3.5 stars I was up in San Jose one day with my girlfriend and she wanted to take me to Five Guys as she claimed it to be better then In-N-Out. I love In-N-Out and decided to give their East Coast rival a shot. When we walked in it sort of reminded me of In-N-Out because of the similar colors and short menu. However, this menu lets you customize what you want to put on the burger from different toppings to sauces. I decided to make it simple and go "all the way" with the toppings on my Bacon Cheeseburger. They give you a number and call it out when your order is ready. The burger I ordered was HUGE. I could barely fit it in my mouth! The flavor was great, but wish the cheese melted more on the burger. As far as satisfaction of the burger, it remains a tie with In-N-Out. One thing that Five Guys does better are the fries. They are thick cut and not soggy like In-N-Out. We got the seasoned fries which had a nice kick to them. You don't even have to pay extra for them to be seasoned! Overall thoughts: Five Guys is In-N-Out on steroids. Do I find them to be superior to their competition? We saw a bunch of these in New York in Philly (okay, maybe one or two). My brother never suggested we eat there while in New York, but he didn't have any knocks against it either. After a super ecstatic review from my buddy, I decided to ask my coworkers to try it with me and we rushed out to try and beat the crowds and craziness. Little did we know, a funeral procession was exiting onto Curtner to get to the cemetary. Luckily, we made it in time and got in line. which wrapped around the interior. We did get some peanuts to have while waiting in line, and I thought that was a nice feature to this joint. I ordered a regular cheese burger "All The Way" with jalapeños and green peppers. A coworker ordered large Cajun fries for us to share. Once we got the burgers, I noticed that the cheese was definitely not melted. That kind of sucked. I took a bite into the burger and I did like the taste however, save the cold cheese. The strange thing was that the jalapeños are fresh, and definitely not spicy at all. Also, the "grilled" onions seemed to just be sautéed in oil, and was definitely uneventful in the flavor department. The burger eventually became a mess with all the toppings inside of it... This is one of those places you go past 100 times but never try. Today I tried them and just to be fair as fair can be I not only ordered a hamburger with fries and drink my order included a hot dog! This place is apparently the "In-N-Out Burger" of the East Coast. People go crazy for In-N-Out Burger. I just find them okay. Even the design is pretty goshdarn similar with the reds, the whites, and the yellows. The menu is pretty much the same too--but In-N-Out has a slight advantage because of their "secret" menu. But the thing that sets this place apart is the utter size and customizability of the burgers. They have everything from A1 sauce to... everything! The bacon burger I had was simply divine. I don't remember the last time I've enjoyed a burger so much. They also have cajun style fries. I know that the west coast is known for their burgers, but damn. It was a little hard to find this place because it's nestled amongst all the shops in The Plant's plaza. An easy way to find it is to look out for the Chevy's on the main road. Don't get too full from these because there's a massive meal that awaits you. The menu is very simple like In-N-Out, but I would have to say the burgers themselves are definitely different when it comes to size and quality of ingredients. To start out, you choose from a regular burger that comes with two meat patties or a little burger that comes with a single meat patty. From there you can add on cheese, bacon, or bacon & cheese. Next, you can choose from as many types of toppings you want for FREE. I'll admit there are small nuiances I would have liked such as a toasted bun and a smaller option for fries. Just like most other people who tried Five Guys, my curiousity was piqued when I saw a feature on Yahoo! News about a couple of week ago declaring a burger war between the West Coast Champion, In-N-Out Burger vs East Coast Champion, Five Guys Burgers and Fries. All West Coast bias aside, I have to say In-N-Out Burger wins hands down. With all due respect to Five Guys, In-N-Out just has a better burger. There are some things that Five Guys offers that In-N-Out doesn't. They are the following: Quantity of Food - The size of the burgers and fries is alarming. This is especially true relative to the price you pay for it. The small cup of fries comes in a small paper bag and that bag is a quarter of the way filled to the top, not including the fries that are actually in the cup. This gives a whole new meaning to "bottom of the bag" fries, you can make a meal out of the stuff that falls out of the cup. Menu - The menu at Five Guys is much more extensive than In-N-Out's. Their menu includes an array of toppings for your burger as well as hot dogs and sandwiches on top of the different variations of the burgers they serve. Speed - If the line is manageable, you can expect to see your food in less than five minutes. Cleanliness - The place was very clean and the decor was welcoming although eerily similar to In-N-Out. Service - The service was good. The cashier and the people who hand you your food are very nice. Miscellaneous - If you have young ones with you, the high chairs they have here are top-notch. Definitely a plus for parents. You'll notice there's a lot of positives to this review, but when you compare the quality of the burger to one like In-N-Out, it just doesn't stack up. I've heard others say the burger tasted homemade, I would be inclined to agree with that. I also thought the Cajun Fries weren't very good. This is my go to place when I don't want to wait 1 hour to get In-N-Out on Capitol Expressway. I've been here a couple of times and I've been happy nearly all of the times. The quality of the burger is good and I usually get the burger in really good shape. It's just your typical Five Guys. I will say that sometimes, they mess up the order and give me the wrong burger toppings (missing onions, missing peppers, added tomatoes when I didn't want them, etc). And, in these cases, it hasn't even been very busy. I will also say that I think they overly season their cajun fries. This place was super packed when I walked in. There was a line to order food, and all the tables were taken by customers. Looking at the menu, I decided to order a little hamburger. VEGETARIAN REVIEW: ok, so every now and again I need that texture of a good bun. This place is decent they offer the same option as in-n-out, which is either a bun with just veggies or a cheese/veggies with bun option. Its just plain american cheese, and the vegetables were just not as fresh as in-n-out was for me. They do have a huge amount of other veggie toppings you could put on it that would probably make it interesting for someone outside of the tomato-lettuce-onion combo. The fries are good, better imo than in-n-out because they have that softer potato texture. So, it wasn't fabulous but it wasn't shabby either. I find myself in a quandary. If I was rating this burger alone or even hot from the kitchen, I'd probably rate it lower. But the fries were some of the most enjoyable things I've had this side of animal-style fries, and somehow the burger tasted even better when I ate the leftover portion hours after my first meal. I also love that you can get all kinds of free toppings, including my beloved relish that nobody else seems to realize exists, but a lot of the flavor seemed to disappear against the beef and lettuce in the first go-around. I love In-n-Out but there's something about this place that makes it slightly better. The burgers totally taste home made. The service is fast and friendly, but not too fast or overly-friendly. For example, the lady who helped us out took her time to explain the menu and how to order a burger. We are big burger fans, so naturally when we heard about Five Guys we had to come see what all the fuss was about. The hamburgers themselves were obviously fresh, very juicy, and I love the variety of toppings you can add. But to be honest, I can make a burger just as good. Now the fries were pretty much amazing! Perfectly seasoned and hot:) When we were ordering we were going to ask for two fries and the guy goes "trust me you guys won't need more than one" i was a bit skeptical because I know how much we love fries, especially my daughter. My Little Cheeseburger didn't live up to the hype...it was just average tasting. However, I did like all the free toppings you can put on your burger...like grilled mushrooms. I also liked how the burger was wrapped in foil and had a sticker with a number on it that corresponded with the burger number on the receipt. That made it easy to identify which burger was mine instead of having to prod around through each burger's contents. And as for the fries...greasy but tasty. Warning: If you are allergic to peanuts, be careful when you go to Five Guys! The restaurant gives out free peanuts to eat and the peanuts are everywhere! read more

