I've used Five Star Movers for three moves over the course of the past 7 years. Overall, they have been fantastic. Erika is very responsive and helpful. The booking process was easy. Their pricing is better than many companies. In every move, the guys showed up on time, were fast and efficient, and put everything where I asked. The only issue I have had is during my most recent move, they were backing the truck up into my driveway and backer into my porch, breaking the railing. I watched it happen, and so did the spotter, who inexplicably told the driver to keep backing up until he hit the railing. However, when I told them about the damage they were apologetic and came back right away to fix the railing (and did a great job fixing it). Looking at past reviews, it seems like everyone who hires them for local moves is happy, and people who have hired them for long distance moves are unhappy. I can say after 3 local moves that I would definitely use them again. read more

I had Five stars movers move my stuff from Rhode Island to South Carolina. They gave me a very decent quote, reasonably priced as compared to many other movers. Initially I was worried if I would get stuck with them or have lots of problems. Anyhow I went ahead and took my chances and I am glad that I did. PROS: Arrived on time for pick up. Worked very professionally and friendly staff. Carefully assembled and disassembled all my furniture. Reasonable price. All my stuff was intact, nothing got broken. My TV, Glassware, Kitchen utensils all were intact. No breaks on my furniture. CONS: They added like an extra 250$ on the day of pick-up which were charges for boxes and taping material they had used. (Expensive tape and boxes han!!) Anyhow that was expected and after reading reviews I kept that much margin. Even after adding that, the total charges were less for me than if I had gotten a uhaul and drove myself and had hired people to load unload stuff. They mentioned they will have my stuff delivered within 7 working days but took like 9 days. Anyhow no big deal, still well on time. Few things to be cautious about - Extra charges if you live on 2nd floor or have more than a flight of stairs. Also they deliver using 18 wheel trailer, make sure that fits into your apartment complex otherwise they charge like atleast 300$ more or so, but that was not an issue for us. I hired 5 Stars movers to help me with my local move (10 minutes drive). 1. The contract said that they will start at 8-9am, however, they called to notify that they will be coming at 12pm, then they called again notifying that they will be coming at 3pm, and finally they showed up at 5:30pm. I mentioned several times that my building does not allow moving after 5pm. The late move created a big issue with the building's management on that day. 2. By 9pm they placed everything in the track and drove to the new apartment, which was 10 minutes away, but did not unload the track. They said that they will come next morning at 7:30 am. They just gave me my mattress, so I was sleeping on it that night without a blanket. They drove with all my furniture from Queens to Bronx, where they waited till the next morning. 3. The next day they came back, but were moving things in very slowly. They would not assemble the couch together (actually the couch is still not screwed together) and were just waiting for time to go by, as they were working on an hourly basis. I noticed that my file cabinet and bed side table had a dent on it. 4. At one point the person in charge told me that they will stop the clock and asked me to pay upfront - the price was USD1,020. I mentioned that there are a couple of broken pieces and we agreed that the price will be USD860. He agreed, asked for cash, so I gave it to him. After 5 minute he returned money back to me and said that since I want a discount, they will continue "working" as hourly to charge me more. 5. They were just sitting in the basement and not moving things inside my apartment. They would not give my belongings to me until I paid them - the next time he asked 1,060. I paid. 6. After they left, I discovered that half of my other furniture has been damaged - kitchen table (that I asked many time to be careful with) had a big dent, cracked mirror, furniture scratched all over, broken plates, one clothing box was not returned- I saw that it was broken into pieces, so they left it in the track. When I called asking to submit insurance claims for these items, they just told me to get lost. Very bad experience! I wish I read their reviews earlier. read more

Terrible customer service, we were waiting 4 extra weeks for our belongings, to give you a quote they call you every hour but to give you a reason why is taking to much time they don't answer the phone, plus moving from MA to CA they use a freaking monster trailer bigger than the regular size and of course they can't get into the property due to the size and they charge you 300 more and the worst is that after all the claims they say that they are gonna give you a discount check that never happen. PROS: great movers and drivers CONS: terrible customer service, delivered a week late, lost one of my chairs The only reason this business is getting 2 stars instead of 1 is because the actual movers and the driver were great. They worked quickly, and took care of my items. They were even able to disassemble and reassemble my particle board bed that I was sure would never be able to be put back together (and without instructions nonetheless). The real negatives here come in the customer service. I moved from Boston to Chicago and needed two days notice of when my items would arrive so I could make the drive. I had to call the office daily to try to get any kind of advance notice and when I finally did, they gave me a three day range of when it would arrive. When my items were delayed, they did not reach out to me to inform me, I found out by calling and asking why I hadn't heard from a driver yet. They did provide a discount for the delay but it was a measly $25/day, totaling to $175. This was a pretty crap discount for someone who had been sleeping on an air mattress for over a week and had run out of clothes due to Five Stars lack of communication. This company consistently tells you "we will call you back in an hour" or "we will email you tomorrow" etc. That promise never rang true, I had to call them back every time. UPDATE: It has been a week since my movers delivered my things, and I have still not gotten any resolution in terms of the lost chair. read more

