We have eaten here at least once in every annual trip we have made to the Outer Banks fir the last ten plus years. The best part of our lunch today was a great waitress named Michelle. The soups were just OK. The fish and chips was bland with a heavy crust. The fried shrimp was also bland. One of the worst experiences I have ever had at a restaurant. We had our server Aliyah who was absolutely fantastic, and I asked if there children's menu contains egg as my 12 month old son has an egg allergy. She let us know unfortunately the entire kids menu has eggs in the food, but stated she had a customer who also previously had a child with egg allergy, and they went to get them Pizzazz (shoutout). So my husband went and got my son pizza. As we are feeding my son this pizza the manager states that they cannot have outside food and walks away. We are confused at this point and our server stated it was okay. Then we have another person come to us and state we cannot have outside food, at this point I ask to speak to the original manager. I explain to her (this managers name is Cassidy) that my son has a severe allergic reaction to egg and peanut, and our server stated that all the food options on the kids menu contained eggs, so we got our son pizza. She then goes on to say that pizza has egg in it, and I explained that this pizza from Pizzazz does not. At this point we decide to pay for the appetizer and leave. Now although Aliyah was fantastic, this manager Cassidy was horrendous. Rude and entitled, I have absolutely never experienced service so poor. It was like she wanted me to take my infant outside to eat. We will never return here. There are much better places in Duck than this place. Also, if you have food allergies, do not bother coming- there are absolutely no accommodations for food allergies, especially for children. read more

Our family stopped in tonight on a rainy night with a party of 13. The food choices were excellent and all of us walked away satisfied. We did not have a good experience here. I had a hard time getting ahold of anyone on the phone, and then they gave the impression that taking our order was an inconvenience because they were "so busy." When we went in, they were not even at 50% capacity and only had a few people working. They were unable to use a Visa gift card. By the time we got out of there, our food was cold and soggy. This is one of our favorite stops when staying in Duck. The calamari is the best around. However this year there was a special posted for $16 and I asked if it was still available. The bartender checked and said yes. When we received our bill we were charged $29. I pointed out that it should have been $16 as posted on the special board. The bartender said it's after 6 so it's $29. It was a sorry but too bad attitude. The bartender is new so I give her some slack. But really no one could adjust the bill to reflect the $16. I was not told at anytime that the price would be different after 6. Fishbones is a regular stop for us several times during our stay but we did not go back after that. Just visiting and as a visitor one is more critical. We had appetizers and I also orders the clam chowder. Well that was the worst i have ever had. Very watery and it tasted like soap. We stopped by on a Saturday afternoon around 2:00pm in late September because we are ~those~ vacationers that had to find a restaurant/bar that could show our college football game. There were a few open tables but we asked to be seated at the bar. The hostess cleared us a spot far enough from the other customers without menus (which is fine because the menu was online and we weren't in a rush). It appeared the bartender was on bartending duty and also raw bar duty for the whole restaurant. When we got there, he had 6 trays of oysters to assemble and was clearly flustered. We waited probably 20 minutes before he was even able to say "sorry I'll be right with you". Which is totally not his fault but something to keep in mind if you're in a rush. Overall, the employees seemed FRAZZLED. I'm not sure if they were short staffed but I felt bad for them -- especially the bartender. I work in food service so I understand. It didn't seem that busy but again, I don't know their situation. We started with the Rubber Duck cocktail and one of the house slushie cocktails (in peach). Both were strong is very good. We later ordered the pomegranate margarita and another slushie (in cranberry). They were about $12-14 so pretty average for the area. For food, we started with the buffalo wings. For a seafood raw bar, they were fire. They were SUPER crispy and had a perfect amount of breading. Highly recommend. We also got a dozen oysters. They were just okay. We ended with the Mahi Sandwich (per some reviews on Google) and onion straws. It was meh. Like a 4/10. I wanted to like it based on the ingredients but it was just kind of mushy. The restaurant itself was a bit dirty feeling but for a beach shack style restaurant, it is kind of part of the territory. Once the crowd dissipated (around 4:00pm), the staff noticeably calmed down, took smoke breaks, and hydrated. A lot of them ended up just sitting at a table on their phones but they were super attentive