FIRESIDE... Was strolling down a busy Portland thoroughfare deciding on which place to get a beer from... Having gone to college in the Pacific Northwest I know that the PNW is a metropolis of craft beer!!! Definitely needed to get my NW beer fix in on this short trip! =) Said a little prayer as I walking that God would lead me to the perfect place for the perfect beer and He Delivered!!! Well the sinage on the outside just drew me in with loving arms!! "LOVE IS STRONGER THAN ANYTHING IN ITS WAY" YES!!! :)) Had a late dinner to attend later so I just wanted a beer and a small snack and that's just what I got! ROYALE BREWING COMPANY PILSNER (brewed in Portland) -- ONE OF BEST BEERS I HAVE EVER HAD!!! Pilsners are my FAV beer class and this was PILSNER PERFECTION!!! Oh Lord, if we could only have this back home!! My fridge would be stocked with this beer alone!! =) A must-try when in Oregon!! This was on draft -- yaaasss!! Akela was a lovely host for our recent dinner! Sweet and prompt service with a smile, nothing better than that! We enjoyed the espresso stout and wine selection very much. The cheddar and pickled pepper burger with bacon was salty but good. Cooked to perfection and presentation was nice. Brick chicken was perfect in the beginning but a little salty. Very fresh and delicious with a nice little kick. Paper straws aren't my fave but saving the environment is definitely my favorite. Off the Happy Hour menu, we got the Fried Cauliflower and French Dip which was just the right amount to curb the hangry. I love me some grilled cauliflower, and the serving was tasty though I find it interesting that health conscious Portland is frying up cauliflower. Great to share. The Fireside is a Portland landmark at this point! In the heart of NW 23rd it is the perfect spot to bring out of town guests or as a romantic date night spot. I have frequented it for family dinners, birthdays, and girls nights. The food is hands down phenomenal. The drinks are creative and spectacular. The vibes are immaculate. Google says they're open until 10pm, their website said 9 pm, but when we walked up, there was a note that said they closed at 8pm. I know staffing issues exist but need to find a time that works and then make it consistent across everything. All of the staff was welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable... even though it was insanely busy. We never felt rushed or a bother, all the staff gave us incredible service. And I can't even begin to tell you how good the food and wine was. It was my single greatest dining experience in Portland to date. We had fish and chips, and steak. Both: perfect. The positives first... really fancy and aesthetically pleasing restaurant. It's very upscale feeling, while also being approachable. Nice mood lighting. The servers were extremely friendly. I'd say 10/10 on those things! But at the end of the day it's a restaurant... The negatives: They could really use a few more items on their menu. They only have appetizers and a burger, that are in the 15-20 dollar range. Then everything on their menu, and i mean everything jumps up to $43 or more. The menu was small and would be great to have a few more options. I wasn't really wanting to spend that kind of money that night, so went with the burger. I asked for medium rare. Burger came back and was kind of raw (I don't mind that too much), but the biggest issue was that everything on the burger was totally cold. The bun was cold and not toasted at all, the cheese wasn't fully melted, and the burger itself was completely cold. The fries tasted really low quality. Honestly, it wasn't good at all. I told the waiter and he was superrrrr great about it, sent it back and brought a brand new one. Once again the bun wasn't toasted that much, but at least the burger was hot this time. Still, i'd say that i've had better burgers at Five guys than this, and just honestly expected way better tasting ingredients then what they served me. The bun was low quality, the cheese was low quality, the fries, kind of everything about it. Can't speak to the other food there, but they could really use some help with the burgers. This is more like a 3.5 rating for me. So the place is lovely. Wonderful airy, lots of light and natural wood, cool wall art and custom bar area and a lovely fireplace up front. We came in at an odd hour and were limited to the happy hour menu so I need to provide that caveat. The craft cocktails, tasty indeed but something about those old school champagne glasses that are supposed to be the size of Marie Antoinette's breasts, is so disappointing becomes they are like an A cup size. Three sips and your done. This was happy hour and those sips were still $7, not great. The food was disappointing mostly because of the way it was described compared to what actually arrived at the table. Brussel sprouts were a little sweet, burger was over cooked and bland, grilled romaine was lacking zest and harissa beet chips had no harissa - which was the main reason i ordered them. Everything sounded amazingly flavorful - I'd go for harissa in anything, but in reality everything tasted bland. I appreciate the effort and creativity, perhaps we will give it another try at brunch but don't get me all excited about harissa on my beers and then leave me hanging..... read more

