I mean the fries were some of the best tasting fries I've had but they are literally the most expensive fries I've ever had too. HAT CREEK has burgers for 4 dollars, you can get an entire whatburger meal , burger , fries, and a drink all for less then just the price of a burger here. I mean $20 bucks for 1 burger and 1 order of fries. It's crazy because if it was slightly more reasonable prices we would eat here maybe 5X more per month but now because I remember how over priced it is , I won't be going back at all. I pulled into Costco to purchase some dog food (yes I got priorities:) on my way home and saw the "NOW OPEN" signs for Five Guys in the same lot and did a loop back. The staff was super friendly and my burger and fries did their intended job. I was fueled with enough energy to haul in a 50 LB bag of dog food and take over 100 Lbs worth of dogs on a walk... Great food, as always...but no mask requirement? The staff were wearing masks but no signs on the door requiring patrons to wear a mask. I could understand if we were in Lubbock or Abilene. This is South Austin, why no mask requirement for customers? There's also no curbside delivery. So even if I call in an order I have to go inside to pick it up and potentially be exposed if another customer decides not to follow CDC guidelines. I was immediately taken aback by the big sign in the window announcing: "Best $5 burger a man can eat. GQ" Uh, ok. I looked down, noticed my breasts, and wondered whether I, too, could find hamburger heaven here. Despite not having the required accoutrements, I wandered in and was pummeled by loud 70's rock and not the good kind. My mood was worsening, particularly when I saw the sign announcing "all burgers cooked well-done". (Signaling not only that they like really like signage but also that they don't trust that their meat won't kill ya if it is exposed to anything less than a torching, Not a confidence building statement.) At the counter, an incredibly nice and helpful young man explained the joint to me, after I confessed to being a first-timer. His exuberance erased my irritation immediately as he explained the set up. He told me that the small burger was "almost" a quarter pound. Since at fast food places, a quarter pound burger is perfect, I opted for the small. He also told me all sorts of wonderful toppings were free. I like it! $3.69 for a cheeseless, veggie-laden "almost quarterpounder" burger seemed like a good deal. I also asked that my burger be cooked "medium" because I hate a dry cardboardy burger. He apologized, said that it would be impossible, but that he would try to see that the burger wasn't killed. Awesome. After a very short wait, I got my burger and opted to eat outside. Although I am a child of the 70's, this music reminded me way too much of bad clubs with ferns and guys with perms and leisure suits and Trans Ams. Yikes. So, I took a bite. "Almost" quarter pound is definitely less than "almost", as the patties are pretty thin and more like about 3 ounces is my bet. I can't imagine 2 is really half a pound. Maybe that much grease fries off in the cooking process? Anyway, the meat is thin and like others said, was totally unseasoned. It needed salt. The veggies, on the other hand, were fantastic. Crisp lettuce, tomato, onions and pickle and even a few mushrooms made me smile. The burger was not dry at all, and I was happy I had brought a few napkins outside because it was a nice drippy burger and not just with grease. Yum. The bun was perfectly soft, but held up just right to the veggies and the burger. All in all, it was probably the best William Cannon burger I've had and it really should be a three and a half star burger. If you would like to hear the pot heads behind the counter talk about smoking dope at concerts as they mess your food up, then this is your place! I walked to the door and there was a hand written sign stating that they would open at 11:30am, 30 minutes after their regular opening time. Went there for the first time to cure a hangover. Didn't like the smell when I walked in, like peanut oil. I don't like it when it's a burger place but it doesn't come with fries and drink. They charge you separately for everything, which would be fine if it was awesome special truffle fries or a fancy drink but the fries were just fries. They were ok. We got a medium and split them. This place is always consistent which I love. Always cooked fresh and they always overflow your fries. I usually get the jr burger with everything except onions and also Cajun fries. They use super fresh ingredients/toppings and I love that they have grilled onions as an option. The Downside - Only White bun options - no Whole Wheat - One kind of cheese: American - if you call that cheese... have these folks ever heard of Swiss, cheddar, etc.? Made an order online outside of the restaurant, waited about 15-20 minutes and went inside to check food, they asked who my order was for, then I saw the man go back to the counter to read off all of the orders they were backed up on. APPEARED to be 5-8 orders. They were not doing an ounce of work when I waalked in the store, laughing about sitting around, the grills weren't hot, oil had to warm up. It's a head-scratcher... It looks like meat. Kind of smells like meat. Seems like a decent amount of flesh. But after the first couple of bites, the husband and I kept wondering...