Popular back east, my DH sniffed out this latest location and dragged us there this weekend. How to compare? Versus Red Robin: 5guys is quicker service and isn't "corporate food" like Red Robin. Advantage: 5guys Versus Hodad's: The only thing 5guys has on Hodad's is NO LINE. OK, and parking. Hodad's burger, steak fries, and onion rings - and awesome shakes - blow 5guys away. But there's only 1 Hodad's, but multiple 5guy's. Advantage: Hodad's, unless you aren't in Ocean Beach. Versus the Counter: different clientele. I don't love the Counter. Their burger patty and bun don't do much for me. Their fries are good. I can never remember what a good combo of toppings is and I wonder if I don't like Counter burgers because I picked a bad combo of toppings. Too much uncertainty for a $5 burger. Advantage: 5guys. Versus In n Out: Pretty similar but In n Out's burger patty is slightly - slightly - more salty and flavorful. 5guys is thicker. Both have fries that are soft and waxy - ugh. But Hodad's ambience is more homey, not as sterile as In n Out's. In n Out just has too much tile inside maybe. Advantage: ??? 5guys is definitely a contender -- try it! read more

This place has good burgers. I'd rate them between In-N-Out and Hodad's. The burgers have a lot of free options, a plus. Offering bacon is another plus. Burgers are nice and juicey, but still well done. Haven't had that from In-N-Out or Hodad's. With them it was either well done or medium rare. FGs patties need more seasoning though. In-N-Out has more patty flavor (if that makes sense). Regular order of fries is definitely enough for 2 to share unless you're really hungry. Folks have said it's pricier than In-N-Out...sure, but it also personal preference dependent. If you want a smaller burger (meat portion) for a cheaper price you go to In-N-Out or Hodad's. I went to Five Guys for the first time today, and the burgers and fries are really really good. The fries are really good and filling and tasty, the burgers are juicy and taste great. I think that it does kind of beat out IN-N-OUT, I don't know why, but the burger just tastes better and fresher. The decor is way too similar to IN-N-OUT, which doesn't really make sense because burgers are better and they don't need to imitate IN-N-OUT. The staff is friendly, the service was fast, even though the line was super long. I would give it 4 or 5 stars, if it wasn't for the fact that it is really expensive. I got a combo of cheeseburger, fries, and drink and it came out to $11.00 or so. That is like twice as much as IN-N-OUT. You do get better fries, and the burger does taste better, but $11.00 is way too much. I would come here hands down over IN-N-OUT, if the price was only $2-$3 more than IN-N-OUT, but this is like twice as expensive. read more

Disappointing. Heard so much about it and frankly it's a substandard copy of In-N-Out. Actually surprised that Zagat rates it. The way they promote themselves "in your face" style is way too much. I can imagine that people rave about this place because there's probably no In-N-Out where they come from. But don't take it from me, give it a try and see for yourself. read more

Overrated. A lot of people have been raving that 5 Guys is way better than In N Out or anything else. It's a good burger, both here and in DC where I originally had it, but it's nothing special. While there are plenty of places that beat In N Out in taste and just about everything else, 5 Guys is not one of them. Probably the best thing about them is that their "secret menu" is not secret, as In N Out's is. When you go to 5 guys, you have to explicitly tell them everything you want on your burger. read more

Well, I have read so much about these burgers and finally tried one. It was just OK. I think you have to be in the mood for this burger. Comparison to in-n-out, the meat is "beefier", the fries are "saltier", there is grilled mushrooms on the burger, but more expensive. If i were to park in a parking lot that contained both Five guys and In-n-Out, 7-8 out of 10 times I would choose in-n-out. read more

Best burger I have had in a long time. They took what In n Out has and made it 1000x better. Their burgers are big enough to fill a grown man. You don;t have to order a 8x8 to fill yourself up. I love me a good burger and when my realtives from Cleveland RAVED about this place I was excited. Short and sweet... ordered a double burger with mushrooms, grilled onions, lettuce, and pickles. The wife had a "little" cheesburger with grilled onions, mayo, mushrooms, and cajun fries. The buns are big, onions are not carmelized and therefor does not posess the sweet onion taste, mushrooms were undercooked, lettuce was "chopped" rather than hand leafed, and the meat was dry. The fries while tasty, were not crisp but rather were limp and soggy. Service was super friendly and atmosphere was nice. Took a long time to get food though during a slkow time of day. I will stick to In N Out. Can't beat it and by far the bang for the buck a CLEAR winner. read more

