After a 2 year hiatus becuz of a bad experience, I decided to try again with a visit to try another burger. It was worth while! Had a single cheese burger with 4 toppings--it was hot with a soft bun. I ordered two grilled cheese sandwiches with tomatoes and grilled mushrooms. The guy got my order right on the ticket and made the sandwiches himself so I assumed my food was fine. WRONG! When I got home, there were tomatoes on each but instead of grilled mushrooms, each sandwich had a huge pile of grilled onions. I HATE onions. I entered this restaurant at 5:45. There were no customers. There was no staff. I called out, "anyone here?". Four employees came out of the back. I ordered a hamburger and fries and went to pay the $15.64 with a credit card. The credit card terminal charged me $18.64. I asked what happened. The cashier explained that the terminal sometimes automatically charges a tip. I said I didn't intend to leave a tip and wanted a refund. They refused to cancel the transaction or refund the $3. Pretty typical Five Guys experience. I was craving a burger and I had a coupon for Five Guys. The cashier who took my order was friendly. The burger, as is usually the case at Five Guys, seemed to take an unreasonably long time to make. When I got it, the burger was alright, about what I expected. This Five Guys location on Palmetto Bay Road on Hilton Head Island is a good Five Guys stop that has delicious and well prepared burgers and fries. This just might be the slowest Five Guys I've ever been to! The food was okay, but they were definitely under staffed the day we had lunch here. Geez! I'm not sure why I feel compelled to defend this particular location of Five Guys. It is most likely nearly identical to any other Five Guys you have ever visited, but this one seems to have undeservedly earned itself a 2 star rating, for reasons we shall discuss momentarily. Although it is doubtful that 85% of the population of Hilton Head Island ever heard of Yelp, at least 3 people have, two of who raise some rather dubious concerns with their 1 star ratings. The first concern is the accents of the staff at this establishment. While I do admit that South Carolina accents can be hard to understand, I'm sure with a little listening practice you might find them a bit more intelligible. Everyone on Hilton Head seems to have some sort of accent, usually a New York or Midwest accent, so we should try to be tolerant. My server today spoke English perfectly and Spanish just as well. 2 points for her because my Spanish is a little rusty. The 2nd negative review concerned the size of the fries, which the reviewer felt was skimpy. I received a second bag with my order of 4 burgers today, which was exclusively for the fries (literally), so either the previous reviewer was a lot hungrier than I will ever be or maybe I need to practice eating my weight in fries to be satisfied. That said, our burgers were fresh and delicious. I would actually venture to say there were way too many fries but that's just me. It was refreshingly environmental to get take out in SC that was not triple wrapped in styrofoam, although they did include 100 napkins as compensation. read more

UPDATE: I reached out to corporate to share my bad experience and to let them know they should do a health code check on this store since illness was involved. I got a phone call a few days later and was told they'd follow up with me because they were "investigating." I believe this was from the SC/Hilton Head store itself, because they told me the corporate office would also give me a call. And... haven't heard a peep. I send a request for a refund through their corporate website and... nothing. No follow up whatsoever. I guess their customer service is just as lousy as their food. Please take my word for it (4th year of Yelp elite - over 350 honest, unbiased reviews) and skip Five Guys when running through your dining options. read more

Was given a pathetic amount of fries for a regular order (not even a full cup with literally a baby's handful of additional fries dumped into the bag -- picture was taken in disbelief, I can provide it if the owner so desires) Inquired with the on duty manager (Anthony) and was told that only six additional fries are provided above and beyond the "cup" of fries. I tried to politely tell him that must be a mistake as I am a frequent visitor to the Arlington, VA location; as I've been informed, the flagship for the franchise, and I have never received anything less than a small fortune of fries to accompany a burger. There is an enormously lettered sign, directly next to the cash registers that reads: "The most bang for your buck." I even had Anthony read it aloud back to me, but apparently the point I was trying to make was not clear. Not only did the manager (Anthony) and his staff become confrontational ([his staff began] wringing his hands as if he wanted to physically accompany his displeasure with my complaint) but they directed me to leave the store when I asked for business cards associated with the upper management and ownership of the establishment. If you have just driven down the eastern seaboard, for say 10+hours, and you are famished, might I suggest trying literally any other food service on or around the island. 0/10 I've had a tradition of coming to this specific spot in Hilton Head, as my first meal of my vacation for countless years, and this is the first time I've encountered such confrontational and disrespectful attitudes from the staff. read more

Stopped at this Five Guys twice now after a couple intense days of tennis. It is what you can expect from their burgers and fries. Juicy and delicious, crispy and well seasoned. One of my daughter's had a burger at the Salty Dog for lunch and said the Five Guys burger was hands down much better. It was also a much better value, quality for price you can't beat it. The music was a little loud on a tuesday night and one of kitchen workers was singing away, which was fun, but it would have been nice to hear one another without raising our voices at the table. I have being going to Five Guys right from the very beginning of their operation in Alexandria , Virginia. Yes I know a Great Five Guys having being a loyal customer for many years. Their burgers are so delicious, they give you a ton of fries, but the Coca-Cola freestyle machine makes every drink taste terrible. I just want a classic Coke, but it always tastes like root beer. Ugh! I would be thrilled if they brought back the standard soda fountain machines. read more