(here it comes...you know someone had to say it..), where's the beef? I can't explain it; we tasted the bun, we tasted the tomatoes (well, kinda..not exactly farm freshy). I got a little of the mustard, and even enough of the mushrooms to know they were bland. But no meat flavor, not even a char taste. Now you can get excited about toppings all you want, but they do not a burger make. So we don't overload with additions, and therefore I don't see how the hamburger managed to taste like nothing but toppings and bread. I pulled off a small amount of the flesh to see what the heck was a'goin' on, and it was still more like the memory of beef. What did we do, steam the meat before slapping it on a grill for color? And let me introduce you to a bit of a mineral called NaCl, as I see you've never heard of it before. The fries were pretty delish, however. Glad I ordered the small as I wasn't aware at the time that they believe in an avalanche of french fries. One strange aside: the chairs are painted and textured to look like, oddly, a fake plastic wood, but they're actually metal. I'm just trying to wrap my brain around that one. That being said, if you're one to give this place anything higher than 3 stars, your reviews for other places have just gone down several stars for me. Stay with me for the moment if it occurs to you that what they're doing at Five Guys isn't particularly revolutionary -- a handful of burger options, variety of fixings available, one patty or two, regular fries or Cajun fries (and I suppose that's different), a few sodas. Happy people. There's not much to be said for the accoutrements here, the design by burger joint committee decor, but give them this -- if the folks who work here aren't happy, they sure do an amazing job of faking it. Cause it was smiles for miles when we popped in to solve a burger jones last week. Whether we're talking about a smattering of small table setups or long and extended benches doesn't matter to me much, and truth be told, I couldn't tell a ton different from the burger I had here (two patties, natch) as opposed to the burgers I've had at some of the other places around town that I dig just fine. The burgers themselves are smallish (think about as big around as what you'd get at P Terry's), so opting for double patties may help you get to a full place if you arrive with an appetite for culinary destruction. Would I head back? Sure, and I really did get a kick out of the positive vibe the employees were giving off: that kind of thing matters. But at the end of the day, with some exceptions, a burger may be just a burger, and that's where I've started here. read more

This place should really be renamed to Five Stars. My brother and I ordered Five Guys last night for dinner, and let me just say that the food is exceptional. My burger (although very messy but that's only because I got lots of toppings on it since I'm a not-plain-food kind of girl), was super delicious and filled me up! I was so hungry before the burger, and after I ate it I was full for hours! Only problem was I didn't get cheese, but that's on me because I forgot to order it (oops)! But to make up for it (besides the zillions of toppings), I made a happier mistake by accidentally getting three patties instead of two. I didn't realize by default the burger I ordered came with two patties so I chose the option to add another patty. But I'm not complaining about that. I was hungry anyway so it was a good thing. And let me just say that Five Guys is REALLY generous with their fries. My brother and I both got Cajun fries, and they were spilling out of the cup into the bag! Errm mah guuurrddd so good! Man that burger was cooked perfect, it had this little layer of crispy char on the outside of the patties and meaty goodness on the inside. The fries were well seasoned and crispy and the cashier/cook was adorable with his perfect eyelashes and cute barbell earring! I had never been to Five Guys before my recent visit. I've always been told, "LIKE OMG THEY HAS THE BESTEST BURGERS EVER" by several people and have even seen a positive review autotuned on YouTube. Apparently there's hype, so I went to see what all the fuss was about. Come to find out, the place is pretty simple. The decor is basically snippets from "BEST STUFF EVER" food critic quotes. OK, so they're really proud of their stuff. The lady at the counter greeted us with a smile and was patient with my first time there. I enjoyed the options and the simplified menu. You just pick your burger, what you want on it, and whatever fries you want. I have to admit, I was a little saddened to not see any shakes on the menu- but then again, the sign says "Five Guys Burgers & Fries," not, "Five Guys Burgers, Fries & Shakes." It didn't take too long for our order to come out (I appreciate places that cook your burger when you order it). We were taking it home and the lady at the counter gave us tips on what to do in the event the fries get cold. I've never had someone give us advice on good-results reheating before, so that was kind of cool. Thankfully, we live pretty close so they didn't get cold. I ordered a single patty burger w/bacon, cheese, & sauteed onions. The flavors themselves were pretty good overall. The bun was a sesame seed bun, which is great- however, the top half of the bun was pretty thick to where my burger was a little more bready than I like. I suspect if I had gotten the double patty, it would've been more appropriate. The menu states they do bunless burgers, so I'll probably try that next time because I really do appreciate the flavors of the beef and toppings. Now, I