Fire + Wine offers delicious Italian fusion cuisine that is perfect for a more intimate meal. It was my first time visiting this restaurant and I was very happy with my experience. I am so grateful that they do reservations. I believe they accept walk-ins for outdoor seating and reservations for dine-in. Personally speaking, I was so glad that I chose to make a reservation. The outdoor seating seemed way too packed to be safe in my opinion. My family works in healthcare so I'm more aware of things like that than the average person. I love that they have plexiglass inside separating the booths. They also require masks. They also have a 1.5 hour limit so that's something to keep in mind. I felt very comfortable dining in. The host seated us at a more wider bench at first but it felt kind of awkward since there was no plexiglass or anything for protection and it was a little odd since my view was of the many people eating so it felt a bit uncomfortable. I asked the host if we could switch to a booth and he was very gracious and switched us with no problem. I also appreciated that we were provided with a laminated QR code so we can all view the menu from our phones! We ordered a few small plates: Asiago Stuffed Gnocchi ($14), Zucchini Fries ($11), and Crispy Cooked Pork Belly ($14). The gnocchi was out of this world. The flavor profile was a stroke of genius and I could have honestly ordered a second. The Zucchini Fries were also good and a healthier version of a classic. I believe the dip is also fresh which is a nice touch. I wasn't in love with the pork belly. It was good- it just wasn't my type. For all my fellow Filipinos, it resembles the famous lechon dish! For the main course, my sister and I have this system whenever we go out to eat. We each both get different things and then split it so that we can enjoy tasting the menu! We ordered the Wild Mushroom Ravioli ($19) and the Vodka Pasta ($17). We asked our server if we would be able to get those two dishes split in half already and they were very accomodating! It was absolutely delicious. The food tasted so fresh! You can tell they choose their ingredients wisely because the blend of flavors was divine. I personally was shocked at how much I loved the Vodka Pasta more than the ravioli (which was still good, though)! I'm normally a ravioli kind of gal through and through but I thought the ravioli tasted a tad bit ordinary even though I know they added gourmet ingredients like truffle oil. Maybe it was just my taste buds? My sister agreed though. In comparison, the Vodka Pasta was really something else. My sister enjoyed everything as well and appreciated that there was a heat to the dish but it wasn't spicy- which attests to a seasoned chef who knows exactly how to blend flavors. My friend ordered the Spaghetti and Meatballs and enjoyed it as well! She frequents the restaurant a lot and claimed that it was her "second kitchen". As for dessert, we ordered the Panna Cotta ($6) and Butterscotch Budino ($6), which were delicious. They are both very rich and indulgent so I'm glad we shared! I haven't tried anything like it so I was pleasantly surprised. The ambiance is beautiful and romantic, the service was solid and accomodating. I think the only thing I would warn someone before coming here is that since it is finer cuisine, they should expect to see that in the check. You can tell they use fresh ingredients and that each dish is really well made so I think for finer dining the price was fair. Especially too, it is downtown so it is more upscale. I just wouldn't recommend it to a family who is sticking to a budget but rather would recommend it for very special occasions! The food ranges about $15-$25+. Truthfully, there is a dish for everyone here. The menu is vast and offers various options for all the foodies out there. I admire the innovative menu too- that kind of thing is hard to find in the suburbs. They even have a "Chef's Playground" or special of the day which promotes creativity! I always appreciate when restaurants do that- it shows a desire to try new things. A little detail that I find worthwhile to bring up were their use of sturdy paper straws which makes a huge impact on the environment! I highly recommend coming at an earlier hour to avoid the rush and to make a reservation to dine-in. I will be sure to order the Asiago Gnocchi again. Televisions and "fine" dining? What?!? This place has really gone downhill since we first started dining here. They've ruined the elegant candle lit atmosphere of the dining room with a TELEVISION that casts a bright glare over your dining experience. Because no one dining was watching the television, we asked if it could be turned off and were told that the owner (who was not present) has decreed that the TV is NEVER TO BE TURNED OFF, under no circumstances!! What's with this trend of catering to screen addicts who cannot exist without a television in their peripheral vision? Some of us don't need to be overstimulated to enjoy a meal. And the food was bad, too. The mushroom ravioli in a bland white sauce lacked any remote flavor and the short rib risotto tasted like someone dumped a shaker of salt on it. The bread somehow managed to be both hard AND rubbery. If you're looking for a dining experience for people who are awake in their senses and into the here and now, this is not the place for you. It's more like a glorified sports bar masquerading as "fine dining." I guess if you're used to tacky suburban sports bars, this would seem like fine dining. Hardly. UPDATE: Changed my two star rating to one star after the owner himself responded to me (see comment below this rating), saying "Another YELPER bashing. Makes us laugh!" Uh...okaaaaay... A restaurant owner that characterizes customer opinions as "bashing" and