I had an Al Pastor taco and a pork tamale. The taco was ok. The tamale is the best I've had in a restaurant. I'm from Texas and I've tried my share. First, it was enormous. Second, it had a great ratio of filling to maize. Last, I was not expecting it to be any kind of spicy and the kick was a wonderful surprise. I loved the the prices weren't bad, the location is great, and the service was fast and friendly. I had the "Traditional Tacos" for $2.95 each and they were pretty good. Absolutely horrible service today. Ordered two tacos to go & it took over 15 minutes, AND I WAS THE FIRST IN LINE. The staff was too busy putting together Postmates/online orders to the point where they clearly forgot about me. When I saw food come out for people who ordered much, much after me, I was furious. I like coming here because they're a lot less expensive than most taco places in Chicago. Although their tacos aren't the best and very simplistic, I like that simplicity. I always get the al pastor tacos. This time around, the meat was a little tough but still flavorful. The tortillas were warm but a little tough. I would have preferred softer tortillas. The shrimp tacos, which are supposedly a special every Friday, are pretty good, especially for someone that likes tacos, but can certainly live without them. While these definitely had their share of sodium in every bite, they were fresh, tasty, with yummy shrimp that stole the show over the contents of each taco. The place is packed and popular, so forget having a leisurely or quiet meal. We ordered our tacos, sat down, ate and left. Not a bad lunch choice for 10 bucks and I could see going back for the shrimp tacos. However, if you're expecting something different or unusual, I'd probably try elsewhere. read more

I popped in here for a late lunch. Ordering process was fast and easy for me even as a first timer. I took my number and sat at the bar. A few minutes later my three chicken tacos arrived along with two bottles of sauce one red and one green. The tacos were very good. Tasty tortillas which held up well and were the right thickness. Went on Sunday at 8pm. We ordered 9 tacos of 3 different types and all came cold. No I am not saying the cheese was not melted, that's ok, I am saying it was room temperature at best. I had to ask them to microwave them. Much better above room temp. Tamales where really poorly made, ours had the meat on one side and corn on the other, totally separate. Flacos Tacos is a great option for quick and tasty Mexican food in Chicago's Mag Mile! It is conveniently located, near the Chicago/State L stop and Michigan Avenue. The menu is simple and affordable, with fast service. I've had the burrito ($8.45) and taco combo ($8.86 w/ tax). The burrito is loaded and is quite large, it can definitely feed two people. It is stuffed with meat, rice, beans, lettuce, tomatoes and sour cream and comes with two different salsas. Tacos are similar, double wrapped with corn tortillas, served with only meat, cheese and onions. The lime-grilled steak is tasty, tender and well seasoned. The ancho chicken is well cooked but is less flavorful (more plain) than the steak. Best part, all options are super affordable - expect a satisfying meal for under $10! Also, try the horchata ($2.95) yum! My only gripe is their use of cilantro. You're either one of two people, I know... I appreciate cilantro as a small highlight but Flaco's goes a bit overboard. On the tacos the cilantro was the only greens, so they placed a 'lettuce-amount' of cilantro on them which overpowered the whole thing. So if you have any doubts, ask for no cilantro. Flaco's Tacos hits the spot when I'm craving tacos or a burrito. The menu is smaller and straightforward so it's nice for grabbing lunch. The entrance to businesses on that strip of Chicago Ave are tucked away up past the stoop so just look for the Flaco's Tacos sign hanging outside the window to find which door to enter. I usually go with the taco combo: 2 tacos with rice and beans for around $8 after-tax. The al pastor is my go-to meat choice but the chicken is also very good! The burritos are huge! However, all the rice was on one half of my burrito so once I got to the other half, there was no rice left. They serve margaritas too! i've never had one but they look tasty. There's also a special item each day, which is listed on their website. Service can be a bit slow sometimes. It's not the same service speed of fast-casual places. There's seating inside the place but also some outside on the sidewalk. I like to grab tacos from here over some of the other spots when I'm in the neighborhood. read more

I come here for taco Tuesday, where their special taco is $1 (what a steal!). Last time, I got the ancho chicken, al pastor, and their special mango chicken taco. Although it was busy, the food came out quickly, and they were generous portions. I was more than stuffed after 3 tacos! The tacos were flavorful, and all had double tortillas so it wasn't as messy as could be. Overall, not bad tacos for the prices!! And their margaritas are bomb too ;) It is a smaller place, and there is limited first come first serve seating, so it does get crowded. My boyfriend lives above this restaurant and I couldn't be happier about it. We order from here at least once a week and have tried almost everything on the menu and never once have been disappointed. The staff is super nice and accommodating. We've made multiple special requests while ordering and they always get it right. The best item in my opinion is the street corn chicken taco, but honestly everything is so amazing. Dollar tacos for Mexican Independence Day brought me in, but I wouldn't be against paying full price. Both their pescado and al pastor we're tasty and decently proportioned too. The chicken was a tad dry, but I didn't notice after dousing with their delicious salsa verde. They do daily specials and serve beer so all in all it's not a bad spot for a quick lunch or early dinner. I wouldn't exactly trek across town to dine here though. Then again if you're trekking across town to dine at a taco shop something might be wrong with you. They get an extra plus for having a game on the back of their order numbers, so all in all I'm scoring them a 3 and a half. Def worth a shot. read more