Update: My items have been received at an additional $300 dollars above what I was quoted initially. This is where I repeat, read the fine print. It is written into their contract but no one is up front about the surcharges. In total I paid an additional $416 above my quoted price. The movers were communicative once they were in Seattle which was helpful and they did accommodate an earlier morning move time for me but all of the freestanding unboxed furniture was damaged and some items appeared to have been wet at one point or another because a lot of the fabric is discolored now. It is over and we are settling in. I can not speak to a local move but I would definitely evaluate all options for a long distance move and look at what is important to you (especially if you have valuable furniture or are on a time restraint due to work or life circumstances). Read the other long distance reviews as well as I think many of us have encountered the same scenarios. I would not recommend using them on a long distance move. read more

Would strongly advise against using five star movers. While the movers were professional and friendly, I ran into some issues post move. I unpacked my boxes to find several of them containing shattered dish and glassware. Even though they were marked "Kitchen - FRAGILE" the movers clearly didn't handle them correctly. When I contacted the company regarding the issue, they made me go through a tedious claim process only to tell me that since the movers didn't physically pack and unpack my boxes, the company was not liable. For the record, the items were individually wrapped and "unpacking" consisted of merely opening the top of the box. So unless you're going to pay to keep the movers for another couple hours so they can pack and unpack the boxes, I would look elsewhere. read more

Absolutely terrible. DO NOT HIRE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES! Tony Escobar, the president, and our driver Hernando were both extremely unprofessional. We were even hung up on, and then they just started hanging up all our calls and not answering period - ON THE DAY THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO ARRIVE. First of all, we specifically requested 48 hours notice, which we did not get. They called the wrong phone number the evening before saying they were coming the next morning. We forced them to change to the next day since we weren't in town, and the window was 7-8 am. We call at 7 am to check in, apparently the truck was having maintenance done and they would be now delivering from 1-2 pm. When I asked why they didn't notify us, they said because they didn't have our number. HOW WAS THE DRIVER GOING TO CALL US WHEN HE ARRIVED THEN? I called the office on a Sunday and the woman who answered told me the office is closed! Their website says open 7am-8pm EVERY DAY. You'd have a better time throwing your stuff away than hiring this company. At least you'd know where it is. read more

