SO tired of the abundant chain restaurants in the Oswego area. In addition, the sad attempt at American fare by various eateries in the Yorkville area left me hesitant to visit Fireside Grille in Sugar Grove. Thank my hungry, noontime belly that I did! SOLID: I usually judge a place by it's Reuben (especially if I'm there for lunch) and this one did not disappoint. Great flavor on marble rye (like it should be) with the thick, 1000 Island dressing on the side. My wife ordered the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich which was well presented and had a solid Buffalo sauce! BEST PART: My favorite by far, however, were the Black & Bleu Steak Bites (appetizer, $10, see uploaded picture). I'm a HUGE fan of blackening spice (please temper my strong support with that knowledge), but this was a home run for me. I would have been happy to just order this and a small salad and a glass of vino. Could have sucked up the cajun cabernet sauce with a straw. DRAWBACKS: Kid's meals were typical as were the fries. Don't get me wrong, they were tasty and the ranch dressing I dipped in was delish, but if they had the crunchy outside similar to the Millhurst Ale House in Yorkville, I'd probably have eaten 'em all. I also was sad to see that they simply took the chicken strips from my son's meal and coated 'em in Buffalo Sauce for my wife's Buffalo Chicken Sandwich. On one hand I felt that was weak...but then again, it was a crazy tasty sandwich! Mixed on that level. In summary, I'd say that the Fireside Grille will be in the rotation for my family from this point out. God knows we can drop $40-50 at a Red Robin, but based off my initial experience I'd much rather have the non-chain + depth of menu at the Fireside Grille. Cheers to the owners, chefs, and waitstaff. I have never had a bad appetizer, meal or drink at the Fireside Grill. I personally love their calamari. The Reuben sandwich is to die for. The house dressing is scrumptious on salads. Our first visit with 9 family members. Good atmosphere, excellent service, ginormous portions. Everyone said they enjoyed the food except for the meat loaf. It had a different flavor like it wasn't made with beef. It came with mashed potatoes but no gravy on the meat or potatoes which was basically our only complaint. This is a very friendly, well run restaurant. We were seated quickly and our server was efficient and friendly. All of our meals were very tasty and I was surprised at how large the portions are. Plus the meals included bread and soup or salad and some entrees came with a starch. You don't see that very often anymore. We all took food home and I'm sure that I'll have at least 2 more meals out of the Mediterranean Pasta. Will definitely be coming back to try something else from their extensive menu. read more

The food was good and I had no issues with it. My server Kim was a different story. First, she forgets the soup I order. This was the conversation we had, can I get a cup of the French onion soup. Her response was you want a cup and not a bowl baked with cheese. I reply no just a cup of the soup please. When I had to tell the hostess that we like to see our server she came by and I explained to her that I was missing my soup and my bacon on my hamburger. Instead of just saying sorry and getting it, she goes and gets her order pad and response that the kitchen messed up as she wrote bacon on the order but didn't hear me order the soup (when she asked me about betting it baked). Second problem, the kitchen staff brings out our food and places by our table but no waitress to be found. We patiently wait and good 5 minutes goes by and she is no where to be found, so we decided to just serve ourselves the food. The other server who is taking care of the tables by ours takes the tray away afterwards. The other server visited her tables 4 times to ask bout drink refills, served the food, asked if they needed anything, came by to ask if they wanted a container. Our server, no where to be found. Had to go tell hostess we like to see our server. She then comes by and that's when we tell her about the missing items. Our drinks are empty but doesn't ask for refills. Had to tell her we wanted a container. I still gave her a 10 percent tip, but felt like I got robbed giving her that. Wish our server was the other lady who was doing an outstanding job. read more

