With so much burger competition around these days, you'd expect to get a great slider for $12. But, in burger world price and quality do not necessarily go hand in hand. Rather than across the board improvement at lower cost, the opposite seems to be true. There are alot of pretenders out there willing to take your money and deliver disappointing product. Five Guys seems to be following this path. When I stopped in their store in Flemington, NJ, recently, everything was clean and spiffy, the workers friendly and chatty, but their burger just not up to snuff, especially at the near $15 with their bag-O-fries and soft drink. Grease is an essential element of a good burger, but this double patty was so slick it overwhelmed the taste of the beef. Too, ordering this with all their standard fixing (lettuce, tomato, onion, ketchup and mayo), made for so much lubrication that holding onto the bun firmly resulted in much of the internals extruding from the sides of the sandwich, and a firm bite launched part of the puck out the back door into the basket beneath. From second bite it was just a slippery mess to eat. Even with their cheap plastic forks, it became a pile of deconstructed ugliness, best consumed with fingers and spoon. It was impossible to enjoy, and I lost count of the napkins yanked to keep the leakage off my face and fingers. Maybe this was on me for ordering their "all the way" fixings on top of their regular double grease burger. If so, I've learned a lesson not to accept their marketing suggestions. I've also learned that Five Guys isn't worth the mess it makes.

Only my second trip a Five Guys....from what I gather you either get it or don't. It's obvious there are waaaay too many friggin hamburger shops on the planet right now. I mean how many ways can you present a Burger and fries??? I hear their shakes are good...although, I have not had one yet. Perhaps next time...if you eat here enough I'm pretty sure you won't fit through the door! I ordered a double cheese with bacon, mushrooms and jalapeño. Honestly small fries would have been enough since regular is overflowing into the bag and already seems to be the average size of a large order as compared to places I've been. The bag soaks up the grease, it's visable. I guess that's why one of the previous reviewers called them a "Greasy Spoon".... so dumb. What were they expecting? It's FAST FOOD !!!!! :-) Back to the burger...It was AWESOME...JUICY, HOT AND THICK.. MMMMMM Anyway, the addition of malt vinegar on the fries and I'm in heaven. I will be back!.... some day.

Double bacon cheeseburger and the best fries ever.

A short walk later, I found myself at Destination Dogs, a place I had seen in photographs that suggested capaciousness. In reality, it is smaller.  This is not a complaint, just an observation.  I remember once hearing something about the contents of small packages. At 12:30 the place was full. Packed with humanity and appetite. I was seated quickly, as if someone had anticipated my hunger in advance. From the bar came the sound of construction crews discussing their midday rituals. Apparently this is where they come on Fridays, to repair themselves while they repair the city. It explained everything. Service was swift and attentive, a minor miracle given the crowd. I began with a Scotch egg, an item that seemed to have wandered in from another story entirely. I ordered it for that reason. I had always imagined my first Scotch egg would be eaten in an English pub under low ceilings and older regrets. Instead, here it was. Perfectly crisp, warm, and generous. The universe does not ask for permission. Then came the main event. The menu is an atlas of hot dogs. Domestic. International. Proteins in tube form arranged like possibilities. There is even an invitation to build your own, which I accepted. I attempted to recreate a favorite from Crif Dogs, a thing called the Spicy Redneck. Bacon wrapped dog. Pickled jalapenos. Coleslaw. Simple in theory. Destination Dogs improved upon it in every way that matters. The bacon crisped with purpose. The jalapenos spoke clearly. The coleslaw behaved. The hot dog itself seemed proud to be there. All of this, plus a 16 ounce beer, cost me about twenty five dollars with tip. A small price for order in a chaotic universe. Five stars. Not because perfection exists, but because this comes close enough to make the argument.

After taking the drive to Lahaska, we were looking for a vegetarian friendly bite to eat before wandering around and stumbled across Top Dog. This tiny shop keeps it simple with a menu of dogs and fries: plain, Chicago style, Seattle style et al, and any dog can be made with a veggie sausage. We both got a veggie dog (hers with sauerkraut, mine with kimchi) and a pickle spear, and split an order of crispy fries. The dogs were better than expected, with nice savory notes, while the kimchi brought the bite. The owner was very friendly and more than happy to accommodate

It's not often that I crave hot dogs, but something about a hot dog on a hot summer day just seemed right, and Top Dog definitely delivered. Their menu was longer than I imagined a hot dog place being, with various toppings and combinations to try. I was surprised to hear about the two different sizes of hot dog, along with the option of a chicken dog and a veggie dog. They're really accommodating to everyone who enters! When stating that it was our first time in, the one staff member excitedly explained the entire menu to us and informed us that if there was something we liked/didn't like for any option, she would be able to custom make a creation for us. You could really tell that she loved her job, making us even more excited to have a bite of the hot dogs. We opted for the Memphis Dog and it was such a great snack to hold us over while we walked around Peddler's Village. I love the shop and wish them much success, as I know anyone who enters will love them just as much as we did!