This was my first time using a mover during a move. As I was researching movers online the price was important to me. I reached out to several moving companies and five star movers gave me the lowest estimate. After using them, I found out you get what you pay for. As I was getting estimates, most moving companies had me taken an accurate inventory of what I was moving, down to how many boxes and what size they were. Five star movers completed a cursory inventory, but did not get down into the specifics. They cared about the large items but did not care about smaller items such as boxes. Because they did not obtain an accurate inventory I ended up paying significantly more than the initial estimate. When the movers showed up to my house, they loaded up the truck with all of my possessions and only after loading did day tell me that I had more items than they expected and they would charge an additional fee due to the additional time required to load those items. At this point, all of my items were loaded onto the truck so I had no choice but to pay the extra money. My original quote was for $1200, after the additional Visa that went up to almost $2000. This brought their estimate from the cheapest estimate I had to a cost much higher than any other estimate I had received. Had they spend more time getting an accurate inventory, like all the other moving companies did, they would have been able to give me a more accurate estimate, and in this case, I would have gone with the moving company that had a cheaper rate. I was given no instructions about what had to be put into boxes prior to the move. I had items such as mops, brooms, and other large items that were awkward to put into a box left out. The movers started to take boxes they had brought and put these items in them. They then charged high prices for the packing items that they had used. I would've never thought that you would want to put a broom into a box, but they did. Had I known this I would have put them in boxes myself to avoid the additional charges. Not only was the estimate off, but during the move two coffee tables were damaged. One of them had heavy boxes sitting on top of one of the legs in the leg cracked, the other had it scuff marks and scratches on the surface after the move. The total for the items damaged was approximately $500. When the movers initially came they told me what their insurance policy was. The Insurance policy was weight-based. Basically, they would give a certain amount of money per pound for the item that was damaged. This does not take into consideration the actual value of the item. The insurance claim is handled by a third-party vendor and their website is very difficult to use. Once I finally had everything submitted, it was weeks before hearing anything back. The total settlement came to $51, nowhere close to the $500 that it would cost to replace the damaged items. Also, the website was very difficult to use to submit the claim. Given that I was unhappy, I called Erika who I have been working with to set up this move. She referred me to her manager. I explain to him how Erika did not get an accurate inventory of my items which then led to an estimate that was significantly lower than the actual move cost. He said he would go back through the records and listen to the tapes to see what the conversation entailed and he would get back to me, but felt that he had done nothing wrong and there would be no adjustment in my total moving expenses. He never followed through and got back to me. I also discussed with him the insurance claim and how low the settlement was when compared to how expensive the items that were damaged were. He told me that once and settlement was figured out with the insurance company, he personally reviews the settlement and will adjust the price as He deemed fit. He usually would increase the settlement based on the items damaged. When the check came in the mail for the settlement, no adjustment was made. Based on the initial customer service with Erika, the loan estimate, and the good yelp reviews I felt I had found a good moving company. It was only after things started to go wrong did I realize I should have gone with another moving company. In the end, I spent over $1000 extra in moving costs and to replace the damaged items then if I had gone with another company and through my discussions with five star movers they seem to feel they have done nothing wrong and don't care about their customers because they received their money to cover them. I would not use them again or recommend them to anyone. read more

Although I have used them in the past and had satisfactory results, this year they SUCKED. They called to ask me to reschedule my move-in date the day before I was supposed to move out (Sept. 13) as a favor to them. (WTF?) Since I had reserved this date and time three weeks in advance I was a little put-off. Plus, I had already reserved the elevators in my building and was unable to reschedule that. So Sunday comes around (my move in date) and they weren't just late. They didn't show up at all. Their office is closed on Sundays and there was no contact information for me to reach anyone. They didn't even call me to let me know that they weren't showing up. They are really unprofessional and shouldn't be in the moving business if they expect their clients to rearrange their schedules last minute. What a waste of my time and energy. read more

These guys moved my 1 bdrm apt into their truck in about 15 minutes, and then carried all my stuff up 4 flights of stairs to my new apt... no elevator... i was IMPRESSED to say the least. They couldnt get a few things up here, but that is the fault of the narrow stairs i think, not theirs. Horrible! I reserved the 5 star movers on Movinghelp.com after renting a uhaul. They were supposed to arrive at 9am......I called the office at 9:15am and the phone operator said that she spoke to them at 8:30am and they were prolly just running late. Then 9:30am rolls around and still they are not there! I call again and the operator states that the lead crew's phone is NOW TURNED off. OMG, so I ask if she can send another crew and she said no. I asked if she could call another company and she said it was not possible. So the story goes....the 2 movers I hired never showed up. They thing that really annoyed me is that they did not have the decency to call the office and let them know to contact me! The weird thing is that there were 2 movers I hired....both of their phones were shut off?! My suggestion is to stay away from 5 star movers. read more

We did a full house-to-full house move (within the same town) last Saturday. We shopped around for quotes and Five Stars was BY FAR the least expensive option so we went with them. I will admit that I was nervous to use a low-cost mover that I'd never heard of or used before. However, I didn't need to worry because the 3-person moving team was fantastic! They got all items that were ready to move out of our old house and into our new house very efficiently and were pleasant throughout their time with us. I had to move from the Boston area to Austin TX. I found Five Stars Movers through the Unpakt website. By calling FSM directly, I was able to get a lower quote on moving my 2 bedroom townhouse. I spoke to Erika and she was very nice and helpful. Setting up the move out time was simple and the movers came on time. They worked very hard and fast to disassemble my furniture. A couple screws for my bed were lost in the process but that's no biggie. My furniture arrived about 9-10 days later by Benny's Moving whom I guess FSM contract with. They did an alright job unloading however they didn't throw away the tape and wrapping and left it in a pile outside the house. Overall my experience was fine and I recommend this moving company given the following points. 1. They are inexpensive given the quality of the move, as long as you are willing to have your stuff arrive between 1-2 weeks. 2. Keep an accurate inventory and update them of it before the movers come. They will charge you extra for the stuff you forget 3. They don't include packing materials in their estimate so budget 10% extra for that. buy your own mattress and box spring covers. read more

