The food quality at the Firebird is hit or miss. My wife and I went to try it after we moved to Essex Junction and I would have given the Firebird 5 stars hands down, we talked them up to all of our friends and got a group of 5 others to come with us for breakfast - what an absolute mistake. The food arrived and it was a very pale comparison of the first visit. It was as if the recipe completely changed - and/or they canned the good chef and got a high schooler to try and cook off the recipe book. We spent over 100+ dollars for breakfast and left with a very real bad taste in our mouth and a commitment to never visit this establishment again. I wish, sincerely wish that Firebird was as wonderful as our first visit, but as a business based on food products, consistency is key. What a complete disappointment. Do not waste your money here. Anyone looking to "try a new place", pass on by - there are tons of better quality establishments nearby. read more

Firebird is a nice little cafe situated in Essex that offers a good variety of breakfast (all day!) and lunch options. Their menu encompasses bold flavors and covers your every avocado craving. I enjoyed the huevos rancheros with an iced coffee (free refills). I was hoping for slightly more flavor and could have done with a little hot sauce on top of the dish, but the flavor combination was good. The avocado was perfectly ripe, tomato fresh, eggs cooked perfectly soft and the verde salsa brought a fresh and flavorful punch. I also appreciated the black beans in this dish rather than typical refried beans- it felt slight lighter but was PLENTY of food. Biggest downside was the lack of seating. My group of three ended up sharing a table with another couple- I felt bad to impose on their brunch out! I'd consider returning in the future! read more

This was a surprise hit! Facing a main street, this place offers all day breakfast/brunch and boy I've been looking for a spot that serves Eggs Benedict outside of the customary brunch days. They have indoor and outdoor seating which is great on sunny days. The staff was super friendly and welcoming! Here's what we ordered: -Chorizo Eggs Benedict: I love a dish that gives you different flavors yet they work together beautifully. The homemade chorizo was delicious and i only hoped there was more. The hollandaise sauce was incredible! -Supreme Burritto: It was huge with a delicious poblano sauce over it. Major winner here, top marks on the food, charm, and service. We showed up 15 min after it opened on a Sunday and there was only one other couple there. But by the time we left, the place was packed. Secret is out that this place is amazing. We ordered the pork carnitas omelette and the French toast. The pork carnitas were juicy, flavorful and not too salty. It was complemented nicely by the fresh tomato salsa and the sour cream. The home fries were also excellent. I chose the croissant bread for the French toast and added grilled banana and blueberries. It was light, airy and crispy around the edges. In addition to coffee they have a large selection of drinks including Boylan sodas and Diet Dr. Pepper so for me that pretty much earns them another star, but not like they needed it because it's a 5 star place. Service was great. Style is order at the counter then pick your seat and they bring it to you. They were friendly, pleasant and made just enough small talk to win me over. What a fantastic find! Mexican food and breakfast pair so well together, and this cafe does it so well. It caters to those that might want to sit in and eat, but those who want take out as well. I ordered the chorizo benedict with homefries (which were extra -- but it was not that much more, and well worth it). Very tasty and exactly what I wanted on a cold fall morning. Staff was friendly, and as I sat there and ate, they know their regulars well. I like when a place talks to their customers and created that relationship. I kept meaning to come here, and now my only regret is that we waited so long... It's a tiny little place--only 7 or 8 small tables of 2 or 4, and the menu is proprotionally small. But what they do they do real well. And it has a nice, homey feeling to it, like they know everyone who comes will eventually become a regular and a true friend. They provide a nice variety of magazines and a good collection of children's books for their smallest customers - very thoughtful, I thought. But let's talk about the amazingly delicious, fresh, well-priced food. The pork carnitas omelet (8.25) was just an amazing blend of flavors that you do not usually enjoy for breakfast, but here, it all made sense. The generous amount of pork was neither too sweet nor too salty, letting the porkinesss shine through. The tomatillo sauce was a solid, fresh compliment without being obtrusive, and there was just enough avocado and cheese to round things out with creaminess and salty-cheese goodness. It came with just a few home fries, but it was just the right amount, and cooked the way I like them (but can rarely get them!): crisp and lightly browned on the outside, lightly spiced, but nice and potato-ey, not dry at all. I love having desert after breakfast, and here we ordered the real maple syrup accompanied by croissant French toast ($6.95). O. M. G. The maple syrup was stronger and more complex than your average grocery-store variety -- this is the good stuff, what Vermont is known for. And the French toast itself...man! The perfect texture -- a little custardy, a little eggy (but not too much), barely crisp on the edges -- and with a hint of its own sweetness. Just about the best French toast I've ever had, My daughter loved her huevos rancheros ($8.25) but could not finish the huge portion. Her friend polished off the traditional -- 2 eggs, bacon, homefries, and toast for a rockin' $4.95. I think this may replace Chef's Corner as our go-to Sunday brunch... Mediocre food, terrible service. Me and my family ordered a total of four items; two burritos and two sandwiches. There was only one other table there, and it took over 40 minutes to get the food. It was so long that we had to ask for it to go mid way through because we were sitting down, and there was no way it would take that long, right? I got the pork burrito, and it was fine, I guess. The avocados muted the other flavors in the burrito, making it taste strange, and the rice was not seasoned very well. The place looks like a factory, with the floors being stone gray. I LOVED this restaurant! We visited from New Jersey and after our first breakfast at the Firebird we decided to go back for lunch the next day. I had the most delicious version of eggs Benedict with a southwestern/Mexican twist. Everything was cooked perfectly and the sauces were bright and fresh. My daughter had the buttermilk pancakes which were the best I have tasted. The next day we tried the taco's; fish and pork. Apparently they are famous for the fish tacos and after tasting them I know why. The staff was friendly and helpful. Great coffee drinks and cozy but small seating area. The food was good but they apparently don't know how to make migas It came deconstructed on my plate instead of all together. The gem of authentic Migas is the corn tortillas torn up and fried and salty as a base. They just folded some cold tortillas and put them on the side. I went there for breakfast this morning as I was looking for a place while I was getting my snow tires replaces. Had absolutely no expectations but asked for a tofu breakfast burrito, the first thing that caught my attention was the sauce on top - looked like one of the famous traditional mexican sauces that I had only seen before when learning mexican cooking from a chef that had a cooking school in mexico. Stopped in for lunch around 10am and they were very busy with to go orders and a few diners. They warned us when ordering our food that it would take about 20 minutes wait which was not a problem. Ordered the giant breakfast burrito and it was delicious. It came with a mild and Smokey sauce on the tortilla and included avocado inside. I also tried some of the hot sauce at the table and it was delicious on both the burrito and the accompanying potatoes, which were also well prepared and cooked. My wife had the short stack of chocolate chip pancakes and it was more than enough to feed her while being delicious. The only reason i camt give this place 5 stars is that the atmosphere inside is tight quarters and unfortunately with how busy it was the tables weren't super clean, but this place isn't trying to put on airs - just make great food. It will definitely be on my short list for local breakfast places but like others I will probably order to go. read more

