I remember coming here maybe 4 years ago when I lived in the area and my husband, friend, and I always thought it was great. The pies were good and so were the sandwiches. We moved back and stopped by tonight, and it wasn't the same. My friend got a pie and that was good, but this rice bowl looked mediocre. The nachos were a bit sad, not a lot of meat but oh so many tomatoes and onions on top. A bit over the top I might add. When we got the bill and noticed the Calzone was almost $20 I was a bit surprised. The menu says 9.99 and then toppings and said 12" 2.15 , 18" 2.65 ... now it seems as if they charged him 2.15 for each topping, and that's a bit excessive to me at least, and if it had said as such, he wouldn't have gotten so many. I think the menu needs to be a bit more clearer in that regard. Other then that one of the waitresses was really nice! read more

The highly anticipated opening of a new restaurant in Gales Ferry was very much a hot topic in the area. Just opened earlier this week I thought I would swing by and see what they have to offer. This restaurant is either dine-in or take-out only, no delivery service at this time. Pizza sizes are either 12" or 18". When you walk in, the dining area is very open with two brick ovens on the left where you can watch the cooks cook the food. Considering that this is a VERY newly opened establishment there weren't many decorations but I suspect that there will be more as time passes. The waitress that had waited on us was friendly and she checked on us often. We ordered the 12" Old Faithful pie $8.99 with pepperoni + $1.50 with three drinks coke and raspberry iced tea) @ $2.50 each and comes with bottomless refills. Total bill: $19.07. They also offer beer but it is not indicated on their menu. We watched our pizza pie (hand tossed, thin crust) being made in front of us since the preparation area is in the front of the house rather than the back. With all of the orders coming in, it took about 15-20 minutes for our pizza to make it to our table. The pizza was delicious and was crunchy and soft in all the right places. The pepperoni wasn't overpowering at all and was mild (at least to me). The mix of of the tomato sauce, cheese and pepperoni was the right amount for a wood fired pizza. The only thing that I would have liked to taste more of is the smokiness from the wood fire. From what I saw, there was only the one fire going in the back of the oven which only provides the heat and not the smokey flavoring. They also offer pizza by the slice, which is located right next to the register as you walk in - cost is unknown. Appetizers include Mozzerella bites, garlic bread, loaded backed potato Pop-a-tini, buffalo wings, bruscetta and quesadillas. There are salads, sandwiches, burgers, rice bowls and desserts (made daily) which is listed on their menu. Take note, if you have children they do not have any juice or children's cups yet. All in all it was a nice experience and the pizza is delicious. This will be an establishment that I will be frequenting in the future. read more

My daughter and I had a meal with rotten cheese here. After calling the owner over after one bite, she proceeded to tell us it was fine, that they just didn't heat it properly. (So cold, rotten manicotti.) She made us pay for it, then actually packed it for us to take home! Then told us to microwave it when we got home. We left it sitting on the table. We have never and will never go back! She has a real attitude problem, and serves tainted food. Note a review further down where another customer complained of spoiled filling. I don't often review after just one time at a place, but I really enjoyed the food and chat with the owner/cook. She buys a really superior gluten free pizza crust and creates interesting combinations of toppings- with lots of choices to add or build your own. Of the six of us, two of us were very satisfied pizza eaters, with leftovers for later. Two were very happy with their burgers ( they looked so large!) and fries. One had a yummy sandwich and one had the chef's very creative "French roll". Very much like a crepe, with amazing filling choices, it came with soup or salad. Since it was new to the menu, the owner/chef came over to ask my friend what she thought. She was also very agreeable about talking to me about her gf crust. Our server was smiley and efficient. Bathroom was clean and large (one seater). Prices were reasonable and appropriate for the value. I'll look forward to using the lunch club card we were all given when I come back! read more

