Herman the owner of La Casa Blanca was again very nice as he took us to our table and got our Super Large Margarita Drink for us. The Margarita is 48 oz. and is so good, and so hard to finish, because it is so BIG ! We enjoyed our Drink with some delicious crispy Tortilla Chips with some delicious home made salsa. Then we saw Cesar ! Cesar our favorite server years ago has now come back to work at La Casa Blanca again. Cesar is again so Funny and Bubbly, as he hustles around the restaurant handling many tables with the same professional attitude he has always had. You want to go or come back to this restaurant over and over again just because of the great time you will have with Cesar serving your table. He is so Funny ! For my dinner I had the Chili Relleno & Cheese Enchilada Plate. The Chili Relleno's at this restaurant are HUGE, and the most delicious I have ever had at any Mexican Restaurant. The Cheese Enchilada and the rice and beans are also very good. My wife had the Fish Taco Plate which had 2 very large Fish Tacos with Rice and Beans. I have been many times for the weekend brunch. It is terrific. My favorites are the plentiful fresh fruit, eggs made to order, and desserts. The fajitas are also very tasty. The place just expanded but is still crowded on weekends. Parking is easy in the adjacent lot. The alcoholic drinks are great also - like the strawberry margarita. read more

The food is without a doubt the best I've had in this area. I had a chili rellano and don't think I've ever had one this good. Chips with outstanding red and green salsa. After saying it's the best place to go for Mexican food the service was not lacking. Our waiter was very personable but service was slow. We got our drinks right away but we waited about 20 minutes before the waiter came to take our order. I did notice that some customers who came in after us placed their orders and were served before we were. We then waited for some time before we received our check. This place has the best attitude through this crisis, they set up a beautiful outdoor seating tent and not one complaint about what they've been through to try to survive. Their food is just as good as it's always been so please go and show them the support this local business absolutely deserves. I had the usual large shrimp cocktail which had a generous amount of shrimp a side of beans with cheese and guacamole, my husband had the fish tacos plate that he loved, and we brought our son a carne asada burrito which he went on about how the meat wasn't dry, it was loaded with stuff and the salsa was just perfect! The food here is fantastic but I gave it a 2 star because of their coverup of " what's in your Margarita?" I have no issues with wine Margaritas, as long as it is posted on their menu and when directly asked, the waiter stated "we use Tequila " When I asked for a specific brand of Tequila, he admitted they use " Tequila Wine" Huh? Ok I might have given 3.5 stars but I think for the price of Sunday brunch and what was offered there is no way I can. So my family and I went to try this place because I wanted to try something different and they are newly revamped so I figure what the heck let's do it. Like I said it's Sunday mid morning and there weren't too many ppl in fact there were 2 other 4 tops, ok the service not bad so that's a plus, the food was not terrible but maybe it's my culinary background talking but if you are going to offer up a brunch buffet it has to kept fresh and this was not the case here, I mean they weren't busy so no need for food to stay out until it's dry and unappealing, ugh I can't go back oh and dessert choices, mini churros, buñuelos and fruit, nada mas lol idk maybe I'll give them another try by myself and see if it was an off day then I rewrite my review. Saw a Yelp coupon and decided to give this place a try. Liked that there was plenty of private, off street parking. When we walked in we were promptly greeted by a nice man and seated in a booth. Carnitas were flavorful but a bit over cooked and slightly dry, however, when I wrapped them in the hot, delicious flour tortilla with guacamole, beans and salsa they were so yummy!!! Beans were good, rice was good, loved the guacamole; it was creamy and not chunky. Review of the fajitas: They were served with rice an beans, tortillas, sour cream, and guacamole . The veggies used in the fajitas were very fresh. Both the chicken and the steak were seasoned well and very tender and juicy. I really appreciated that they weren't blaring the Mexican music here. It was playing at a nice level and not ear piercing. I've heard there's a lady that makes fresh, hot tortillas on the weekends!! We got take out tonight. Carnitas plate and Puerco y Papas and albondingas soup. The soup is the worst I've had, giant container, 3 meatballs. The meatballs are ok, the soup is flavorless. The carnitas is good, but it was ordered as all rice, no beans. The puerco is usually one of my favorite dishes. Not tonight. They threw boiled potatoes into the pork at the last minute so none of the flavor had penetrated the potatoes. The pork was much fattier than usual. We used to go there once a week until they added a smart ass waiter who seemed to go out of his way to be offensive. He was the only person handing out food. Too bad this restaurant has declined as far as it has. I doubt they will get much of any business from us in the future. read more

