I was happy. Anyhow, I might be harshly judging some really good BBQ, but it's high standards which give us a good measure of an experience. As far as the ambiance of the place goes, it was a nice little nook-place, clean, inside and outside seating, and good for kids, families, or friends. I'll be back. read more

As a kid growing up in LS, The Filling Station has always been a family favorite, we would take family members that would come visit also. The barbecue is mouth watering and divine. We moved in 2011 to Virginia and could never find a barbecue out there that could come close to the bar that the filling station set in our life. Now its 2016 came to visit LS and of course had to go get some barbecue! Still tastes marvelous even being owned by a new owner. They really have done a good job with the foods. The restaurant itself is quaint and customer service is friendly and prompt, but I was pretty unimpressed with the food. There was little to no flavor in the meat itself (I had turkey, my friend had pork), and our fries were a tad undercooked. The sandwiches have LARGE buns, and the ratio of bread to meat is easily 4:1. The regular BBQ sauce and cole slaw were good though. Very good, local, homemade BBQ. I had the burnt ends, which were excellent -- and lots of it! I arrived for an early dinner, just before 6pm. There were a couple of people in line in front of me and one or 2 tables with diners already eating their meals. My food was delivered to my table promptly. I did notice, however, that as the line got just a little bit longer, or when a family of 6 came in, that the kitchen had more trouble keeping up with the demand, and there seemed to be an issue with some of their orders not being right. Stopped in since I was downtown and the smell of BBQ was tempting. I ordered a rib tip sandwich. The lady behind the counter seemed annoyed that I changed my order once I saw the daily special. The reason I'm giving two stars is due to a long hair being found in my sandwich! I was in a rush and eating my to go order when I noticed. I called back later to notify them of this situation. The same lady that helped me earlier apologized and said she really didn't know what to do about this. She offered a new sandwich which was nice but I didn't want a new sandwich. This spot has risen in the ranks on my BBQ list in a short amount of time, in fact I've eaten here more in the last year than any of my other "favorite" spots. Let's take a moment and talk about their homemade sausage, something that doesn't typically speak to me but the product here us unbelievably good not to mention the fact that their ribs are so freakin perfect The come right off the bone when you eat them. Dudes are solid and taste just like granny used to make. One of my favorite things is their sauce, they have three different t kinds. We have found that when all three are mixed together they create the perfect sauce. If you haven't been here, fo yourself a favor and check them out. I order 1/2 slab of ribs and 1/2 a pound of burnt ends ( I know I always order that..don't judge me). The burnt ends are just as good as the top places....they were juicy...moist..and good thing for me...they come naked and you can dip in their 3x BBQ sauces...I personally loved the spicy...the original reminds me of some other BBQ sauces I've had...The sweet was very good too. The pros: -It's in Lee's Summit's charming downtown area, which I adore. -It has outdoor seating, which isn't that common for BBQ joints in the KC metro, and the gas station motif is nice. I've actually never bothered to eat indoors. -It has a variety of meat offerings and BBQ presentations, including the Carolina style w/ slaw for when you're not in the mood for KC-style, and they do dual meat combos that are hefty and filling. -The sauce doesn't taste like generic store brand sauce, and the hot has notes of pepper and smoke that tastes fantastic on all the meats. -The staff is super sweet, and always brings out a bowl of water for our dog when we eat outdoors with him. -Their beans are delicious, and I hate about 98% of baked beans, and about 99% of baked beans procured at KC BBQ joints. So that's something. The con: -No Sunday hours, which is frequently when I'm craving me some 'cue. within walking distance of the house. :( read more

Quite possibly the worst BBQ I've ever eaten. Our ribs were served cold. So cold in fact that the fat was congealed. The burnt ends did not look or taste like true burnt ends. It just looks like pieces of the flat that were cut into cubes rather than the point that was smoked after pulling the brisket off. Everything was very bland and the sauces were just okay. I hope they don't claim their cherry dessert as something special or a family recipe. {spoiler alert} It's cherry pie filling with yellow cake mix poured on top. read more

My mom recommended this adorable little gem in downtown Lee's Summit, which is a bit of a historical landmark...there's a placard out front with the story of the old gas station the restaurant used to be. I would classify this stop on the KC BBQ whistle-stop tour as somewhere in the classy hole-in-the-wall category. It's quite small, with about 8-12 tables, and you order at the counter. Their sandwiches are the main thing, but they also have fried pickles, and the french fries were amazing! The smoker is out front, barbecuing your meal to perfection, and there's also the option to eat outside if you can handle the August heat. P.S. The Filling Station is the best all-around BBQ restaurant in the Kansas City area. No matter what you order on the menu (and over time I've ordered most of the menu) you're bound to get some great BBQ. The success of much of the menu relies on the sauce, but that's okay because their sauce is amazing. Must haves on their menu include the ribs, chicken, and their own sausage. Most of the sides are fine to very good, but you cannot miss the beans. As best I can tell, the baked beans are placed at the bottom of the smoker and the drippings and bits from the ribs above drop down into the beans. They are heavenly. The service is friendly and very attentive. If you can manage it, I would leave room for their cobbler. read more

