Ratings juggernaut Zagat released its restaurant survey results on Monday. Topping the list for "best burger" was Five Guys Burgers and Fries. This peaked our interest. We have visited the restaurant before but decided to take a closer look on what made them #1. Five Guys is located in the Mount Pleasant Towne Center on Highway 17. Its location is a bit off the beaten path. If you blink, you'll miss it, but hopefully you won't. Décor-wise, the restaurant isn't very special. It's a red and white theme, with tiled walls and hardwood floors. Framed articles line the walls and mounds of bags of potatoes steer you toward the cash register. The menu is also very simple - burgers, fries, hot dogs, grilled cheese and a veggie sandwich. That's it. The ordering process is also not tricky. There are 15 free toppings that you can select to customize your burgers. Burgers are served as either "Little Hamburgers", one patty, or just "Hamburgers" which consists of two patties. We have never ordered anything more that the little burgers and they are a meal in themselves. Fries are ordered regular or large, and the portions are massive. A regular size was easy to split, and we could have brought friends. Soda is offered in two sizes and is refillable. On our recent visit we ordered two Little Cheeseburgers (we've had the bacon as an add on before, you should pass on it...), fries, and a soda to split. Total dinner tab, $13.76. But wait there's more. To pass the time you can munch on free fresh shelled peanuts - What's not to love? Your meal is picked up by the number on your receipt. You can then go to the condiment bar to get ketchup, vinegar, etc. Easy to use, and like the rest of the restaurant - right down to the restrooms, spotlessly clean. Everything about Five Guys is simple. Maybe that's the magic. The management is to be commended on their staff. It's very diverse and the team is also very friendly. Most importantly, they all seemed to be very happy to be there. They made us feel very welcomed - all this for $13.76. It was a 5 napkin dinner. I am a long-time fan of Five Guys so imagine the disappointment when I received the products I ordered at this location today. First off there were way too many people behind the counter. Seemed to be too many cooks in the kitchen. The counter staff were busy socializing to take my order in a timely manner then were also checking their cell phones. So ok Then the food was not to the Five Guys standard I am used to getting. The fries were under-cooked. One other customer too hers back and received a refund. And OMG salty. Way over salted. I love five guys. I really do. Their stuff has been the same for the last 15 years. Just ask them. All of the accolades on their walls are from 2005 to 2010. Anyway, my reason for writing is this. The large fry, which cost six bucks, used to be large. Now it just fills a 16 ounce paper cup. The calling card of five guys was to look in the bag and say, wow, look at all those fries. I am from california and have always been asked if our famous in & out burgers stand a chance against east coasts five guys. My husband and I go to five guys for my first time ever the service is very friendly automatically will holler a greeting once you enter the door. My husband is known for ordering unique orders such as the 6 pattie Burger and manages to conquer it each time. Their menu is varies to your own personal likes. I personally get the grilled mushrooms, grilled onions and lettuce. I like all the variety of different options. Did I mention you can help yourself to as many shelled peanuts that your heart desires! The one thing you have to get\try are the Cajun fries. I love them. If you are on a diet take a break and try five guys. They have a unique portion to their fries you get a cup measured to either reg\lrg and they also over stuff and get extras in your brown bag. These people don't answer their phones any longer when the night shift is in; I work in the area and leave myself enough time to pick up my dinner on the way into work and fused to get through all of the time; not any longer for weeks now (fall of 2022). I finally asked them if they still answer their phone and she said oh yes, we just had a major rush. There was one person in there. One customer, and I arrived 7 minutes later. And there's NEVER more than 1-3 customers at the time I call and come in. This is unacceptable; I will find another burger place to go. read more

