For nearly the 5 years I have lived in Austin I have been going to Finley's. I have been to 3 different locations because I would follow my Barber (Cody) around wherever he went. There was a period of time where Cody's adventures took him away from Austin so I had to utilize other barbers (still at Finley's) and each one that I used were all great. Lucky for me, Cody returned home to Austin the 3rd Street location and it's now the only place I will go to get my cut. Great shop, great people! I used to go to Cody, but he had recently moved. I've tried other popular shops in the city, but I always find myself coming back to Finley's. I think I find found my togo barber, Tommy. He is passionate in what he does and its obvious that he's been in the business forever. He has incredible attention to detail and understood how to cut Asian hair (a lot of barbers will cut too short and due to commonly straight,thick,courser hair, I get cowlicks easily). Even though I was his last client of the day, he took the time to make sure everything was perfect and asked if I liked what he did throughout the whole session. Great work! Tip: DO NOT PARK IN THE GARAGES ON THE WEEKENDS, THEY WILL NOT VALIDATE IT. I ended up having to pay $12 for parking for a 30minute cut. read more

Eh. I must have received the complimentary "oh your from out of town" sh!t service. My 10 am appointment with Marie Z called for a 30 min cut including shampoo, hot lather neck trim and massage. Sat down at 10:03 and was done at 10:15 with no shampoo or massage. Pretty standard cut, nothing to justify the $35 price tag. A couple stars for a comfortable waiting area with some complimentary drinks. Though I woulda rather saved $20 and went to Supercuts. I'd still have the same haircut. read more

I received one of the best haircuts I have ever received, and the scalp massage and shampoo were the best. I did make an appointment for a manicure and was very disappointed it was merely a nail trim and hand massage. I can do that at home and it isn't $30.00 dollars. Man...I really WANT to give this place a good review. After all, they've got that old school charm with a slick modern shine...and they put a hot towel on your face when they wash your hair...they've got the bells & whistles. The only thing lacking from my experience of this barber shop is a good haircut. I went in to see Tommy. Tommy's been in the game for a long time. Maybe I caught Tommy at the end of a long day, because right after telling him what I wanted, he set about giving me the exact opposite. The parts I've been growing out for a while we're the first to go. The parts I really wanted cut back were left long, because he "liked what I came in with." Had I wanted to maintain that cut and add a bit of hipster flair, we would have been golden, but I wanted something specifically different. Then after I stopped him from cutting any more from the areas I wanted long in the first place, he proceeded to tell me about his vision for my hair, which had nothing in common with the cut I'd asked for. At least he filled my hair with gluey product. Product I never use, nor ever want to use. I called Finley's the next morning to give them a chance to make things right before I reviewed them here on Yelp. They offered me a complimentary cut, so I came in optimistic & open, with a new vision, based on what now had to work with. Nothing crazy, just a pretty simple short men's cut. When the new girl (who's name I can't recall) found out that I was there to fix a bad cut, she said, "Yeah, people tell me all the time that they don't like their hair & get frustrated with hairdressers. Guess what...we hate you too." "I'm sorry, I think I mis-heard you. What did you say?" "I said you don't have to like us. Hairdressers hate you too." Wow. The second cut was no better than the first, nor any closer to anything I wanted. On the bright side, they have free beer, wine & arcade games. I must have gone on an off day. Their computer systems were taking forever, they took a while (after my reservation time) to start me, and my haircut was pretty terrible. I'm normally very particular with my hair (and sadly my normal barbershop was booked up so far in advance, I needed a haircut. I chose Finley's based on their reviews and a recommendation of a friend who'd had good luck there. I have a feeling my barber might be pretty new to the game. He managed to cut his own hand, dropped the clippers, and seriously messed up the sides with little to no fade. I'm frankly kind of shocked how bad it was considering how great the ambiance and style of the place is. This has been a serious object lesson not to stray from my normal joint. I'm now going to have to find someone to fix this in the meantime. read more

A decent haircut, but these guys would rather save money and time than guaranteeing a full customer satisfaction experience. I showed up a few minutes late for an appointment, had to wait 35 minutes, got a 15 minute trim (clippers only) - didn't receive the hair wash, massage or hot towel - and was still charged full price. They wouldn't negotiate or allow me to come back or wait for the shampoo and other services. If I'm paying a lot for a premium service, I should receive the full customer experience - this is how you build customer loyalty. I will not return to this barber shop read more

