The food was good. Clam chowder was the best meal. The service is awful. One person never got their meal after 45 minutes. It was a fish BLT. We even told the Manager. We asked them to take the cost off but then wouldn't give us the meal (to go). We had to go because we waited so long. The staff was young, confused, not trained well and didn't care about the awful service. We were a party of 8. No water refills. Skip this place. The food was great! When we called the host was quick to let us know they only had 2 wait staff on duty, we didn't mind so we went right up. We really didn't wait long at all for our food. Delicious food - mediocre ambiance - average service Walked in around 6:30 pm on a Saturday night, and despite having a few empty tables was told it would be an hour wait for 3 people ( 2 adults and 1 toddler). The host seemed like they were actively trying to turn us away by quoting a long wait. We ended up putting our name in anyway, while we looked into what other restaurants were in the area and the host came out not 5 minutes later saying they "found" a table. The restaurant is the size of a postage stamp, and no one had recently walked out, there is no way they just happened upon an empty table. Shady. Once inside it was clear they were putting all the parties with kids in the back corner. We were seated at a small table in the back next to a large group with several young kids. Small table, in the back, next to a large electrical outlet and several things plugged into it, right next to the bathroom. You could say it was less than ideal. However, for the most part, the food was pretty good. We had the cheesesteak eggrolls, which come with queso for a $2 up-charge. Delicious but ridiculous. Just serve with the cheese as a default. I ordered the tuna bowl which was a nice amount of spicy and the tuna was cooked perfectly. My partner ordered one of the specials which was scallops, shrimp, crab cake, and fish special with fries. The scallops were overcooked, and everything came with the same seasoning which was a bit too one-note. The fries were crispy and delicious and the crab cake was good as well. Kids mac and cheese was not terrible. Probably would not go back with young kids. Might just be more of a bar and adult environment. I have been coming here for years, unfortunately, for as great as the food is, as excellent the wait staff is. Something has been bothering me for a week. Our server and the kitchen were miscommunicated, and we were overcharged for a meal item. Rather than fixing it, the assistant manager boldly stated that because a mistake happened, the server had to pay for the error out of her pocket. I could see the defeat on the server's face, and we went to the manager who made it right. Still, earlier this summer servers told us that the managers love up upcharge people because no one looks at the bill. read more

This is a go to for sure! Our table had the fried flounder, crab cake, shrimp platter coconut shrimp, the shrimp avocado dip (the shrimp was cold, so fresh, as well as the homemade avocado dip-delish!) crab dip, crab cake sandwich...all of which were great ...had the drink specials which were blueberry lemonade and the Lani mixed drinks recommend both! Our server was great...the only drawback to me was the interior/bar areas seemed like it needed a good cleaning and possible shades on the porch so you could have the choice to sit outside in the shade if you wanted. Some of the picnic tables are in need of a paint job and repair. Those are minor thing when the chef/kitchen knock the food out of the park! It's a must try! read more

Service was terrible. Sitting at the bar I waited 30 minutes for a beer. I reminded the bartender after 15 minutes of waiting and the. 15 mins later I went and asked another bartender who was pouring a beer. My steak sandwich came out over an hour after ordering. It was not good and overdone. After 45 mins of waiting for it I asked the bartender, he went and checked with the kitchen and said it would be a bit longer. I saw him go directly to the computer after that. I figure he never out my order in in the first place. When I got the bill not a single beer was comped. Only reason I am giving 2 stars instead of 1 is because some people we were with we're at a table (not enough room for me and my girlfriend) and they had a good waitress and we're served several drinks each before I was able to get one at the bar. read more

Apps are absolutely amazing- the cheesesteak egg rolls are amazing and the sauces for them are great matches. The Parmesan truffle fries aren't as great, but still very good. Bit lacking on the parm, and there were scant green onions at the bottom of the plate- uncertain if they were meant as a garnish? Also a bit dry due to the lack of Parm, could be offset with a sauce? Entrees we're out of the world. My group had the grilled mahi, the seafood platter, shrimp and grits, angus burger, and a kids chicken tenders. Portions are generous, food is well seasoned. Service was absolutely spectacular- Geri was picking up other tables and still had no issue handling our table of 10. Music is great, blend of 70s 80s and such. After a tough start, our visit turned out great! The oysters were super fresh, and the old fashioned the bartender made me was top notch. When we tried to order dinner, our server, a redhead named Denise was really mean and cranky and refused to get us what we wanted. Luckily though another server named Sarah heard what was going on and came to our rescue. Sarah took over our table and made sure everything went great from there. She even brought us some of their fantastic pita bread that was so good! You should ask for Sarah and order those pita chips. And if Denise comes to your table, run away! read more