The Filling Station puts the "banal" into BBQ. I'm not exactly sure what I meant by that, or what acronym the resulting "BQ" becomes. Maybe "beef quest" or something similar. Nothing really stands out in this restaurant. Everything on the menu tastes bland and predictable. It's the Kevin James of food. I feel bad because the family who runs it seems quite nice, but I honestly can't think of a single defining characteristic or quality that would entice me to recommend it. There are a bunch of toy trains, cars, and old advertisements on the walls. OK - I am a BBQ FREAK and I am so glad I was born in KC!! We had lunch today at The Filling Station. The staff was extraordinarily friendly - very appreciative of our business - I have a lot of respect for that because it is hard to find these days - and the old gas station thing is way cool!! The issue we had was with the food. The BBQ sauce is very sweet and completely overshadows the flavor of the meats which is probably a good thing because we tasted all of the meats without sauce and they were all bland and lacked serious flavor. The onion rings were promoted as "Homemade" but were over fried and so crunchy they cut the crap out of your mouth - I like crispy O rings but these were a little off the "Crunchy chart" for sure. If you have truly great meats don't bury them in an overpowering sauce - our party agreed that we would not return unless the real BBQ places in KC go on strike - lol. But hey - to end on a positive note - we all liked the beans!! :) read more

This is our staple BBQ joint. It's located in Down Town Lee's Summit. There is dine-in space, but we traditionally do takeout. It's actually in an old converted gas station. Awesome ribs, fantastic pulled pork sandwiches, and they have "real" burnt-ends (they run out, as all places that claim to have burnt ends should). When they have them, I always get a smoked turkey leg (so good). Out of town guests ask for this place by name. My brother-in-law is addicted; has to have it when he's in town. Fast, affordable, but occasionally there are communication issues (couple stories with bad phone service due to being very busy once, and then changing hours on us where we had to get from another BBQ place). If I could rate them 4 3/4 stars I would, ONLY because of the couple issues we've had, but the food is 5 stars! read more

Totally love the decor it is an old gas station with pumps out front & gas and car signs inside for decorations. It is in downtown Lee's Summit and is really cute. The parking lot is super small. Might need to park on the street. Super friendly staff. I ordered the combo sandwich beef & turkey, 1 rib & beans. It came out super fast like 5 mins. The rib was ok, nice rub on it but not smoked very well. Just needed a little more time to get that good smoke flavor to it. The turkey was fabu it was thick cut like Thanksgiving dinner and the star of the meal. The beef was ok same as the rib, nice seasoning needed more smoke. The sandwiches are smaller than you get at most BBQ places, but that is ok the are the right size, most BBQ joint sandwiches are to big to eat the whole thing. The beans are a little running but have a nice smoke flavor and tons of meat in them. If I find myself in Lee's Summit again I will stop in for sure. read more

An excellent little neighborhood barbecue joint. My wife and I were in Lee's Summit for the day. She loves the place, so we decided to stop by. It was the two of us and our infant son, complete with large stroller, diaper bag, toys, and all that other stuff involved in taking a baby out for a brief visit anywhere. The interior is pretty small--it is an old filling station, after all--and with all the baby stuff we took up a large portion of it, so we put in our orders and went outside to the seating there. It was a very warm day in early April, in that time of year when it's too early to turn on the air conditioner, plus there's the heat from the kitchen, so the interior was a bit hot, anyway. The outside dining area is very pleasant, though, and we enjoyed just sitting and relaxing out there. The ambiance, both inside and out, was very comfortable, and the service was fast and friendly. I got the rib tips sandwich, and my wife got the pulled pork. (The baby didn't get anything, but he doesn't have teeth yet.) The pulled pork was excellent, with a very good smoke flavor to the meat. I hadn't had rib tips before, and I've discovered that, while they are good, they just aren't really my favorite. I have a hard time with pork ribs, too, so it's a personal thing, really. Don't let me discourage you from trying them if you like pork ribs. I really enjoyed the sauces, too--the regular has a very nice celery seed flavor, the spicy has a peppery flavor that sneaks up on you, and the sweet is, well, sweet. (I'm really being Mr. Obvious here, aren't I?) For sides, we got an order of fries and slaw. The slaw was vinegar-based rather than cream-based, which is my preferred type. The fries were well seasoned, and stood alone without ketchup or sauce just beautifully. Can't say about their other sides. Overall, I have a number of barbecue joints around my house so I probably wouldn't drive the half-hour to Lee's Summit just for the Filling Station, but when I am in the area I won't hesitate to go back. First visit. The Pork n Pit was closed. Ordered the sampler platter for two. We had ribs, chicken, sausage, ham, burnt ends, baked beans, and potato salad. I'm not a rib fan. They are too much work, but my husband likes them. I sawed on one for about five minutes with the worst plastic utensils of all time, I gave up and handed my one rib back to my husband. He gave me a bite later. I was right, not awesome enough for the struggle. Ham was way too peppered, so coupled with how ham is made, it was just a lot of salt and pepper. Burnt ends had no flavor unless you sauced them up. Sausage was okay. I liked the baked beans but real BBQ officinados would say they were bland. Potato salad was not memorable. To top it off, too much ice in my cup of water (filled to the brim) so didn't make it through my meal without needing a refill which is up to you to ask for since it's a self serve gas station. Sweet sauce is really sweet. I don't need to return and my husband who just loves meat said, "too much salt and too much pepper." read more
