After the "best" local cobbler completely ruined a new pair of shoes by cutting into the leather sole and sloppily painting it over on a simple job (just adding topy, not even rewelting), I wanted to find a cobbler that can actually do a goodyear welt. This place fixed the goodyear welted boots to a pristine degree, fixed some issues I didn't even ask for, and polished them in a way that actually made them look totally brand new. The Rick Owens Ramones needed some real work. What they do hear for Rick Owens sneakers is pretty special in the sense that they know the shoes, the seasons, and how to fix the common issues. I had the heel rebuilt and the inside leather repaired, as well as heel taps. They look incredible and the cobbler totally lived up to their reputation. read more

I go here for two primary reasons: (1) to protect new shoes and (2) to refresh / clean shoes up after they've been roughed up during seasonal wear & tear, i.e. sandals in the summer and leather shoes during the winter. Hands down the best shoe repair in Manhattan. These guys can fix anything, they fix things well, and they do it for very competitive prices. The average cost to Vibram the sole and heel of a boot in NYC is $55-60 and you probably won't even get name-brand Vibram! At the Firm, it's $38 or so depending on how complex the sole is, and they use real Vibram soles, not some cheap alternative. The best thing about the Firm is that they're experts when it comes to exotic designers. I have a pair of Boris Bidjan Saberi boots with a split heel, so the Firm had to cut the Vibram at an angle to line it up with the split. The end result was perfect. I've brought Carol Christian Poell boots here to be vibram'd, which they also did perfectly (no issues with change in profile like reviewer Erik A mentioned with his CCP boots). I had torn a hole straight through the sole of my Saint Laurent chelsea boots and the Firm did a beautiful job resoling them. I trust them with my Guidi, my Thom Browne, everything. Unlike a lot of reviews on here, I think their service is fantastic. Negotiable time frames for getting your order done, free touch-up shining after their work is done if you aren't happy with it, quick order retrieval (it absolutely doesn't take 10-20 minutes like reviewer Amy T said), and flexibility/willingness to do more unusual jobs like adjusting the length of pants suspenders. Now, the Firm isn't perfect. Don't get your shoes shined here. They do a great job, but it's expensive. This is NYC, you can get a good shoe shine literally anywhere for dirt cheap, so don't bother coming to the Firm just for that. Also, for simple leatherwork, they can be a little expensive. I'm talking belt adjustments, bag strap fixes, etc. There are better leather workers for that stuff (Yakub Shoe Repair on 229 Sullivan St is great for cheap, quick leatherwork). However, when it comes to anything to do with fixing shoes, there is no substitute for the Firm. Lastly, I have to defend the Firm against Carlos I's accusations that their staff are homophobic. This is absolutely untrue. I've seen people from all walks of life come to the Firm to get their shoes repaired. The staff are always polite, quiet, and courteous, regardless of who they're serving. They're men of very few words. I have owned Zara shoes in the past and trust me when I say it's not the Firm's fault those shoes are garbage. The Firm has never done me wrong on any of the shoes I've sent them, nor have they wronged any of my friends who also take their shoes here. read more

I have been coming to this place since 2015. This is a fantastic cobbler with very reasonable prices. I learned about this place from friends who work in fashion and garment construction. I have had 5 pairs of shoes repaired here (prada, margiela, gucci, tom ford, and john lobb) and they have always done a fantastic job. They always do a very clean job re-soling shoes with Vibrams, and re-heeling them (it takes 1 week for them to do a resole or re-heel job). I also always come here to get taps put on my shoes which they finish in like 10 minutes. A thorough cleaning is finished within 10 minutes too. I have never had any serious alterations, stretching, or dye jobs on my shoes though so I cannot comment on things like that. Recently they have been charging a cash-only deposit of half the job cost, which I do find a bit inconvenient as the deposit is cash-only. I trust this place, and although they don't have fixed prices, they have always been reasonable with what they charge. read more