If the burger wasn't so damn good, it would be 1 Star tonight. Went to grab some food on the way home, and a burger from Five Guys was calling my name. I was really looking forward to sharing a small fry with my wife too. But that wasn't to be . . . because "they didn't get a truck today." Seriously. That's what the guy at the register told me, at the end of this exchange: Me: "And a small fry." Guy: "We don't have any fries." Me: "You're kidding me, right?" Guy: "No. We didn't get a truck today." That is the worst excuse ever! There are WalMart's on either end of town that have frozen fries. Not as good, yet it's better than no fries. There are also other restaurants, including Five Guys, in town that probably ordered the right amount of fries, because their leadership knows how to run with correct inventory. If there was good leadership, they would have fries. Bottom line: Strike One. There is no Strike Two. OH. MY. GOD. I'm obsessed with this place. I can't get enough of it. If I could have their burgers and fries everyday I'm pretty sure I could do it. No, I'm absolutely sure I could swing it. The burgers taste like they're grilled in your backyard, but better! And the fries.....sweet heavens they are amazing. Ladies - make sure to say you want a 'Little Burger.' What can I say about Five Guys that hasn't already been said? Not much. They're super tasty burgers and pretty much the only time I crave a burger, it's a Five Guys burger. One time I went in there and wasn't really hungry enough for a burger, so I decided on a grilled cheese. And wow, they even have a good grilled cheese. It's not amazing, but for $3 I'd be hard pressed to find a better one. Also, I made the mistake of getting jalapenos on my burger one time only to discover they use raw jalapenos that are crazy hot. I couldn't finish my burger because my mouth was so on fire. And I really like spicy foods. Maybe it was a one time thing, but I didn't want to try again to find out. Another thing I've found out the hard way is that burgers should ideally be eaten within 15 minutes or else they tend to get soggy wrapped in the aluminum foil. Just today, I walked in to find out that they FINALLY added a "little" option for fries! This is huge, people. Even with three people, I'd often get just one regular order of fries and we still couldn't finish them. For the price, I don't think you can find a better burger with fries. read more

I have heard a lot about this place over the last month or so (mostly from my friend Mosby), however before that I had never even heard the name before. In case you also haven't heard of them: they started in VA in 1986 and only had 5 locations in that area between then and 2001. After that they started selling franchises and now have over 300 locations. I have to say I really like the fact that it's still possible for a small restaurant like this to become so successful and actually compete with the larger chains. Their claim to fame are their amazing burgers and equally amazing fries. This is a good thing because that is basically all they have on the menu (they sell hotdogs too). You pretty much just pay for the burger (w or w/o cheese, # of patties, etc...) and then you can pick from any of the toppings they offer to add to the burger. They have probably about 20 different toppings and if you were feeling really brave you could add all of them for no extra charge, however I wouldn't recommend this. They don't have any pre made patties and never actually freeze their hamburger, and the fries are made from Idaho potatoes that are stored in sacks dispersed throughout the restaurant...a nice touch I thought. Ok so I ordered a cheese burger with lettuce, mayo, ketchup, mushrooms, and bbq sauce. I also went ahead and made it a combo and got a drink and fries. Total was about $7.50 which isn't too bad, only a couple bucks more than McDonalds would have been and about the same price as Hardee's. So then I just had to go get my drink and then wait for my order to come up. When it was called I was presented with a plain brown paper bag which I thought was fairly charming. So after unwrapping it my first thought was "this is what a burger should look like". The bun was slightly mashed down on the patty, which btw looked like a real patty and not something cut on an assembly line (that's because they are hand made in front of you). Oh yeah and amazingly the cheese actually covers the entire patty...amazing. Now I have had burgers at many many places. I would say burgers are probably tied with sushi for my favorite meal, so every time I go somewhere that looks like they have good burgers I order one. My favorite place to get burgers has generally been Fudruckers and although I have had burgers as good, I had never really had a better one (other than ones I make of course :) )...until today that is. I just have to say that 5 Guys is amazing, the burger is nice and juicy and amazingly it actually tastes like hamburger (instead of meat flavered reconstituted cardboard). The fries are equally good with just the right amount of salt and the skins still left on. All in all this was well worth the 15 mile (about 25 minute) drive it took to get there. Despite the fact that I felt a little sick from eating it so fast I could only feel sadness at the fact that my burger was now gone :(. Oh well guess i'll just have to go again soon :)! So basically if you happen to have one of these near you (there's a store locator on their website: www.fiveguys.com) just go, you won't be disappointed...unless of course you're on a diet, I don't even want to know how many calories I just ate :D. read more