My "go-to" Sunday brunch place is usually Old Town Tequila Factory. Unfortunately their brunch is expensive. Today I was looking for a place a little easier on the wallet but equally as delicious (if not more). I remembered the good old Cas Blanca Restaurant near the 8 fwy in La Mesa. A friend introduced me to this place and I've been a fan since. It's been at least a year since I had been here, and I left unimpressed my last visit given they seemed to have reduced their food selection and the service was lacking. I'm glad to report that Casa Blanca is back to bringing their A game. The food was delicious and fresh with a reasonable selection of authentic Mexican classics, sweets, fresh fruit, freshly made tortillas (made in front of you), and more. Of course, the selection is nowhere near the selection at Old Town Tequila Factory, but neither is the price. Still, I didn't feel the menu was lacking anything I really wanted. If I had to critique something, I would prefer that the buffet include coffee and/or orange juice. Still, this latest experience was a great one. I'll be back. read more

My wife and I came here on an Amazon discount, and we are so glad we didn't pay full price. We had a 30 minute wait, and there were three tables (with tablecloths) outside in front of the restaurant and only one chair. People were sitting on the tables waiting. The service was average (except for the margarita incident below), and the food was on a par with just about any other Mexican restaurant in San Diego County (i.e. Robertos, El Indio, Casa De Pico, etc). That is to say, nothing special at all. Except the handmade tortillas, which were pretty good. A small margarita was ordered, and believe it or not, the server came back twice to verify this simple order: One small regular-flavor margarita. He finally brought the margarita, and it was not worth the wait. It was simply lousy, having a chemical or medicinal aftertaste. They probably used a cheap mix and cheaper tequila. It was left unfinished. This place is the noisiest restaurant I've ever dined in, not counting sports bars during a game. The decor was medium to horrendous tacky, with several images of that "Stay thirsty, my friend" guy, and a even a cardboard cutout of him topped with a real sombrero. There were sombreros and sarapes placed randomly and Christmas-style lights festooned all over the place. The accent lighting on the nearest wall strobed and flickered constantly when it wasn't completely inoperative. The accent lights accentuated an electrical problem, ironically. Folks, if you are considering having a nice dinner and some conversation with a companion, do not consider this place. If all you require is a good handmade tortilla, very average food, and don't mind shouting to your dinner companion, go for it! Oh, and you only get one each of those great tortillas. Abuela keeps count, apparently. We exited the restaurant and were immediately engulfed by the raucous din of nearby Freeway 8 traffic, cars, motorcycles and trucks laboring up to the Grossmont Summit. Get this: Outside was literally far quieter than inside the restaurant. We had to laugh as we walked back to the car. It was quite a surreal experience. It won't be repeated. First visit today after living a mile away for four years. I don't know what was keeping me. We had the buffet and it was delicious. I had a taste of most items and went back for more to make sure I tried everything. From breakfast meats to machaca and chilis, fajitas and enchiladas. Fruit, all the trimmings and toppings and then desserts. Atmosphere is great, loved the music, people were so engaging and the staff is top notch. I highly recommend the experience. A friend recommended this place and could not stop talking about how good the food was and her being a mexican food lover like myself I couldn't help but check it out. Now on to the food, they have a great spread for their brunch buffet, machaca, chilaquiles, enchiladas, rice, refried beans, potatoes, bacon, sausage, soups, salad, fresh fruit and desserts there are a few other food items that I'm forgetting but everything we've tried has been very good and there is a little set up where they make fresh tortillas and bring them to your table.... can't go wrong there! For my first time going here my husband and I went on a Sunday for their brunch and we happened to go right when it opened so no one was in the restaurant just yet, we were greeted at the door by the waiters which one of them asked if we had reservations both of us looked at each other a little puzzled and said no we didn't know we were supposed to then his reply that's ok we will get you in this time, they were just joking with us but caught us off guard anyway they are a couple of characters and totally make it more enjoyable. I'll start by saying if you didn't know this place was there you'd most likely drive by it. But, I received a Birthday Dinner coupon and thought I'd give them a try. I loved it from the moment I walked up to it after parking and there clearly marked on a board at the entrance were their daily specials. Huumm? "Let's see what's on the menu" I said to my wife and with the traditional ambiance of decor and music playing - there were not too many open seats to choose from. We found a table we liked right next to where the drinks were made and it didn't take me long to decide on a Pomegranate (large) Margarita. From the menu, I ordered something I'd never had in all my travels down south, the STEAK PICADO & it was unbelievable good with the soft fresh made tortillas! It's Steak that is cooked with chorizo!! I'll have to do more research on this dish but there was so much food that neither my wife nor myself could finish our complete meals. She had the Chili Verde Burrito plate and it was the size of the plate! Barely room for the beans and rice that came with it. Our waitress, Lorena was very polite and on her game as we saw her handle a lot of tables thoroughly and all with a pleasant smile. Although this "place" has been there for a long time, we found out it's now got new owners (about 3 years now?) and we had a chance to meet one of them and he shared his story along with an invite to another restaurant he owns as well, Troy's off of Mission Gorge Road. Their enchilada sauce is great - kind of old world classic sauce. Very yummy. This place is cute and comfortable. The waiters are super nice and accommodating. Even when they are busy, the service has been good. I didn't love their chile rellenos - but it was just a personal style preference. The rice and beans...yummy too. I really don't know how we have just now discovered this little gem of a restaurant. Diablo shrimp will SET YOU ON FIRE - but so yummy. Great food and friendly, efficient service. We have eaten here since they opened and it has been consistently great. The food is excellent, the bean soup is delicious and very filling. On weekends there is a person hand making tortillas (they are SO good!). We have ordered take out for the last 6+ weeks and they take great care to package food properly. Masks, gloves, everything in bags and they bring it to your car. We paid in advance and opened the back door of the car so they could put it inside. This was my father's favorite place to eat before he passed. Dad had Parkinson's and they were always very patient and took time to understand his speech as his condition worsened. They always took time to greet us (most often it was Cesar), pay attention to him, and make the visit fun. read more