NEVER bring your shoes here unless you want them destroyed. This cobbler destroyed a $500 pair of almost brand new Rag and Bone boots. I have been taking my designer shoes to Firm for years, and while their quality has been at times sloppy, they have never destroyed a pair of shoes like they did on this pair. The owner refused to take responsibility and would not cover the cost of the shoes. They only destroyed the left shoe, which indicates an error on their side, not the stretching process itself. The leather, once soft and beautiful, is now crackled, wrinkled and buckled. I am heartbroken not only by the error, but by the lack of responsibility. They have ruined a pair of leather boots. The folks here (Russian, I believe) are truly awesome. They do solid work (watch repair, shoe repair) quickly and charge very reasonably ($6 for removing links from a watch, multiple times, as it was difficult to get a good fit with the strange clasp on my watch). If they can't do something, they will tell you so thus saving you both time and money. I appreciate such honesty! At one point I was coming in weekly with various pairs of boots, asking if they could be taken in. Hot shoe man told me exactly the type of boots he'd be able to take in to fit my ankle and calves snugly. Ah yes, did I mention he's hot in a surly Russian manner? And remarkably patient for tolerating my extreme frustration with boot-makers. ETA: I just got back a pair of boots which had to be re-heeled (I'd worn through the rubber to the wood) and hot shoe man inquired if I wanted to add rubber grips to the balls of the soles - which indeed, seemed wise. He did a perfect job restoring my boots and even polished them up nicely, all for $28. They look brand new! read more

I came in on a Wednesday afternoon, with a left-side, thigh-high, suede leather, zipperless boot with a loose heel. (it became detached from too many a night doing the street-walking...jk). i needed it by friday afternoon, which i had to somewhat argue for. totally understandable since they would have to re-attach the heel from the inside, as i watched the hot shoe repair guy with the greasy apron reach his hand into my boot and pull it up like a sleeve thats way too long for him. we agreed for friday 5pm AND he gave me a grin with smiling eyes. awww..... no lip from him whatsoever which was pretty cool. and as it turns out it was actually ready by noon! 14$ since it was only one side. the left boot joined the right boot later that friday night and hit the streets. ..and made a killing! read more

If your shoes and boots are more expensive than your rent, then make the things last. These guys have fixed, repaired and resoled all my boots for the past several years an I continue to be amazed an how well they do it. This place repairs shoes. What? You want more? Ok, fine. Turns out they do some other things too, and in this case, they make sure that various and sundry people will have access to my apartment without me being there. Twice in the last month my friend from Queens has texted* me asking if he can stay at my place when he's visiting Brooklyn. Normally this'd be no problem (I encourage this activity, especially from attractive, single women**) but both times he's asked, I haven't been home. And, not in the "oh, I'll be back kickin' it to Rob Base by 3" kind of way, but the "I'm in Oregon and even if I wanted to let you in, you could get back to Queens before then" kind of way. So I took my keys to get duplicates made so he and another friend of mine could have backups. Turns out I've got a particular key that says*** "don't duplicate!" as it opens the front door of the building. Fine, I understand your concern Mr. Keymaker Guy, but I need duplicates and the fine folks at locksmiths all over Brooklyn turning me**** down isn't helping. Fortunately, Firm to the rescue. On the walk up Fourth Ave. last week, I passed this place and noticed their "keys made here" sign. Wondering if that indeed meant they'd make duplicates of my keys, and not just that they are cocaine-dealing druglords*****, I took the keys inside. Fifteen minutes later I had my new sets of keys so that my friends can come drink my beer even when I'm not home. One star off for the cost of the key -- $12 for the big one but $1.25 for the others. Not terrible, but I at least I have dupes now. * - C'mon, 'texted' is still viewed as a misspelled word? That's ridiculous! Isn't it common enough at this point? ** - Oh, who are we kidding? *** - Actually, the statement is embossed on the key; I think if the key actually talked, someone would need to check my Diet Coke for the mushrooms Neil Patrick Harris must have slipped in there. **** - Locksmiths .... and laaaaaddiiiieeesss. ***** - I cannot vouch for any status of cocaine, or other drug, dealing going on the premises. I was quoted 38 which is less than half of all the other shoe repair shops I visited quoted. Service was quick and the quality was solid. DO NOT BRING DESIGNERS' SHOES HERE! They butchered $700 shoes for $18 job. I brought a pair of new Gucci shoes and asked for a 1/4 inch rubber pads to each heel. Now I was waiting while they were doing the job and it came out. The both shoes were all scratched and creased over on the upper leather. These must have come from the cast where they put the shoes on and hammered relentlessly. The shoes look completely tired and aged 5 years old within 10 minutes. Not only are these new shoes but they are Gucci. The logos are clearly shown and I told him these are new shoes too. The guy who did the job kept looking at me, he must have known what he did. I was/am totally devastated. I brought the shoes to prepare for special dinner event, and now they butchered the shoes. I will NEVER go back to this place again. Ever. read more

