Love the ambiance and charm of this place. We were lucky enough to snag a 5:00pm-6:30pm reservation for New Years Eve. One of the few nights they take reservations. We had a wonderful server, Stephanie who was attentive and did not rush us one bit. We had a wonderful meal. I highly recommend the lobster bisque and grilled romaine salad. Great local place for meeting up with friends and family. The food is a hit or miss. Gluten free pizzas have been coming out too burnt lately and salty. Salads are delicious - although they need to wash the lettuce first because twice I have noticed a small bug crawl out of my romaine. The pasta is delicious. Most of the servers are sweet. In the years I have been going to Fire and Wine I had two different servers that were not nice and very rude to our table. I guess it was just a bad night for them, but they still should have treated the customers with respect. All in all this place is nice to grab a bite to eat with a glass of wine! read more

We dined outside in the tent yesterday. Food and drinks were very good and our server we friendly and efficient. The meatball sliders were fantastic. However we noticed the inside of the restaurant had a number of parties dining inside. There is currently a ban in DuPage County for indoor dining due to COVID19 so it was disappointing to see them violating the order to refrain from indoor dining. We recently enjoyed a fantastic meal here. The service was just about perfect. The food was very good, with reasonable prices and decent portions. The bartenders were quite friendly and went out of their way to try making an off-beat libation per my request. Additionally, the cocktail special, The Aquavit, was very unique and fresh. We tried the bean dip, kale salad, bolognese, and spaghetti. All of the above were quite good. The flatbread with the bean dip appears to be the home made pizza crust and it was awesome. I couldn't stop eating until the dip was finished, and then I spent the next five minutes wiping the bowl out with the flatbread. The downsides: (1) The place was really noisy. We had a hard time holding conversation. (2) The gelato was no good. I'm not sure it was really gelato, and it tasted like store-bought Edy's ice cream. It was an unfortunate punctuation to an otherwise fantastic meal. I'd just take it off the menu. 3) The spaghetti and meatballs had a real kick to them, but is wasn't described that way on the menu. I am not normally a yelp writer, as are many other hospitality workers, but for Michael and Chef Brian I am completely willing and happy to do so. Here is a summary of our night at Fire & Wine: 1. We show up with no reservation, get seated from a full restaurant within 5 minutes by Michael (the owner) himself. Very nice guy. 2. Our Server Andy promptly greets us within 1 minute with water. Starts going over wine, then my Fiancé and I say "No, we are craft beer drinkers" he immediately stops the wine speech and makes craft beer suggestions and says he loves IPA's as well. So we talk beer with Andy (also nice and passionate about food and craft beer) 3. Tuscan Kale salad and Mussels- don't miss these items. Amazing. Chef Brian knows how to treat kale by giving it a thin shred and champagne vinaigrette. And the mussels, my Fiancé ate the pancetta white wine sauce with garlic and fennel like it was soup. 4. Michael stops by to check up on us, and we talk food and pizza and many other things. GREAT GUY. All I can say about him. 5. Pizza (Speck & Poblano) perfection with a perfect light char on the "00" made dough. 6. Salted Caramel and Butterscotch Custard! I got 2 bites before I had to surrender it to my better half (who loved it). Fire & Wine is hands down one of the best experiences start to finish I have ever had at a restaurant. Always wonderful service. Weekends get packed, so either come early or be prepared to wait. The restaurant serves small plates, so order a bunch of items and share with your party. Variety is the spice of life, after all. What we've tried: Vodka pasta was delicious. Peperonata Crostini was good (it was a toasted, crunchy piece of bread with a mixture of Peperonata on top along with a fresh, dollop of Ricotta cheese). I loved everything but the olives. Grilled Romaine was so unique and yummy. Meatballs al Forno were light, perfectly seasoned and the waitress added fresh grated Parmesan for the perfect bite. Meatball side dish comes with 2. My husband loves the hanger steak & he gets it every time, but it is so full of arugula, chimichurri and garlic that he needs a minty fluoride treatment soon after. I find it too salty for my liking. We had mozzarella triangles awhile ago with homemade marinara that were lightly breaded, crunchy on outside with warm, gooey melt-in-your-mouth mozzarella on the inside. They took them off the menu...why?!? They were delicioso! I'm not sure why we haven't tried their wood fired pizzas yet; I hear they are amazing. They have a decent selection of craft beer, hand-crafted cocktails and good wine. Their bathrooms were clean, have fresh flowers, pretty photographs & provide lotion. Visited 6.4.20 (1st time) Not my first dining experience out in Glen Ellyn since coming out of quarantine. Given our current state, I was somewhat prepared for some restrictions. After reading your guidelines for using the restroom this morning I am still in utter shock of how I was treated last night. Prior to getting up from my table I put my mask on as required. As I reached for the door handle about 3 people yelled "STOP!". I was quite shocked as one would imagine. There was one young, thin Male, 1 blonde male & 1 older woman. This woman had a "house dress on, black slipper like shoes, hair up in a bun with a