The absolute worst! If you have any sense at all don't use them. They are sleazy and they lie, also forget about customer service it does not exist. I had a whole box of antique glassware half of which was broken. I am not completely unpacked and dread what shape my china is in. I was moving from NY to SC, they packed my things on 8/12/19 and the truck was still sitting in Boston on 8/25/19. They assured me my things would be here on 8/15/19. They, as in the people that pack your things tell you one thing and at the end you get a receipt stating they have 10 days. The whole operation is a total scam. I had to contact the MA Attorney General to get anywhere. I am handicapped and had to rent a power wheelchair, have emergency meds shipped overnight and buy a bath chair. I had to spend $700 out of pocket and then they had the nerve to tack another $300 on to my bill. They did damage to my apartment moving the furniture in and just shrugged their shoulders. If you decide to use them for the price just know you will pay later in additional fees and broken items that you may not ever be able to replace. Five stars for five star movers!!! I had them hoist a sofa up to my 4th floor apartment in the North End. They picked the sofa up from the furniture store and then brought it to my apartment. It started with 3 men and then 2 other guys showed up (think managers/owners) to help them. They did a great job and were very possitive with this difficult move. I wish I had hired them for my move into my apartment. I will be using them for any future moves. The cost was only $20 more then I was quoted. (which was the cost of tape). If you've used movers in the past you know that is pretty incredible!! They did not charge me extra for the extra men that showed up. When getting the quote on the phone I did ask the woman, "is this the absolute highest price it will be?" The price did increase so I suggest you ask that. I learned my lesson in previous moves that their are many "hidden" costs. Very professional, very nice, respectful and honest. I'm very impressed!!! read more

Just AWFUL. Scheduled a move for an 11AM pick-up and noon delivery. They showed up at 8:30AM & told me if they didn't take the furniture then I was out of luck. We arrived up at our destination at noon as expected. After sitting on bare floors for 4:15 minutes they finally showed up. I called 3 times. Also paid $150 for a parking permit and they didn't even use the spot. When they were loading the truck they flipped brand new armoire upside down to unscrew the legs. They were glued on! Which I promptly told them. Upon arrival two of the legs fell off and they asked ME if I had wood glue to glue the legs back on. I sent the dispatcher an email over 1 week ago and he's still ignoring me. Also overcharged me by at least 1 hour and charged for 10 rolls of tape. All of the boxes were already taped. I have used 5 star movers to go from Massachusetts to Florida. First off be very careful who you use. The hidden charges and if things get lost or broken The workers who came and packed us were very hard workers. The contract we signed needed to be read thoroughly. I moved in December 2018. I never imagined it would take almost 30 days for my things. When it finally arrived 2 antique chairs were broken. The people at 5 star would answer the phone but would say we will get back to you. The movers lost my bedrails for our bed. After many phone calls. They found the rails. In January they told me I would get the rails on the next truck. January and February went by. More phone calls. I was finally told they had no trucks coming to Florida. I asked for a manager. I told him to send it by ups or FedEx. He agreed. Nothing another 3 weeks. More phone calls. I was told ups or FedEx will not take it. I was so furious. I was told it will be on the next truck to Florida. A week and a half later it arrived. So from dec 2 to March 10th. No money back for inconvenience. No apology. I would avoid this company. Get everything in writing. The moving industry is not regulated. I will also file a complaint to the bbb. read more