I've been buzzing my own hair for about 15 years, and finally decided to grow it out a bit to see what it looked like again. After it was approaching jew-fro status I decided to get a real haircut to see what it'd look like trimmed up a bit. I came in to Finley's based on the rave reviews of the shop here on Yelp and saw a lot of praise for Jessy and booked an appointment online. Gone are the days of my youth spending(wasting) 2+ hours on a Saturday morning waiting around in plastic chairs watching cartoons at the barber shop off the town square while 8 people in front of me got their haircuts. The booking is easy as can be, and you select your service, stylist, time and day online, book and you're set. I walked in on my lunch break from the office and was seated in the lounge area and offered a beer or drink and about 30 seconds later was taken to get my haircut. I explained basically that I was open for him to do whatever he thought would be best for my hair length and type, and he went to work and did a great job. This is probably nothing of note for most people, but seeing as how I hadn't had a cut in so long, I'd never had a shampooing after a cut, so it's nice that you can not worry about having to immediately shower to keep from itching like the dickens. All in all, I was back to my office in about 30 minutes from door to door, and very happy with the results and would definitely recommend Jessy and Finley's Barber Shop. read more

I do not understand all the positive reviews. Maybe it is the free beer. I went in for a cut and asked her to leave it long on top and just clean up the sides. When it was done, it was super short. I suspect if you want the standard fade, short on top, this place is probably fine. But if that is the case, go to supercuts and save some dough. If you leave longer on top and style it, stay away. Been there 3 times and always started 10-15 min later than the scheduled time BUT ended at the scheduled time. That's tolerable if the result were on par. I often showed the barber a pic of what haircut I'd like but the reality is, as always, just so cruel - nothing like what I hoped it to be. I initially tried out Finley's due to them opening this location near my office. I was pleasantly surprised after receiving my haircut. I received numerous compliments from my friends and co-workers. I was hooked. I appreciate the online reservation system, as I can schedule an appointment when it is most convenient for me. They go out of their way to make sure you have a good experience. If you have any problem, you should talk to them directly about it, as they will make good on any wrongs. Each time I get a haircut, I still am receiving compliments and I have since moved on to getting my beard trimmed as well, a service they offer. This isn't a typical haircut place where you walk in, wait a little bit (a few minutes to an hour) and be seen by someone. You'll want to make an appointment. The good news is they have a great online appointment system in place so you can do it through their website. The better news is they actually stick to their appointments and I am always in the chair right at my appointment time. If you do get there early or for some reason they're running behind there's a nice lounge with TVs and a cooler with beer / water / soda you can help yourself to. It beats sitting in a waiting room with kids running around and screaming. I'm sure all their barbers are great, but Cody has been by far the best barber to ever work with my hair. According to him I have one of the worst cow licks he has ever seen, and after a few visits he figured out a way to work with it and now it's like it doesn't even exist! Seriously, see Cody, especially if you've ever felt your hair is hard to work with. If you're driving park in the AMLI garage or city hall, but bring your ticket with you and they'll validate so you can park for free. read more

Finley's is the place for guys like me that want the quality and precision of a salon experience without having to go into a salon (the fumes make me nauseous). Finley's is a throwback to the days when a straight razor shave was the norm. It doesn't matter who you schedule your appointment with -- you're going to get a good haircut/shave/whatever you sign up for. I love the online booking process and the fact that they actually keep their calendar up to date. I booked online, got a reminder text and was all set. They give you wine, beer, and/or water when you arrive. The barbers are friendly, relaxed and make your comfort a priority. I recommend Finley's if you're in the area regularly. I've been wanting to make this place my place for a while, but it didn't make sense working up north. When I started working downtown, Finley's became my go-to. Keep it up, guys! read more

AVERY RANCH LOCATION-- Took my boyfriend here for a Father's Day treatment. "That place was totally legit" we're his exact words. He got the 'Clean Shave' package and he loved every minute of it. From the moment we walked in we were warmly welcomed, checked in and escorted to the waiting area in the back. They offered us an assortment of beverages including beer, wine, soda and water. We didn't have to wait long before he was escorted to the barbers chair. Then for 45 luxurious minutes he was pampered with the shave package with plenty of hot towels. Had an outstanding experience here! Walked in around 5:30 and asked if they take walk-ins. "Of course" they said, and booked me for 6:30, giving me enough time to check out downtown Austin beforehand. Sarah took care of me on this particular evening and the owner, Scott, came over and chatted me up for a bit. He encouraged me to get a nose hair wax, which was awesome! Good place, but felt more like a gentleman's lounge than a barbershop. Not to be confused with strip club. They just cater more to the experience than the product. They take reservations, which is nice. And there's a REALLY comfy lounge area to hang out in while you wait, with free bottled water, soda, or even beer. And good beer at that. Service is great. The folks are really nice. But my haircut was "fine", not great. Matt seemed confused by some of the (simple) things I asked about, so eventually I said "looks great" and left. $30 for an average haircut is a bit much. I came here instead of Avenue Barbershop because that place is always packed. And while I don't regret my decision (at all!), I'll stick to avenue. $10 cheaper and best cuts in town. Usually I get a great cut, but today I got a $5 supercut which cost $70 after tip. I had to come back because she missed a ton of spots on the shaved sides of my head. There were patches of hair that were 1/2 long. I went back and she fixed it. I then got home and noticed the back was completely crooked. I decided just to fix it myself at that point. I don't know if she was just having a bad eyesight day or what, but Amy Evers did a terrible job. I will definitely go back, but not with her. read more

