As many Kansas Citians do, my wife and I were stuck in a beautiful rut of our 5 different favorite BBQ spots. Each of those restaurants are excellent, each one brings their own something special to the table and to the palate. In a chance meeting last week BBQ became a topic of conversation and Big Q Barbeque in KCK was mentioned. We had never even heard of it, let alone tried it. This past weekend that all changed. We now have a 6th BBQ hidden gem to toss into our rotation. Everything we tried was delicious, I highly suggest giving it a try. This is a neighborhood joint smack in the middle of Wyandotte County. They provide generous portions, so don't feel bad if you ask for a container to-go. It's almost encouraged. I thought my ribs were overdone. They were a little dry and chewy. The sauce was a-ok. Fries were fine. The beans were mighty tasty. I would return if I was in the area, but I'm not sure this is a destination location. The staff was polite and happy to answer any questions. read more

To me it's kind of pricey for what you get. The taste is good. Doesn't seem to be many people there.

This place is very out of the way in south Wyandotte county, making it a destination restaurant for most metro residents, but unfortunately it doesn't live up to being destination worthy. The "Burnt Ends" were nothing more than chopped up roast and brisket that is stewed in bbq sauce. The sauce was neither sweet nor spicy. The fries are large steak fries and the baked beans were good enough that I would re-order them, but they still do not stand out as a signature side dish. The building is very generic and outdated with zero personality, inside and out. My waitress was friendly and efficient but that's about the best I can say about the experience. This place represents the quantity of BBQ joints in this town, not the quality. read more

My "small BBQ platter" with brisket, two ribs, two sides, bread, and a pickle was reasonably priced at $11.99. The portion sizes were generous, and the ribs had plenty of tasty, fall off the bone meat. I liked the crunchy, creamy, chilled cole slaw and the brown sugar (?) flavored baked beans. The brisket was flavorful, and plentiful, but could have been leaner. The dining area was clean and well lighted with TVs, and the service was friendly, attentive, and fast (my meal was ready in about six minutes), but the TVs were off, and there was no background music. The roadside sign out front decided my order for me. The Rib Tips are on special every day. What an awesome pile of food I got. The nuclear red barbeque sauce was AWESOME! It had flavor, it had heat, it dared to defy the purgatory of sweetness that has defined KC BBQ. I ate all of mine and finished what my significant other couldn't. The sauce was hot enough that I paid for it the next day, but that's how I roll! It is a mom and pop operation for sure. The owner was born and raised right here in Kansas City. This place is absolutely an amazing hidden gem! Took some customers to a place nearby and had about an hours wait time and found this place by accident and by the smell of bbq in the air. Upon entering I noticed how spotless it was. I was greeted by the sweetest waitress who sat me and got my order. The onion rings are literally the best I've ever had. They were breaded with panko and the portion was huge. The fried pickles were amazing. They had a dill breading on them and the ranch was stellar. The total for both my appetizers was $5! (Yes for real). I ended up ordering 2 more sets of the apps for my clients who also were super impressed. Husband and I went there the next evening for dinner and those ribs.... omg ! Glad I live a distance or I'd be there daily. Broke and obese. I do not write reviews for fluff as I'm in the biz and I'm telling you from my personal experience you will not be dissatisfied and it's worth the drive from any part of this city! As I was leaving the chef came and visited as did the owner which imo is a service that is so often forgotten. Well these folks are grateful for you and they show it. Decided to try this place, not a whole lot of options in this area. IPretty nondescript exterior and not much by way of interior decor either. But the waitress was very friendly. I had a combo sandwich (double brisket), potato salad, mozzarella sticks and pickles. My son got a pulled pork sandwich and French fries. Lets start with the pros of this little place the pulled pork sandwich was huge & had a sweet BBQ sauce it was delicious, mozzarella sticks & marinara sauce were great, French fries great, dill pickles amazing! Customer service A++. The cons unfortunately the brisket sandwich was just ok, average size, the meat was kind of dry, and wasn't as smoky as I had hoped and the bbq sauce on the sandwich was very skimpy and spicier than the sauce on the pulled pork. I wish I would have gotten the sweet bbq on it instead or a mix of the 2 sauces would've probably been good. The potato salad was absolutely the worst I have ever had, next time I'll try the fries instead. Also I had to pay extra for a pickle with my sandwich, but I will mention it was a whole dill pickle sliced up when ordered and was one of the best I've ever had. Like most great BBQ places, this is tucked inside a nondescript building on a corner in the residential area of Argentine in KCK. At first glance, you would definitely not realize what a gem this place is. The menu is direct and delicious. I've never had anything there I didn't like, and I've eaten there a lot. You get huge portions and the best part is the price. It's a much better deal than commercial BBQ restaurants and much, much tastier. The BBQ sauce is home made with the perfect blend of sweet and spicy and that extra Kansas City tang. Definitely worth making the trip off the beaten path for an amazing meal. read more

