I asked very politely for two orders of fries, one cajun and one regular extra crispy. What I got was one order of fries, limp and soggy. I ordered two veggie burgers (meatless burgers, we're all familiar with those these days, right?) What I got was two hamburger buns loaded with mushrooms ( I told them not to give me mushrooms because I hate mushrooms), tomato, fried onions and mayo, when I told them to hold the mayo. The food was gross. There was no meatless patty (Beyond burger or some relative), it simply wasn't there. I asked the guy at the counter, "Hey, is this a burger? Or is it something else?" Five Guys. Never knew they even existed until i saw an article in the LA Times about some other-state competitor to our beloved In-n-Out here in the Golden State. Then, i noticed that they were opening locations all over the area. Yesterday, i noticed they opened up a new location right here in Downtown near the USC area. Great, i thought, i can get some lunch and see what the whole fuss is about When you enter the restaurant, you are met with an onslaught of news clippings and quote posters of various media outlets that sing the wonders of the Five Guys. Like what Michael K said, i got the feeling that they wanted to try and lure the In-n-Out faithful away with their messages of praise i noticed the peanuts. i mean, you can't really avoid them since they are everywhere... on the floor, on the tables, inside boxes and baskets... i love peanuts, but i felt that the concept of leaving empty peanut carcasses over the floor seemed... lazy? Not only that, there was a huge wall of peanut oil boxes and potato bags that composed the barrier that separated the patrons who were standing in the order queue and those who were already eating their food. i dunno... just seemed pretty odd to me i finally get to the counter and give a good glance at the myriad of topping options for the burger. i was intrigued that they'd offer A-1 sauce as a condiment, so why the heck not! i got meself a bacon burger with some fixings and A-1. i also ordered their cajun fries for good measure Whilst you wait around for your order, the good folks of Five Guys are busy shouting out the numbers of those orders that are completed. i was surprised at the lung capacity of the ladies there! haha. It reminded me of eating at Shin Sen Gumi. Every so often, someone is yelling something After my number was called out, i got it and proceeded to partake in the Five Guys experience. Sadly, however, someone was careless in wrapping my burger, because it all came flying out into the paper bag when i picked it up from the wrapper. It was a Homer "d'oh!" kinda moment, but then, it shouldn't have been so. i gingerly picked out the burger and its spewed innards from the bag and reconstructed it on the aluminium foil. NOW~ came the moment of truth and... underwhelming. i do first of all realise that they state on their menu that they cook all their patties well-done, but regardless of how you cook it, there must be the other factor involved: taste. It wasn't seasoned at all. Dry and bland. Hamburger anathema. Adding unto the disappointment was the near lack of A-1 sauce. i didn't ask for other condiments because i feared the strong taste of A-1 would overwhelm the others. Alas, like my burger patties, i could barely taste the sauce The bacon? Dry and small... almost the same as the ones they give you at Jack in the Box If the burger was that disappointing, i wondered how i'd feel about the fries. With fries, i would say that it is even more personally subjective but wow... fried to **** and uneven coating of the cajun seasoning This was probably the first time a VERY long time that i felt like i didn't get my money's worth from food. i'm quite a forgiving, easy-going person with food, but i was upset at how much i spent and how hungry i still felt after this experience. The whole kaboodle cost me almost $13. With that money, i can easily buy one full combo and another burger from their "competitor" and still have some little scratch left over i wasn't on a vendetta to try and prove that In-n-Out was better; i had good expectations that i'd be getting a quality burger. i mean, if you are to be called a competitor to something/someone, you should match them. We went to a concert and because it was a long show, we were hungry when we got to the car. We'd heard all the hype about Five Guys and thought why not, it's 5 mins away so let's go! Well, I'm so sorry but it's not better than In N Out and we were not at all impressed. The burger had no seasoning, the bacon no flavor and the mayo, lettuce & pickles did not help. The bun was good. Now for the fries, can we say yuck!!! Greasy, soggy, salty and tasteless. We enjoyed the service but not the food, oh and it was pricey and not worth the money..... $30 for 2 burgers, 2fries and 2 drinks?! THIRTY??? Yep I fell for it. The hype on this burger caught my attention. Could it be true, a burger that blows In-&-Out burgers out of the water? Could these 5 guys put my animal style to shame? My first clue should have been the list of toppings. When a restaurant, any restaurant, starts giving you lots of options it means they haven't mastered the simplicity of a good food item. It's like those restaurants that have a 10 page menu. Everything's pretty mediocre and nothing stands out BUT when a restaurant has a 1 page menu with a small list that's guts! Ok so I went for the little cheeseburger with bacon, a little steak sauce and grilled onions along with the other list of regular toppings (tomato, lettuce, pickles, ketchup, mustard, etc). To spice it up I tried their cajun fries. Not too shabby. The verdict: Too pricey for a burger that tastes homemade. The toppings end up making it soggy and squishy. The fries? I'll come back for the fries. All in all an ok burger with good fries just not that good when you end up paying that much. read more

