This restaurant has previously always been a 5 for us when in town. No longer. Went for a birthday dinner this past weekend. Food was average. Ordered oysters and crispy rice tuna and artichoke for apps. The crispy rice was the star of the show. The artichoke was the most pitiful artichoke we have ever been served. It arrived lukewarm and there was literally no "meat" on the petals. Of 6 orders, 1 of us had the wrong entree delivered. Had ordered blacked fish tacos and was served the battered fried. Waiter quickly apologized and took the incorrect order back. New tacos delivered super fast, but were barely lukewarm. Bad value for $24! The salmon and shrimp and mahi mahi were average. No recognition of the birthday. On the great side, our waiter was enthusiastic and prompt. read more

I've been coming here for years. The food quality is good and has been consistent. My issue is that the prices have gone up and the portion sizes are half of what they used to be. I had the fried shrimp dinner and they were literally four maybe five very small shrimp on the plate and a very petite baked potato. Like I've never seen a potato at a restaurant served that small before. I wanted to avoid the Taco Tuesday crowd and went on Wednesday instead. Luckily for me, the Wednesday dinner special is my favorite...the crab dinner which consists of half a pound of Alaskan King and half a pound of Snow crab along with two sides. Note: some of the sides like the popular roasted Brussels sprouts are an extra $2.99 but great value overall! I loved the mashed potatoes too. The sourdough bread starter was awesome. We tried the Clam Chowder which was very tasty and contained a lot of clams. I didn't even use the oyster crackers. The manchild ordered the fish n chips which he enjoyed, and DH ordered the fish tacos. They both were so full. I really love that brown rice, rather than white rice accompanies the entrees. Next time, I'll try one of their signature cocktails, lobster mac and desserts. The place has a nice warm ambiance, very Tommy Bahama-esque. Surfboards on the ceiling. This restaurant/bar is top notch. The locals gather and chat while the people from out of town, sit and eat wonderful meals. The servers, waiters, bar persons all get to know those they serve and treat those from out of town the same as the local people, which is very unique. Beside great food there is a good family feeling. I am happy to go to the Fishbar knowing that happy feelings would be there waiting for me, as any other person who goes there without a attitude. The people are all hard working yet find time to stop and say a kind word to people. QUESTIONABLE. The management loaded pages of their stock photos. You have to really work through Yelp to even see real life photos. Perhaps that was my first tip that this place is off. WRONG FLAVORS The flavor profiles are lacking severely lacking nuance here. Not a fan of the favors. * Ingredient quality were indiscernible given the over use of jalapeños, lemon, sour cream, etc. * Clam chowder tasted terribly wrong with jalapeno cooked into the base. My in-laws didn't even touch their food after their first bite... OVERPRICED I agree with the reviews about puny serving sizes. * Mahi-mahi entree had super thin fish portions for $21. Happy hour prices SEEM reasonable. Until you get your 4 Brussels spouts. Or your palm sized serving of calamari. Or your razor thin salmon sashimi (more carpaccio style) with too much lemon juice that essentially cooked the fish. Or your ice cream scoop of mac and cheese. Last I checked, pasta is $1/lb. YELP 100 CHALLENGE 2017 - PART 3: 13/100 Fishbar came highly recommended by a colleague, so the team decided it's the place to go for the next birthday celebration. Parking was easy - there are plenty of metered spots available across the street They would only take reservations for a party of 8 or more. There were only 7 of us. Booo... We walked in and there were plenty of people already seated. (We found out why - they have an $11 special for the first 20 customers of the day.) We didn't like where we were gonna be seated (I'll explain below.) We noticed an open booth at a corner and asked if we could be seated there instead. "Sorry, those tables have been reserved." (Ugh... that whole minimum 8 for reservations blows.) We ended up getting seated at one of the high tables and high chairs. Now, I normally don't care where I'm seated as long as I'm comfortable, but these tables and chairs were everything BUT. ONE: they were ridiculously too high, and many of us aren't that tall, so once we sat down, our feet couldn't reach the floor to scoot closer to the table. You gotta be at least 6 feet tall to do that or ask someone to push you in. TWO: the seats positioned too close not only amongst us, but too close to the next table. I barely had any wiggle room. (Good thing they didn't seat anyone next to us, we probably would have ended up sharing a table!) As you can imagine, it took forever for us to get settled before we got the chance to look at the menu. I initially took interest at the Idaho Trout, but was convinced their $11.99 lunch specials were good, especially the shrimp and scallops. I opted for the mahimahi instead (with Cesar salad and clam chowder.) Food came out quick, so that's a plus. The clam chowder had a strong hint of sweetness to it - like they cooked it with corn syrup. The sweetness was too invasive. I had to add the entire bag of oyster crackers as well as salt and pepper to even out the flavor. It was pointless, though. I ended up eating less than half, I just couldn't take that sweet taste. Salad was okay - it's a typical Cesar. I really liked the dressing and enjoyed each bite - up until I started biting into stale croutons. I was a bit confused because some of them were fresh. I'm leaning toward thoughts of them mixing old and new croutons. So, really, it was just... meh. Having admitted this faux pas, the salad, sadly, was the best part of the meal. Not only was the mahi bland, it was also DRY. I did not enjoy that at all. I still had hunger pangs after having half the soup and (most) of the salad, but this fish was prepped and cooked so poorly that I was only able to eat half the serving. Salt and pepper didn't do squat. So, I'm recommending to skip this. Service got slow after delivery of our meals. Many of us needed our water replenished and nowhere did we find anyone to do it. Needless to say, even that minute task seems to be a challenge for them. It also took some time for them to pick up the check. Yes, I was uncomfortable the whole time (due to the cramped space) while eating poor quality food. No wonder it only cost $11.99 for the meal. For a couple bucks more, I could have lunched on something much better at El Segundo Fish Co. While sitting comfortably. With my feet on the ground. Fellow Yelpers are raving about their happy hour. I initially thought that might be the only reason to come back until I learned their happy hour time slot start and end way too early. So... no. This might just be first AND last. One of our favorite places to eat when we visit the beach cities! Always packed but usually can get a table pretty quickly. Daily specials are great and happy hour - with seafood! Close call, we know. A+ for the kind hostess who didn't judge us for rushing our order. We got the chipotle calamari, coconut shrimp, pancetta mac n cheese, and oysters. For drinks, I got the Fishbar margarita. My personal favorites of the night were the calamari and the mac n cheese. In terms of portions, cost, and taste the oysters and coconut shrimp are not worth it. Neither is the margarita. I know that they're supposed appetizer size but neither taste or sized delivered. I will say though everything tasted fresh! All in all, great place for munching on stuff for HH. I would look into nearby places for drinks. read more

