THE EXPERIENCE: Many of us can cook the same stuff here at home, so what I wanted for a *birthday* dinner was the EXPERIENCE, which this place really disappointed me with for our $111.00 tab. First, I called for a reservation and they were incredible; they asked what kind of seating I wanted (nice, but a red herring of what was to come) and I mentioned it was for a birthday. They said "Ok, a BOOTH is no problem and we'll offer your birthday guest a little treat." Cool! Upon arrival, I noticed that the local high school glee club is running the restaurant; everyone is maybe 18 years old or under. This place isn't the cheapest, so whatever, I guess...? My local Portillo's always screws up orders because they too hire high school students who enjoy 'chilling' more than 'working,' so yeah, cause and effects to come... We get seated... all the way in the back... in a corner... at a SMALL TABLE. (Ugh.) It has an AC vent blowing right onto our table and us. It was a warm day, so we're wearing summer clothes in what amounts to a freezer now and that's going to cool the food immediately. However, it's a birthday dinner, so now I can't complain and look picky. THANKS for the lousy not-what-I-requested seating, really appreciated! :-( Our waiter was great, but maybe ask if we WANT to hear the food and/or the wine specials... we were forced to hear both and it was seriously torturous and yeah, just ask if we are interested before the long speech. THE FOOD: *** Honeycomb & Ricotta: ORDER! ------------- It was delicious, but the lid on the dish they serve the ricotta in is so heavy, it falls all over the place - definitely needs to be rethought. *** Pork Belly: ORDER! ------------- Worth every penny. *** Scallops: Do NOT order! ------------- This was $18 and the biggest waste of money on scallops I've ever spent. Unlike the usual small scallops wrapped in bacon at other restaurants -- you know, where you get about 6 of them -- there were 3 (THREE!) small cheap scallops with some veggie mash. They were fine, but jeez, I could get like 25 of these for $18 at Mariano's, so way, way overpriced. *** Pasta, Vodka Cavatelli: ORDER! ------------- Great cream sauce, excellent overall. *** Pasta, Vodka Rigatoni: ORDER! ------------- Great cream sauce and good, ground sausage, excellent overall. *** Dessert, Chocolate Flourless Cake: NEUTRAL ------------- It's not what the name implies... it's a defrosted and baked molten lava cake from CostCo (probably, lol), which I love, but it's nothing custom or special as the name nearly implies. The vanilla ice cream was delicious with it, however. And there we go. We had to leave fast afterwards because we were friggin' freezing by the end. Also, THERE WAS NO BIRTHDAY TREAT, nothing. I shouldn't have come here and that was MY surprise, I guess. Meh. read more

Fabulous meal! Came here with family to celebrate my sister's birthday. We all had different food options-I had margarita pizza-daughter had mussels-there were burgers and pasta and the calamari was out of this world-fried to perfection. Zucchini fries were amazing as well as the bread-it had this spicy sauce on the side which I meant to ask about but it was SO good. Our server Josh was spot on and so attentive! Absolutely loved this place! My friends and I came here on a Saturday night while they were in town and we had such an amazing time. We started with the asiago stuffed gnocchi as a sharing plate (melt in your mouth good) then each got our own entree. I ordered the prosciutto + artichoke pizza and it was AMAZING. My first experience with Fire + Wine was excellent. I went with my parents who are regulars at the joint and holy cow the service was incredible! Drinks were ready when we got to our table and recommendations were great. Once seated we received our appetizers quickly and yes they were delicious. The crispy pork belly was like a bbq meat served with salad and the mussels were served in a lightly spicy garlic sauce. I ordered the margarita pizza and it was made with the best mozzarella I have ever had. If you're interested in artisan style dishes this place will be hard to beat. read more

We had a date night here that had been tradition the Saturday after thanksgiving. The place was very busy but the waitstaff and bartender super nice and friendly! We had to unfortunately leave early due to our 5 month old not being so well for our sitter and they immediately got our food to go and the waiter comforted our situation with the upmost manner I couldn't have imagined anything nicer. After a cold day of apple and pumpkin picking, we decide to drive back to Glen Ellyn early to grab a bite to eat. Of the two restaurants that were in consideration, Fire + Wine was the one that was opened, so we decided to try it! Ohh my goodness are were we happy about our choice! AMBIANCE: It's a very cozy and what seems to be a family owned restaurant. There's a small bar area in the front that doubles as the waiting area as well. Then three kinds of seating: high tables and chairs, booths, and regular tables. We opted for the booth for a cozier feeling. SERVICE: When we got there it was around 4:30PM so there was no wait, but come an hour later, it is hustling and bustling with families! The staffs' uniform each have a unique quote that makes waiting for the food