gray sweatband around her head (very sloppy looking compared to the young male host & server). She was incredibly rude. When I turned around (again in shock) I said to all "relax" she quickly responded "WHAT DID YOU SAY TO ME?". I looked at her as sharply as I could in the eyes and said "R E L A X!" she stormed into the bar & I can only guess complained to someone about me. I was/am not happy with the "short questionnaire" as your website describes it. I was asked for my full name AND phone number. That is an excessive invasion of privacy. The temperature taking, asking if I showed any signs of Covid in the last XX days & mask I am fine with & believe is within a respectful degree of reason. Not only was the your "lead host" out of line talking to me that way but the fact that her entire face was covered by a mask & sunglasses I found to be extremely disrespectful. Given that masks must be worn by staff, they should NOT be allowed to wear sunglasses. For the invasion of privacy & rude behavior it was not worth the nearly $90 I paid for just myself at my table of 3. It's really a shame that one bad employee can ruin a dinner that I had been so looking forward to with friends since quarantining for weeks like so many others. Our server Katie was very kind and apologetic which is more than I can say for the management who should have come to the table and apologized as they would in any other normal dining experience. Fire + Wine gets a lot of attention in Glen Ellyn these days, and it's well deserved. We ordered quite a few things off their menu, and *every* single thing I tasted was the best of its kind. We started off with the arancini (and a Vanilla Porter for me, which was quite good thank you very much). As far as we could tell it was half real risotto and real mozzarella on the inside, with two different elements of crunchiness on the outside; the batter, and a smattering of thin, crunchy onion rings. There were six in total, and they don't get any better than this. Just as we got done with the arancini, our pizzas came out. My wife got the prosciutto pie, and all I really managed to eat of it was a piece of prosciutto (absolutely marvelous) and an olive (mellowed, but still very flavorful). I was torn between artichoke and pesto, and the bianco; on recommendation from the server, I picked the artichoke and pesto and was rewarded with pleasantly bitter arugula, buttery artichoke and fresh pesto. In both cases the crust was perfect. Flavorful, soft on the inside but with the perfect amount of chew. Top quality fresh ingredients all around, too. For dessert we decided to get a butterscotch budino, but were also given a panna cotta, and I didn't argue. The panna cotta was creamy and slightly tangy, melding well with a whole blackberry and sauce on top. The budino was out-of-this-world excellent; thick, creamy, rich. Save room for dessert here, folks. I have no doubts that we'll be back here again, for the best pizza we've had since we came back from Naples. read more

I've never been here before but wanted to take my parents somewhere new for their wedding anniversary dinner. I came in knowing I would review this place for you guys because I had a large party and tons of dishes would be ordered! FYI: They do not take reservations but they let you call ahead and that puts your table ahead of any walk ins. So call ahead. Absolutely call. This place was RIDICULOUSLY BUSY for a Tuesday night. I called and they offered us a high top table. We arrived exactly when we said we would and only waited for a few minutes before we were greeted by the manager who offered us a booth instead of the table because she didn't want us waiting any longer. We actually preferred a booth because we didn't have to worry about kids playing on chairs! Speaking of kids -- I was afraid that mine would be too loud for this environment. The restaurant was full of diverse groups and even other children. It's kind of loud in general -- but not in an obnoxious way at all. They even provide a kids menu for the little ones. Heidi was our server. What a doll. Interacted with my kids, knew the menu, and was super informative. She never got an order wrong. We started with their special drink the cucumber sangria. Super summery feeling and fresh. Their alcohol selection in general was great. They can make pretty much anything you ask for. The table shared Zucchini Fries. They weren't greasy -- my kid thought they were French fries and ate them. The table tried everything from pastas, pizzas, calzones. It was all very large and VERY scrumptious! Everything tasted fresh too. We all agreed that their pizza dough was out of this world. Vodka sauce was done incredibly well. We tried a ton of desserts. Gelato (offered in a ton of flavors), their Italian doughnuts offered with chocolate sauce for dipping, flourless chocolate cake that came with berry compote and a scoop of vanilla gelato, Nutella calzone which was huge!!! But it probably was the best dessert we had there. Nothing disappointed! Thank you Fire + Wine for this lovely night out. Thank you Heidi for being so gracious -- you do a fantastic job and work incredibly hard! Props! I recommend this place! Title: Still scratching my head over this experience Themes: Food was great, wait staff is friendly and team oriented, management lacks integrity, and the GM treats women poorly. Situation: My wife and I were out for a double date with good friends who are Fire + Wine regulars and excited to show us their favorite spot. Our kids were at home with their favorite sitter which meant we were enjoying the sweet freedom of a night out as adults. Life was feeling preeeety good. Whoops: The server returned with the first round of drinks