The dirtiest worst run Five Guys I've visited! Maybe 3 customers in the store so service being slow cannot be attributed to rush or time to prepare 1 hamburger and fry. Worse yet was the greasy slippery floor that did not appear to have been mopped any time recently. The same for counter tops and tabletops! At one point an employee pushed a broom around but not once did anyone attempt to wipe tables or countertops. The look of the 3 employees that I saw was a blank stare, even when I mentioned there weren't any clean tables. The only reason we stayed was because we walked there while doing business nearby. I mentioned the conditions to locals and they said it has gone downhill every since new management has taken over. New is not necessarily recent. This franchise should be pulled before tourists think this is how all Five Guys operate. read more

I would give this restaurant zero stars if I could. I ordered on the app tonight. They had no problem taking my money, but when my husband got there to pick up our order, they said they closed at 8:00 tonight. They told him to tell me to go on the app and get my money back. REALLY? How exactly does that work. There is nothing on the app that says, "This restaurant closed early tonight so click here to get your money back." Delicious and convenient, one of those places that kind of is what it is. It's definitely better than your average fast food burger, but it's also not quite as quick as a drive through and a little more expensive than most other burger joints. Their "little" burger and "little" fry are a good sized portion but even ordering the minimum you still end up paying nearly $10 for a "combo" that doesn't even include a drink. There's lots of seating inside and out which makes it easy to find somewhere even during the busiest times. They do cook to order though so if the line's backed up there is likely going to be a little bit of a wait time between when you order and actually get your bag. read more

I placed an order for my husband to pick up. When he arrived, at least 10 people in line were not wearing masks. Keep in mind that the grill is less than a few feet away from where you order, no one was eating or drinking while they were waiting to order, and our town still has a mask ordinance. Further, the restaurant itself does not allow indoor eating so everyone should be wearing a mask. My husband talked to the general manager. The general manager said he was overwhelmed and to contact corporate. My husband left the contaminated food at the restaurant. Makes me sad because we ate there at least twice a week because it is one of our favorite burger places. read more

Great place for burgers and fries. The burgers are freshly made to order (no frozen meat) and the toppings seem fresh as well. They offer regular and Cajun fries, and as long as you're not afraid of a little spice, Cajun is a must. This location is relatively quick and clean, and like most other locations, they offer peanuts while you wait. Big downside is the price. Their online order is terrible. I waited 1 hour in the store and checked with the workers 4 times before I got my order. I was not the only person waiting for so long. Several online order customers were there waiting. They really have serious issue on processing online orders. If you want to order, do it in store. During my one hour waiting time, I kept seeing customers came in, ordered in store, got their orders, and walked out before me. I have been to five guys pleanty of times but not at this location and i probably never will again. i love the chain but hate this location. i ordered my food to go so did not notice how horriby undercooked my fries were until i got home. soggy and room temp. such a waste conciderimg there was a lot in the bag, i ate maybe 3. i also ordered a little cheeseburger with the works. the patty was depressing. usually when i get a burger from five guys i eat the entire thing, with this purchase the patty was gone but i still had a couple bites left of bun. quality does not meet their standard. pick it up. read more

If you're a health nut, you should probably look past this review and go on to a grass restaurant because there is absolutely nothing healthy about this food...and it tastes so darn good. For such a small restaurant, 5 Guys definitely has room for all their hungry customers and cranks out burgers and fries like crazy everyday. Their food is to die for, they have free peanuts to snack on while you wait for your order which only takes about 5 minutes total. The employee that packs the brown bags for your order is always friendly and even rushes to your table to deliver your food. Excellent selection of drinks including Cream Soda and sweet tea. You can always expect to get a bag of fries as well. Order a small fry and you will get enough to feed you for a week. This is the way ALL burger joints should be. Friendly, GREAT customer service, your food is cooked right behind the counter so you can even stand and watch them make your burger or hot dog. 5 Guys is worth the splurge even if you're on a strict diet - allow yourself to bask in burger bliss for a little while and treat yourself to a 5 Guys burger AND fries. I have been to several Five Guy's locations in two states. I went to the one in Mt Pleasant on May 16th for the 4th time and everything changed. My burger patty must have broken apart and they gave me what was left which was about 2 ounces of meat. I also got about 1/5 of the fries I usually get. I left there still hungry and spent about $12 for one meal. I will eat there again to see if this is a quantity cut back for more profit or if it was a fluke. Come on Five Guy's, you have the most expensive burger in a fast food joint so the quality control should be the highest too! read more