I had to move very quickly, and after getting a few quotes, it seemed like Five Star was the best option. The woman I spoke with to book the move was very helpful, and provided me with a lot of information and tips I did not even consider. The movers came within the specified time, and everything went very smoothly. The movers were very nice and efficient, and took great care in moving all of my belongings. I had an out of town move, and again, everything went smoothly with that. The cost was also right where they quoted me, so there were no surprises there. All in all, a very positive experience. I had a great experience with this company. They moved my wife from Princeton, NJ up to Boston and did a very nice job. Highlights: - Very efficient/fast. - Excellent job securing the furniture. Just looking for some form of refund for the hassle. There were two issues: 1) Pick-Up Date: On my pick-up date (confirmed via phone and email), no one showed up. The price is right with Five Star Movers. I was quoted a price and ended up needing an extra hour of work. The price for an additional hour was as quoted and the guys were great. The only reason I am not giving them five stars is that I had to talk them into trying to get my sofa up to the 4th floor of my new condo. The mover tried to tell me it wouldn't work and wasn't worth my time. I told him I just wanted them to try and that I was paying for it. They were right, the couch was too big, but I would have liked to have simply been asked. I know this is picky. I moved from Cambridge to Maryland, and five star movers did a very good job. None of my items was damaged. The movers arrived on time both for pick up and drop off. Pros: Reliable Careful Polite Cons: This is all in the fine print, so I was not overcharged for anything, and this is not a complain, but a word of caution: Make sure your online inventory is VERY ACCURATE when you get your quote. Be prepared for add-ons if you haven't entered everything 100%. You will be charged for every additional box and packing material. There is also a $75 elevator fee. I was a little apprehensive about signing on with five star movers given recent less than stellar reviews but the price was hard to beat so I took my chances. The team on both ends were professional and handled my items with care. The delivering team especially went above and beyond by re-assembling most of my larger pieces of furniture and also making sure everything was exactly where I wanted it. There was a 1.5 hr delay in the delivery time we had scheduled 2 days prior. They had mentioned 8-10. I called at 9 to check-in and was then told it will be 11 instead due to traffic. They arrived at 11:30. This was more than made up for by the pros listed above. From reading past reviews, it sounds like the experience is very dependent on the employees actually assigned to each move. Some consistency will probably help the business. I hired 5 star movers for a move from NH to CT on March 1.. The guys were 2 hours late, without a call. Then proceeded to move my things. They were nice enough, but when we got to the destination they ripped a leather couch that was 3 months old, scratched or broke a coffee table, 2 end tables, a couch table, and a wine rack. They scratched up my bedroom set. And in the process of the move they scratched the hell out of my hard wood floors. I filed a claim, which is a total joke, the company they use CSI Pros in Florida, likes to make believe they didnt get your paperwork so they cant even process it (4 times I sent it to them along with pictures of all the damage. First of all it's per pound (my own fault) which wont replace a coffee table, and since my landlord is having his own guys doing the floors and billing me, I cant include that in my claim. Avoid the aggravation and dont use these guys, you cant win any way around. read more

We consigned with Five Stars Movers after getting 5 other quotes. They were low bid. So we decided to go with them. Once on site they added multiple documents and fine print charges and want to charge more once we began. They were efficient in the loading of our already boxed items and protected other items of office furnishings. We were originally promised delivery on July 18th when the truck was packed on July 11th by 12:30AM. It is Thursday the 24th no apologies or customer service. I have been promised call backs that have never been received. I am waiting upon another call back now. read more

Pretty much the only good thing I have to say about these movers is the price, and given that they lost one of my boxes with valuable items in it, it was not worth it. When I called around, Five Star gave me the most affordable estimate. Erika was reasonable on the phone, but she doesn't do the moving, and doesn't control when the movers actually show up. For my pickup in Worcester, the movers were hours late. They did not call me to tell me they were coming late. When I called the office, I was assured they would be arriving in 10 minutes. Another hour later, they had not shown up. They eventually showed up and put my things into their truck. A few days later, a driver called me to tell me he was driving to CA, and I could expect my items in 5-8 days. At least I think that was what he said - he was very difficult to understand. He FINALLY called me 7 days later, to say he would arrive the following day, between 11 and 2. Then he called at 1:30pm, to say he would arrive at 6pm. He finally showed up at 8pm, many many hours after originally promised. When he finally arrived, in a much larger truck than was used to pick up my stuff, he insisted that he could not bring it close to the building (despite an option to do so), and would charge me for a long carry. He left me no choice but to pay him extra money, or he would keep my items. When, after taking everything out of their truck, and realizing that they were missing a box, they had me come and check the truck for the box, which was nowhere to be found. The driver assured me it would be in the warehouse in Boston, but thus far it has not shown up, and I was advised to file a claim with their third party insurance company. Finally, they left balls of used tape and other packing materials in various spots around my apartment and hallway. I guess the moral of the story is you get what you pay for, but i certainly did not get the service described in the other Angie's list reviews. read more