then "laughs" at that customer's feedback? I guess that explains why this place has gone downhill, if they respond to customer concerns with that type of arrogant bullying and gaslighting. Of COURSE if you are so thin skinned that you can't hear any criticism without resorting to petty retorts, then you're going to degrade the quality of your restaurant. Duh. Notice, too, how the owner just GUSHES over anyone here that gives his restaurant a positive review! If you like his restaurant..you're awesome and obviously have great taste! If you don't like his restaurant...you're just a negative basher that can be laughed at. Wow. I looked through the other one star reviews and Michael Vai has a pattern of bullying and gaslighting people who post one star reviews. I also posted this review on Facebook, and Michael Vai continued to gaslight me, saying. "Oh my...your back here now." Uh...that's "you're" not "your," bub. and "If you don't like TV's then don't come in." Sound familiar? As in "If you don't like America, get the heck out!" not "Gee, thanks for the feedback, it helps us to be a better restaurant/country." Hmmmmm... Then he went on to play the victim some more, about how "hard" he works and how frustrated he is with "strangers" that "don't care" and just "bash" him. Restaurants don't get much better than the experiences I've had at this restaurant. Besides having amazing food, the service and ambiance are both warm and welcoming every time I've eaten here. They don't accept reservations, but they do have a priority wait list. Just calling ahead and putting your name on the list is almost mandatory here, as the wait times have been known to exceed 2 hours. When you walk in, you're greeted immediately and you get a view of the quaint little bar. On the opposite side of the bar, they have a rather large chalkboard listing their daily specials, drink specials, and any new wines they are serving. Highly recommend taking a glance at the board, because their specials and drinks aren't your run of the mill orders and are always worth trying. During this visit, I was able to try the drink special called "Pearfect Sunday". As you can guess from the name, I visited on a Sunday. The drink included goose pear, lemon juice, strawberry liquor, and blueberry ginger beer. Excellent drink and went down rather smoothly. Besides the special of the day, I was also able to try one of the bartenders old fashioned which was superbly crafted. The menu is expansive and there is literally something for everyone. The first section lists a bunch of small plates. These plates are great for a group of people that enjoy eating multiple things while out to dinner and sharing. A few of my favorites are the meatball sliders, the honey and ricotta, black pepper shrimp, and literally any of the gnocchi. This is some of the best gnocchi I've tried, so I highly suggest getting a plate for the table to try together. Many times I've come here and just eaten through the small plate list and haven't even gotten to the main menu. Besides the small plates they also have brick oven pizzas which are excellent for a small group at the table. This time we ended up with the Soppressata which is spicy salami, house mozzarella, basil, oregano, roasted onions, chili flakes, and a spicy honey drizzle. I'm shocked I never tried this concoction before, but it was hands down one of the best I've had here, or anywhere for that matter. The combination of spicy and sweet was amazing. As for the main meals, the table had the beef medallions, the whitefish, and the special of the day Chicken Caprese. All the meals were superbly cooked and flavorful as always. I'm attaching the pictures to get an idea of the plates and accompaniments. Although the entrees were fantastic, I still think the best way to enjoy this place is to order through the small plate section, throw in a salad and a couple of their pizzas for the table. Nothing brings a table together more than being able to share some food together. This place nails it on the head with being able to do that. I'll be back, and I'm making sure to use their priority wait list. If the wait is too long, they have a few sister restaurants serving similarly excellent food and small plates. This was our first time eating here and it was a nice place with good service. HOWEVER, when the server seated us, she told us we have 90 minutes to eat our meal and we will be asked to leave, if it takes us longer than that. I am 56 years old and this is the first time I've ever had a restaurant limit our time eating in their establishment. I get that it was a Saturday night, but we were going to order 2 or 3 bottles of wine and celebrate a birthday. After hearing there was a limited time to eat, we chose not to drink any alcohol, so Fire + Wine lost a bunch of money that night. As for the food, it was very good. The Kale salad was very well done and the appetizers were solid, but the best entree was the 14 oz. Bone-In Pork Chop. First, I must say that I've NEVER written a review on any restaurant, retail store, doctor's office or any place ever before, but I feel I MUST let others know what my husband and I experienced tonight (Valentine's Day) at Fire & Wine in Glen Ellyn. I made reservations in early January (about 6 weeks ago), because it was recommended by one of my neighbors who had gone there and thought it was nice. Since I live in a neighboring town, I made a reservation for 5:45pm... slightly before the rush of the dinner crowd. When my husband and I arrived, there were at least 5 other couples with the same reservation start time of 5:45pm. We checked in at the hostess desk and stepped off to the side to wait our turn to be seated. One of the hostesses handed buzzers to two couples who were waiting when we arrived, and one