The most memorable part about the burger was a very large burger. The burger tries to be a gourmet burger as well as a fast food burger. However, it falls short of excelling in either category. It approaches the size of a gourmet burger, but has the taste of a fast food burger. The size of the burger proves to be its downfall. The first few bites are good, but towards the end I just wanted to get it over with. However, I give them credit for their Cajun Fries. I really liked the seasoning that they used. My recommendation would be to try them with ranch or Tzatziki sauce. I definitely recommend trying Five Guys, but as for my go to place for burgers? I'll pass. read more

Since there is no in-n-out near USC and the habit is too far from where I am living this summer, my only option is five guys. So when I felt hungry, I went here. When I got here, I immediately noticed the long line. I am not in love with long lines but it was here so whatever. Grilled cheese is a burger without meat. Finally tried Five Guys today. I don't know why everyone compares them to In N Out because they really don't have much in common other than the decor of the store and branding. I feel like my first experience doesn't quite match my last experience here. The first time I tried a Five Guys burger was a pretty amazing moment. It was different, it was new, it was quality. Now the allure has worn off. I still enjoy the taste and quality of the burger and the fries don't get me wrong. I think they are almost on par with In and Out. In and out has just had 70 years to practice and be consistent. Five Guys not as long. I do like that you can customize the ever living guts of your burger. And malt vinegar on the side. Yes please! Their fries trump In and Out though. By a lot. Plus they got one of those soda machines that allows you to have Vanilla Raspberry diet Pepsi ginger ale if you so desire (and everything isn't out yet). Worth a try at least once. read more

I like all things fried and all kinds of foods so I sat there taking bites of my mediocre burger thinking, "Where did I go wrong?" I'm glad I decided to give it a second try and this time order a burger the way I wanted with mayo, onions and some kind of white cheese if they had that. OMG. So much better. BF got one the way he liked too so we were both happy ducks. I love their hi-tech soda machine; I could stand there all day and taste the different sodas but the people in the back were complaining =/ They even have Mello Yello which is what my cousins loved in Japan. The big burger debate between In-N-Out and Five Guys on which is better. I think they're both delicious, but I'd have to favor Five Guys since its conveniently located closer to campus. There aren't any combos, they have the list of toppings and you just choose which ones you want at no extra cost. The Cajun fries are the best! The only downside is that it's a little more expensive than In-N-Out, around $5 a burger. This location is fairly big inside and its nice and clean. They decorate the walls with blown up reviews of their restaurant from magazines. They also offer peanuts to snack on while you wait. read more

This place was super crowded around peak lunch hours. My burger didn't taste the same as it did. They still gave me tons of fries, but they were sort of greasy. I didn't like how there were so many people standing/eating inside. I felt like people were too close to me and my food. I never asked for a "Little Burger" and that was what I got. I guess it was a good choice (made by her) since that little burger filled me up. The fries we're delicious and fresh. The cooks were very quick in getting every ones orders out and made to perfection. $10.00 for the amount of food and calories consumed was an okay price. 4 stars overall, perhaps if the girl had not made a "hurry up" face I would have given this place a 5 star. I thought this place was amazing. The burger was off the charts, and the cajun fries offered a little bit of kick to what were already delicious potatoes. Plus, I loved the selection of toppings for the burgers. Note to most: The "little" versions of things are still decent-sized, and for a normal sized female, they provided more than enough as a meal. Also, there are free peanuts! I found parking to be a snap in the area. There was plenty of free street parking, and there was also a lot further down the side street as well. I will say this location does come across a little divey, but it's in the USC area, so what else should you expect. I'm from DC, the home of Five Guys, and I've got to say, it's a remarkable burger. The "$$" label (meaning $10+ per person) is ridiculous -- a cheese burger there is about $6.50. A "burger" is actually a double burger (easily 1/3 lb of meat) and is made of really high quality ingredients. You can expect to pay a little more than a Wendy's burger, but that is accounted for by the high quality of what you're buying. Especially near USC, a reknowned shithole of an area of Los Angeles with nothing even close to approximating good food, drink, or culture nearby, this is the best thing on the map. My favorite is a burger with A-1 sauce, sauteed mushrooms, cheese, grilled onions. It's dope. read more

My fiancee and I decided to try this location since we loved the food coming from the Cerritos location so we figured it would be the same thing. We were wrong....at first. This location opened sometime last year so when we tried it when it first opened, the burgers weren't as good. They did improve a lot since then though. I usually get the little bacon cheeseburger since I can't handle the two patties. I'm always filling up on the free refills. And peanuts! Yup, they have peanuts while you wait. That's pretty awesome. If you do stop by, make sure to try the cajun fries. Great Freaking Burger. Had their Bacon Cheeseburger (big burger) with everything on it and it was great to me. Their fries are not good at all in my opinion, I have tasted better.
