one of the few burger places i've been to that lives up to its name. this thing is my ideal burger - greasy, thin patty, unlimited free toppings, and yummy potato bun (i think..). the standard size is a DOUBLE patty/ having feasted on pad thai earlier in the day i opted for the mini burger (which is really just a regular burger). went a bit crazy with pickles, onions, mushrooms etc. and added some malt vinegar for good measure. one of the best burgers i've ever had. plus there's free refills on drinks, a bar upstairs you can bring your food to (or you can bring your cup upstairs, have them put beer or something in it then bring it back down, GENIUS), free peanuts (those with nut allergies stay away), and genuinely nice people. while cleaning the floor, one of the workers asked us how we liked our burgers and seemed a lot happier than most chain restaurant/fast food employees. i can definitely see why they've been so successful! read more

(This is a burger-only review until I get back to try the Cajun fries.) These Guys have a good rep, whether they're from NYC or not (they're from DC as I was reminded), as one of the better burger places in the city. Up against Rub (my champion), Corner Bistro, Shake Shack, Paul's, and Black Iron Burger Shop in my recent burger conquests, this place is a solid competitor. The short: good burgers, cooked only the way they like them. I can understand why people want control over the cookage, especially since these guys are gonna torch em well done, but tis ok. These burgs be well done and still maintain the juicy, like the sign says. I did a mini-burger with cheese. Mini is still 3.5 ounces, and over 500 cal with the cheese according to the sign, so it'll do -- but you can do a 'regular' burger with two patties if that's your jam. All the toppings other than cheese and bacon are free. I did mine with grilled onions an mustard, a good simple mix with the cheese. The burger had a nice crust on it, and it contrasted nicely with the soft melted cheese. The bun was a bit fluffier than I expected and was also not of the potato variety that I've had so often lately, in my own kitchen especially. The onions were slightly caramelized and the mustard yellow. There you have it. Can't customize the meat but customize the flavor with toppings from grilled mushrooms to pickles to A1 steak sauce. Not a bad deal for less than 6 bucks including tax. Or do a regular burger with two 3.5 ounce patties for a couple bucks more. read more

Came in here in the middle of SantaCon - craziness times five! The cheeseburger was delicious but the fries needed salt. They were handing out free water, which was fantabulous. Bonus points for that. Very generous portions both of the burger and fries. And free peanuts. read more

This place was absolutely delicious. I had never heard of this chain before but Chelsea J. had and she had been talking about it for a while. If you read my reviews, you'll notice that I am indeed a huge fan of finding the perfect burger. I won't say that this place beats out something like say, PAUL'S BURGER JOINT!!!!!, but it was still very very very tasty. The prices were comparable to something like Paul's. I think for a burger, fries and a soda I paid around $10 and change. So maybe a little cheaper actually. But their system is great. You order what kind of burger you want and then you can add whatever toppings you choose from their menu (and they don't charge per item either). The fries were really good but be warned: they cook them in peanut oil. Unfortunately for those with peanut allergies, this place isn't for you. On top of how they cook the fries, they also have giant barrels of peanuts in the restaurant. You just fill up bowls with peanuts. I did not participate in this part of the place, but needless to say, there are peanuts everywhere. My two problems with this place are the following: 1) The staff wasn't very nice. Our cashier was a nice young girl, but the people calling out order numbers and giving us our food were obnoxiously loud and annoying. 2) Be warned going there for the first time that what they call a 'small' cheeseburger is a cheeseburger and 'regular' cheeseburger is a double cheeseburger. Yeah, I learned that the hard way. But anyway, I would totally go back to this place because the burger was absolutely delicious and I loved their cajun fries too. read more

