The Burgers are pretty good. I like the meat better than In-n-Out. I also like the the grilled mushrooms. That's probably the biggest reason I'd end up at Five-Guys over In-n-Out. I'd give it an additional star had they not royally screwed up my last to-go order. I made a burger run and ordered 5 burgers, 4 of which were supposed to have bacon. Not a single burger had bacon in it. Also, one burger was missing it's peppers, and we asked for jalpeno's on the side...nada. I went at 9:15p and the place wasn't even crowded at the time. This place definitely lived up to the billing. The beef used in their burgers is very good. When you eat enough burgers in your life, it becomes apparent in distinguishing quality. No fillers, no trans-fat or preservatives=great taste. I like the variety of toppings that are offered + its at no additional charge. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger: the burger is full of flavor and the bacon was crispy. The cajun fries were very good. It has a good crunch and it almost melts in your mouth like butter. Greasy as hell though. Never seen a paper bag soaked with so much grease before. The restaurant was well planned. It is spaced out and it doesn't give you a claustrophobic feeling. My only complaint is how everything is a la carte. For four of us it came out to $40. If this place is on the way, I'm definitely stopping here again. I agree with Zagat. I can see how people like this place. My burger was great, but the bun was soggy as well as the fries. I really liked the fact you can choose what you want on your burger. We ate there at the restaurant, I can't imagine how soggy the burger and fries would have been if we had to drive home with it in the car. Also this place costs more than In and Out. Anyways, why I loved it so much here is because of how juicy and well done the burger patty was. I love juicy. I was very ecstatic about how fresh the ingredients were. You get to customize your own burger. That "Little Cheeseburger" is not so little. That was good enough for me! And I like to eat. After repeat visits, Five Guys has just become more and more blah to me. Maybe it's the West Coast-ness in me talking, but their burgers are just hot and greasy messes. Even their cajun fries are loaded with oil and salt. Their burgers aren't exceptionally tasty and their meat patties could probably use some more seasoning. Got there on Saturday around 2pm and the place was packed. Line on the right to order and pay and then wait for your number to be called. The line wasn't too long but we did wait around a bit for a table. This is technically "fast" food so people get their food fast, eat fast and leave. True enough, a table showed up in a couple of minutes. Not long after, we get the call and that meant beefy goodness was on it's way. I had the Little Hamburger all the toppings. This is recommended way to go for newbies like me but I ended up with a smooshed and soggy burger. This may be an East Coast thing as the buns were squished in the foil and were pretty soggy with the various toppings. Still, the burger was nice and thick with melted cheese, mushrooms and a medley of condiments. Also ordered the fries cajun style. Fries were done to perfection with crispy outside and tender inside. Cajun flavor wasn't hot but just added a nice touch of spice. Order the regular size as they overfill the cup with fries that will end up in the bag so that's a LOT of fries. Go with the large to share with 4 or more. Not a big fan of the sogginess but it's a great tasting burger that's made fresh without the "McDonald's" flavor. First Impression: The first thing I noticed was the bag of potatoes that forms you a line and thought to myself "sweet this place makes their first fresh". The first time I've ever ate here I was so clueless on how to order and how what size to order. I ordered their large fries (not knowing that a small would already be enough for me) & a regular burger (that I could not finish). But even though I didn't finish my meal that might be one of the best burgers I've ever had. The meat is very juicy! Heard about this place from my brother and a few friends. Went with a foodie friend to grab Sunday lunch. The location is nice wth plenty of parking and other shops nearby. The place upon arrival was packed, I'm talking a snake line that ran clear to the other side of the joint up to a big ol'box of peanuts... yes I said peanuts. The place gives you the idea of in-n-out with a juicy burger twist as in the food seems like that from a family BBQ. The wait to order took about 15 minutes, the wait for our food was about another 10..a bit long but with the place being packed not out of the ordinary, and this is where the peanuts come in. They have free peanuts for those waiting in line so you don't gnaw your arm off while waiting forever to order. We got our food to go since there was clearly no place to sit. I got the bacon cheeseburger "all the way" (meaning tomatoes/lettuce/pickles/grilled onions & mushroom/ketchup, mustard, & mayo) minus the mayo, and added jalapeño's. The greatest part was when the cute cashier asked if I wanted the jalapeño's raw or grilled =) Also got Cajun fries instead of the regular fries. The burger was great but a little messy, the regular burger is actually a double so two huge patties and loads of melted american. The grilled jalapeño's added a nice kick to the typical onions & mushrooms. The Cajun fries however were definitely sad, peanut oil soaked from being cooked in too low a heat andhe Cajun seasoning wasn't anything to write home about. Fantastic burgers, great service, and that old fashion diner feel makes five guys one of the better burger joints in the San Jose area. After a few visits to Five Guys in the past, I decided it was about time for a review. These are some of the most juicy burgers I have ever had before! Last time I ordered a bacon cheese burger with everything on it (besides pickles) and the first thing I noticed was just how big it was. You know when you see those fast food commercials where the hamburger on display is like two stories tall and looks super fresh, but then you go to there and it looks like someone sat on it? Well at Five Guys, there is no BS like that. This thing was actually kind of difficult to eat, that's how massive it was! The fries were equally as good, with just the right amount of salt and crunch to them. When it came my turn to order the woman at the register was all smiles from ear to ear, super polite, super friendly, and quick to take down my order. My only gripe about