I'm giving it 1 star only because one of the people we were with over heard the wait staff say they were shocked we left a tip due to what their manager made them do. It all started with us flagging down our waitress after receiving our meals and them not checking in to see if we needed anything. One of the plates we ordered was the steak bowl. It was awful and truly inedible. Could barely chew the steak, it was tasteless ( no salt or Ketchup could fix if you know what I mean ) , and could not cut through it with a knife... a butter knife since that's all they gave us for cutlery. Took maybe and I mean barely 4 bites of this bowl which could not be stomached through and requested it be taken back - the bland taste that nothing could fix. The waitress said they would let the manager know. The manager came out and said " we will remove that for you. Would you like anything else instead?" We did the switch for the coco shrimp. When we received the bill it showed the additional coco shrimp, the steak bowl, and a discount of only $1 dollar off the steak bowl. When brought to the waitress attention she began to argue that the bowl had been somewhat eaten and that it would still have to be charged and that she will talk to the manager for us. They came back with a revised bill with a credit of $4 instead. I can surely say we will not be going back based off principle and poor customer service received for even subpar food. Not a lot of people were there and their menus were falling apart. We did have another acquaintance go earlier in the week and they waited over an hour to receive their meals without an apology or anything even simple understanding for the length of their wait. This truly is a place where they relay off location but honestly go anywhere else... there's a ton of delicious better service and experience places in town. read more

Was excited to try this place based on "good" reviews. Ordered takeout. Confusion at pickup but order was mostly correct. 1-2 people from our group of 6 were satisfied with their meal. 1. Cheesesteak egg rolls- good but not worth $15 2. Hatteras burger- it was decent. Asked for well done and it was cooked medium at best. 3. Angus burger- no complaints, it was good 4. Chicken Ceasar salad- very disappointing. Very small, like side salad sized. Lettuce included was brown. Dressing containers only half full. 5. Ceasar salad with crabcake- very disappointing. Crabcake was definately a pre packaged frozen crabcake, mostly filling, barely any crab. Also same complaints as other salad, plus stale croutons. 6. Truffle fries were fine. 7. She anticipated all of our needs almost immediately and was a joy to talk with. If you get a chance try the oysters which were very fresh. All of the drinks were top tier. Stopped here just today- a Sunday in the off season. No one to greet us, which was fine as we wanted to sit at the bar anyway. Sat ourselves and saw a man working the bar and a woman waitress no one acknowledged as in any way with two people at the bar and only three tables with people. The bartender proceeded to check the people out at the bar, get them a to go container and refill drinks without so much as a word to us or an acknowledgement that he'd be with us in a moment. After about 10 minutes of waiting and watching staff walk right by us, we left. I get it's the off season but they're clearly not that busy and the staff just doesn't give a sh*t. I can only imagine what the service is after we got food. Left and drove to Duck and had an amazing dining experience. I would t waste my time to go back. read more

We hadn't been to Fishbones in years. There was not much open in Duck on Monday nights, and we just happened to come upon it. What a treasure trove of food, ambience, and service! I had the scallops with a citrus sauce on truffle mashed potatoes with broccolini, and my husband had fried oysters with french fries and coleslaw. Both of us thought our meals were divine. Crystal was our server and she is top notch! She's the one who encouraged me to get the scallops because there are two new chefs here and they have been to culinary school in Kenya and they are creative and I can tell from my experience here, they are going far in their careers. We are just visiting Duck, NC but surprised to see only 3 stars for Fishbones. With post Covid times, the restaurant industry is having a tough time with hiring and retaining folks. This is even worse with unemployment $ being so much higher than normal. We were really impressed. The Ahi tuna appetizer was spectacular! Sorry I did not get a photo before we consumed it. It was 10 or so 1/2" thick rare slices about 5/8" wide and 2" long with three different sauces drizzled along the top. They were awesome! The calamari was very fresh and tender and had an aioli that was a perfect match. However, the absolute stand out was the shrimp and grits!! It had several cheeses including a smoked Gouda. Holy cow was that great! I did manage a photo of this. The Fishbone Lager was a great beer as well. Nice lager, not too hoppy. If you are in Duck NC, try this place, you'll like it. read more

