I go to school in Boston and when i tell all my friends about In-N-Out, every single one of them retorts in a defensive manner always saying "FIVE GUYS IS BETTER! PEOPLE RATED THEM AND SAID FIVE GUYS IS BETTER!" So on my winter break, i heard that a Five Guys was in the area so i thought "lets put this debate to rest" apparently a lot of people are comparing it to in-n-out so I guess I'll save you another In-N-Out duke-out in this review. The first thing i realized was that they didn't use trays. They gave everyone a brown bag with their food in it. Not too green if you're into that...'cause everyone just ends up throwing everything out in the bag. Convenient, yes...but mother earth cries at the sight. Upon opening the bag, i saw Cajun fries. A lot. Like they give you an unholy amount of fries. It's like they take the cup they store the fries in, dump it in your bag, fill the cup again, and throw it on the bed of fries and then grab a handful and throw even more on top. I literally had to fish around for my burger. I got a bacon cheeseburger with mayo lettuce tomatoes grilled onions grilled mushrooms ketchup mustard onions jalapenos. Okay. Sorry. I lied. I have to compare it to in-n-out.. The burger felt smaller than in n out seeing that it was possible for me to demolish in 5 minutes without being particularly hungry. It was quite delicious. I don't understand how people compare it to In-N-Out. They're very different types of burgers. They're both good in their own respects. Problem is, Five Guys is only open til 10 while In-N-Out has always been open when my stomach growled late at night. I also looked at the quotes that claim this is the "best burger." Interestingly, they all came from one source: the Washingtonian. Somewhat biased? not sure, but all in all, it was a good burger. If you're looking for a good burger, Five Guys is a solid choice. I wish it were possible to write a review about a street intersection. If I could, I would sing the praises of Sunnyvale-Saratoga and El Camino Real in Sunnyvale. At this corner, there's a Five Guys, Trader Joe's, OSH, Safeway, Sprouts, Pinkberry, Toys R Us, Panera Bread, a sushi restaurant, a couple sporting goods stores, and a Walgreen's - among other businesses. Virtually everything necessary for a happy and comfortable existence is right here. But I cannot write a review about a street corner, so I'll talk about Five Guys. I went to Five Guys on the day that it opened last fall. Some friends from out East had been promising to take me to Five Guys when I visited them, telling me that it was as good as In-N-Out. Never one to pass up an opportunity for a hamburger, I was intrigued. The opening of this Sunnyvale store saved me the cost of a plane ticket. I won't mince words - I really, really like their burgers. They have a rich flavor, and the toppings have been consistently fresh. Then buns are soft and light, but don't disintegrate when loaded down with sauces. The burgers can be a bit messy to eat, but in my experience it isn't that much different from a double double at In-N-Out. I usually ask for light ketchup and mustard, and this generally solves the messiness issue. I also won't attempt to compare the burgers at In-N-Out and Five Guys. I like both quite a bit, and sometime I have cravings for one but not the other. But the one aspect in which I feel that Five Guys is superior is their fries. I've never liked In-N-Out fries. To me, they always seem soggy and their flavor, though clean, just doesn't do it for me. In the past, I have ordered burgers from In-N-Out and driven down the street to get fries from McDonald's. Five Guys fries, on the other hand, are quite delicious. They are big, crisp, and flavorful. My one quibble is that they do seem greasy, as illustrated by the growing grease stains on the brown paper bags in which one's food is served. The malt vinegar that is available in the restaurant is also a nice touch. Now they just need some mayo dispensers for those of us who got hooked on frites with mayo in Europe. Fresh with skins on, thicker cut (cross between a steak fry & a shoe string) and identified origin by city and state. * The menu offering is pretty limited (fries, hot dogs, hamburgers) * No drive thru * Limited seating (if not a mad dash to stake out tables), opt to take out so you can avoid the headache Burgers are fresh and can be topped with a variety of toppings. Mmm 5 guys really hits the spot! I'd prefer 5 guys over In n Out any day. The parking lot is crowded because there are so many eateries in this plaza. You're better off parking further away. There's a line even on weekdays, but it moves fairly quickly. It's waiting for your food to be done that can take a while. I really think it's a misnomer to call their single patty burger the little burger and the double a burger. They really should clarify that on the menu. I think they messed up my order a little or someone spilled some relish into the lettuce. Ew. But the burger still tasted good. I watched them make the