But if I can make the exact same thing at home, why would I go out ? 1st time I came across Five Guy was in Washington DC and man were those guys rocking and rolling. It was packed and it was very very good. I have noticed that there is a huge difference between East Coast vs West Coast Operations for practically anything. I was mildly impressed with Five Guys. Let me first start by saying that I bought into the hype of this place, and made the drive from Santa Monica to T.O. to try it out. I wouldn't call it a wasted trip, as it was a fun drive through the canyons. We got there, and the place was PACKED. Line was wrapped around the restaurant. Parking was hard to come by. We almost didn't find a table to eat at. The burger WAS good. Fries WERE good. My friend got a grilled cheese and wasn't impressed. Would I eat here again? Yes. I did like the food. The amount of fries was astounding but we liked In n' Out fries better. One negative was the volume of the music - it was v-e-r-y loud in the eating area AND in the restroom it was blaring. Run, don't walk to 5 Guys. They are expanding into California (finally). Learned about 5 Guys from our son during a visit to Florida. A very, very simple menu, and if you remember to just get the (not so) Little Burger and a (not so) small order of fries (and split that between two of you), it's not all that nutritionally suspect. The burgers are perfectly cooked and juicy, their fries are done right and very fresh (there are 50 pound bags of raw potatoes lined up near the registers). When we went there on a Friday night at the Thousand Oaks store, they were doing a land-office business, so there may be a wait. They have a wide variety of toppings for the burgers. read more

Wen went there last night and got 2 little burgers and they were not worth the money we paid! No joke, we should have gone to McDonald's! Bun was old, burger had no season, onions were old, jalapeño was raw and bacon was soggy! All in all 2 little burgers were not worth the money! I really vacillated between 3 and 4 stars. Wish I could give 3 1/2. Their burgers and fries ARE delicious (I love when fries have some potato skin still on), but they're super greasy, and my taste buds tend to prefer beef when it's medium-rare. Like most affordable burger joints you've never going to get anything besides well-done. They are above In and Out in my opinion--I think In and Out's toppings, not the burger, are the key to their success--but below Smashburger. Good burgers! I ordered a cheeseburger and then a "little" bacon cheeseburger. I did not realize that the regular cheeseburger is a double and the little one is a single. The Little burgers are far from little, about 1/4 lb and the regular double is about 1/2 lb. Good flavor, fresh toppings, good flavor to the meat. The fries were yummy, fresh and good. But damn!!! They love to toot their own horn, don't they? The walls of this place are plastered with hundreds of their great reviews from almost every publication coast to coast. If you hype yourself up that much, people are going to have an unrealistic expectation of your product. Like some sort of reinvention of the burger. Too much hype, especially while waiting in line. One of my favorite places to get an extremely delicious burger. I love the add-ons too! Mushrooms, mayo, picked, onions, hot sauce, and much more. I like being able to customize my burger. OVER-RATED. Wow, I can't believe all the hype this place has drummed up. Congrats to their marketing and east coast bias reviews. Here is my Five Guys 10 step handbook for you: 1) "Junior" burger actually means regular burger. 2) Their regular burger is actually a double. The burger tastes good, but where in the world does a burger not taste good? 3) Get lots of napkins because once you take your burger out of the foil, it WILL fall apart at some point. The bun is not stable. 4) Do not fill up on their "free" peanuts, your meal will be huge. Why peanuts anyway?? 5) SHARE an order of fries with someone, even the smaller size comes in a big cup and they put the cup in a bag and fill the bag. 6) Do not get "cajun" fries. They just COVER every inch of your fries in some costco style red seasoning. 7) I asked for some sauce other than ketchup, they pointed me toward their vinegar in a bottle. Thanks. Don't bother asking. 8) Remember those "free" peanuts? Yes, your burger fries and soda just cost you TWELVE (12) DOLLARS. Nix the peanuts and lower prices please. (InNout same meal = 6 bucks) 9) They do have some alternative cool music playing while you eat. 10) They have a nice outdoor seating area. Next time I will order a "junior" burger and share my fries, that way I won't feel ripped off by a $12 meal and won't be as full halfway through cause of their free peanuts. I'll try a different combo of their various toppings as well. When I had this on the east coast, I was amazed and impressed by the "east coast inNout". Awwww, come on West Coast?! Only a 2.5 average for stars at this place?? My fellow yelper Desiree S. gave me background about Five Guys as we worked/studied at coffee bean one day and felt our tummies a rumbling for some lunch. A strong competitor for In n Out, I could see why the California love doesn't come so easy, but fellow yelpers you have to admit that good food is undeniable. The decor is simple just like In n Out with I believe bags of potatoes dividing their dining area and ordering line. Looking at the menu, you'll also be delighted to see the variety of burger accessories you get to choose from to outfit that burger you're about to chow down on! Jalepenos, mushrooms, bbq sauce and more! My friends and I set our sights on the "little bacon cheeseburger", which we weren't sure if we were going to really.. get a little burger, or that was just a cute name they pulled for the slightly smaller size. Totally right about the cute name thing. The "little" cheeseburger was perfect, not ridiculously huge but actually, I'd say just about the size of an In n Out burger! But.. WITH BACON :) We ordered a large cup of cajun fries and they were thick, fresh and the cajun seasoning was the right unique touch for the burger place. Yum Yum!! It is definitely a bit pricier than say, In n Out but I definitely think it's worth a try because of the more differences than similarities of what the burger joint offers. After hearing SO MUCH about this place we went to dinner there tonight and you know what....Eh it wasn't anything special. It seems like the entire place was designed to be mistaken for In 'N' Out burger, the decor etc. were nothing more than a knockoff! The burgers were okay, but do not even come close to a Double Double. The "Cajun" fries were undercooked, soft, floppy and without enough flavor to be considered Cajun in the first place! The option of additions to the burgers was a decent enough idea, the meat was of good quality and cooked well, but it seemed very amateur. It really seemed as though they were a brand new restaurant that was still tinkering with the process of preparing food for a large group of people! I also have to mention...there were a LOT of people here (I'm really not sure why), and it seemed like a living version of "People of Walmart" (If you don't know, look it up at peopleofwalmart.com), we had more fun watching the variety of persons entering the establishment than eating the food there!! It's okay here...nothing spectacular! I thought the burgers tasted like backyard BBQ burgers. It's cool you can get toppings for free, but the selection is less than at the Counter in Westlake...It's an In N Out Rip off for sure though. The ambiance reminded me of a high school cafeteria, especially with all the signage and posters (I was looking for the "NO RUNNING IN THE HALLS" sign and was waiting for the bell to ring!)...the layout of the seats was less than appealing as well, and it was loud! Their potato and peanut oil back stock can be found all around the dinning area which I guess is part of their carefree "look". You get free peanuts while you wait, which seems a little odd to me, and I would like it more if you could throw the shells on the ground like at the bball stadium... I did like the fries better though than In N Outs! Larger cut and softer. (Cajun available too!) It's nice they have hot dogs too for those that like em. I have to admit I will likely be back when I crave a simple backyard burger, just cause it's so close to my apt. It's nice to have a burger joint other than In N Out around...some healthy competition is good, right?! I can't imagine a burger joint will do THAT well here though with Fuddruckers not lasting long on the same corner practically, and the In N Out loyalty that is in abundance in this area....only time will tell. read more

