I went to this shoe repair bc of a recommendation from a friend and took a pair of knee high leather boots to have the insole replaced as it had fallen out. Upon retrieving them, I tried them on in the store to see if everything was good and in those short moments there it seemed fine. I wore them out for the first time today (I picked them up yesterday) I noticed that the ankle was much looser. I called and said I'm not trying to be antagonistic but I noticed the ankle was looser and was asking if there was any way to shrink the leather back. He was very indignant and said there was no way they were looser. I suggested that perhaps during the installation of the insole they were stretched and again he said impossible. While on the phone w him I looked at the ankle of the boots and noticed there were two slight slices in the boot right where they were looser. This is not by design, the shaft is constructed from one piece of leather. Again, denial. My guess is that whatever apparatus he used to fold the boot down to access the insole was too sharp (these are very soft fine leather) and sliced the boot. These boots were designed by someone I know and I know these boots did not have the slice originally. Attached is a picture of the visible damage. No hate to this man but would not recommend this repair place for high quality boots. Update: The insole he installed is a size too small so I got blisters on both balls of my feet due to the edge of the insole. So now, not only did he damage my boots, I have to go elsewhere to have them replace the insole. Truly dismal. Very disappointed. read more

Still searching for a good shoe repair shop in the neighborhood unfortunately. This spot did have amazing customer service so this review is really just based off of the quality of work. I came in with my favorite pair of Vince booties - I stepped oddly with the shoes one night and the plastic base of the heap popped off. I needed to wear these shoes on Monday and I came in on a Saturday afternoon - they were able to make all the repairs in a matter of hours and I had the shoes completed by end of day! They recommended that I not only get the base of my heal fixed, but that I get my leather soles replaced entirely. I let them do this and they also cleaned the shoes for no additional cost. On initial inspection they looked fine, but the next day when I wore them I noticed that there were gaps between where they glued on the plastic soles and the shoes themselves, and the shoes were no longer as comfortable to walk in. These shoes had lasted me so long due to their quality and I am concerned that this low quality workmanship has lowered the overall longevity of the shoes. If you're looking for great customer service and a quick turnaround definitely come here. I don't think I would trust them with a high quality pair of shoes in the future however. read more

Faced with tossing out a very loved pair of leather sandals whose fabric had literally been ripped apart by a recent urban monsoon, I fled to this shop in desperation. Embarrassed by the dilapidated state of my heels, I expected this guy to laugh, put the shoe back in the bag and tell me that they were bound for the shoe grave. And while he clucked, and inspected, and noted that it would require a pretty large amount of work and money, he agreed. And then told me it would only cost $25. Um, hell yes! Even though I don't live nearby anymore, I made the trip to take a pair of boots to get re-heeled here since I've had positive results in the past. On my latest visit, the man working the counter was a different guy than I remember. When I mentioned that I specifically came here because I've liked the work on past repairs, the guy didn't really seem to care or appreciate repeat/loyal customers. When I went back to pick up my boots a few days later, the same guy was there. I am wondering if ownership has changed? He charged me $20 for the reheeling. It's been a few years, so I don't remember what I paid in the past for reheeling but this time seemed higher. Also, when I got home, I noticed that they drilled screws through the insole at the heel probably to secure the heel soles. But instead of lifting the insole lining and drilling the screws in, they just went through the insole leaving holes and with the screws visible. Leaving my rating at 4 stars overall for all the past repairs. But I will probably look for another cobbler now and compare prices. read more

They have put new soles on my shoes, new tread, reattached the heels on another and regularly replace the rubber tips on the bottom of my high heeled shoes. I highly recommend this shoe repair store! I brought a few pairs of boots to Steve's Express because my usual shoe repair place was closed. He was a little condescending when speaking to me about what I needed, but, whatever. When I come back for my boots, the darker pairs looked great, yes, but he made a complete mess of the lighter pair! First of all, he painted the heel a darker brown because he didn't have the color to match, but he should have checked with me on that first because it changed the look of the boot! He also got that same darker brown paint all around the front part of those lighter boots, so now they look dirt-stained. Because of his sloppy work on that one pair (my FAVORITE pair) I would not trust him with any more footwear. And I'm still a little salty about my favorite boots. read more