fries. After they fill the cup with fries they top it off with more fries. Fries overload!! Clean place. Someone comes around to bust the tables and sweep the floor. It was my second visit to Five Guys, I went to the one off curtner for the first time and I did not like it. The second visit was a tad better but I am still team IN n OUT heheheeheh. What I like from Five Guys is that you get to customize your burger and put LOTS of Toppings such as Jalapeno, grilled onion, mushroom, bellpepers, etc on your burger and all-you-can-eat roasted peanuts.. yumm! But the prices are a tad higher (double the price at in n out) and they don't have the magical delicious finger-licking good thousand island that's a staple at in-n-out. In a rare visit to the west coast I figured we'd do a taste test with Five Guys Burgers and In-N-Out Burgers. FULL DISCLOSURE: Apparently, I live in the area where Five Guys was born, but I hold no loyalties to them. (FG) All the way VS (INO) Animal Style Verdict: DRAW! INO burger had a lot more flavor going on than the FG burger, but the pickles were also WAY overpowering which really detracted from the overall flavor. I think without the pickles, the INO Animal Style would have been the clear winner IMHO. (FG) Hamburger VS (INO) Double Verdict: In-N-Out's Double Burger The FG Hamburger has two patties just as the INO Double. I enjoyed both but I preferred INO's Double just slightly over FG Hamburger. A further analysis of each burger. FG appears more appetizing with the sesame covered buns and with bigger patties, but also cost significantly more than INO. The last time I ever go here. The floor was full of grease from the fries somebody dropped. There were 4 employees and 4 customers. Place was not packed at 3pm Saturday afternoon. Garbage cans were full and tables needed attention and the floor needed some serious sweeping and mopping. My Bacon cheese was a double patty cheese burger without bacon. The fat blonde asked if i wanted the bacon on the side with a plate or a fresh burger. $14 for a bacon cheese and fries and chocolate shake was a waste of time, money and satisfaction. Horrible! My boyfriend has been raving about Five Guys for months, so when we discovered a location near his house in Sunnyvale, we just had to go. The burgers were decent, but not mind-blowing and the single patty burger seemed a little light on meat for how many calories it was. Seriously though, who wants to know how many calories are in each burger? You know you're going for a burger, you know it's going to be fatty, I don't want it spelled out on the menu! The fries were pretty disappointing - it's a generous serving size, but they're pretty mushy, not crispy at all, and the grease soaked through the brown paper bag before we got it to our table. My Mom told me about this place a few months ago, so when I came home for winter break, we went for lunch. It's located in a fairly new plaza with a Panera Bread, Pizza My Heart, Rubios, and more shops on the other side. When we pulled in, the parking lot was pretty full; lots of cars were circling. Regular burger: 2 hamburger patties Little burger: 1 hamburger patty You can also choose between the hamburger, bacon burger, bacon cheeseburger. What's inside: All The Way includes all the items listed in black on the menu -- ketchup, mayo, mustard, mushrooms, grilled onions, pickles, tomato, etc. Everything in black is free of charge; I'm guessing the items in red are extra. We orderd 2 regular burgers, a little bacon cheeseburger, regular fries, and regular cajun fries -- $21 I thought the burger was pretty filling; a fresh and delicious classic American hamburger. In n Out has a distinct taste with the spread they use inside; its also small and dainty in comparison to a Five Guys Burger. I've reviewed Five Guys before (Fremont location). Simply put, FG is on my fav list; and I-N-O is not. Wanted to add, for a grand opening day (today), at 8p, the line was out the door. However, the line moved QUICK, and orders came faster than expected. The place was packed. This location is nice because there's common tables outside. High Five to the developers of the complex. Parking, well, you need to know where to park and walk. You'll get there faster than someone circling around. When all the shops in this redeveloped stripmall is occupied, then let's see how parking really can be, but for now, parking at this complex isnt bad. And coupled with slow responding workers who don't get the orders right, this place is definitely not where I want to give my business. My boyfriend brought me here because this place is supposedly In-N-Out's rivalry in the bay area. We arrived on a rainy day, and as soon as we walked up to the store, all I could see is a sea of people waiting/eating inside. After I walked in and I started smelling freshly made hamburgers/fries that smell oh-so-familiar (seriously reminded me of In-N-Out) and I thought to myself, "Wow, this place must be amazing!" Then my boyfriend said their serving is slightly larger & that a regular order of fries can feed more than 2 people...okay, I guess the prices are starting to make sense if the sizes are slightly larger. I ended up getting a regular cheeseburger with all of the standard ingredients (my boyfriend ordered a regular cheeseburger...but somehow the cashier heard "large"...there's not even a slight resemblance between the 2 words! =T). We also ordered an order of regular fries...then it was a battle to find a table (and there's only 2 of us). We stood by and stared down at some people hoping we could scare them away, and finally a table for 2 opened up! =) Our food came pretty fast too, and I was pretty excited by then to actually taste my burger/fries! The first thing my boyfriend did was lay out all the fries on the bag so they're on a flatter surface (rather than standing in the paper cup) because apparently they start to get real soggy if you leave them in the cup...HMM... Then we started with our burger, mine was wrapped okay but the one my boyfriend got was REALLY runny/dirty and had oil/meat juice all over the place. I took my first bite and...nothing except pickles and meat. Well, all the ingredients were in the burger, but I literally only tasted pickles and the meat as I slowly finished my burger. The ingredients are bland. The bun was SUPER soft and lacks substance...by the end I have to hold on to my burger with my dear life because the bun is almost flattened to the thickness of a sheet of paper. The fries were pretty decent...but they didn't taste like anything special to me. They did provide unlimited peanuts (which I don't understand why!), but I didn't get to try any since we were pretty full by the end. Overall, the serving size is slightly larger than In-N-Out, which is reasonably priced (maybe over-priced considering the lack of flavor/taste). The advantage is that you get to customize the burger the way you want it to be, albeit the options are limited to what they have available. the hamburger patty is cooked well and the Cajun fries are really great. Their generosity is displayed by their willingness to provide all you can eat peanuts and extra fries at no added costs. Their style is loud and high-energy. I don't think this place should be compared to In 'n out as the patties are obviously different. The five guy burger has the quality of a good burger that you can find at any sit down restaurant. Similar in price with no long wait for someone to bring you your food. The burger has a nice juicy meat patty with a decent bun and condiments. Like subway you get the choose what condiments go on your burger and my rule is get no more than 5 because if you get everything, you can't taste the burger. The cajun fries are delicious but not knocking the regular fries either. Those are still good if you don't like the cajun ones. Also, it's AYCE peanuts. Just grab a tray and scoop as much nuts as you want. In 'n out is my goto usually but when I'm feeling hungry. I would swing by here every time. read more

A couple co-workers and I decided to check out Five Guys today, and were the first customers in the door. Five Guys does live up to most of the hype. But get there early, it's a horrible, crowded parking lot. For a regular cheeseburger, regular fries and a soda, it's 11 bucks. Sure, that's not a ton of money, but it's pretty pricey for fast food (they will probably claim to not be a "fast food joint"). The default burger at Five Guys is a actually a double, with nothing on it. You have the choice to pick between any of about 30 free toppings, which they will put on for you. The burger was very good, I like that grilled onions and grilled mushrooms are among the free toppings, that list isn't just "generic" lettuce, pickles and ketchup. I wasn't ready to be presented with all of these choices, and perhaps I didn't give enough thought to my toppings. The free peanuts while you wait are nice, and because they make everything fresh after you order, it does take a little while longer than you would expect to get your food. The fries are huge...can easily be shared by 2 or 3 people. They are good fries. One of my co-workers got the cajun fries, and they are even better than the regular ones. In comparison terms, it's a better burger than In-N-Out, but at twice the price...it's not twice as good. It's not as good of a burger as the Counter, but it is much less expensive. So perhaps it fills that happy medium in between those two. I'm looking forward to having a blind taste test between Five Guys, In-N-Out and a few others. My suggestion to Five Guys is move away from the naked burger thing, and come up with a standard sauce/veg combo. The naked burger is just missing a little bit of zing...and I think that a lot of people who are new to this place are going to order something that disappoints them. *** Upon further review, and after visiting In-N-Out, I must amend the above statements. Crazy fresh, delicious, juicy - money. But be warned: the "regular" burgers are actually double patty monsters, with