First off, let me start by saying I haven't had pizza in three years. Why you ask? Because I've been a health freak doing that whole low carb thing. But now I'm pregnant and had a serious hankering for some pizza. We live up the road from fireside and never gave it a second glance mainly because of my diet but also because it never seemed busy... And I am completely and utterly perplexed as to why. Today for the game my s/o and I decided to order a large Zion and an order of orange Thai chili wings. The wings were fantastic and the pizza....I could go on forever but I'll try and keep it short. Light airy but crispy crust. Chicken, bacon, spinach, tomato, onion, Gorgonzola and garlic dressing. Drool worthy. And in the words of my pizza snob boyfriend, "this is so good and I don't feel like an asshole after eating this. It's like healthy pizza!" What he is saying in layman's terms is there is minimal grease to this pizza and a ton of clearly fresh ingredients. My only reason for knocking it down a star is because I was told it would be ready in 15 and I left ten minutes after ending the phone call (I live 7 minutes away) and when I got there my pizza was just going into the oven and the wings into the fryer. On the bright side they were hot and I'm patient. On the downside, if I was in a rush or not patient I wouldn't have been pleased. Regardless, we will be back. Most definitely. read more

The pizza is okay. But we go for the rice bowls. We can't get enough of them. My son always gets the taco bowl, my husband and I get the teriyaki beef. So freaking good. Shaved beef, pineapple, rice and smothered in teriyaki sauce(the nice, thick kind). We could eat them every day. read more

Tried to give this place one more shot, but never again. Ordered 3 calzones and they were between 12-14.00 ea. For one they were the smallest calzones I have ever seen...maybe 4 in long. The pepperoni eggplant had one slice off eggplant and two small slices of pepperoni. There was maybe a tablespoon of ricotta at best. It was mostly dough. All three were completely lacking. Thinnest ones too...the side of sauce was straight from fridge. Cold sauce??? Tasted like ragu.. very sweet. I ordered chic tenders meal and there were maybe three french fries. The only one who didn't complain was the 9 yr old who ordered fried motz. The sauce tastes like the sauce from luncheables so he didn't mind. The bill came to 65.00. Could not believe it. Fyi....ordered a calzone for same price at maravehellos in Oakdale and it was 3-4 times it's size. So disappointing!!!! read more

Sadly, we will not eat here again. We had two sandwiches, with fireside bread and sweet potato fries. The total bill was 27.00. For two small sandwiches. The wait was 45 minutes, for take out. I had to call back and ask how it was so expensive, because we would never pay 11.00 for any sandwich, let alone without a side. The person who answered really didn't seem enthused to explain it, because she probably hears it from everyone. We would not have bought the sandwiches at all if we were given a total over the phone. Just when i hought about giving this place a try, I read about how this owner treats not only her customers, but her staff as well. From insults to her workers in front of customers, blatantly IGNORING customers during down times, placing calls to the police over patrons not wanting to pay for food the day AFTER it was delivered, all the way up to failing to take responsibility for undercooked chicken (and calling the cops over the refusal of that being paid as well). The sheer disregard this woman has towards business etiquette is outstanding. I will be avoiding this place at all costs and telling my friends and family to as well There are far better pizza places in the area. DONT GO HERE. read more

