While I was running errands Sunday afternoon I was starving. I almost stopped by White Manna for a pile of burgers, but at the last moment I decided on a healthier option, Mezza Falafel. Much to my disappointment as I was about to walk in I discovered Mezza Falafel is closed on Sundays! I journeyed back to my car, starving with my head hung low when I noticed 'Fire Pit BBQ' next door. I was famished and I needed to eat, so I walked in expecting a nice pile of charred barbecue goodness. I was fooled. The sign outside reads "Fire pit BBQ" what i found inside was far from what I would consider BBQ food. This place reminds me of a combination of a Spanish rice, beans and chicken joint and a failed attempt at replicating 'Juicy Platters' in Fair Lawn. Once inside while reading the menu I noticed a Portuguese flag on the menu and they mentioned "we speak Spanish and Portuguese" In retrospect these were clear indicators that this was not going to be the fire pit barbecue experience I had hoped for. We ordered our food at the front desk and sat at the table and waited... And then we waited some more... And then just a little bit more for a total of approximately 25 minutes before my chicken, rice, and black beans came out Colombian bodega style. The BBQ was average quality at best, brought down by the overly salty rice and beans, The soup was almost certainly prepared previously at an external location, if not from a can. I did not take my leftovers. I would probably rate them one star but they did actually have an open fire pit that was being used to barbecue whole chickens so I guess that's a plus. Clearly this location is meant to cater to the hospital lunch crowd and should be avoided for alternative solutions if you are driving. Oh well, you win some and you loose some. That's what I get for walking into an unknown restaurant and letting my stomach do the thinking without properly researching ahead of time. read more

Have always wanted to check this place out and decided to check out their website, only to find out that the prices was not listed. Fortunately, I was in the neighborhood and went on over.I ordered the half chicken (they serve whole as well) with rice and beans it came with a little steam veg and bread. The service was pretty quick and the server was pleasant. The chicken was tasty, except for the breast part it was very dry. The portion is decent and you can probably feed two people. My only complaint would be that there was a lot of salt - this was only realized after completing the meal because I was drinking water like crazy. 4 stars for a flavorful authentic Portuguese BBQ made fresh to order. I recently spent a weekend back home in NJ and this was something I requested. There are a few places in the area that offer the same selection, but my parents (Portuguese immigrants) prefer this restaurant. The BBQ chicken is packed full of flavor and fired up all day. Your always getting fresh food. It's juicy, flavorful, and just the right amount of spice. I usually go with fries and rice as the sides but some go with rice and beans. This is my usual go to dish or the combo of chicken and ribs. We usually buy 2 whole chicken platters with fries and rice and that feeds 8 of us. I could eat here multiple times a week! Delicious. The only down fall that I could possibly point out is the tight parking lot. They are located across the way from a hospital so sometimes it's hard to get in and out of the tight lot with oncoming traffic. BUT!!! They do deliver! And they deliver to the surrounding towns so you never have to leave your house if you live nearby. Great Portuguese food! Great authenticity! Great delivery service! I ordered a combo- half pork ribs and half beef ribs- with fries and rice. Let me start off my saying- the meat was perfectly tender and cooked to my liking. It was well seasoned and definitely worth what I paid. The pork ribs were probably my favorite- great balance of meat to fat. It was juicy and tender- needed a bunch of napkins. The beef ribs were also fantastic- a touch of hot sauce was the little spice it needed. The sides on the other hand- definitely could do without. The French fries were old- not made to order- did not have an ounce of salt. They were lumpy and not crispy. I would never order fried from here again. The rice was bland- needed seasoning. I gave this place a 4/5 because these guys know how to cook there meat- it was delicious. I suggest you stay away from the fries though. read more