to us still. Overall, if/when we go back to Duck, it isn't a place we will rush back to. Our kids got the kids pizza. Both of them thought it tasted weird. My husband got nachos. He said they were good but from my perspective without tasting they looked like the cheese was skimped on. I had a Burger with garlic basil pesto, tomatoes and mozzarella. When I ordered I said no bun and add lettuce so I can use it as the bun to wrap my burger. What came out was a slightly burned meat patty, 2 large leafs of lettuce and a sliced tomato. None of the other things that made the sandwich sound good. Being Thanksgiving week, it took us awhile to find a place that was open for eat-in. Fishbones, located in the Scarborough Faire shops, did not disappoint. We came in with a party of 9 on a Monday evening. The decor of the place isn't bad but the cacophony of loud ringing phones leaves something to be desired in terms of ambience. We were seated right away, but that's when any attempt by restaurant staff at promptness ended. Honestly, it seems like it was our servers first night. Our server brought over 2 drinks at a time, despite the fact we could see them sitting on the bar...we ordered 3 appetizers and eventually 2 of the 3 arrived. We didn't have any plates, so we had to ask. Our server brought us 4 plates. My sister had to ask for "a plate for everyone." After waiting a while, we asked about the 3rd app we ordered, to which our server responded, "it's coming right out." Then I watched him go over and put the order in. 10 or so mins later it came out. The appetizers were actually pretty good. The crab dip was yummy and had lots of crab and the spinach and artichoke dip was good too. We all agreed that the pita crisps were the highlight. Our food came out kind of piecemeal, ala our drinks. My mom got a seafood linguine that came out played pretty messily. Several others ordered the catch of the day (mahi or tuna). Our server had no idea which was which. When I finally got the right plate in front of me and attempted to cut into my mahi, I knew something was wrong. It was overcooked to oblivion...think: canned tuna. My dad got the same and his was also overcooked. It was gross and we both asked for new filets. Our server came back out and said "the chef says you have to cook mahi well." Combative, much? After explaining that I understand and that this particular mahi was not just cooked to well-done, but overcooked, the manager or owner brought us each two new pieces of perfectly cooked fish. She apologized and said the fish had sat in the window for a while and got overcooked. I appreciate that they made our fish orders right, but our waiter was absolutely terrible. Came here for lunch on a weekday with a large group. There weren't any free tables large enough, so we sat at the bar. I got the fry basket with fried oysters, and also tried the raw oysters, raw clams, nachos, and truffle fries. I had the heirloom tomato salad, presentation was nice but very disappointing, the tomatoes were just cherry tomatoes (not heirloom unless cherry tomatoes from Harris Teeter are. After a bad lunch here 2 years ago, we gave Fishbones a second chance at the start of our recent trip to Duck, only because our rental house wasn't ready yet; And it was the only place within walking distance that was a) serving food and b) showing the World Cup final. When we arrived there were no good tables left, so the hostess told our party of 8 to grab seats at the bar, including the kids. When the bartender stopped by, he told us we shouldn't have kids at the bar because it was reserved for "drinking customers" Geez...Get your story straight folks. (We eventually found a nearby table for the kids.) Our experience: As before, the food here continues to be mostly sub-par. (The beer and cocktail list, however, was fine.) The only standouts were the buffalo wings (hard to make these wrong); Also, my curried chicken salad was just fine. The crab dip (recommended by the bartender) was terrible - the worst I've ever had. Speaking of the bartender - Mr. Bad Attitude was working hard, and letting everyone know about it (to generate more tips?); but all his high drama wore thin with us quickly; He also forgot orders regularly; He complained aloud whenever anyone ordered a Mojito (more time consuming to make) and was a downer in general. The crab legs were tasty (a little small cluster for $10, but it is Duck). The prime rib sandwich was good. They have TVs so we were able to catch World Cup while we waited for lunch. The negatives - the kid's menu is pretty week. The kid's penne & marinara is actually spaghetti, which is fine, but for $7 you just get some basic pasta without a side item or a drink. The waters were bad - warm and no ice. Bad water is not a good start :) the service was slow and poor. I asked for water with lemon and the server forgot the lemon. That happens a lot, but usually a sign of service issues to come. The pasta came out cold and it took a while for each request (e.g., extra napkins). The restaurant is pretty small and it was busy, so you are packed together. Overall, for $50 lunch (3 adults, 2 kids) I would choose a different option. Not a memorable vacation meal. read more