Made a quick stop here to find something that'll fill out my too-big suede pumps. They have everything you'd ever need for your footwear troubles: shoe inserts, heelgrips, soft/rubber/sheepskin insoles, and the like in almost every shoe size. As nondescript as it may seem, this place had customers constantly coming in and going out in the small interval I stayed there. I actually brought my shoes in to test some stuff out, and the guy at the counter took care of everything for me! He applied two heelgrips to the back of each shoe and inserted insoles until I was satisfied with the fit. It came to a total of $9, and I happened to only have a very large bill on me and the guy was totally nice about it. Awesome! I'll be back if I need anything else seeing as how they gave great service. read more

Let me start off by saying when I moved here I had no idea how much I will have to repair my shoes. I am from California and never once did I ever repair any shoes I owned. Well, I decided to go to a place that is by my work called Andrade Shoe Repair, and can I just say they are the biggest ripoff to fix shoes imaginable. Just to re-heel my boots I paid $18. Of course I thought this was a normal price since I have never repaired shoes before. Thank god, I found out that price is ridiculous. And I found a much more reasonable store that is just as close. I have taken my shoes to Firm 3 times and every time I have been happy with their service. My shoes comes back to me looking brand new and they charge a fair price. I went in yesterday with two pairs of boots. To get a new tip on one pair, both shoes re-heeled and one pair ploished, they are charging me $35. I think that is pretty reasonable. Believe the hype, this place is great! Before winter started, I took a pair of old boots in to get re-heeled. Their work was really clean and the results looked especially great considering how badly I had worn down the heel. I also took in a leather tote bag that was coming apart at the handles. They sewed it back together exactly as I asked, even making the handles stronger with extra stitching. Prices were reasonable, and even lower than I expected for the bag. This place is awesome, although it has a bit of a lackluster appearance. I had to get my cartier watch resized, and didn't feel like going uptown (or dealing with the obnoxious employees) at the cartier store. Other east village jewelers told me it'd be like $50+ plus to have it done. I went there and they did it on the spot, in front of me, for under $10. They rock. Don't know what I would do without them! I've brought a pair of Dolce Vita black boots here for a polish each winter for the past three years. Each time they first assess the sole and heel and then polish them up to make them look brand new. They also saved my favorite purse. Thanks to a strong willed and stylish friend, I bought a large beautiful studded Steve Madden shoulder bag years ago, when I was a young and broke New Yorker. The studs have held up through the years making this bag a keeper but the leather started to fray on the straps. A worker took the bag from me and with a wink said, "this bag used to be your problem and now it is ours!" They secured the leather on the straps and it's still in great condition two years later. The gentlemen at Firm Shoe Repair have never disappointed me and will even work to make things right if you're not satisfied with the initial result. Decent shoe repair with excellent turnaround time. However, I've been a little disappointed by the lack of attention to detail when adding rubber heels/soles by leaving the logos showing (I'd prefer them hidden) and not working to retain an identical sole profile as originally intended for the boot. Namely, putting a large stack of rubber on the bottom of my heel, raising the profile of the boot considerably. I've sent the boot back to the original maker to have a few things fixed but I may have to mail it to my other cobbler to have those sole details fixed up. read more

I tried this place based on the other positive reviews here and they did not disappoint! I dropped off a pair of 4 year old Fluevog boots that I love, but had basically worn into the ground. They needed essentially everything replaced from the soles to the laces. I brought them in on a Tuesday and the following Monday I picked up what looked like brand new boots. The total cost for a complete replacement of the soles, cleaning and new laces was $62, a very fair price for boots that were several hundred to begin with.