Food was okay. My friend ordered Pollo Ranchero (12.95) "A plump, grilled chicken breast smothered in ranchero sauce," but in fact the chicken breast was very, very skinny. Service was good until I tried to use a Groupon I had bought that actually included two separate Groupons, each covering $16 worth of food, so I invited a friend, but the establishment only let me use one Groupon even though I had only bought one. I was confused as I had only bought one Groupon (apparently it came with two and were considered two separate Groupons) and when I was explaining my thoughts and asking for clarification, our server turned very rude and antagonistic. But, earlier she did turn up the air conditioning for me as I was sweating my way through my meal. I enjoyed the Camarones a la Diabla - the shrimp were meaty and tasty. My friend did not enjoy her little piece of chicken. The margarita was good but I was so hot and then frustrated that our server had shut down on us, and I still didn't understand the Groupon situation that I didn't finish my drink. I'll go back again to use the other part of the ONE Groupon I bought but now I know that'll really only cover one meal so bring a friend that is open to going Dutch. Lol. read more

We came here and I want to order off the menu but they were having a brunch so my husband wanted to try the brunch. I 1st the everything was empty so we waited for them to bring out more food. Rice was good the beans were OK even though they were canned beans. Chile Colorado only had a tomato sauce on it. The enchiladas were greesy and had no flavor. The fajitas were made with cheap meat and the vegetables were good but they were greezy. Chips were cold.. We felt sorry for the staff that work there. Supposedly they have a chef that creates their dishes. Maybe it's time to get a new chef. If you make Mexican food you need to make it have good flavor and spice. There aren't many interesting, yet still authentic, Mexican restaurants of this quality in the San Diego area. This place has room for improvement, but they care about making the customer happy, and they do some things REALLY well. Like the corn tortillas, for instance! The tortillas are made fresh, not only every day, but often, as you eat, while you watch! Twice the thickness of the corn tortillas I'm used to and so delicious! The Yelp raves about it are spot on! Cheese Enchilada - My husband says, "no so good - not much flavor." Guacamole - Really good - creamy and fresh avocados - just the way we like it! Beans - Very good (that means they're probably made with lard, but they're delicious!) Spanish Rice - Better than average - with tomatoes and other goodies in it. Margaritas - They only serve beer and wine, and I missed the Tequila - just okay. Flan - Delicious! With a wonderful, chocolate sauce - dense, yet creamy - the way I like it! Carne Asada ($12.95) - Not good. I ordered it medium rare. It was a very thin piece of steak, and was so tough, I couldn't even cut it with a steak knife, let alone eat it. I talked to the waiter about it, and he suggested I have them cook it more so it would be more tender. He said, "We want you to be happy," which I appreciated. I got it cooked more, and it was a little "softer," as he put it, but it now had no flavor, and was dry. Okay, so I won't order that again. But I would definitely come back! Not sure if they are under new ownership but the service was near non existent and the food mediocre at best. Been meaning to try this place after getting all their coupons in the mail. Of course their advertised lobster had me curious. Its actually alot bigger inside than the outside would suggest. the menu surprised me with how extensive it was, lots of seafood options. The diablo sauce on my seafood was perfect! spicy and tasty, not too hot but just enough. HOwever, i can see some folks might think it was a bit too spicy (not for me though). The pulpo was a little tough but tasty and the tilapia was very tender and absorbed the sauce very well. I havent been too impressed with Mexican restaurants in the area but this one wasnt too gringo or touristy, just very tasty with a homemade vibe.
