First Course is a salad place similar to Salata and the like. As with similar places, service was quick and there are lots of salad-y (yes, that's a word) options. If you're looking for a light meal, this is a good option. read more

First Course is my new first choice lunch spot in San Antonio! It's conveniently located off of I-10, and we managed to go on a rainy day so we didn't have to wait. My first impression was excellent. The staff is approachable, and genuine. They answered the few questions I had, and made helpful recommendations. I ordered the chicken wrap, and found the saffron mayo to be an interesting and welcomed addition. I got a side of sesame miso dressing, which I would recommend with it. They have a diverse array of sauces, all of which I hope to try soon. The other two members of my party ordered salads, and they were HUGE! The small size alone could've lasted me a couple meals. Can we discuss the variety of toppings? So many options! Now for the last reason I give this spot 5 stars, the cleanliness! How they keep all the food prep areas and white countertops so clean is a mystery. Also the bathrooms were spotless, is this place even real? But seriously, everything about it is so clean, meticulous, and planned right down to the small details. I used to go here weekly. However, I will not return for two reasons; 1. They are requiring all patrons to wear a mask, even though our Governor has removed the mask order. 2. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the food and the friendliness of the staff. People venture to First Course Salad Kitchen because they're searching for a better option than some of the other build-your-own salad places in town. Okay, so let's get to it. As I shuffled down the salad line, bountiful fresh greens and grains were presented to me. I opted for the farro and spinach with a dash of iceberg. All of these were fresh: the farro still had its expected texture and color, the iceberg was crisp, and the spinach wasn't wilting or saggy like the bags on my grandma's arms (love you grandma!!). Build-your-own salad bars are to us healthy-eating adults what build-your-own yogurt shops are to kids. An internal, almost secretive part of us gets excited when we can change up the selection of healthy toppings which will soon lie upon the green pyramid lining the metallic bowl in which our salads are prepared. Other BYO-salad bars' motto for their ingredients echoes "Fresh at first" whereas First Course's motto for ingredients echoes "Fresh is first". See the difference? I did. I tasted the difference too. So, yeah. I was able to add blueberries (which were FRESH AND RIPE) and a bunch of other stuff that I really don't remember. I know that when I looked at the cilantro sitting out that it wasn't bruised, which is a sign that the kitchen knows how to properly cut herbs. My fork reduced my mountain of vegetables to a proverbial mound of gravel. OH, quick shout out to the ladies behind the salad counter who were cleaning up and wiping down the salad counter when there was no line. Instead of texting or Facebooking they take pride in what they do and understand the importance of a clean serving area. Anyways... I see a number of Yelp reviews complaining about the price of a salad here. Guys, it's not crazy more expensive than other places. Here's the advantage of First Course over Salata: No lines, fresher ingredients, quieter environment, and a cleaner restaurant. For these reasons I think First Course is a much better value than Salata, hands down. This is the kind of place you hate to give a good review because you know you're going to have a much longer wait next time you come. I had a fully loaded salad. With bacon, avocado, and a large portion of freshly grilled juicy steak it came out to $17. It was enough food for two adults and a small child. Everything in it was great. I especially liked the pickled green tomato. My wife had a steak wrap served with a side of shishito peppers. Fresh, grilled and lightly salted. The staff are all detailed oriented. Today, I gave a second chance to First Course, and I'm very happy about the decision. This spot is definitely what I would call a hidden gem - there were steadily about 15 people inside the 60-seat space from 1-2pm on a random Tuesday. Upon arrival, I went to the restroom, and found it to be impeccably clean - cleaner than a Chick-fil-A or a Bucee's, which typically have among the cleanest restrooms in any public facility that I've visited in the San Antonio area. Ordering was a breeze and the food was crafted right in front of you.... they even offered to give me a hand and take the tray to my table, which I happily obliged. I can see my wife appreciating this when she's juggling our infant daughter. I recently converted to a pescatarian diet (a Mediterranean diet with a focus on veggies, grains, and fish) and decided to try the veggie wrap, adding broccoli and red pepper flakes for a little extra heat. Fantastic!! I savored every bite, never imagining a meat-free sandwich tasting so good. The menu is certainly on the healthy-side, without obnoxiously screaming "vegan or die," like some healthy eateries seem to make you feel. I would give this place zero stars if possible. I initially wrote a review that stated I paid $52 for two salads. I'd like to update : I paid $52 for two salads, 2 cookies and a tip. After I wrote the review, I got a very rude email from Diane, the owner stating my review was inaccurate because I didn't include the cookies and tip. At the end she told me "not everyone appreciated high quality food." I wonder if the high ratings of her restaurant are from her shaming other negative reviewers. I'm appalled at her lack of etiquette, and quite frankly, bullying for a negative post. If you want mediocre salad for a high price tag, this is your place. Bottom line - not a good value. I got the Spicy Chiken wrap since some Yelpers were raving over the saffron mayo. The potion was adequate for an inactive 10 year old girl. While FC was clean, it looked a little run down, with some of the pressed wood furniture in disarray, panels falling off, screws sticking out. I have been twice now and its very consistent. ALL and I mean ALL the ingredients are super fresh - is there a farm out back??? The dressings are amazing, and you can taste any of them if you are curious. The chicken was grilled and seasoned to perfection and I highly recommend it. Upon my 2nd visit I decided to spring for 1 of their 70 cal 4oz yogurt mixes.... WHAT IS THIS BLACK MAGIC??? SooooOOOO good! I got the Burnt Sugar. Imagine the top layer of Creme Brulee. There is a shortage of good eating in this Boerne border ares, there are restaurants but the quality is lacking and the reviews are more the result of cold frothy beers and florescent tropical alcoholic delights. The decor very Industrial euro with a hint of country. Very clean and service friendly. They have been here 2 yrs and are still trying to get the assembly line service down, but they try. So you pick your base(type of lettuce) and add other fixings. I hate going to Salata too far and traffic so thank you yes this will Work. Food spilled out of the wrap onto the wooden plate. Sanitary? The wrap just really wasn't very good (spicy chicken). Half of the cubed chicken was just really chewy and felt like it wasn't fully cooked. On the positive side, the people were nice and the grilled jalapeños were excellent. Plenty of seating at lunch. California where I'm from had some restaurants with this same concept but did it a lot better, so I am biased because the ones in CA were so good. That said, I was glad to have a build your own salad place in SA this one is better than the other BYO salad bar I tried in SA. Just had this place for lunch. It's always great and fresh. The only reason I didn't give this place a 5 is the price. It's a little steep for a salad or a wrap. I can easily walk out paying 13-15 dollars for a salad without a drink. A friend of mine added steak, avocado, bacon, and hummus and ended up paying somewhere around 27 dollars for his wrap. Haha so be careful on those "add ons." BUT none the less--its a great place for a clean healthy eating. Their chicken and steak are always made to order and chipped right in front of you.