Wanted to see what all the hype was about... After ordering a little bacon cheeseburger with everything on it and the hubby ordering the bacon cheeseburger, we were super stuffed trying to finish the regular and cajun fries. The red and white decor remind me of in-n-out but nothing else besides the simplicity of the menu. Thought the fries were pretty oily and the tables/floor were covered with all the "fry crumbs" from pulling em outta the bag. The idea of having peanuts is pretty cool, but I enjoy fries with my burger ;) Enjoyed the burgers and having yummy bacon! Huge plus for having big patties! read more

Definitely better than In N Out, but still not 5-Star worthy. First of all, they don't have ranch. I'm sorry.. but I'm a ranch with my fries kinda gal. Especially since they have Cajun fries. C'mon now. It's highly necessary. I didn't get complimentary peanuts either! I'm not sure if I was supposed to ask for it, but I sure did not get any peanuts. This was my first time having Five Guys and truly I was a bit impressed. So you order everything separately. That idea is cool I guess, but then it does get pricey. Their "little" burgers aren't even little so that's a nice surprise. Their fries come in a cup and then the rest goes in the bag. Interesting idea. I love the variety you get in the burger. I got everything in mine minus tomatoes (they're messy)! My burger was so juicy and cheesy. Absolutely loved it! Like I said, could've been better with ranch and the complimentary peanuts. read more

I didn't find my very first experience at five guys remarkable in any way. I kept an open mind and in no way tried to compare these burgers and fries to In-n-Out or The Counter. I was put off by how the burgers were so "backyard bbq"; wrapped in foil and squished together with your choice of fixin's. I did thoroughly enjoyed the cajun fries, generously seasoned with nice heat. It wasn't until my second visit with friends that I began to appreciate it. Yes, the burgers aren't pretty, but you can get a pretty delicious classic American style burger here. The small burgers are enough for me and I'll usually choose them with cheese and bacon. Of course the Cajun fries are a must. The service at this place is awesome. I feel like each employee has character and has great energy. It's almost as if there's a requirement for genuine kindness and I really appreciate that. read more