who arrived after us, and said "Your tables are being cleared, so give us a couple minutes." Then she said to us, "Your table will be ready next." So I turned to one of the couples with the buzzer (who was waiting when we arrived) and asked "How do they determine which table one should get? You guys were here before us." And of course, they said they didn't know. And within about 5 or 6 minutes, they called our name, and we began to follow another "seating" hostess to our seat. As we proceeded down the steps to the main dining room, she placed the menus on a table that was honestly sitting in the aisle... to which I said, "oh no, can we please sit at some other table? Like this empty one next to it?" Right away she said "no, I don't think so." And as she was saying that, a manager walking by in the walkway overheard my question and sternly said, "THIS IS THE ONLY TABLE THAT'S AVAILABLE!" and continued to walk on by. So this is where I blame myself, I should have turned around, walked out and gone up the street to a fast food place... but it is Valentine's Day and I wanted to spend a nice evening with my husband, at WHAT I THOUGHT was a nice place and enjoy a meal since we don't get to do that often. Instead, I asked her to check with the hostesses out front to see if we can sit at one of the other numerous EMPTY party-of-2 tables that was visible to me (at a quick glance around, I counted about 10 empty 2-seater tables at that time). But of course, she came back and said, "this is the only table." I wanted to ask what about all the other empty tables around, but my husband did not want to make waves since we were the only elderly African American couple there. The waiter approached our table about the same time, and I told him that I really didn't want to sit in the walkway. He agreed that it was in a bad spot - with EVERYONE whizzing by, so he tried to see if he could move us but was also told that "it was the only table for us." He also told us that a table is NOT normally positioned in this spot, but they were trying to get more seating for couples in the restaurant because of Valentine's Day. Sadly, I placed my order for the cheapest entrée, and neither my husband nor I purchased an appetizer, wine, coffee, dessert or anything else. Yummmm! We decided to try this place after trying out maize and mash just across the street a week prior. We love risotto and arancini so we thought, why not try it out. I cannot wait to stop in again to try more off the menu. We started with the arancini and it was a very good size we both had about three each. Then my friend ordered the braised beef short rib entree which was delicious I was eating off the plate. I was in between a pizza dish and gnocchi and I got the gnocchi it was great, but I definitely want to go back and try the pizzas. And maybe even a dessert or two. I got it without jalapeños, so it wouldn't be spicy! Im obsessed. We arrived at 5 PM and it already was packed. I was in shock, because I really thought 5 PM people would not be there yet. It was an HOUR wait, but soooo worth it! We were told this place is packed the minute they open around 3 PM, so if you really want to cut down your wait time call ahead. Also, we were told that if you want to call ahead, do it a couple days before because the slots fill up. I understand why! Okay, back to the food.. While we were waiting, a woman told us to try the Romaine Salad. She said the lettuce was grilled. Hmm.. sounds intriguing. We ordered and shared and WOW, the taste was incredible. Our waitress was extremely helpful and friendly. We had the bean dip, octopus and mussels as appetizers. All of which were delicious. My husband had the Cajun shrimp & I had the veggie orecchiette. Even though we were extremely satisfied we had to try some dessert so we had the limoncello ice and fried donuts. Absolutely loved the atmosphere and like I said our waitress was fantastic! Came in for a quick, early dinner with some friends and had exactly the meal we needed! FOOD: For 4 people, we ordered 3 small plates (gnocchi, octopus and pork belly) and 2 pizzas (mushroom & kale and butchers block). All the food was fantastic but the gnocchi was hands down the favorite. It was perfectly cooked, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, with a delicious sauce. The pork belly was also standout and falls apart as soon as you cut it. SERVICE: The service was great! It was quick and attentive, and everyone was just so nice. When we ordered warm water because we were cold, they had no problems with that. Our food also came out very quickly. We originally avoided coming here because they don't accept reservations (just pre-calling with no guaranteed table). Wish we had stopped by sooner, it was so good!! We went around 6pm on a Friday and got seated right away but the place was very close to full. The staff was very friendly and attentive. The small plates came out very quickly (maybe 8-10 minutes after ordering). The pork belly as so delicious and crispy that I didn't get a chance to take a picture because it we had already eaten so much of it - melts in your mouth. Ricotta and honeycomb was great tasting and fresh. The meatball sliders had an olive oil on the side that was flavored - with a kick to it and it was mouthwateringly delicious. The last small plate was the octopus, which came with potatoes, green beans, and a spicy aioli. We may have ordered too much (our eyes were bigger than our stomachs) because by the time the pasta came we had to take most of it home, but that's ok because we get the enjoy the meal again for leftovers! By the time we left, it appeared there were many groups of people waiting for their tables outside. I would suggest getting there before 6pm otherwise expect a wait. It would be worth the wait!