There are two Yelp listings for this place...the other is listed as just "Big Q" but with the same address. I, unfortunately, relied on the reviews from this listing which are WRONG. This is not a 4 star place by any stretch and the other review confirms my impressions. Surely Emily, Reed and Lisa must be related to the owners. I really hate it when Yelp leads me astray. Here is my review... Don't bother. I have been trying to find some new out of the way BBQ places so I gave Big Q a try and it was a complete waste of time/money. Brisket is sliced paper thin and has no smoke making it roast beef. Burnt ends are not burnt ends at all, just a mix of some "brisket" chunks and chopped beef. Ribs were decent but the fat was not fully rendered out. Service was awful...the server was totally flustered and unfriendly with just 3 tables being utilized. I will not return. My BBQ review pedigree is pretty good and most are published under RastaManInKansas on tripadvisor. At a minimum read the reviews from the other listing before you decide to go here. read more

We hired the Big Q to cater my daughter's wedding and they did a fantastic job! The food was a big hit with the guest especially the cheesy potatoes. Gary helped us plan the amount of food and provided sample dishes for the engaged couple to try. The amount of food was spot on- there was very little left at the end of the night but still enough for some BBQ sandwiches later that week. The cheesy potatoes were the biggest hit of the night, our guests blew through 6 trays of them and were asking for more. Gary and his crew arrived ahead of time, was prepared and had things set up on time. At the end of the night they packed up leftovers for us and left the kitchen spotless. At the top of the hill on 34th street, this place is a nice surprise. I went with a client today, and being miserably cool and misting outside it was not busy. So we split a sampler. It had ribs, beef, sausage, and turkey. The sausage and turkey were nothing special and lacking smoke, both both were lean and moist... which is a trick. The beef was thin sliced with a mild smoke flavor, and very moist. I was liking it more and more as I ate through a few bites. The ribs were full spare ribs... and that is what I like. They were pleasantly smoky and very lightly seasoned, letting the pork do the talking to your taste buds. I like spicy ribs, too... but these were fine and had enough smoke to carry them through. These bones were also rendered and tender. Almost too tender, but not so in my book. The ribs are a solide effort here. Waffle cut fries with spice are always a treat. BBQ Beans were okay. I can't rave about them, but I rarely rave about BBQ beans. Diet Dr Pepper on tap. Nice touch. The sauce comes on everything. You may want to have them leave it off. If you opt to use sauce at all have them warm it slightly in the microwave. The flavors will be better. Theirs is a very simple, tangy, tomato sauce with mild spice heat. One of my husbands favorites from back in the day, so we stopped by on a Saturday at lunch time...not busy at all, only one other family in the whole place. Took a seat at a table (the sign said "Seat Yourself"), the teenager that was supposed to be waiting tables never acknowledged our presence, so after about 10 minutes of just sitting there we left....not sure they even noticed. I have eaten there 3 times and did 2 take outs. The foods are just ok but since it's the only restaurant close to where I live I bother to leave a comment hopefully the owner will care to at least read it. Each time I went there the place was never busy, the owner was always there. He is pretty friendly but get this. He will only say hi and talk to people he knows. At one of my visits, there were like 5 tables of customers including mine and he wandered around and talked to all if them and skipped my table making me feel like I wasn't welcomed at his place or some sort.