Wow. What a great place for brunch! This is the first brunch place my wife and I visited when we visited Portland and we weren't disappointed. I got the salmon eggs Benedict (), my wife got an order of Meat and Eggs, and we shared a half avocado and latte. Everything was delicious and fresh. High quality food and high quality service as well! This past weekend, some girlfriends and I came here for brunch. Adorable spot with indoor and outdoor seating. I ordered eggs benedict with bacon and avocado.. holy moly was it delicious! Hollandaise wasn't too overpowering (I recommend getting it on the side) and it came with a crispy hash brown cake. Although I am watching my carbs, I couldn't resist eating every last bite of my meal! My meal companions ordered the veggie hash and eggs/bacon/toast and they enjoyed their meals as well. No leftovers at this table! Another detail to note is that they actually offer FRESH SQUEEZED OJ! In my experience this is difficult to find outside of Florida but amazing when you actually find someplace that offers it. Lastly, this place is right next to my favorite boutique, Sloan!! I get that using the verbiage "do you have a restroom" to request facilities may sound like a great time to make a joke about being the only restaurant in the city without a restroom, but it's rude. I like the feel of the fireside. We were there in the summer and it felt airy with big accordion windows that open in the front. The staff was friendly and the backlit bar adds a warm element to the place. We enjoyed the lox, tomato soup and strawberry kombucha. They also have a fairly complete kids menu. Based upon what is written here and my basic sense of the place, I think the kitchen is having an off night. The place was full on a Friday night, something the restaurant a few doors down could not say. All three Burgers at our table were overcooked and bland, but the lettuce, tomatoes and pickles on them were top notch. It made me wish I had ordered a salad! I suspect that tomato was an heirloom as it was quite flavorful, especially considering it is October in the PNW. The ketchup and fries were also great, giving me a peculiar nostalgia of fast food fries from my childhood. However, the roasted carrots tasted like grill smoke and oil more than anything else, and the Brussels were slightly burned for my taste but otherwise good in flavor. Everything took slightly longer to come out than I would expect from a well run popular restaurant. Our service was fantastic and our waiter was super attentive despite the demanding crowds. I really appreciated this touch. The hubster's cocktail was knock out fantastic and the highlight of the night. Overall, I would not object if someone suggested we dine here again, but with all the great food in Portland, I won't be seeking The Fireside again for anything more than a cocktail by the fire. read more

I've been here twice and it's not that impressive, my recent trip I ordered a French dip, the meat was low quality and was so chewy it was like meet bubble gum. Service was very slow, it was busy but anytime we needed help we were responsible for flagging down a random waiter otherwise we didn't get any table touches. 2 stars instead of three because they charge you $4.00 for a quarter slice of Avocado. $16 for one Avocado is insane and who ever priced that isn't trying to provide a fair deal but rip you off instead to make a few more bucks. I'm sad to report that one of my favorite spots has gone downhill. You have to understand, I loved this restaurant. It was one of my absolute go-to Portland spots. Rumor has it there is a new chef. I didn't think there was anything wrong with the old chef. But change can be good - so I took my family with high expectations. Unfortunately Fireside failed on almost every dish. The service and atmosphere were still good but the execution of the food was mediocre at best. Three examples follow: 1) A hamburger ordered medium-rare was brutalized - cooked to beyond well done. The bun was not toasted and was crumbly. For nearly $20 (with avocado and a fried egg) it was one of the worst burgers-to-value we have experienced in Portland. A $4 burger at Little Big Burger is much much better. 2) The French dip was completely unacceptable. The meat was cooked to beyond recognition and was cut thick and therefore somewhat chewy. This was one of the worst French dips we have ever eaten. Arby's is better by far. 3) The house smoked salmon was more like salmon jerky - chewy and dry. As a result the salt content was exaggerated and was quite unpleasant. Very disappointing to say the least. I am hopeful that these are just transitional issues with a new head chef. However on this occasion The Fireside hugely disappointed. read more
