Mango marg was great, and I loved the runny (not chunky) and spicy salsa paired with the hot and fresh corn tortilla chips. But that is all I loved....the tacos were really a miss...which is too bad because the price is right and this downtown location is great. I came here with two friends after the bar looking for a place that was still open after 10, and this was the closest place. Dating a Mexican has made me a little more picky about eating Mexican food so I wasn't too impressed with the food here. I ordered two steak tacos which had plenty of toppings but the meat itself was dry and lacking seasoning. Thankfully there were salsas that could be added on top. The price wasn't bad and the staff was extremely friendly and polite despite us arriving close to closing time. Not the best tacos I've had, but I do love the space of Flaco's Tacos. Very cozy. I had the fish and al pastor taco. Definitely would recommend the al pastor - the pork was tender, and the pieces of pineapple added a fresh kick to the flavor-heavy filling. The taco shells were subpar for me, but they give you a pretty generous portion of the filling. One thing I really liked was the chips (they were warm and fresh!) the fish taco was good too, but not one of the best I've ever had - just average. We stopped here is n our way back from MCA. It was not busy, but that's what we were hoping due to Covid. They have a great selection on their menu. My husband and I have dietary restrictions and we're easily able to find something that works for us. We shared a chicken bowl without the rice and thoroughly enjoyed it. Please do not order from Flacos Tacos ever. This place is horrible. We ordered their Nachos Nachos Nachos and got the Taco Combo with a side of Guacomole and chips and it was bad. We have ordered from here in the past and decided to give Flacos another shot and this time was the last straw. Everything tasted like a burnt smokey mess. The food looked sloppy and the Guacamole was watery and smelled like the inside of a garbage disposal. I called to get a refund and the general manager and store manager denied the request because they "tasted" the beans and other items and it was good to them. Who says that to customers??! Went here for happy hour cause I thought they had $3 tacos. Lets just say the internet was wrong. The info needs to be updated. On Monday they sell $3 frozen margaritas. It is a small place. Alot of young people due to being in a college area. Good customer service. Clean. But I did have a problem with a few big ass knats around my table. TL;DR You couldn't ask for a better quick bite to eat, especially considering the price. Two three-taco meals, guac and chips for $30. That's a steal for the quality considering you're right off the Magnificent Mile. The tiny hole-in-the-wall places are the ones that tend to have the greatest risk/reward. This place we nestle safely in the "reward" column. Clean, simple decor. Definitely designed for function over fashion but still able to charm you. Guacamole and house chips were both served fresh and on par with any good Mexican restaurant. Could've been spicer, but for mild guac, it was mixed to perfection as to not overload you with the heavy avocado taste. Between my partner and I we ordered steak, fish, and chicken standard tacos and one cowboy taco. Meats were all seasoned well and tender, but the star of the show was the steak tacos. Great both as is it and with the added toppings to turn it into a cowboy, I couldn't imagine ordering anything else going forward. The fish taco was good, albeit ours was a bit over-embellished with slaw. If you aren't into red meats I would suggest it over the chicken (which was good in its own right, but didn't stand out nearly as much as the steak and fish). I've been to the Flaco's in the South Loop on Dearborn countless times, so after the Lights Festival this past Saturday, walking down Chicago ave, I was desperately looking for somewhere to eat. I usually get tacos from here but this time I wanted to try something different. Then, it caught my eye...they got pozole here!! Oh my goodness, it was amazing. Chicken, cilantro, avocado, tomatillos, onions...it was a legitimate party in my mouth. Such a perfect meal to eat on an unseasonably cold night. What keeps this place open is the fact that there are very limited options for Mexican fare remaining in the neighborhood. I have worked in this neighborhood for 30+ years and have experienced fantastic Mexican restaurants in the past, this is not one of them (oh I long for the days when we had Salvador's, Mucho Gusto, tacobell). Plus they've posted that they open at 10:30 ... well their doors may unlock at that time but never are they ready to serve. Many times when I arrive at that time I always receive an apology that they just opened and is not quite ready and I need to wait longer than normal. It's a revolving door and the line gets long, but it moves rather quickly. This establishment is very small. You pay as you go and they have daily specials. The dessert on the other hand, I love red velvet, but this one was kind of dry like cornbread, otherwise, Kudos Flaco! I wouldn't mind returning in the future. Came on Friday late afternoon and had no trouble finding seating for 5 in their smallish dining area. This is a very casual restaurant where you order at the counter, they bring it to you and then you bus your own table before leaving. Prices were reasonable as well and along the lines of a panera or chipotle. I went with one of their specials, carne asada fries and it was large enough for 2 people, they even gave me two forks! It was delicious although it could have used some spice from a salsa or sauce that was not provided. I also ended up ordering a Jaimica which was a delicious iced tea type drink. They are known for their specials corresponding to the day of the week and if I lived here I would definitely try to return to try them all. This place is in walking distance to the Museum of Contemporary Art and is the perfect stop to fuel up pre or post museum visit. read more