Today was the saddest day in salad and pizza history. It's sad when dominos actually looks like a good option. $8 for a side salad which contained 3 whole leaves of lettuce, one cubed mushroom, and 2 slices of onions. The pizza was cold as if it just came out of the refrigerator. For an $18 pizza with sausage, bacon and pepperoni; only one slice of pepperoni per slice. I guess I'll find the bacon when I go to a dinner some time. It's my third horrible experience there. 3 strikes and this place is out. To finish their coffin, the lady who answered the phone when called back was so rude it's unimaginable. Save your palate and go to New Haven. Or a bit closer, Valentino's is banging, just saying. Today (9/18) at about 2:30 pm my girlfriend came to FBO. My girlfriend has a dairy sensitivity. Before we even were seated we asked if the bread used to make the flat breads and the fireside bread had dairy in them. The only server on at the time went into the back to confirm. She came back and told us we were good, no dairy. So we seated ourselves. We made our selections. I, with out the dairy restrictions, opted for the El Capitain on 1/2 flat. My girlfriend with the sensitivity ordered the gates of the arctic, no provolone, and no mango chutney (because we inquired about that too to find that had dairy in it as well.) We then reminded the server that there was a dairy sensitivity. The server took off with our order, and returned about 15 minutes later with our food. She put a sandwich in front of my girlfriend, on the fireside bread, and a sandwich in front of me, on the 1/2 flat. We began eating. about half way through her sandwich, my girlfriend arrived at an very large helping of gorgonzola in her sandwich. She took the sandwich apart and noticed the not only was there gorgonzola on it, but there was a creamy sauce on it. We called the server over and asked what happened. she looked at the sandwiches and said what she had in front of her was an El Captain with gorgonzola (dairy) and the garlic cream sauce (more dairy), and I had the wrong sandwich in front of me as well. The breads were correct. So I don't know where things went wrong. The server probably went by the breads and knew the 1/2 flat was supposed to come to me, and the fireside bread her, but it was ALL WRONG. Either she rang it in wrong, or they were made in the kitchen backwards. Needless to say, this is a HUGE issue. It ruined the rest of the day of plans we had, not to mention the rest of the weekend and likely into the week causing a loss of wages. The Kicker. The server made absolutely NO apologies for the errors of the restaurant and offered no reduction in our bill AT ALL. So we paid full price for food that was completely wrong and is causing health issues... and then she had the audacity to wish has a 'great afternoon' on our way out the door. This is completely unacceptable and I will not stop at this feedback page on your website telling others about the horrible mix up on food despite NUMEROUS reminders that there was a dairy sensitivity, and the completely inappropriate way this was handled afterwards. We will NEVER be back and I will spread the word long and far about this, trust me. Here I was hoping this place had turned over a new leaf after Stephanie was out of the picture. I was pleasantly surprised by this place. Stopped by on my way up from NYC to mohegan sun. Their beer prices are so reasonable. I loved the pumpkin cider they had. Specialty wings of cinnamon cayenne were a perfect balance of flavor. Could have been a tad more crispy but I really enjoyed them regardless. Gluten free pizza is solid. It's not the best crust I have had but the toppings and sauce are flavorful and made the pizza very enjoyable. Service is great and overall I was very happy with my experience. Thank you! read more

First, let me say I have been a fan of Fireside for years. Even with the change in ownership, the food is still great, and I have no complaints about the food, hence, my rating did not drop that much. However, we have noticed that for the past year, every time we visit, it seems like the price goes up and up and up. What I paid for a small pizza the other night was very close to what a large of the same pizza used to cost. Unfortunately, Fireside is no longer an economical option to feed a family compared to other local pizza places. I understand that times are tough for small businesses, but they are also tough on the customers, and it's frustrating to have the prices constantly raise, and not just a little bit. It's pizza. It isn't supposed to cost an arm and a leg. While we may come here occasionally as a treat, we probably will not be coming here as regularly as we did. read more

This mom & pop place is awesome! We've been here a few times but not recently, so we were excited to eat dinner on June 28th 2018. The restaurant was completely short staffed. When we walked in, there were 3 employees! This, however, did not impact our service. They greeted us as we walked in & constantly checked on us to make sure we had everything we needed. The owner's father waited on us & was such a joy! He was witty & super accommodating. The food is always amazing, even with a skeleton crew. The owner came over to apologize for our wait midway through our dinner, which was a sweet touch. We didn't mind the wait one bit, they keep our drinks filled & the owner's dad kept us laughing. 5 star service! read more

I had the beef teriyaki rice bowl here before but I guess I forgot how small it is for the price. For over $9 after tax, there wasn't enough rice to cover the bottom of the container. Did I miss something? Is this bowl an appetizer? There wasn't enough food for a 10 yr old. The teriyaki favor is good but the rice was under cooked and hard. Fireside is our go-to pizza place; we love their thin crust, fire-baked pizzas! We most often get the Old Faithful, which is plain cheese, but we've never had anything we didn't like. The Denali (double thick crust, sausage, pepperoni & ricotta cheese) and the Zion (Chicken, spinach, tomato, onion, gorgonzola, bacon & creamy garlic) are other favorites! They also always have some fun specials! We've tried other Ledyard/Groton pizza spots, and this place is the only one we've returned to. read more