We had a small family reunion on Sunday, August 13th and there were 16 guests. Our server was Connie J. and she did a fabulous job taking care of everyone. There was something on the menu for everyone. The prices were fair and the food was delicious. Most everyone was taking home some for another meal. I had the prime rib however really regret not trying one of the pasta dishes others in my group got. So let me start with this place is kind of back behind building so it was a little hard to find. The gps said "you have arrived!" and we were at a little motel....... Just keep driving past the motel it is there just further back. If you are going with a large group on a weekend make a reservation. We luckily did think to make one so we had no issue but they were very, very busy on the Saturday night we went. All of the staff was amazing! Our server was sweet and very good at her job even with us having a few odd requests, nothing we asked threw her off her game. The table got bread and whipped butter as our drinks came out and it was warm and yummy. We did try two cocktails there was a limoncello martini and a caramel apple martini, both we will order again when we come back, and we will be back. A few of us tried the baked French onion soup and to say we were impressed is an understatement. It was very rich and had the perfect amount of cheese melted perfectly. Everything we ordered was loved by everyone and I do not remember everything so here is what I do remember. The steak house salad was loved, 2 of us ordered it and both were very happy with it. Both steaks were cooked perfectly and the one person had the poppy seed dressing and that was delicious. We had 2 people order the prime rib and they were both thrilled. One of the older kids ordered the fries shrimp dinner and almost ate it all, the other older kid had a 12 oz steak and it was cooked perfectly and she said it was perfect. I had the steak house pasta and omg it was amazing. The steak like every other dish was cooked perfectly and the pasta and sauce were delicious. I will say this about every dish we ordered, each items serving size was huge! The pasta I took home enough for two more meals after I was full. Everyone had such a great time that as we were in the parking lot my husband started talking about what he saw being served to other tables and what we should try next time we come. Today i ordered The Reuben with French Fries , Saganaki, and an order of buffalo wings. Total price $29.13 Lets start with The Reuben. Creating a Reubens is truly and art form. If you cant deliver quality and taste do not under any circumstance sell a Reuben. Heavily melted swiss cheese over a nice thick cut of Corned Beef and Sour Kraut. Flavor was there however visual was not. Quite frankly it looked sloppily put together. Unfortunately the Reuben collapsed on me as i picked up the first half but that was due to the steam softening the bread. However i do give them credit for its taste. Fries were unsalted but medium cut. I really do prefer salt already added to my Fries but alot of places have been not adding them lately because people prefer different amounts. Next time please add some salt. Now the Buffalo Chicken were big but flavor was not there to be completely honest. For $6.99 you do get a hefty amount. The sauce wasn't quite there nor was the chicken. Soft and mushy drenched in sauce. I may be back for the Saganaki but not for the Reuben or Chicken. read more

I give the food 5 stars. The waiter seemed to have a problem with us from the first sentence. I didn't know until later in the evening but he made a rude comment to my son. My son asked what the fish of the day was and he said, "The fish of the gay is, I mean, ha ha ha, the fish of the day is grouper." My wife specifically asked if the spinach was fresh frozen or canned. He swore it was fresh. When she received her meal we found it was in fact canned spinach. I've been eating spinach my whole life and have friends who own restaurants. It was definitely from a can. When we brought it up he argued with us l, then brought out sauteed fresh baby spinach that looked absolutely nothing like what she scraped off of her chicken. I'm not sure why but he was passively rude to us the entire meal. The flavor of our food, except for the spinach, was EXCELLENT! Just don't get this waiter on a bad night. read more

We have driven by sooooooooooooo many times and finally had an opportunity to stop for dinner. There are booths when you enter, a bar area with some high top tables, but on a cold winter's night, the top spot is the room with tables near the fireplace. There was also a room to the left of the hostess stand that can probably be used for larger parties or private parties. They were previewing a new soup: smoked bacon, turkey, vegetable corn chowder. It had everything, was served hot, and was deeeeeeeeeeeeeeelicious. I asked if it might become part of a regular rotation of soup, I would come back for that. The Tuesday night special was BBQ ribs, but we were in a hurry, so we just ordered cheeseburgers. They were juicy, cooked to perfection, served with very good cole slaw, nicely cooked French fries,and a pickle. I would definitely return to try some of the other selections and, if it were a Tuesday, the ribs, you could smell them and they smelled wonderful. Fair pricing and it must have regulars and draws the locals. Parking is the down fall. You enter the parking area driving past a very seedy motel. Entrance is one way and the only exit is behind the restaurant and out onto a street. Take note of that, especially at night and especially if it is your first visit. This is a hoppin' place with great service and tasty food. You wouldn't expect to find a place like this in remote Sugar Grove, IL, but it's there. This is my third visit, and the best one yet. Don't judge a book by it's cover. The building exterior is plain and deceiving, but inside, it is cozy and welcoming. The fireplace in the main seating area is definitely a focal point. The bar area is separated from the main seating areas by windows, which creates a more open concept, but keeps the noise level down from the bar to the main dining area. They also have a more private dining room, which can accommodate larger parties. Our server was friendly, on time, and always one step ahead of us with drink refills. She anticipated everything we might need and had it at the table before we needed to ask. The menu is full of variety so there is something for everyone. Steak, seafood, salad, sandwiches, pasta. . .all very good. To start, they bring the table a loaf of bread, served warm with whipped butter. For my entree, I had the Steak Bite Pasta - steak medallions covered with blue cheese, and served over linguine tossed with mushrooms and asparagus in a Cajun spicy sauce. It is definitely different and very tasty. My companions enjoyed their meals - Fried Gulf Shrimp and Petite Filet. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE that they have a dessert tray so you can see the desserts before you order them. The dessert portions are HUGE, so we shared a slice of Carrot Cake. This was one of the best Carrot Cakes I have ever had - moist, chunky, and just the right amount of cream cheese frosting. Pricing is on the upper end for items like steak and seafood, so your bill will be on the high side if you choose those from the menu, but there are less expensive choices on the menu that are just as tasty. The only complaints we had were minor - the steamed vegetables accompanying the meals were overdone. And forgive me for actually complaining about too much chocolate. . . but the dessert menu was heavy with chocolate cakes or really rich, heavy desserts. I would like to see lighter, fruity or tangy options like key lime pie or berries and cream.