5 Guys is more like 5 Pig Sty's - The place was filthy, obviously they are not concerned about a health rating. This place is more suited for the slums of Los Angeles, then for Thousand Oaks. Food was OK at best, however, buns got soggy in foil wrap. Also WAY overpriced - (2) burgers, (1) lrg frys, (2) waters = $17.00+. I'll stick with In n' Out, better burgers, better prices, better service and MUCH cleaner. - On the bright side, as with most restaurants that open in this area of the Janns Mall, with any luck, 5 Guys should be out of business by this time next year. read more

I've been here many times - and it gets 3 stars because it's not as great as they claim. The fries are good with sizable orders - but the prices are not exactly cheap. The 3 star limit is because they serve so few items compared to some competitors - and they're not impressing me with their food fare. The free peanuts do not make up for a lack of strength in other areas of enterprise. Service has always been good. After my husband heard so much about it, we decided to go try it. We spent almost $50 dollars for us two and our 3 little ones! After we paid our expectations were pretty high since we had just dropped a pretty penny on burgers. Well... they were only o.k, the burgers were pretty small and sloppy looking when we opened the wrapper. The fries were not very good either, we ordered the cajun fries which were WAY too seasoned and my son ordered regular which were not very good at all. This was my first visit to Five Guys. It was busy and too loud inside to consider eating inside the restaurant. My wife and I each got a single patty burger with our choice of toppings and a coke (no fries). I was surprised when the total came to over $15. We choose to eat outside due to the noise inside. I have never been here before but have read the reviews over the years since they came here. I don't know why there are so many complaints. I got the single patty bacon burger with lettuce tomato raw onions grilled mushrooms mustard mayo and ketchup and pickles. Unlimited toppings is quite a thing, considering the variety offered here, plus how other places are restrictive or gouge you for extras. The burger was juicy and fantastic. All the toppings were flavorful and distinct. The fries were their own personality, skin on. Slightly limp but tasty. Overly hyped restaurant, not impressed! Bad customer service and food was ok. Brandon the GM wasn't very helpful either. I was charged on my card and they said it didn't go through but charge is on my acct still. My BF and I had been wanting to try Five Guys since before they opened and since I rarely say yes when a burger joint is suggested for dinner...when Five Guys was the only viable option last week, I was HAPPY to give it a try! BF and I love In N Out burger and when we walked towards the door of 5 guys, you can see that at least in decor and ambiance, the restaurants are extremely similer. I also saw the grilled cheese or veggie sandwich on the menu, and got a little excited to try these. I ordered a Grilled Cheese with all the fixins. (I knew I should have gotten a burger!!) and my BF ordered a Cheeseburger. We got 1 large regular Fries to split. They served our meal to us in a bag. We were clearly sitting at a table with drinks and napkins and were not taking it to go. I pulled the dripping leaking foil wrapped sandwiches out of the bag wondering why they do not use trays. Do they? Moving on... I thought the grilled sheese was just not so good:( Too messy, heavy, nothing tasted really great! BF liked the burger, yet we both missed us some animal sauce!!!!!! We both liked the fries. BF would come back, I would have to think twice. Also the posters are a bit much. I mean we get it, people like you! The walls were PLASTERED. Too much expectation I think.... This place also offers peanuts and I guess you can throw the shells on the floor. I am not a fan.