My second time to Fireside was tonight. Had this been my first time, I'd 100% never eat there again and encourage my friends to do the same. My husband ran in and placed an order for a Mt. Rainer, calzone, and kid's pizza. He was told it would be 15-20 minutes. He came back out to the car where our daughter and I were killing time waiting for the pizza to be ready. He popped his head in several times and was told it wasn't ready. He placed the order at 6:14pm. At 6:45 he went in to check on the food again. The pizzas were ready and his calzone was just THEN being put into the oven. He asked why it had taken so long and that he was told it was going to be 15-20 minutes. He was told "because there are a lot of toppings on the calzone. Seriously? That was all they said. No apology for the long wait or anything. Finally, our food was ready at 6:51. 37 minutes later. The pizzas were cold and uncut when we got home, just a couple of minutes away from the restaurant. What I think was the worst part was the horrible service and "I don't care" attitude from the staff. It was quite disgusting. Our first time here we enjoyed several pizzas with friends of ours and had a decent time. Yes, they only have 2 high chairs in the entire restaurant (leaving all of our very small kiddos to sit on our laps) and the service wasn't anything to write home about but at least the pizza was good and hot. Tonight the food was mediocre and the service was horrible. No real reason to ever return here. We're new-ish to the area and LOVE a good pizza place... will be on the look out for one for sure, just not this one. read more

Worst Caesar Salad ever made, it was lettuce with burnt croutons. The pizza was marginal at best. Brick oven does NOT equal burnt crust everywhere. Learn to use that brick oven and you may have more business. Don't waste your time or money! read more

My. Wife and I were down in the area from NH to go to the mystic aquarium and also the submarine museum. We found fireside and thought we would give it a try. We both ordered 1/4 size sandwiches which were on flatbread. Excellent to say the least, portions were good and filling and full of flavor. Service was excellent and we even met the owner. Great people, great service and great food. We plan on coming down again really soon and we will definitely stop by for another round of sandwiches or maybe even try the pizza read more

We have eaten at this establishment a few times. We have not been disappointed. The food is always great! Stephanie, the owner, makes all her own bread and pizza dough. Had the shredded pork sandwich on a homemade roll that was superb. We finally tried one of her pizzas. It had bleu cheese, spinach tomato and bacon. Fantastic flavor! I gave this place not 1, not 2, not 3 but 11 tries to get my orders correct and they failed every single time. My husband and I have a tradition of Friday night take-out. The pizza here was great the first time we went. Every time since then the pizza has been undercooked, very doughy. The flat bread sandwichs are also great but, cost $11.00 and there is $1.50 up-charge for fries! They only serve 15 small skinny fries (yes I counted) Every time we ordered something, there was a mistake or they forgot to give us the whole order. I do like the food but, after our last experience when I had to drive back to this place three times to get the order right I won't be going back there again. read more

Went to the Fireside for lunch, we heard it was good and now under new management. We sat down for lunch no one was there. I ordered a diet Pepsi while we looked at the menu. I am on a special diet (low sodium) which there was nothing on the menu I could eat. Asked if they could make something, like plain chicken but everything is preseasoned. Ate here twice. Usually have a Love Salad a la old Hughies style in New London. Also have tried pizza. All seem good and tasty. Pizza is thin crust variety with just enough cheese and fresh toppings to rate high on the YUM factor not the thick glops of cheese other pizza's use. Worth the visit and GF is happy to have some good food. read more

We moved to the area about a year ago. In that time, we have tried a lot of pizza, by far, Fireside has been the best. We had the Old Faithful and the Rocky Mountain. The crust was perfect and the vegetables were fresh. We will definitely be going back. read more