when the tray tipped ever so slightly, sending fig martini's spiraling. Clink, splash, crash, splash. Fortunately, our wives were far enough from the splash zone to avoid the soaking that my buddy and I incurred. Our pants and shirts were wet with sticky fig martini. The poor server was flustered and in his attempt to clean it up, knocked over a pitcher of water on the table. It took about 10 minutes to get the glass cleaned off the floor, dry the floor, dry the table and of course, to dry ourselves. And that was with Manuel busting tail to make the carnage go away (Thanks Manuel, you were awesome). Now remember, we were out enjoying the sweet freedom of a night out, and accidents happen, so at this point everything is still good. I'm sure they'll comp a drink or two and we'll call it good, right? So we move on with our evening in high spirits. Downward Spiral: This is when everything begins to go south. A different server comes by apologizing for what happened and 'promises not to spill any drinks' as she delivers our replacement cocktails. Then another lady comes by (who we later found out was actually the manager, Heidi) and promises not to 'throw any more drinks at us' as she checks in on us. Apparently everybody on staff knows what happened, but no talk of making it right. So, right there I bet my friend a single American dollar that Fire + Wine was going to move on without comping anything. He quickly took the bet making some humorous remark about how he "felt bad taking my money." The Deception: The check arrives and we are pleased to see a line item credit for two complimentary drinks. Great. Credit cards come out and we are about to pay.... when we see it. They charged us for all 6 drinks INCLUDING THOSE SPILLED. So what they ACTUALLY did was comp the drinks they spilled. My friend owes me a dollar. We bring this up with the server and he says his 'hands are tied' but that Heidi (manager) told him to give us two free drink coupons for our NEXT visit (next visit? And was he going to bring these out if we hadn't asked? Perception says no). So we ask for a manager. 10 minutes pass. A gent named Nate comes by and introduces himself as the GM and says he was told we wanted to speak with him. Awkward silence. Ok, he's going to make me work for this. Nate, I ask him, what do you know about the situation that happened here? He says' well we, and I say WE because WE do everything here as a team... (what an awkward start. he goes on to repeat the situation in detail and then ends with)... and we checked in to make sure you were ok and comped some drinks. He stops again, creating an awkward silence and waiting for us to respond. We at the table look around at each other in stunned silence. Did he really just acknowledge the issue and defend what happened? My friend calmly explains, "taking two spilled drinks off the check is not considered comping". Nate is getting agitated now and says, I already told you that we took care of the drinks and that's all I can do. More silence. My friend's wife, who has been quiet to this point, is now flustered and yet politely starts to chime in when Nate cuts her off and curtly tells her that if she will 'stop interrupting him and let him finish (you get the drift). She feels completely shamed. And only now, after ALL of this, Nate finally puts down a new check (that he apparently had with him the ENTIRE time), and tells us that he comped 'a round' to make everything right. (a round would have been 4 drinks Nate, you comped 2, and why on God's green earth did you not just lead with that when you showed up?). We paid and left, leaving Heidi's two free drink coupons on the table. This was never about the money Fire +Wine, just about treating people well, like you care about more than turning tables & managing expenses. So much of this experience would be forgivable, but the deceptive fake comping, the decision to repeatedly avoid an issue that could have been easily fixed, and the wife shaming were all unnecessary. We will not be back. In the end, I feel worse for our friends who considered Fire + Wine to be one of their favorite date night spots, and they just crossed F+W off the list. Parting food thoughts: While we will not go back, you might, so would highly recommend the Asiago Stuffed Gnocchi, Ricotta Honeycomb, Mussels, and Wild Mushroom Ravioli. read more

Michael, I cannot believe you are questioning whether we really had a reservation. (You'd be wise not to argue with folks who have legitimate grievances about your restaurant.) Check your books. I had to leave a voicemail asking for a reservation, and get a callback, which I've never had to do before. I'm certainly not going to share the name of the poor server who was honest with us about the tsunami atmosphere. Our party of three arrived just before our reservation time at 7:00, and sat at the bar for not quite an hour 'til we finally were seated. There were several young women managing the seating, and they were polite, but clearly overwhelmed. Was there really a manager on duty? I couldn't tell! To me, the minimum 'ambiance' in a restaurant would be that I can hear my guest without shouting when she is 12 inches away from me, and that I'm seated reasonably close to my reservation time. Tonight I ordered take out from here for the first time and felt like I had to update my yelp review because of how great it was. For starters, the bar area was super packed (understandable, it was a Friday night). However, what was noteable is that a few times staff barely grazed me when walking past and each time stopped to sincerely apologize which caught me off guard in a pleasent way. If they hadn't stopped and said something I really wouldn't have noticed honestly, but it really speaks to the high service standards everyone has here! My order itself was another testament to quality standards in place with kitchen staff as well. Whoever packed my order thought of everything! They packed everything individually so by the time I got home my bread was still toasted/crisp as it wasn't just tossed into the same container as the pasta. This alone would've been great, but they even made sure to also give me little containers of fresh grated parmesan and hot chili flakes for the pasta. Seriously, A+ kitchen staff!!!! read more