All I can say is that the food was a 10 out of 10 and the platter could feed three hungry people. My new favorite spot! You will not be disappointed. We got the half grilled chicken and Portuguese sausage for lunch. None of the food stood out. The chicken was not juicy and you did not get much of a taste of the seasoning or spices. I live out of state and make sure I get to fire pit (almost) every time I come back to visit. The service, food portion and quality of the food is outstanding. The owner is the nicest and the employees are always so genuine and happy to serve you. If I could give this restaurant 10 stars I would. Everything is always on point. Great BBQ. Can't beat their combos. Chicken, Pork Ribs, Short Ribs, & Choricuo are all delicious. Slab bacon is great. Sliders are fantastic. Sides are all also very good the steamed vegetables are always perfectly cooked and not overdone like many places and the Spanish fries are better than you get at any of the popular Spanish steakhouses in the area, perfectly crispy. I've been eyeing this place for awhile, as soon as a sign saying that a bbq place was opening up. They finally opened not too long ago, and today I decided to try them out. The restaurant itself is very nice, and really clean. Well decorated. They do have some seating in the front, and a tv on the wall for you to watch while you're eating or waiting for your food. They had a pile of bags of charcoal stacked up, not sure if it was for decoration or you can actually buy them. I thought it was an interesting touch, though. The people at the counter were very attentive and friendly. I ordered the Pork Spare Ribs, and they were prepared fairly fast. When I got home, I took a bit out of one of the ribs; it was very meaty and had a nice flavor, even though there was no sauce on it (I didn't want any) All in all, I really like this place and I hope they do well. After a long day at the hospital across the street we happened on this restaurant. The food is Portuguese BBQ with an American BBQ twist. Portions are HUGE. Everything we had is very tasty, we ordered an assortment of meats and sides. I especially liked the rice and beans. The owner and the staff we all very friendly. I read through few of the reviews before writing my own. It's true, there are maybe 7 parking spaces available so taking a chance and parking across the street at the Plaza with Starbucks may be a better option. It's been talked about but beef short ribs are very good. While you only have two choices 2/4 short ribs at $9/$14(??), I think it's $14, it's a pretty good deal and they are definitely generous with rice and fries. Also, it's a buck more, but I'd encourage you to check out the sweet potato fries or the garlic fries...very, very good, although take-out is not recommended for the fries, gets really soggy and loses its true essence! I've also ordered the combo #4 and let me tell you that this plate lasted me 3 meals! And seriously, I'm a meat lover, look at my profile pic.! We picked up lunch here today and it was really great... from reading my prior reviews, you can see that it hasn't always been such a wonderful eating experience. It's about time a true authentic Portuguese BBQ came to town and they even have Sumol (a Portuguese carbonated drink) in Pineapple or Orange. The food has just the right amount of spices and it's very tasty (it was even better the second time we picked up food). The chicken is juicy, the skirt steak is cooked to exact temp, the fries are good, and the yellow rice isn't over cooked. The prices are pretty much in line with the portions you get (and for the area). I mean, it's more expensive than McDonalds but cheaper than Outback. The staff is extremely friendly, helpful and accommodating. You can eat in, take out or get local delivery. The restaurant is clean and simply but creatively decorated (just as a BBQ place should be). The parking lot is accessed behind the building from the side street but don't even bother parking in there because it's tiny and tight. You're better off parking on the side street. So bottom line, support a local (new) business because this place is worth giving a try (or even a second try) and I hope it sticks around for many years to come! read more

My son had heard about this place from a few of his co-workers so my husband and I ordered few of their take out dishes to try. First off let me say the portions are huge and the manager was very nice. It did take a while to get our order but everything was hot and fresh. We ordered a Chicken and rib combo and a pork/shrimp stew plus some chicken soup. You do get a lot of food but we were not crazy about the seasoning. The sauce in the pork/ shrimp dish wasn't a hit. The BBQ sauce on the Chicken and ribs just tasted like a hot wing sauce which didn't really enhance the food. The rice and beans were good as well as the chicken soup. We were told it is a little spicy & I love spicy food but the seasoning just didn't do anything for us. No one liked the pickled veggies. This weekend we ordered a whole order of Bbq Pork Ribs with Rice and Sweet Potato Fries and NY Strip Steak with Rice and Beans. They delivered to Maywood in just under an hour. The meats and sides were perfectly seasoned. The portions were large; we ate a lot but still had leftovers. The prices were reasonable, too. My only issue with the place is that they do not have enough parking. You either have to go behind the building and hope you get one of the four parking spots that they share with another restaurant or you drive down a little bit into the residential areas and park on the street. Do not park across the street where Starbucks/Bank of America is. But it's worth all the hassle. Good food is worth a few sacrifices. read more