I live nearby and I was looking for a haircut and decided to give Finley's a try. I'm glad I did. And I understand why people come from far away. It's an 'old time' barber shop with a game room for a waiting room, plenty of free drinks and a big TV, a place to relax before your hair cut. I lucked into an appointment with Michelle. It was random the first time I saw her for a haircut, but I don't make an appointment with anyone else, or anywhere else. Not only does she do a great job cutting my hair, but she listened to me to understand exactly what I was looking for and she remembers how to cut my hair every time. It's great not to have to re-explain and hope someone understands, I know I'll get the hair cut I want every single time. Michelle is a great person, genuinely nice, and a pleasure to sit in the chair with for 30 minutes. I cannot recommend Finley's and Michelle highly enough. 5 *plus* stars. read more

I've had the pleasure of having Michelle cut my hair going on almost 4 years now. I was lucky the first time I walked in, and she immediately knew exactly the cut I needed without my saying much at all. Since then, I have gotten a perfect hair cut every time, except once when for some reason I tried to tell her what to do. I don't do that anymore. I'll start by saying the only reason I'm giving a three-star review is because of the parking situation at Finley's. I've been going to its multiple locations around town for years now, and I think it's a great concept all-around -- and with reasonable prices to boot. Only on rare occasions have I ended up with a cut I wasn't happy with. Sadly, their 2nd St District location has resulted in them being burdened by having what may be the single-worst property management company in town: AMLI. In addition to managing the two apartment buildings within the District, they also manage its retail spaces. It would be an understatement to note that retail management isn't their core competency. Actually, I shouldn't even be using the terms "AMLI" and "competency" in the same sentence, considering AMLI has none whatsoever. They've known for over a decade now that parking -- or, rather, a perceived lack of it -- is the single biggest deterrent to prospective visitors, and until recently they've handled it in a mostly logical fashion: they let every business in the District offer free two-hour validated parking on weekdays (during the day), and free parking in the City Hall garage on weekends (which makes sense considering it's effectively empty then). So: imagine my surprise when I showed up on a recent late afternoon, only to be told I had "just missed" the 5pm cutoff for validated parking. Just to be clear, I didn't even *know* the cutoff -- formerly at 6pm -- had been moved up an hour. Further, while I completely understand why the District (along with everywhere else downtown) charges for parking during evening hours, I don't see any rational means of defining 6pm as "evening," since typically evening hours involve dinner and drinks and don't get rolling until closer to 7. The biggest shock, however, came when I was exiting the AMLI parking garage: my parking fee was THIRTEEN DOLLARS!! And I was there less than an hour!!! I could've quite literally parked on the street ten feet away from Finley's entrance for 90% less!! Honestly, sometimes it feels like AMLI *wants* its District businesses to fail -- and to be clear, nearly every business that's opened up shop there (totaling well over 100) *has* in fact failed, and over a comparatively small time period to boot (12 years). On a (much) brighter note, the FUBAR parking situation doesn't appear to have hurt Finley's business to any discernible extent, possibly because of the huge number of office towers, condos and apartments that have opened up in the area in recent years. Still, if you're a first-time visitor and don't live or work nearby, I'd *strongly* recommend either visiting on a weekday or finding street parking on a weekend rather than paying AMLI's borderline-extortionist parking fees! read more

I am going to start with admitting that I'm a stylist jumper. I'm sorry, it's true. I just can't commit to one stylist at one place... Well, I think I can. It's slowly happening because of Finleys. I'm making progress. First of all, it always smells good in there. It doesn't smell like alcohol or hairspray. There isn't a burning smell. If I could use 2 words to describe it, it would have to be No Frills. The pricing and menu are no frills and I like that they use straight razors for shaves. I don't have a beard but, I bought my dude a gift card for a shave and can't wait until he uses it. I've had three stylists there. One was quite brisk and had a "I don't take shit" kind of attitude which I dig but threw me off. She did however lead me to the perfect cut for my hair and I've stuck to it since. Another was not memorable but, Jessy was by far the most personable and efficient. My time in the chair didn't take long and he even went the extra mile when I wanted it styled a certain way. He was conversational but, quiet when I needed him to be. I was quite hungover and he helped me get out of my funk. I think I've chosen my stylist. read more
