I've now brought in three of my husband's leather shoes for repair at Erik's after the soles had holes. Each time the sole has been replaced, the inner cork patched up, and the outer leather shined, prolonging the life of the shoes, and saving us hundreds of dollars in new shoe purchases. I came in with the pad of leather on my flip flops where ur feet stand on top of (sorry idk how to describe it better lol) needing to just be glued down which is an easy job but he fixed my shoe in under 2 minutes for basically pocket change I would've given him much more if I had more cash. I would only use Erik for simple heel or sole replacements. Otherwise, anything more complex, I would go to Jim's Shoe Repair which located uptown on 59th Street. Erik ruined my Made in England boots with shoddy work. I had ripped the leather that connected to the pull tab to pull my foot in. I wasn't impressed with his workmanship. After getting a second opinion at Jim's Shoe Repair, the staff said that Erik should have opened up the inner leather lining and placed the reinforced leather in between, to do the patch work. Instead, Erik stitched the leather patch on the outside of the inner leather lining, and his machine stitching was neither neat nor tidy. Even the glue workmanship is sloppy and poor with smearing. Please see photos. Erik's excuse was that no one is going to see the repair because I would be wearing pants to cover it, but that's not a good reason that his workmanship was poor. Now, I have to pay another reputable repair shop to fix his work and re-do the repair again. No repeat. If you can't do it right, then tell me to find a shoe repair place that can do it better especially if it's a high-quality boot from England. Verdict: do not bring your nice shit here! Pay the extra money elsewhere that has been business since the 1930s like Jim's Shoe Repair. read more

We discovered that this is now our closest shoe repair store and we were encouraged by the many positive reviews. Erik did not disappoint, as every aspect was great; he's pleasant, he does the work promptly, his work is really good and his prices are quite reasonable (I had new heels put on a pair of shoes today). This place is a gem. Super small joint that I assume is run by Erik since he's the only person ever there. Closed on Saturdays, so if you're coming in to get your shoes cleaned, repaired, or shined outside of the work week, be sure it's on Sunday. The shines will run you $10, a heavy clean will be $15. No stool for a while-you-wait-while-reading-the-paper kind of thing, but they take about 30 minutes per pair if you want to grab a coffee and bialy at Kossar's while the job is completed. But some serious TLC goes into the project, so your shoes will have a gleam that lasts a bit longer than your typical Midtown shine on the way to your office. Extremely unsatisfied with Erik's work. I was recommended to him by a friend and heard he got multiple pairs of boots done by Erik and I saw great reviews about him online, so I thought heck why not. I then proceeded to bring my new pair of Saint Laurent suede wyatts to him so I can get a protective outsole. Needless to say, I was horrified by his workmanship. He sanded down areas of the boots which were unnecessary and didn't even bother to repolish it. The glue job on the sole was messy as you can see dried transparent glue on large areas of the sole which weren't even being worked on. Lastly, Erik didn't even bother to wash his hands while handling my suede boots. Every cobbler should know that suede stains easily but it seems like Erik just used my boots as a towel after he washed his hands. Wouldn't recommend to anyone. read more

Just went to Erik again this weekend and the man is a shoe magician. I had these knee high boots I really loved but hadn't worn them enough. When I wanted to wear them recently I noticed a lot of the top part of the pleather fabric peeling and looking gross. Eric's Shoe Repair meets all of my personal criteria for identifying the best shoe repair places in NYC: (1) It is a true hole-in-the-wall business, with the layout of a galley kitchen or a standard walk-in closet. (2) It is owned and operated by an older gentleman with a back-in-the-old-country accent and hands the size of baseball mitts, permanently stained black from 40+ years of daily exposure to shoe polish; and (3) The business still operates the same way since the day it opened with pen-and-paper tickets and a mid-century cash register. Eric was locking his store up for the night the first time that I ever came by with two pairs of shoes that I needed touched up & resoled by the next day. He didn't hesitate to pull the metal storefront gate back up in order to take my shoes, promising to have them ready for me within 24 hours. When he didn't take down my name or any of my contact information with the shoes, I was a bit concerned and asked him, "Umm...so...do you want my name or anything?" To which he just chuckled and said, "I've been doing this for 40 years....I'll remember you." Remembering faces is one thing, but mentally linking certain pairs of shoes with faces is some next-level sh-t. And sure enough, when I returned the following day, he got up and grabbed my two pairs of finished shoes the second that I walked in the door. He has helped me out one more than one occasion by staying open a little after his posted store hours so I could get there after work. Prices are pretty good, I only have a couple other shoe repair shops to compare to, but Erik's is the cheapest. $5 for heel repairs (women's stilettos). $20-30 for full sole repair. For $7, he'll change out your worn down heels and for $10, he'll re-attach that heel you dislodged from your sole. All this while you check your Facebook (5 minutes). He is open until 6 pm Monday through Thursday, till 4 pm on Friday, and open again until 5ish on Sunday. read more