We decided to go here for lunch because it was nearby and a raw bar...after ordering drinks and apps they tell us nothing on the raw bar is available because they were replacing their steamer. We didnt understand why raw oysters werent available simply because the steamer isnt. Waitress said she would go double check on raw but then never came back with an answer so we decided to just have the apps and nothing else. 2/4 people in our party felt sick after leaving because the calamari was so greasy. Fries tasted like the oil needed to be changed so overall not a great experience. A raw bar should really let you know as soon as you get there if they're unable to actually be a raw bar. We were looking for a spot with oysters while staying nearby for a quick weekend. The other menu options at Fishbones also had an appeal to the non-oyster fan (me) in our duo. Decided on appetizers so we could try more options and were pleased with each of the items we chose, for various reasons. First off - the oysters were very fresh, complimented classically well by the cocktail and horseradish. The coconut shrimp was my favorite. The coatings was truly coconut and a lovely crisp batter without the thick breading of some fried fish. The coconut dipping sauce truly made it though. Never have I had this combo but the sweet + savory and double coconut moved it up a level, for me. The ahi tuna was fresh, light and had a lovely sweet Chile sauce on top and an avocado + miso (or other spice) element underneath. Lovely thin cuts that were very easy for sharing. The tomato bruschetta was a step up from many spots with a menu item like this. The balsamic glaze is always a fav for this paring. The mozzarella was very fresh and tomatoes a nice mix of sliced and chutney style alongside the grilled baguette. Might have been nice to have more bread or small cheese slices to make it an easy combo to assemble and actually eat together. Definitely a fork and knife kind of item but tasty all the same. Service was friendly, attentive and the wait for our food was very reasonable. My only undesirable element to note was our seating by the back door along a window sill that was littered with many small dead bugs. I saw other live ones on the window as well, but the remnants of many that had not been cleaned was more noticeable. Aside from that - I'm sure outdoor dining or even more main seating areas may not have that issue. Only other thought is that I'd have loved to try the lobster and crab salad wrap with tarragon and truffle oil. I have a feeling given the balanced flavors of the other items and fresh, quality ingredients that this would also be a standout dish. read more

They re-did the interior last year to open things up and it is no longer the exact same menu as they have down at Sunset. Food choices were plentiful, service was friendly, and we'll definitely be back. It's one of two places in Duck (Sunset being the other) where you can just sit and order from a full selection of steamed or raw seafood. Sometimes when you're at the beach, that's what you feel like. I always ask if the seafood if local or not. Buy local! The menu items that we tried were very good. Fresh catch burrito was great. (could've been bigger) and the special ahi tuna salad was also very flavorful (I think it was frozen non-local tuna, forgot to ask). The conch chowder was unique, and I ended up really liking it. Nachos were good as well. When I asked about the menu she said everything is made in house. If you haven't been here in a while, they got rid of the large tiki roof that really darkened the place up. It's now wide open, light paint, tall ceilings. A nice place to relax. Prices are fair. read more

This place is a great little Bar/Restaurant! We were staying in Duck and wanted to go somewhere close because we had a 1year old with a short attention span and get hangry fast! We started with the warm crab dip with toasted pita points.... absolutely delicious! Then to our dinners 1. The Gouda Pork Belly Burger w/fries cooked perfectly and the sriracha bbq sauce was a great compliment..although the bun was a bit hard.. 2. Shrimp and Chicken linguini generous sized shrimp and chicken in a delicious garlic lemon sauce. 3. Children's menu Grilled Chicken with veggies (seasoned Broccoli) my 1 year old tore it up...& the star of the entire meal Shrimp and Grits... this was so good! Although it needs to be renamed....?its honestly more like a Shrimp and Grits stew or jambalaya... it needs to double the amount of grits and back off of the sauce (as delicious as it is) it's just too much gravy/broth/stew to eat with a fork .... would I eat it again damn straight! This is our third trip to fish bones. It's been five years since our last trip to the outer banks. To say this restaurant has changed would be an understatement. Before it was a casual restaurant that felt like a laid back place in an area full of more upscale fair. Even their menu has overgone a major overhaul. There is a big dynamic change between the lunch and dinner menu, and according to our waitress the chef will NOT cook anything from the lunch menu. For me that was their fried grouper sandwich, and because of the menu I could not get it. I can't say the food wasn't good because it was. Everyone in our party left full and happy, but for me it was bittersweet. 5 years ago this place was an easy 5/5, but thanks to the "modern" upgrading and upscaling I'm giving it a 4/5. read more

Probably won't be back here. The food was okay we got 3 appetizers the crab dip, bruschetta, and calamari. The crab dip was mostly cheese and very liquidy not much crab to said dip. The bruschetta was good thought but I don't know how you can mess up a bruschetta. Lastly the calamari was good it came with a mayo based sauce we didn't use but we love cocktail so we used that. The down fall was the service. The hostess wasn't friendly at all. We saw The waitress a total of 3x during the visit. For drinks, take the app order and the check. Waited forever to get served. We had a larger group so we decided to sit at the bar until our table was ready. Once we sat down, we waited around 25 minutes before we were helped. I don't think it was on the server however because she was great but it seems as if the host didn't tell her that it was her table and we were forgotten about. We are okay with that, but when they took us to our table, they divided us into two groups sitting on one side of two picnic tables that required us to look directly into the sun. Too many people (5) seated on one bench. Not able to have conversation. 85 degrees and humid with no space between us. Waitress was great. Food was great, but waited almost an hour for the appetizer and the food came out immediately after. Only request to eat inside here! Not a great experience overall.