Good food, sh*tty price. the cheese on the burgers is the best part. they're a little greasy, but the meat tastes fresh. I don't even know why they give you so many fries... a small can feed two people.. Free peanuts rule.. why peanuts, though? I dunno... I'm almost tempted to bring a bottle of ranch. For a fast burger, this is the place. Burgers are good with lots of add-ons, for free. The fries are awesome with or without the Cajun seasoning (I prefer them without). I always split an order, there's as many in the bag as in the cup they serve them in. I didn't really dig the hotdog. Someone had told me that they wrap the hotdog with bacon before cooking it and it sounded scrumptious. Well I found out different. The bacon is precooked in the morning and they just add it on top and there's no chili. Stick with the burgers. The service is pretty fast and the staff is very friendly. They also have an outdoor patio that allows dogs. Give it a try. read more

Hell yeah! This joint's burgers are big, fat, juicy, cooked perfectly. I got a huge variety of awesome toppings on mine. Grilled onions, mushrooms, and steak sauce? OMG, they offer steak sauce! I'm in heaven! Their natural-skin fries are fantastic (and they have malt vinegar for them!) Two people can easily split one regular order; it's huge. The free peanuts to keep your hands and mouth occupied is genius. Wide variety of drinks. They had all my favorites, I couldn't choose. Service was just incredible. Efficient and polite. I wanted to take the guy behind the counter home with me. ;) Parking's a cinch, there's loads. Lots of seating, too. Bar height, regular tables, indoors, outdoors on a shaded patio with umbrellas. Cool, simple, highly contrasting decor makes for a pleasant atmosphere. Oh, and best of all for me, they play classic rock. Not just any classic rock, like common hits. Good stuff. A real variety, things you never hear on the radio. It won't turn you off if that's not your thing, it's not too loud, but if that is your thing, it will definitely make you want more. I'm 26 and classic rock is my lifetime love, so finding a place where they play things I only know from listening to eclectic albums is like finding a diamond in the rough. First time to 5 Guys this week at the new PB location. Like others have said doesn't live up to all the hype. They do like to post how good they are everywhere else all over the walls of the place. I only care about the location I am eating at not all the others. I had the double patty cheese burger and fries. Burger was a good size but the bun seemed to be a little undersized to handle all the meat and fixings. The meat was well seasoned and all the veggies fresh. Did like the choice of all the fixings. The fries i would say did one up over IN-N-Outs fries who I guess is there main comparison. Nice little spicy seasoning on them. Good food but a little pricey for fast food burgers. First thought when ordering was where is the Combo price for the burger/fries/drink??? a la cart for everything really! $2.50 for a soda ouch! I think this place forgot to do some market research in the neighborhood they are in. where the Taco shop is king and the Happy HR bar bargain rule the street (Garnet). Every other bar on the strip has a burger and fries combo for around 7-9 bucks and they serve beer and sports on TV to watch. For the price and size of 5 guys double patty all the fixin/fries /coke 11 buck range, I could ride my bike to a few really good burger joints. If they are going for the fast burger crowd in PB they better adjust to the neighborhood prices $5-7 for a small combo would be on par. read more

I've been to Five Guys three times and they've fallen short of the mark every time. The first time I found a small piece of bone or plastic in my burger. Luckily I didn't crack a tooth and I really liked the food so I gave them another chance. The second time they didn't give me my drink. I had to go back and ask for it but it wasn't a big deal. So I went there again tonight with a friend and ordered two burgers but they only gave us one burger. I told them about it and 10 minutes later, still no burger. Meanwhile, everyone else got their orders. I had to ask them again and they finally delivered my burger but only after finishing everyone else's orders. This is totally unacceptable. If you make a mistake on an order, then you fix it right away. You don't put it on hold and at the end of the line. Unfortunately, all of this has me thinking twice about eating at Five Guys again. But they're probably too busy taking orders to even care. read more

Burger meat melts in your mouth... When you order your burger, you get to choose all the toppings you want with it. I suggest the bacon and cheese. Normal burgers come with 2 patties, looks large, but the meat literally melts in your mouth. Cajun fries were too powdery for me. You get free peanuts all night. Free refills on sodas and Gold's Peak tea. $11 is a tad high for burger/fries/drink. Line wasn't long on a Saturday night and parking was easy. The burgers were huge and delicious. The portion was enough to feed two people so I recommend the junior unless you haven't ate all day. The only negative is the speed. There was a crowd and they are not super fast. I'm okay with that which makes up for the quality of taste. There are peanuts to enjoy for the wait. The friendliest crew ever! We ordered food online for pickup but upon arriving we were greeted by the staff opening the door for us, the person sweeping the floor, the cashier...everyone at this location is super energetic and super friendly. If you like hearing your name screamed out loud, this is the place for you. They would scream "Nina is here!!" "Your order is ready Nina!" Well you walk in and at least on my visit, the music was so loud I could not talk with the people at my table. I ordered a "hamburger" and got a double and my friend ordered a "hamburger" and got a single.. go figure. The hamburgers tasted steamed or something, reminded me of the ones at my elementary school. The fries are very good and it's nice they have peanuts for you if you want them. The coolest thing was the coke dispenser which allowed for some unusual flavors such as lime, raspberry, etc. The decor consists of newspaper clippings from around the country that mention them, in other words, there is no decor. I don't see how this company will compete with the likes of In N Out or even Smash Burger. read more

