Ive always loved Finns for breakfast but on a re ent Aug morning I changed my mind. I was seduced by the waffle which promised hints of cardamom, my favorite. What u got was a flavorless, pale. Undercooked bread like thing. No crispness whatsoever. Isn't that why we order waffles? Now let's talk about the rubbery scrambled eggs that came with the $23 trout. Nostalgia all over the place! This is a darling cafe tucked up on the east side and has been here for what seems like a lifetime. It's got a cool vibe-something out of the late 1980's. There's indoor and outdoor patio seating and is very comfortable. Service is familiar and attentive-makes you feel like you've been coming here for years. Seat yourself when we walked in. Waitress was friendly and personable. We ordered Finn's Green drink - cucumber, kale, spinach, and celery with lemon wedge. Cucumber- forward. Very light and refreshing. Ordered the fried chicken with asparagus and potatoes. Chicken was crunchy and tender inside. Also had the reuben. Good amount of slice pastrami with a heap of sauerkraut and ample swiss cheese. Not overly dressed. Good flavor. Only down side was the sandwich bottom half was wet, which made eating a bit difficult. May have been sauerkraut juice. Finished with marzipan cake. Generous portion of layered, scratch-made vanilla cake with strawberry preserves, wrapped in a luscious layer of marzipan. Topped with whipped cream and sliced strawberry. Delish! Note to management, it's great that the tables are cleared off quickly, but it's just as important that tables get wiped down. This place was lovely! 20 min wait inside for a table (On a saturday at 11am) so we sat outside with no wait. It started to rain and they put up some little patio covers. The food was perfect! Soft scrambled eggs, crispy bacon and yummy hash browns. The chicken and waffles were so good too! Different but good. French toast was pretty basic but I really enjoyed it. Good food, amazing service & cute space.I visited on a cold winter day (Friday morning, Valentine's day) and the staff were kind enough to bring out fur lining for the chairs outside (so we didn't have to sit on cold metal chairs) while we waited for a table. There was also coffee (free) for those waiting for a table which was a thoughtful touch. Space was welcoming with lots of windows & some cute Norwegian decor along the walls. Lastly, food was yummy. I enjoyed the Norwegian breakfast special with the trout: flaky but would recommend a generous amt of the tartar sauce for flavor. I also loved the sourdough bread that it came with - so buttery! The waffles & chicken were quite good as well; though I wished there was a bit more of the lingenberry sauce. The only thing I didn't love was my chai which was a bit on the milky side (I would have preferred a bit more spice in it) but it was fine. I have worked two blocks from this cafe for years and just learned of it's existence. In honor of our heritage, we stopped by here on Pioneer day. The staff was absolutely lovely. I ordered the spring omelette, and it was divne. It had just enough well flavored Hollandaise, and the Chevre cheese was an incredible addition. I ordered bacon on the side, and it came out perfectly crisp and delicious, and it was a generous portion. My companions ordered chicken and waffles, weinerscnitzle and eggs, and the pancakes. I actually love a diner that has a menu that doesn't have every choice under the sun. If I wanted that, I'd be at the Cheesecake Factory. Extra bonus...you can get lunch as breakfast. As someone who prefers a sandwich or salad over any breakfast dish, this was a perk. I'll be back to take advantage of this option. Pros: My coffee cup (and water) runneth over (kept hot and full). Our server, Kali, was attentive and helpful with recommendations. She was working that patio like a pro. It was nice to have a server who was bright eyed and bushy tailed at 7:30am with the heat just casually rising. Pro: The food was excellent. A friend and I split the chorizo omelet. Don't sleep on this omelet. I was skeptical about feta and chorizo, but they melted together perfectly. We also split the sourdough pancakes. So fluffy and soft. Great service, the hostess and wait staff have always been fantastic. The food is a little over priced for what you get, but you pay for the ambience which is quite pleasant. Royal Omelette was good, nothing special but the hash browns were cooked to perfection. The Weinerschnitzel with the lemon and capers actually paired really well. Again, very decent food, and great for brunch. Their espresso drinks are also really good, rich with flavor. I will have to ask about the beans they use the next time I'm there. read more

We went to Finn's Cafe for brunch yesterday morning, and although the food was good as always, the overall experience could've been better. I believe this is the third time I've been here, but this was the slowest service we've gotten. The waters took a good 10-15 mins after we sat down on the outside patio. The waitress didn't take our orders for another 5-10 mins after that. Our waitress was super friendly but also had way too many tables, most of which were inside. The outside patio was super nice, fortunately the weather was beautiful and they have nice shade coverings. We ordered the spring omelet, which my husband enjoyed, a cinnamon roll, the pasta special (which came with an onion roll), a side salad, and my daughter got the waffles. My only request with the pasta was no prawns. Our food took about an hour (or more) to come out, and as you can see my pasta had prawns on it. They offered to take it back, but there was no way I would wait another hour so we kept it and I just picked them out. I will tell you, our waitress did her best and the homemade thousand island dressing and food were top notch. The service was just super slow and the restaurant was pretty slammed. read more

As cute and unique as this diner is, my past few visits here have been mediocre at best. My boyfriend ordered the chicken and waffles and while the chicken tasted okay, the waffles were not good. People like waffles because the texture is different from pancakes, but this waffle's texture was entirely indistinguishable from a pancake. A good waffle should have a slightly crispy exterior and a soft interior, but this waffle was the same soft texture throughout. In other words, it was a waffle-shaped pancake. I ordered the salmon benedict dish and was sorely disappointed when not one but BOTH of the poached eggs were overcooked. The yolks were not runny at all. The hollandaise sauce also had an odd taste so I ended up not finishing the dish. Even though the ambiance is cute and service is friendly, it's not enough to compensate for the food especially considering the pricing. "American brunch food with a hint of Scandinavia" This is not a place for everyone. If you're looking for a place with bold flavors and exciting ideas, Finns will seem underwhelming. Overall, I think the food is well made with attention to details. It's light and simple. I especially liked the hash brown, crispy without all the grease. The French toast was yummy as well. The ambiance is nice - large shaped windows, simple beautiful furnitures, and outdoor seating. It's a quaint place given its long history in the city. But if it wasn't for that, I think there's not much that cannot be found in other restaurants around town. I think Finns is one of those places I don't love and wouldn't recommend or take my friends to go, but will revisit personally on a slow morning when I don't mind overpaying for something standard and simple. One complaint: a side (fries or salad should be included with a sandwich, not an upcharge...I mean who gets "just a sandwich?"). This beautiful breakfast place was refreshing during my month long stay in Utah. The ambiance reminded me of some of my favorite breakfast restaurants in Los Angeles and I realized that I had been craving that hometown elegance. I highly recommend sitting outdoors; the rosemary bushes and flowers create a nice barrier between the outdoor dining area and the parking lot. It feels intimate and warm. The service was very warm, one of my absolute favorite things about being in Utah was the excellent and friendly customer service. Everywhere I went, and even moreso here, I felt like I was treated like a long-time customer. My cappuccino was excellent and I was thrilled to finally have a great cup of espresso, something I had been craving being subject to only what was available near my hotel. It was smooth, creamy, and delightful. The whole menu looked delicious and I spent quite some time going back and forth on my decision, but ultimately I got the waffle and chicken. Lingonberry jam was too much for me to pass up on. The waffle had a very light flavor, it was a good vessel for the jam and sour cream, but didn't lend itself to much. The chicken was perfectly fried, albeit seasoned less than I wanted. All the same, I was happy with this overall pleasant and sophisticated experience. If/when I come back to Utah I look forward to another cappuccino and trying other menu items. read more

The food tasted great and was honestly a decent value.