I don't understand why people hype this place so much as being the best. It was kinda mediocre and disappointed me. It's not a bad burger it just left a lot to be desired. Also, this is fast food and shouldn't cost $12 for a burger, fries and a drink. I know this is Manhattan, but that's no excuse. Where are the milkshakes??? I had the bacon burger with lettuce, tomato, bbq and hot sauce with fries. The burger was perfect. Tasted great, and I was a little apprehensive about getting hot sauce on it afraid that they were going to drown the burger in it but instead it just added a good spice to the already great burger. The lettuce and tomato tasted fresh and this place could have gotten a 5 star review if it wasn't for the fries. The fries were soggy and undercooked and I need my fries crispy. Second time @ this franchise, first at this location. Somehow, the burger was not as good as I remembered :( It was a bit too charcoal-ly tasting and dry (despite all the oil sizzling out). This joint is much roomier and comfy. The bathroom is clean clean! There's an upstairs bar of sorts. PS: never try to cut a burger in half and pick it up without the wrapper. I went here on my way back to rehearsal one cold night in the village and it reminded me of those old burger joints I always see in upstate NY. The fries were nothing to write home about, but the burgers were up there. As close to " In and Out " as you can get on the East coast. A cheeseburger, fries and small drink came out to $13... Its quite possible I enjoy Five Guys too much. Every Five Guys establishment I've been to has been clean and orderly. My food remained exquisite as well. There are two choices of fries: cajun (which I usually succumb to choosing) or regular. The cajun has more of an "Old Bay" flavor. Service has always been pretty speedy. So there's a good chance I'll be the first person to review Five Guys having never eaten there (and to make things even more inappropriate -- I'm also a vegetarian). But let me tell you, they have the most addictively delicious (or is it deliciously addictive?) Diet Coke I've ever tasted. I realize that's quite a bold statement, especially coming from a self-diagnosed addict such as myself (I've considered the 12 steps, but everyone deserves to have a vice, right?). But for serious, it's crazy delicious, as in, McDonalds' crack-infused DC and perfect width straws pale in comparison. I promise I'll someday try the food -- the fries do look pretty damn delicious. 2.5 stars (0.5 star for the fresh toppings) Came here with a coworker because he liked this place a lot. (Coworker hasn't tried Shake Shack or other better hamburger joints.) This place, like 99% of hyped-up burger joints, suffers from one major problem: FLAVORLESS BEEF PATTIES. Like Anna M. had wrote, it's not anything close to Shake Shack. This beef patty is flavorless. I ordered the "Hamburger" as opposed to the "Little Hamburger" thinking that the Little Hamburger was a miniature burger like White Castles. Well, the Little Hamburger is not that little: it's a burger with one patty as opposed to the two patties found on the Hamburger. I think it's a bit misleading. It makes you want to go for the Hamburger because you don't want to feel shortchanged. The Little Hamburger is $4.xx while the Hamburger is $6.xx. Mine came w/o cheese (b/c you can't truly taste the meat when there's melted cheese masking the beef), grilled onions, ketchup, mustard, and pickles. The veggies were surprisingly fresh. If it weren't for their freshess, this place would've garnered only two stars. I also had fries. Their fries are supposedly cut fresh from whole potatoes. They are very good and are unlike most fries that are made from processed potatoes. I think this place tries to be like the famous In-N-Out from California with the fresh condiments and fresh-cut fries. There's nothing wrong with copying something that works. But Five Guys falls short. In-N-Out tastes better due to their secret sauce and toasted buns. The meat may taste a little better as well. A burger, fries, and soda @ In-N-Out is around $5.00. Five Guys is more like $10.00. I wish an In-N-Out was available here but I don't think it's going to happen since they are a private company unwilling to franchise. What's not to like about 5 Guys? Especially at this location where they're fast, fast, fast. At my old apartment at 55th, I was lucky enough (my waistline notsomuch) to live a few doors down to NY's first 5G location. Even when I was the only one in there and they had about 50 peeps behind the counter, it would still take at least 20 min to get my burger. I was very pleasantly surprised by this location because Miriam and I were in and out in less than 10 min and all during the lunchtime rush. For a burger chain, it gets it right. Fries are never frozen, simple menu keeps the other ingredients fresh and flavorful. Music selection has something for everyone but isn't cloying or annoying. Fresh roasted peanuts take the edge off the hunger while your burgers are assembled. Juicy burgers in hand you know why you are there and why you should come back. read more

After moving to NY from LA, I was just craving In-N-Out. I finally found a replacement. The west coast has In-N-Out, we have Five Guys. I'll take it! Yeah, the wait is longer than, say, McDonalds, but I only waited about 10 or so minutes. Come on people, what do you expect when they cook your burgers as you order? The french fries are fresh and you have an option to dip them in Malt Vinegar - more stars are docked for that one! I like my fries on the slightly crisp more soft side, so if you like them extra crispy you probably won't like them - I'm thinking this really depends who's cooking them that day. I had the little cheeseburger and found it on the regular size - I can't imagine how much bigger the burgers "sans little" look. Give them a try, but don't expect a large menu and burgers sitting under a heat lamp. read more

i dig it. any chain that can produce fresh, well cooked burgers like this deserves my praise. it's a classic style "hamburger sandwich" in that it's partly about the beef but the accoutrement make it or break it. the bun is soft enough...although anything other than a potato bun anymore just falls a little short for me. the cheese was melted perfectly. shredded lettuce is always a bonus and the tomatoes were solid. as for the beef...i personally am a HUGE fan of the smash technique. but done without proper training and experience can result in dry, brittle patties. that can happen here sometimes. but for the most part, and at a place that doesn't take temperature requests, the beef survives quite well. the fries were fresh cut... a little greasy but i'm a fatass so that's really just fine by me. it's really 3.5 stars sidebar: once some guy on the other side of the restaurant ate his entire meal with a fucking 2 foot long parrot on his shoulder. it was gross and fascinating and douchey all at once. read more

I'm a Five Guys fan, but now that they have a brand new one on 14th St, this one needs some serious upgrades. The burgers and fries were fine, but the service is not as good as 14th St. Also, they don't have the new soda machines where you can mix and match flavors. It was 72 degrees outside when we walked in, and the temperature was stifling inside. It's just a lot dirtier and older than the new one. They need a remodel asap. read more

For a fast food burger it is pretty good. They are kinda lack on the seasoning - not only the cajun fries but the meat itself. That said I appreciated the toasted bun and the freshness of all the ingredients. They piled my bag with fries which were far more than I would ever eat. Next time just a burger and drink. read more