a rather excessive meat ratio. After finally getting a chance in San Diego of checking out a Five Guys, I then learned that there's one not too far from the office - so today, several of us took off to go check it out. Walking in, same look/feel as the one in SD (as I pointed out there, kind of a cross between Fuddrucker's and In-N-Out). The line moved VERY quickly, and we placed our orders, moi (shocking, I know) a swiss/bacon burger (including the cajun fries...yum!). While ordering, I noticed one interesting little tidbit...there's a sign on the wall letting everyone know where today's potatoes came from. A piece of truly worthless information - the kind I like. :-) Our # was called, and grubbing down commenced. Same damned great burger (but smaller....I learned from the last visit...do NOT order the regular burger unless you are either an 18 year old male (with said metabolism) or weigh 450+). And same great cajun fries. This place IS a bit smaller, so you may want to avoid rush hours - but the line does move quickly, so presumably the table turnover does too. Not gonna come back anytime soon, the food just isnt that good. Yes its fresh and its quality ingredients, but the burger lacks flavor and isnt remarkable in any way. The fries are good but stomach feels a little weird afterward, i think its the chemical additives in the peanut oil - check the label on the boxes of oil. Little known secret - armadillo willy's (we go to the one in san mateo fashion island) has the best fast-casual burgers in bay area. Arrived at five guys from a recommendation from my great uncle. Five guys is like an upscale in n out where you can customize your burger with various toppings. The toppings are not a lot as there are only 13 toppings and three sauces. You can order different burgers (only four options). There are single patty burgers and double patty burgers. They are called little burgers for the single patty. We arrived early at around 11:30am and just beat the lunch crowd. I ordered the bacon burger which is a double patty burger. I ordered it with grilled onions and BBQ sauce. I also ordered fries which were ok but not super great. You have the option of getting small and large sizes of fries. The large fries serves about four people. You receive your food in a paper bag that you end up tearing to get to your food. You end up throwing away the bag since your food does not arrive on any type of tray. I guess they really don't care about the environment. Try it at least once since Obama brought his crew to the one in DC. This one is only a month old so I believe once the hype dies down, then this location will not be as busy. Parking is in the lot. It does get busy here and people tend to hog tables. There is outdoor seating as well but it is shared with Pizza My Heart, Panera Bread and Pinkberry. read more

I am not a huge fan of hamburgers. I will eat it if someone else wants to grab one, but I will never be the one suggesting it. I will, however, go to Five Guys just for their fries. Their burger buns are always soggy and falling apart, and I feel like I need to get "the works" + jalapeno + extra pickles + hot sauce just to build up some sort of flavor. I would much rather go to In-N-Out for a burger, especially since it is almost half the price of Five Guys. BTW their large order of fries has like 1200 calories. read more

I came in to get a Keto (no bun) burger today- Which I did- and it was great. Issue I have is that I have read everywhere that if you get a Bacon Cheese Burger with no bun, they will give you extra bacon and cheese for no charge if you request it. I asked the kid at the register today and he knew nothing about this? Is this the only location not offering this for those who order the BACON CHEESE BURGER? Disappointed only because it's being advertised everywhere that this is standard for keto burgers. Please let me know if I need to escalate this inquiry to the Branch Manager?. UPDATE: I reached out to the corporate office by email and received a clear response that ALL toppings are free- If you order a Bacon Cheese Burger, you can request extra bacon and cheese. BUT, if you order a plain burger, you will be charged for the Bacon and Cheese. It was just that the staff member who helped me that day didn't quite understand the policy so the management said they will make sure it is clear. Free peanuts! The burgers here are pretty big and have a soft spongy bread. I like that there's a good variety of free toppings. Everyone compares this to In N Out but I think the burgers here are a lot heavier. In N Out burgers definitely have a more crisp and fresh taste. A regular order of fries is topped off and is more than enough for two people. read more

Waited forever while several workers just stood around and talked. Order was wrong, burgers had soggy buns. The manager (skinny white guy) was unapologetic and clueless. Clear lack of leadership. Witnessed two other customers complain about Issue with their orders while I was waiting. read more