I was glad that their vegetarian options on the menu had increased which made the experience even more enjoyable. Excellent service, delicious gin based drink special with cucumber and a spicy and sweet sugar rim. Cooked pizza dough was hot and fresh but very plain so don't expect it to have any tomatoes as most pizza bread does. Paccheri bolognese was the bomb. So flavorful and creamy! The chicken and pasta was a breaded chicken breast paillard with a garlicky sauce, fresh mozzarella, bruschetta tomatoes and arugula. A small portion of creamy spaghetti alfredo was a good counterpoint to the crispy chicken. The pan roasted salmon was really underwhelming. So we made a reservation for valentines day since its one of the only days they take them!...I wanted to come back here because of the gluten free options. They did call and leave 3 voicemails saying if I don't confirm they will be giving away my table ( which I already did every single time ) so that was annoying I called back a few times without them to check as well because I didn't want my table given away. We got the octopus and crispy pork belly for an appetizer. The meat of the pork belly was over cooked so we just ate the fatty part. (Least favorite part of the meal). They had potatoes on the plate with it were hard so we didn't eat it. The octopus was great! Good portion. Veggies on the plate were perfect. For an entree we shared... Filet medallions - the meat was tender but didn't have any flavor. For $21, definitely a skip for us. Gluten free vodka pasta - The flavors were delicious but we felt as if we got jipped on the portion of the pasta. We ordered it because we had seen a few tables eating it and when we got the plate it was like 1/4 of the portion we saw at other peoples tables. It looked like someone took huge bites out of it. Maybe its because we had ordered it gluten free? Not really sure but thats $17 plus an extra couple dollars for gluten free pasta for just noodles and sauce no meat no veggies were in it... even though the flavor was good it was not worth the 4 bites. Gluten free flat bread - His favorite part of the meal. The flat bread crust was crispy. You could tell the mozzarella and ingredients were fresh. Dessert we got the butterscotch pudding. So good! I had been wanting to try this place for awhile now and so we decided to go for my birthday dinner in Nov. Fire + Wine did not disappoint! We split the Sopressata pizza and it was a definite highlight, with the perfect level of spiciness. My bf, who is typically a pretty by-the-books chicken parm lover, had the chicken caprese w/ pasta and couldn't stop raving about it. I love vodka sauce and try to get a taste of it any time I have Italian, so I went for the vodka pasta and was very happy (the crispy prosciutto on top is an awesome touch). House wine was also very reasonably priced and our server, Tyler, was a gem -- my boyfriend accidentally knocked over his wine before really drinking any and after asking for help cleaning it up, he also very kindly brought him over another one, free of charge. We finished out our meal with the gelato sampler which was the perfect ending (you get to choose your two flavors -- raspberry + chocolate was a pretty winning combo for us). Decided to give this restaurant a try and what a find. When you walk up to this treasure on Main Street you are greeted by a crowd of patrons lining up to get a table. In most cases you would walk down the street figuring that you will never get in. Stay in line, get a pager and take a deep breath, get a drink in the crowded bar. This place is worth the wait. We were told that we would have to wait about A half hour at 6:30 on a Saturday night. We got drinks in the bar and bingo, our pager went off. We were ushered to our table in the busy dining room by a very courteous hostess. We then met our severs, who asked if we first timers. They were friendly and explained the menu, specials and gave us a minute since we already had drinks. One member of our group was just about finished with his drink and asked for another. She returned with it in what seemed to be 45 seconds. Their service is exceptional. We started with some of their small plates. The assortment is incredible. The star was their gnocchi! A delicious plate of fried potato ricotta gnocchi. Crisp, tender and a taste of potato that still haunts me. I should have taken an order home. An order of ricotta and honey comb with toasted baguette slices, was very nice. The polenta which was fried, was covered in a mushroom ragout. This dish was delicious and filling. The pork belly came with a nice salad. Our last dish was a 2 scallops with a tasty cauliflower purée. These dishes flew out of their kitchen and the servers presented the dishes with a noticeable pride as they set them down. Their house Chianti was excellent. We couldn't stop with the small plates, so we ordered some entrees. Two great pastas and a wood burning pizza. The pastas were exceptional but the pizza is a reason that I will return. I finally have found a place that actually delivers a totally crisp dough. Not just the edges, but all the way to the center.