This place serves a decent breakfast if you are willing to pay more than 10 dollars for most options. A few things were a bit off. It took them about 45 minutes to make our breakfast. That seemed a little strange for a very small and not crowded establishment. We arrived in the first hour that they opened and had to be at our next activity soon thereafter, so we rushed to eat. Also, be warned, that they do not serve decaf coffee (but kindly directed us to fetch some at a nearby establishment...). The huevos rancheros were seasoned pretty well but be sure to let the server know how runny (or not!) you want your eggs. I left that detail out and enjoyed them less than I should have. Also, the one extremely disappointing thing as someone that loves/CRAVES spice is that the cafe was "totally out" of hot sauce. I'm sorry - but that is unacceptable. Here is some advice to the owner. Please take 15 minutes to drive to a grocery store and buy some hot sauce some if you cannot find the time to make your own. It is key for an establishment that serves eggs/omelettes and tasty appearing sandwiches, burritos. The pancakes were pretty good. I will not rush back but would be willing to try it again at some point in the future. read more

Lunch at Firebird always makes my day. The owner is always there, cooking and taking orders. Everything is fresh, made to order, and the sauces seem to all mostly be made in house. There are usually only a couple of others working in the open kitchen, all very friendly. Even though it's an order at the counter and take your number kind of place, someone always carries your food to your table and comes around to make sure everything is good. I've tried a lot of things on the menu and have never been disappointed. The burritos are great, but I often get the wraps because they're just easy to take back to the office. My absolute favorite so far is the Apollo (grilled chicken with roasted red pepper, cilantro, avocado, and chipotle mayo), but I have loved every one I've tried. read more
