I use to live across the street. I came in to drop off a pair of vintage orange shoes to get the toes part tapped. The guy grabbed me for a kiss. He molested me. I never came back. That was 20 years ago. On my recent visit, I totally forgot about this place. But while looking for my very old apartment, I saw the shoe shop. I saw him. He was still working in the shop. He was still there. I wanted come back for my shoes but was always scared. If I could give this place Zero stars i would. My husband brought a new pair never worn YSL pumps to get rubberized soles and came home with a completely damaged torn patent leather pump. Now I understand mistakes happen but the complete dishonesty and lack of accountability is what was so shocking. When we noticed the tear we returned this morning asking why this wasnt brought to our attention during pickup and well as to see if anything could be done to fix the shoe. The owner proceeded to take no blame stating my shoe was too small to put on the machine so he had to do it by hand which lead to the tear and the best he could do was glue the tear down but there was nothing else he could do. Not only did he not offer to refund the $40 for his botched work he said he wouldn't reimburse us for the actual cost of the shoe and that if we had an issue to "sue him" . He kept saying that he was a small business owner and things happen. Now we arent cold hearted people who wouldn't be understanding but if he had been honest during pick up instead of hoping we wouldnt notice the situation could have been avoided. Instead he wanted to plat victim and even going to the lengths of saying "you can afford it". Its disgusting and appalling that someone can operate a small business with no moral or ethics. I seriously don't like writing bad reviews, but this was one of the worst experiences I've had in a while. I literally just wanted a shoe shine. Literally the easiest thing to ask of a shoe repair person. He gave me an incredible amount of attitude from the minute I walked in (I'd ever so rudely entered interrupting his socializing cigarette he just lit). He was so mad! I didn't even say a word. Anyway, I dropped my shoes there, got them, went home and found super-oddly colored parts of my show. Dark brown marks on my tan shoe, etc. as well as non-shined spots as well. So I brought them back in and he gave me a 5 minute lecture on the hassle it was. He redid it after I argued for it, and my shoes are barely better. I feel like my shoes are ruined. All I wanted was a shoe shine. He was surprisingly good at whistling though. That's why I left him one star. read more

Alex was working when I came in on a Friday evening. The zipper on one of my boots wasn't working and I was on my to an event. He added oil to zipper very carefully & didn't get it on the suede. With some significant manipulation we were able to get it working again. I made it to my event & was able to dance the night away. And he didn't even charge me for it read more

People that don't live in New York don't know what the deal is about shoe repair. If you live in the suburbs, you wake up, get dressed, put on your shoes. Walk in your carpeted house to your garage, get in your car, drive to work, walk ten yards to the carpeted office. A pair of shoes will go out of style waay before they get worn out. In New York, you'll wear a pair of wingtips and walk a two miles from your office to Grand Central on a nice day. And you walk over five blocks to have lunch with your buddy ("Take the crosstown? At this time of day? Are you crazy? I want to have lunch, not dinner!"). Or stroll around after dinner. Or walk from bar to bar. Whatever you do, you'll put a lot more miles on your shoes than you'd think possible. Here shoes wear out, not get donated to goodwill (but, on the flip side, whenever you're in suburbia, do swing by those thrift stores). Anyway... Last year I took an old pair of Florsheim wingtips to Franks--I'd had them since 1994 and the soles were wearing out. I asked him to "winterize" them so I could wear them when it's wet or snowy. He put on a thin, ribbed, rubber "sport" sole that covered 80% of the leather sole and a new rubber heel. Way more comfortable than it was with the stacked leather heel, and no problems wearing them in bad weather. Now, a year (and many, many Manhattan miles) later, the rubber sole had a small hole and the heels were worn down. I brought them back to him. Frank looked at the shoes and said, "This is my work." Not a question, a statement. 3 days later, new rubber sole, new heels, a great shine, and I'm back in biz for a couple Franklins less than a new pair of wingtips. And they're already broken in. As an aside, he also sharpens knives. A friend had some knives sharpened, and he went a bit nuts on them. Not so much sharpening as regrinding deep into the blade. Not recommended. read more

Horrible, horrible, horrible! See my reasons below on why I will never go back here: 1.) The owner Alex told me my boots would be ready on Tuesday...yet when I showed up Tuesday he told me 'oh shoot..I thought you were coming Wednesday...'. Wouldn't have been that big of an issue but he told a girl the same thing the following day when I went back. Stick to what you say, or call and give someone the curteousy if things are delayed. 2.)Alex was inappropriate w his 'come back and give me a kiss' or 'let me give you a massage' comments. Completely uncomfortable. 3.) When I finally got my boots on Wednesday, the zipper was crooked, there were still pen marks all over my $200 boots and he then proceeds to ignore me when I tell him I wasn't happy with the work. This place is creepy, unprofessional, and does lousy work!!! I will NEVER be back there again. read more

The owner Alex is a little creepy and can be a bit inappropriate (extreme over sharer), but is actually very nice and does great work very cheaply. I highly highly recommend this place - my nice boots now have new rubber on the heals and are polished to look like new for $15. Can't beat it compared to the rest of the city. read more

Alex is amazing! i brought in two pairs of shoes to fix and he did it for $10. my first pair of high-heels was missing the pin (the cushion on the heel of the shoe) and he replaced it with one that was a similar color to the other pin. he even spray painted it so they look the same! they look perfect again :) my other pair was alot trickier. it was a pair of maryjanes that had a buckle for the strap. the buckle had fallen off some time ago so there was no wear i could wear them. luckily, alex found a buckle that was close in shape (not in color, but oh well). with a little string, super glue, and friendly conversation in the meantime, he got my mary janes totally wearable again :) patient and very creative man! I tried to give him $15 because he was just so friendly and helpful but he was adamant that I take $5 back! great shoe guy read more

Fast and effective. Actually charged me less when I went in to have shoes resoled because it only needed the heel done.

Alex is the best. He can fix things most other shops can't. He's hands down my favorite cobbler in the city, and I've been to many.

I am happy to report that Franks show repair (Alex has been there every time that I have) does GREAT work at very reasonable prices. I've got some average shoes as well as some high end - Alex has given them new life for a fraction of the price of a new pair. A must for anyone who cares about their shoes. DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU LIKE YOUR SHOES. I brought in 2 pairs of shoes to have the heels and soles fixed and now both are unwearable. 1 pair was a metallic silver boot, when i got them back the bottom half of it was polished black. the other pair was a black and white leather pump. the white leather is now gray and distressed as though harsh chemicals were used on it. they were both very expensive pairs of shoes. after telling the shoe guy that they were not done properly and i shouldn't have to pay, he yelled at me at told me that his hard work must be paid for. either i pay, or he doesn't give me my shoes. so, 60 dollars later, i will be bringing these shoes to the shoe repair in my old neighborhood in hopes that they will be able to salvage at least one of the pairs. if you go here, you are risking your shoes. read more

Look, you aren't going here for friendly conversation. The gentleman may seem a bit gruff; however, he does good work at a good price. I've been going here since 2010, mostly to get high heel tips repaired. I've always been satisfied with the results. Most recently, he fixed the zipper pulls on my luggage that baggage handlers had torn off. He has even done a couple of things free of charge, such as clamping the back on a watch after I changed the battery myself and gluing the sole back on a pair of wedges.