a little bit more interesting, but the wait isn't too long! Since it was cold, we all asked for hot water and they didn't mind at all! Our food came out very quickly and timely, and our waiter was very attentive! Had it been later when we came in, we might've had to wait a bit longer, but the food is definitely worth the wait! FOOD: We hadn't had much to eat since the early morning, so we were definitely hungry. Four people, our waitress recommended 3 small plates and 2 bigger entrees to share. For our small plates we chose the Grilled Baby Octopus, Crispy Pork Belly, and Asiago Stuffed Gnocchi! The Grilled Baby Octopus was nicely seasoned with a spicy kick to it, which I loved! However, if you can't handle spicy at all, I'd recommend staying away from it or asking them to make it with less or no spice. The octopus wasn't overcooked and had just the right amount of chewiness! The Crispy Pork Belly literally melts as you cut it, and even faster when you eat it! The "crispy" part gives it a bit of texture to chew after it melted in your mouth! It was the perfect size for four people to get a taste of it and still have room for more! That is especially important because our crowd favorite was the Asiago Stuffed Gnocchi. I've never had gnocchi before, but if we didn't order two pizzas, we would've just ordered more of the gnocchi! That's saying a lot! It was like eating a smoother and creamier version of a hashbown! SO MUCH YES! For our entrees, we decided on 2 pizzas: the Mushroom & Kale and the Butcher's Block! Yes, we got two pizzas...gotta have both your veggies and your protein! Of the two pizzas, my favorite was the Butcher's Block because it had so much flavor but didn't overpower any of the ingredients! The Mushroom and Kale was also veryyy clean, and I love both mushrooms and kale, so you can't go wrong! The slices of parm on top made it have just the flavor you need for an extra cheesy taste! The only thing I have to say is that there was a raw/not thoroughly cooked mushroom on my slice of pizza. It might not do too much harm, but in some people it could have a bad reaction, so it doesn't hurt to leave the mushroom and kale pizza in for a bit longer. I'm not sure I'll add anything new, but wanted to make sure to recognize a great place! The decor over Christmas made it feel so cozy and the overall atmosphere is wonderful. Food was amazing. We had the octopus and the gnocchi, both perfect flavors and temperature. I'm pregnant and our server cautioned me about spice level which I appreciated it. We had a pizza and kale salad for dinner, both excellent. I love Neapolitan style pizza. We finished with 2 desserts, reminder I'm pregnant :) loved the donuts. Soooo good. Basically a funnel cake with amazing chocolate/honey sauce. We took them home knowing they wouldn't be as good, but if you put them back in a high heat oven they bounce back about 70%. So worth it. The chocolate cake was good too but overshadowed by the donuts. Service was perfect. Great night and can't wait to bring friends with us next time. read more

My inlaws brought me here while I was in town. It's their favorite restaurant and it didn't disappoint. Our waitress acted as a long time friend and was absolutely amazing. She even got my inlaws favorite appetizer ready before they ordered it we ate from all parts of the menu from appetizers to entrees, pizza, pasta, and then dessert all while enjoying their tasty wine menu. Amazing. Came here for my birthday on Tuesday to celebrate. I've been wanting to come here for awhile and figured it was the perfect opportunity. Called in at 5:30 for there program and said I would be in at 6:30. It worked perfectly, we showed up and sat down. Our server Heidi was fantastic. I told her I wanted a vodka drink to celebrate my awesomeness of being old and she hooked me up with a fantastic lemon ditty. Food. Lord. I can't even. I'll keep this as short as possible or i will go on and on and on. Ricotta, honeycomb ridiculous. I mean come on. This shit is so good it will make you cry. I'm salivating. Aranchini. Fried balls of cheesy rice goodness. Are you kidding me? And the onions on top? There's six. The less people there, the less you have to share. Black pepper shrimp. Delicious. Sauce was on point but it tasted slightly burnt. Will for sure try again. Meatballs. Lord. They're the good meatballs. The ones with love and meat. Sauce is amazing. Mussels were plentiful. I could eat toast points and this broth everyday. Kale salad for the vegan child. Filled with goodness. She devoured it. Quinoa and vegetables. The BF said vegetables shouldn't taste this good. Visited this place for the second time and I do love coming here. This restaurant does not take reservations so plan on a wait or go early to avoid the wait. It's a large restaurant, but very popular for its food and cocktails. We visited this restaurant last Friday and I had their signature cocktail which was a Patron Reposado. Amazing!! It was tequila, elderberry and grapefruit liquors with a salted and sugar rim. For my dinner I had the grilled romaine and the sea scallops small plate. My husband had the spaghetti and meatballs but the side house salad. His house salad was generous in portion and very fresh. He loved his spaghetti and meatballs. We have had their meatballs