When 3 stars isn't enough but 4 stars may be a bit too generous round up. 5 guys is delicious but getting what you actually ordered at this location is a craps shoot. The first time my cheeseburger with A1 came back as a hamburger with bacon. Who complains about bacon though, right? Today my cheeseburger with mayo and tomato came to me as a bacon cheeseburger with mustard and lettuce. I'm flexible so I nommed it down. Made it disgusting and unapplitizing. I threw away my fries after 3 of them and threw away my burger 2 bites in. Can I get my $14 back? Absolutely disgusting! In-N-Out for life!! We tried this place out after seeing some reviews on YELP and having seen their sign through the fence at Liberty Station as I was driving down Rosecrans Blvd. I had the Cheeseburger and you- know-who had the Little Hamburger. We shared a small order of fries. With two small drinks. Total was twenty bucks and change. Help yourself to peanuts in the shell while you wait for your order. Apparently it's de rigueur to drop the shells on the floor. The wait time to pick up the order was about the same as In-N-Out. The Cheeseeburger was wrapped in foil-lined paper and was "drippy" enough to keep it wrapped while I ate it. It was very tasty. The fries, although plenty enough for two to share, were a bit on the limp side. I prefer them crispier. The place was full of people but not crowded. The background music was a little too loud and we retreated to the outside seating area where we could here ourselves talk. We'll be back. read more

Ho Hum. I can only assume they bribe the folks that write the glowing reviews posted all over the walls cause I can't see much here! The food is overpriced for what it is, the line is usually long, not because of demand, just slow service (like the PO) I like the free peanuts as they substitute for buying the over priced fries. The food is not bad, but not that great. I like the music selection but it is so loud conversation is a strain. The decor is harsh and, like the staff, lacks personality. After return visits I have to re rate their food. The hamburgers are great once you figure out the best condiment mix and definitely get grilled onions. Peanuts are a plus. I've been about three or four times to give Five Guys a legitimate chance. A client of mine recently said they are the same as In N Out, I cringed at the thought. I'm quite fond of my double double. The burger is generally greasier and more plain than In N Out. I decided to mix it up this time. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger with BBQ sauce. This burger was not greasy, much better. The BBQ sauce was good. Recommend instead of the ketchup and yellow mustard. The plain American cheese is already boring so the BBQ sauce spices it up. Plus the cheese was cold, not melted at all. Some cheese options would a nice. And the bread could be better as well. But overall the burger was darn good. You get a bigger burger, plethora of soft drink choices, and free peanuts to munch on. PS: All the signs saying how Five Guys is the best is a bit much read more

I work walking distance to this place. I decided to finally give them a try and I ordered the little hamburger $4.99 All The Way (lettuce, tomato, grilled onions, grilled mushroom, pickles, mustard and ketchup) and an order of little Cajun fries for $3.09. When I went back to the office, I ate my fries and when I opened my burger it only had the bun and meat plain. (If my work was not close, I would have been upset for paying $4.99 for a plain burger). I walked back and I asked the cashier "What does all the way mean?" The cashier told me "All the way means everything on it". I told him that my burger only had the meat and bun. He apologized and refunded me my whole order, and they made my burger right away. Their customer service is excellent. I was only looking to get my burger replaced with the one I truly ordered and instead they went above and beyond by refunding my order and making the correct burger for me in minutes. The quality of the burger is great. It tasted fantastic and the fries were made fresh to order. I will come back here again. Thanks five Guys! read more

I love Five Guys! Living in Hawai'i I only get to visit when I'm out on travel and these guys fit the spot. This location is great just off of Rosecrans and easy to get to if you're working anywhere near Point Loma. They have all the amenities at Five Guys you would expect: loads of extra fries in the bag; food made after you order it guaranteeing freshness; the Coke free style machine (cherry coke zero is seldom found outside a supermarket); and last but certainly not least is the vinegar for the french fries! Had five guys for the first time in Detroit back in may. I instantly became addicted to their burgers. When I saw there was one in San Diego, and less than 10 minutes from my work, I knew I was in trouble. I've had it twice this week. Bacon cheeseburger with BBQ sauce! That's how I like mine, but there are tons of extra toppings, all free! There are boxes of peanuts everywhere for guests to snack on. Back east people just throw the shells on the ground, so that is what I did here in SD. No one else was doing the same and probably thought I was a jerk. I believe it's accepted and a part of the environment Five Guys is striving for, laid back and old school. Regular fries better than the Cajun fires, FYI... Five Guys is awesome! read more

Very greasy / oily food the first time; today was very dry. $6.39 for a cold, dry bacon cheese burger (the big one, not the little one), festooned with six slices of cold American cheese surrounding the single meat patty, topped with a single slice of bacon.