Great affordable fish fare! Seating is a little odd to me. Always feel a little cramped getting to my seat but doesn't really bother me once I'm seated. Many TV's always seem to have something on, but the way the seating is doesn't seem like a place I'd go to watch an important game. Food and prices are decent. Their lunch special gets you a choice of soup or salad like clam chowder, a grill item like shrimp or salmon, and something else like a side. I think it was like 13 bucks or something pretty reasonable for a fish place. Calamari (5): this was amazing! Super crispy with huge chunks of juicy calamari. Not dried out at all. Lobster nachos (5): huge chunks of lobster! Lobster Mac n cheese (5): how can you go wrong with this combo? Fish tacos (4): tried a variety during happy hour and taco Tuesday's and the fish is fresh. Not a bad shareable for something like happy hour. They're bigger than your average street taco so you can't put away a whole bunch. Seasonal salmon specials (3): generally specials are supposed to be amazing but I've had some hit or miss dishes here. Overall solid fish joint with decent prices. Will have to come back and try some of their oysters. Anything with lobster here though seems to be a hit. read more

An okay place. We came right before happy hour ended so we were flagging our waitress down before 5:30PM so we could get our order in. Their happy hour ends a little early for me so you really have to go right after work ends in order to make it. There's a parking structure across the street that is metered but if you want free parking, you can find parking on Rosecrans. You might have to walk a bit but it's like 5-10 minutes. We heard they were well known for their oysters so we got half a dozen of those. We didn't know big the portions were but since they were on the happy hour menu, we didn't expect them to be too big so we ordered a couple more dishes. OYSTERS: Way smaller than we thought. It's hard to get a feel for the taste of the oysters when there isn't much oyster to begin with. COCONUT SHRIMP: Good but not great. The slaw and the dipping sauces were good though. But four pieces of shrimp for $8? Nah. CALAMARI: I liked it, it was pretty good. One of the few dishes I would order if I came back. PANCETTA MAC N CHEESE: Oh man this was really good. You could taste the truffle parmesan and the pancetta was on point. My favorite dish of the ones we got. MARGARITA: Not much kick to it, not worth $6. Came here recently for a dinner night out and I loved it! Super nice ambiance. It's dimly lit but not too dark at the same time. Food: The food is moderately priced, but nicely portioned. We ordered two entrees and a clam chowder (bowl) to share and still had a little left over after we were done eating. All the food tasted great. I had the salmon picatta and it was surprisingly not too heavy! They also give you complimentary bread with butter (which I always love). Service: The service is amazing here. I can't remember our waitress' name but she was super nice, and definitely made our experience here all the more wonderful. We have been coming here since it was Sharkey's, it was a true sports bar with so-so food. Parking is tight, but available across the street. It is still a sports bar, when one game was over waitress asked what game of those available, Sunday noon, we wanted. It is LOUD, so not a romantic date place. Food was just fine. Service was OK, seated quickly, waited on quickly, food came out quickly, paying the bill took a very long time since very good waitress had too many tables. Food is always great....I usually order salmon but tonight I had halibut, baked potato and grilled asparagus and it was very good, halibut cooked perfectly. It's been a struggle finding a place that could compete with New York's competitive dining scene. I felt like no matter how much the food cost in LA I was still underwhelmed by my experience until I ate at the FishBar. It is now my favorite restaurant. It's so good in so many ways. From the bartenders to the delicious food and cocktails. I had the salmon with olives (which I hate for the record) but I didn't mind them at all in this. My first visit to FishBar and it was great! I had a reservation for 5::30. We got there about 15 minutes early and we were seated. Had the crab queso dip and fried calamari for appetizers. They were both delicious. We also had the clam steamers. They were great and the broth they were in was great with bread. I had a seared ahi tuna bowl that was delicious. My main complaint was that I ordered the lobster bisque and it was extremely salty! Perhaps it had been cooking too long so the salt was concentrated. I was the only one who had lobster bisque and nobody else had a problem with their food being too salty so I might give this place the benefit of the doubt. This is one of our go to places for our office group lunch. Almost everybody would order lunch combo special which is satisfying for me. I really love the clam chowder which I always look forward every time we eat there. We shared the Poke appetizer, he had a bowl of clam chowder. I had the Mediterranean Mahi-Mahi, he loves Sea bass , this one did not disappoint. He really enjoyed his meal.