The guy in the day shift handled my minor need, on the rush with no extra charge for the rush. It was done inside two hours. It was minor work, glueing one heel back onto an Italian made leather boot. Minor work for him, but a major need for me. He said the cost would be $10 for this minor work on the one boot heel. I showed him another very minor issue, some kind of nick like, odd "undoing" of sorts on the one heel (hard to explain what it was). I asked him if he could fix this also and how much would it cost. I was not sure he would be able fix it, but I was predicting he would say another $10 per heel, but he said he would do that for free. So I pulled out the other boot and said rather than free, I suggested he charge me $15 total for the one heel re-glueing plus the odd nicks on the two heels. I had to insist. I only understood he accepted charging me $15 when I saw the receipt said $15. When I came back to pick up at 6pm, he was gone and the other guy gave me the boots. I hadn't asked for the boots to be shined, but unexpectedly they shined the boots for me, for free. This is what service used to be like in small communities and neighborhoods. Manhattan has lost much of this, being that clients and local residents and businesses (all) are so transient. It was good to have the feeling that I was treated like a human being rather than a profit opportunity. Now I am thinking what other old shoes can I have him fix? read more

I will NEVER bring my shoes here again. Not only did they ruin my new shoes, but they were VERY RUDE about it. I brought in a NEW pair of $200 ankle boots to get rubber soles put on the bottom. When I went to pick them up the soles where on, but the entire boot had been polished black beyond recognition. He even polished the natural(gray/taupe) stacked heel black. When I, unhappily, pointed it out he smirked and laughed that it was just a little dust from working on the shoe. His assistant even said he liked them better with the black heel. WTF? Really? They proceeded to take the boots into the back and started trying to scrub the hell outta the heel to try to remove the black polish. They looked like hell, they told me to come back the next day. Oh yeah, and I had already paid $30 for this. I went back the following day and the wood of the heel was better, but the black had been rubbed off of the entire edge of the shoe while they corrected the heel. (You would have thought they would have noticed that, given the situation). I pointed it out and he took it into the back again. The guys working there smirked and spoke down to me the entire time, while I was clearly upset that my NEW boots had been ruined, or at the very least were not the same as when I brought them in to get the soles done. I see a guy sitting at a table by the end of the room (not behind the counter). I say "are you Steve?" He confirms, while speaking Russian on the phone. "Oh, you speak Russian?" I say, in Russian. "Yes," he answers, switching to the tongue of the Motherland. A little boy in the room chuckles. I hand Steve my Soviet watch. "What's wrong with it?" he asks. "I keep having sporadic troubles with it." He opens it up and looks at me. "Who put this battery in?" That would be me. "Malodetz." (A Russian word that can be translated to "accomplisher of great tasks.") "My dad gave me the battery, along with the watch." "He's a malodetz too. The battery is double the size it needs to be." He then follows up with some unfamiliar cheeky Russian proverb. It was something about Soviet warriors. Steve swaps the battery for an appropriately sized one. The watch starts running fine. "You and your dad should stick to what you do well" "Err, um, if I have any problems with the watch, I"ll be back". I step outside. I then realize that Steve might want some money for his troubles. I come back in. "Hey, Steve, how much for the battery?" "I thought you were going to walk off with it. $5" Kind of steep for a watch battery. But I gave it to him. When i picked them up decided to bring another pair to get resoled & heeled. I was told I had 2 options, either get the whole leather sole replaced and brand new heel...essentially a whole new bottom for $95, or adding rubber heel, and building up the sole of the shoe for $65. I was drawn in by all the positive reviews, but unfortunately did not have a good experience. I brought in a pair of heels, one of which had snapped. The heel was repaired in one day. Upon inspection, the job did not look impressive - the lines weren't clean, there were lumps and bubbles in the heel where the heel was "repaired". I walked down the hallway in my office this morning twice (about 50 feet) before it snapped again. How utterly embarrassing. Luckily I had flats in my office. I also had a pair of vintage Louboutins sent in for new vibrams and a cleaning. They were given back to me dirty, with black polish streaks on the bottom where the red paint is. I had previously reheeled the tips of my black pumps, but because it was a fairly standard issue repair, I didn't think it was worth mentioning. But then one day, after aggressively tugging on my knee-high boot zip, I tore a tiny section apart - enough to warrant an entire zip replacement. I brought it here, and I was charged $40 for the zip repair and reheeling. I came back a couple of days later and I remarked, "The zip's all fixed?" He said, "Yes, of course." I opened the bag to look at his handiwork, and gushed, "Wow, I can't even tell which one was the broken one."