here before and they are so full of flavor and moist. Some of the best we've had. My grilled romaine salad had crispy leeks, pancetta, gorgonzola and a creamy parmesan dressing, which I had served on the side. I only used a teaspoon of the dressing as the salad was full of flavor on its own. My sea scallops was served with roasted cauliflower and brussels sprouts with capers and a red pepper coulis decorating the plate. I opted not to have the brown butter. I chose to have the larger plate for $18 rather than the smaller one and was very disappointed in the portion size for the amount of money. I had three scallops which I knew but very little cauliflower and brussels sprouts, just a tasting. Since I was having this for an entrée and ordered the larger size I thought it would at least have more vegetables on the plate with the scallops. It wasn't filling at all. Our server Kate was attentive and friendly and provided very good service. I would definitely recommend dining at this restaurant. We absolutely love this place. Amazing food, terrific drinks. The only reason for deducting a star is because unless you arrive right at opening, you will wait to be sat. Promise. And unfortunately, if the weather isn't nice and you have to wait inside the restaurant, there really isn't much room to stand anywhere; it's literally a galley of standees right behind the lucky ones who happened to snag a seat at the bar. The biggest reason for the wait is that they don't take reservations. They do offer call ahead seating, but I have found that this is not always accurate either, and we've still had to wait an additional 30 minutes after our original requested time. And if you don't do call ahead seating, be prepared to stand around and wait. Actually, you should be prepared to do that regardless. Anyway, food is super good. We've had many of the items on the menu. Our favorite app is the ricotta and honeycomb. The ricotta is so creamy and fresh, and the honey is top notch. Probably the best ricotta app I've had anywhere, honestly. We've also had the arancini mozzarella, which is literally an amazeball. What's not to like about a little fried cheese sphere? My hubby's go to is the crispy pork belly. Besides these plates, we've also had the sea scallops and cauliflower, and black pepper shrimp, which you could pass on (the scallops are tiny; the shrimp is over-doused in pepper- may as well bite into a pepper mill to save yourself the time). The eggplant lasagna is serviceable but is a little too breaded with not enough eggplant ratio if you ask me. The Roman chicken is delicious; not at all what I was expecting based on the menu description. It's really more of a chicken marsala-like dish, but instead of a chicken cutlet, it comes in 1/2 chicken form. Next time, I'll ask for the sauce on the side though. Dessert selection is okay. The last time we visited, they were offering a panna cotta and a budino. It's almost the same thing; I would like to see more variety in their dessert offerings, as their desserts are pretty good. For example, they offer a flourless chocolate cake, but no regular cake; why not? Or why no pie or cheesecake? Anyway, the tiramisu, and Nutella calzone and berries are the most popular dessert items, but they are ginormous, especially the calzone. Do not order the calzone unless you have at least four adults in your party. The last time we went, we had the butterscotch budino and they brought out a scoop of vanilla gelato with a candle for my son's birthday. I feel like the budino comes out in this sad looking water glass; the presentation is lacking and is not so conducive for sharing unless you're sharing with someone that is your family, significant other, etc. But the budino was very flavorful and just goes down so easily. We also had two glasses of red wine each when we last visited. I wish the wine was a little more chilled, although they have a vast selection. Every single one of the wines look so tasty. They usually have a bunch of drink specials as well, but I'm not big on hard alcohol. For those with kiddos, they do have a separate kids menu. My son has had their pizza which is super good. He's also had the meatball sliders which were not such a hit with him. If your child loves him/her a "regular" or "plain Jane" type of burger with a patty and cheese, this is not it. It's pretty nuevo for a kid because it's a less-eclectic version of the regular meatball slider app on the menu. So just be prepared. Do sign up for their emails. They will send you a coupon on your birthday month for $20 off of $60. It's really tough to find decent fare in the burbs, but this place is legit. And downtown Glen Ellyn is super cute to walk around while you're waiting for your table (because yes, you will be waiting, but it will be worth the wait!). read more

Started with 2 pizzas for apps ... never had soppresta on a pizza - incredible as was the margarita pizza. Perfect app for 6 people. For the main course, each of us selected a different dish then shared. Homemade rigatoni - best I have ever had, short braised ribs - melt in your mouth tenderness, shrimp and lobster combo - generous portions of shrimp and lobster, risotto - creamy texture with just the right amount of bite, and vegetable over risotto - farm fresh from the garden.