this place is the somewhat limited seating and parking. For all of the times I've eaten here, it was never too crowded so seating wasn't so much of an issue, but the parking can get bad since it's located in a shopping center around other major stores. I've eaten here a couple times and still haven't tried the burger. On both visits I had the hot dog with bbq sauce, pickles and grilled onions. I never really thought about putting bbq sauce on a hot dog before but when I was presented with the option I went for it and loved it. For the price the hot dogs are on the small side, and the buns are pretty unremarkable. It's clear the novelty and the buzz about this place hasn't worn off yet because there's a steady stream of customers in and out of here all day long. On my first visit I ordered a regular sized order of their Cajun fries. The spice on the fries was nice but the fries themselves were a little dry, too long and not very crispy. They lack that munch factor that keeps you eating. I wish they had a fry size below the regular because that's really just too much to eat. If you want all of these on your burger all you would have to say is "All the way". Jalapeno Peppers, Green Peppers, A-1 Sauce, Bar-B-Q Sauce, Hot Sauce are toppings that must be paid for if you want them. Five guys also has fries that are cooked in peanut oil, a bit healthier but the fries were only ok. Hawt dawgs and Grilled Cheese Sammys are also on the menu. Jim told us his reasoning was to not have one because of the fact that when a drive thru is included it makes his workers have to rush back in forth between customers in the drive thru and customers in the restro. My, oh my, what a great idea that was. The burgers CRUSH those of In-N-Out - nothing like hand shaped patties that demand your attention as you bite down into them. You'll pull the sandwich away from your face, look at it, and say "Got-damn! that's a hardy patty!" A single patty, so thick, that you'll swear it's a double-double™. Was there even lettuce, tomato and pickles in my hamburger?! Who gives a shit, there was "burger" in my burger. The fries are made from fresh potatoes, and you can tell they are form the moment you bite into one. There's also a little whiteboard next to the register that tells you where the current batch of potatoes comes from. I would hope that everyone try this place out, and ignore the more critical comments. My friend: "man, five guys is so much better than in-n-out." Me: SLAP (I just slapped my friend in the face for committing such an unforgivable blunder). * this is a dramatization. I did not actually slap him. I just verbally owned him and made him cry for being so wrong. Here's how I did it... From the second I walked into five guys I though "wow this place looks like a super lame version of in-n-out." Down to the red and white tiles. But they have this new innovation! Boxes of potatoes stacked up that help form the line to the counter. Why are there stacks of potatoes. Am I in costco or a burger place? I don't get it. After you order you get to eat some peanuts while you wait. Why? Everyone I have ever talked to about five guys stops to mention how cool it is that you can have some peanuts. This is a pointless gimmick. How do peanuts fit in with burgers? What's next? Edamame while you wait at chipotle? So I guess I haven't gotten to the food. That's probably because I almost forgot about it. It was just so bad that I tried to erase it from my memory. Alas I was unable. Ok. The burgers are pretty big. Bigger than in-n-out. But you don't need bigger. An in-n-out burger is the perfect size. And personally I'd like to have to eat a smaller pile of garbage than a bigger one. The burgers are super soggy. The nasty slop sauce that they slather in there just soaks into the bun creating a soppy mess. The patty is pretty tasteless and never cooked perfectly. The bun is also boring. But oh wait! You can add bacon! At first before I came here I was pretty excited by this prospect. But bacon can only do so much. In fact the flavor of bacon is lost in the ball of trash that is a five guys burger. At least the shake was...oh wait. There was no shake! This is the redneck relative of places like The Counter and Smashburger. It's not at all fancy and articulately decorated; it's just the opposite. Pretty plain Jane that they serve your fries in a plain paper cup in a plain brown bag. It's all good though since their burgers are good and hefty. Their "Little Burgers" really aren't so LITTLE. They've got a secret menu hiding somewhere too since I did spy with my little eye another table chowing on what looked like a protein burger (burger with no bread). Something to ask about next trip. They have fries available two different ways. Peanuts are a fun, unexpected treat to pick up when there. I'm not sure if Quasimoto is working the fryolator or if the restaurant got lazy and just bought a bunch of easy bake ovens, because dude...those fries are bland as HELL! No dude, I mean seriously. HORRIBLE! This place has nothing on In- and Out. Being my first time here, I ordered a regular burger thinking it was a regular burger, but it came out to be huge. The taste of their burger was okay, nothing special. The way the burger comes out is the real problem. They need to change the way the burger comes out to you or box it so your burger doesn't get all smushed up and your buns don't get soggy. No one likes to eat soggy bread. Their fries both cajun and regular weren't very special at all. They serve peanuts, too. I'm guessing it's just to distract ppl from the wait time of your food. Came here the other night to see if the burgers were just as good as I remembered them. These burgers did not disappoint. SO GOOD. They have a no frills menu--burgers/cheeseburgers with or without bacon)--with a whole bunch of toppings that are all FREE. Love it! Love that all of the toppings are listed out, clearly, and that if you wanted to, you can just order the burger "all the way" and get all the toppings that are listed in black. Btw, if you haven't had a burger with A-1 sauce yet, I suggest you do. Seriously, TDF status. The regular sized fries is big enough for 2 pplz to share, so definitely plan on sharing. We ordered 1 regular sized cajun fries, and couldn't finish them. Note: cajun fries had a LOT of spices. Next time, will probably order 5guys style fries. In any case, so happy that another east coast institution made its way to the Bay Area. Here's hoping that the next import will be Dunkin Donuts--preferably around the corner from my apt. read more