can admit I've probably had better burgers- but the fries? That's a bit of a different story. Those fries are completely awesome. They are filling and are actually potatoey instead of grease-sticks you get at a normal fast food restaurant. I was able to save some for another meal and still have them come out great when reheated. Imagine doing that with those sad excuses for spuds you get in the drive through- not gonna happen. Within a few miles of this location, you have a choice between P Terry's, Mighty Fine, Red Robin and Five Guys. I normally gravitate towards the local establishments, but having never been a big fan of P Terry's and having not found Red Robin or Mighty Fine much to write home about, I was hoping for a winner with Five Guys. You know a place is good if you come back less than a week from your first experience. As continued from my previous review, I didn't quite find the two guys that would have made the restaurant's name mathematically accurate. However, at the counter there was a friendly female employee that announced that we were here so that the workers in the back could start our fries. (I love the fact that their fries are made fresh.) She asked if we would like a cup of water while we waited, genuinely caring that we were comfortable while our fries were frying. Ten minutes later, and my boyfriend was munching on his cheeseburger, and I was working on the kosher hot dog with crispy pickles and warm, delicious onions all slipped between a hot bun and juicy sausage. I'm thinking their logo should be "Five Guys, Consistent And Wise." Consistent in the flavor and crispy fries, one order of which my boyfriend and I split. I kinda feel bad writing a less than stellar review, but honesty is key, right?? I want to like 5 Guys, I mean all this hype is gotta be worth something... I just cant seem to agree with those who seem to love this place. From the moment I walk in this location, it's small and cramped feeling. Ok, ok, just aesthetics. But no, unfortunately, that's one of my issues: the food is cooking 15 feet away, so all the burning fat and gristle smell just fills the air. Actually doesn't smell good to me at all, and I love the smell of a BBQ. Ok, smell is one thing, maybe it tastes better. Nope, the smell IS the way the meat tastes. Just a rather bland piece of meat. It does taste freshly cooked and prepared, but that's it. No seasoning I could discern and it seemed, wet?? Ok, it's grease, but so much more than I've ever seen on a actually non-fast food burger. Fries, like 'em, but hey, they are potatoes, and are usually the only good part of so many not so good meal experiences, so can't give too much credit to 5 Guys for the effort the potato put in. Really, I just think too much hype, not enough constructive criticism, is the unfortunate existence of this place. Actually that was one of the 1st thoughts I had when I first entered due to all the publicity paraphernalia on the walls. Just IMHO. I give 3 stars for the up beat feeling of the guys working here. My first Five Guys experience was a few months ago when I moved to Austin at the mid-town location. I wasn't blown away like I thought I would be, especially with all the praise it got from my friends. The burgers basically taste like soggy dough and salt. Their fries aren't that great either. And every time I eat there my heart races and I get the meat-sweats; I sorta feel like I'm going to die. So I definitely went into this location with a little skepticism. My biggest gripe with the place so far is the size and layout. I'm sure in a month or two when the buzz of a new place wears off it'll be a little more manageable, but right now it's way too small, crowded and inefficient. I know everyone working there is still in training so they get a free pass this time. But the first time I ordered my burger took 15 minutes to come out after the girl at the register told me it'd take 5. Normally it would've been just a minor inconvenience, but I had to be somewhere and ended up having to wait an hour before I could eat (at this point a slimy grease ball I could only stomach a few bites of). On top of the long wait, they got my order wrong. I came back the next day and talked to the manager who refunded my bill and gave me a burger on the house. I checked in once and will NEVER check in again. I decided to try Five Guys since somewhere I heard it was comparable to the famous In & Out Burger chain of California, Nevada, and Arizona. Trust me, it is not, and those who claim that it is have obviously not been to In-N-Out. Raunchy food and overpriced best describe my experience at Five Guys. The cheeseburger with ketchup, mustard, onions, tomatoes and lettuce was average- nothing special about it. The sesame seed bun that one wall article claimed was goodness wasn't anything more than what you can buy in the bread aisle of your local grocery store. The french fires - yuck, yuck, yuck! The worst. Disgusting. Whoever named these the "best french fries" as the wall proclaimed was smoking crack. These are horrible tasting French fries and the portion size was obscene. Finally, let's talk about price. $11.12 for a cheeseburger, regular size french fries and a regular drink. Are you kidding me? I could go to a full-service, sit down restaurant like TGI Fridays or Chilis and order the same thing for less. Next time I'm in the mood for a hamburger I'm going to go to In-N-Out or if I'm trapped in Austin without my first choice then I'll go to McDonald's instead.