Working somewhat late nights lately has me doing the take-out route or grub-hubbin' (www.grubhub.com) it. I was actually heading to Soupbox but kept going when I saw the sign ("and it opened up my eyes..."*): Flacos Tacos. Anyway, the place has limited seating but at the time wasn't crowded. I can only imagine how packed this place looks during lunch. (If you've been to Jimmy John's or Soupbox nearby, seating is almost exact to theirs). Having been to the Printers Row location once or twice before, I thought their chicken tacos were pretty good. I ordered one as well an order of the chips and salsa. I think my memory is going because I thought the chicken taco was a little bland. I should have gone with a torta or taco salad, but I'll be back. The chips came in a huge to-go container, and the red salsa came in a soup container thing. That salsa has a spicy kick to it. My eyes were watering and mouth was on fire...in a good way! Eh, a cheap quick dinner was all I cared about and that's what I got: $2.50/taco and $2.50 for the huge order of chips/salsa. Other things to note: (a) They also have a huge display case of desserts: cupcakes (what place now doesn't), tres de leche cake, carrot cake, flan, and other pastries I was drooling over but cannot remember now. (b) Check out the "specials of the day" sign by the cashier. I was too distracted by the desserts to even realize it was there. Oh well. Quick and tasty. Really nice mixed tacos (mexican and american styles). Not too mexican since still they add cheese to the tacos and salsas are not too spice. The drinks and salsas were watered down. The pozole was super water down and almost not corn kernels on the soup. Place well decorated including the Corona beer table as the mexican countryside. Yum! Yum! Yum! The food here is delicious. I couldn't make up my mind when I came in so I ordered 3 Tacos to try as much as possible; Chicken, Steak, and Al Pastor. Each was tasty, came served with a healthy portion of cheese and onions, and was wrapped in 2 corn tortillas. The tortilla was the final touch that tipped me over the edge, they were authentic, filling, and my mouth is watering just thinking about them now. Please don't ask me to pick a favorite because I liked them all. The chips and guac are another must have here; the chips are fresh and are tortillas that are fried and cut up. This was a pleasant surprise when they arrived at the table, which made them taste even better. The food came quickly after we ordered and the pitchers of water on the side were a nice touch. My only complaint is that the weather wasn't nice enough to take advantage of the tables outside. Can't wait to come back on a nice summer day. read more

OH MY GOSH! I love this place. SO GOOD!!!! If you like tacos, you will love flacos tacos. My boyfriend and I stumbled upon this restaurant when we were staying down the street at a hotel. We were starving and needed food ASAP. Now that we live here, we frequent this restaurant very often. I'm a fan of the chicken tacos, while boyfriend loves the fish tacos, flaco bowl, and nachos. The chips and guacamole are delicious. The chicken tacos are moist and seasoned to perfection. They're best served with cilantro, onion, and the green salsa. Actually, that green salsa is good on everything. I would take a bath in that salsa if I could. And it gets better! They serve alcohol!!! Whooo! Margaritas are pretty good, i like the mango or just lime one. And one time we got free guacamole, so they are really nice too! I will continue to come to flacos for the rest of my life. I have only eaten at Flaco's on Tuesdays strictly for their $1 tacos and the quality varies from one visit to another. It feels like a casino when I visit because the $1 tacos aren't advertised outside of the small chalkboard by the cash register so some Tuesdays can be a disappointment if you walk in and spot sweet potato tacos on the board, but often times the tacos have a favorable protein like chicken, carnitas, or chorizo! Regarding the varying quality comment, I've had chorizos that were as dry as dust and to salvage my $1 I had to squeeze the bejesus out of the complimentary lime to moisten the taco. On a brighter note, the ground beef taco was the best so far - good quantity and quality, making it a steal for the price. Overall, I like the concept, the price, and the food. I went into this place sheerly out of it's convinience. Steak tacos are what I crave and a good one is worth the journey and the cost. This place is only worth the journey and this is not to say the food wasn't good. The tacos were so so. Meat was mildly seasoned but it was real steak and and only comes with cheese, onions and cilantro. This is something I'm not used to. When they said, "With everything", I assumed there would be some lettuce and tomato dancing around in there...somewhere but none. Portions were O.K. I'm mostly rating Flaco's on the basis of the burrito I had. It was only OK or even less. Here are the issues I had with it: - The tortilla/wrap was very flimsy and crumbly. It was flaking and falling apart and pretty thin, except in one small spot where there was a ton of folded tortilla. This made for a very messy experience. Things were dripping out of the bottoms (it was cut in half, so there were two bottoms). I had to resort to using knife and fork and plenty of napkins. - The pork filling was nicely cooked, but kind of bland. I really liked how tender the meat was, but had to use plenty of green sauce, which made it OK. - The rest of the filling was mostly sour cream/crema with a little cheese and cilantro. This added little to the flavor but lots to the mess. I'm becoming desperate in finding a burrito with beans and rice in it. Chipotle is not really an option. The burrito was a bit of a let down, so why 3 stars and not lower: the staff was very friendly and the service is great. The horchata is pretty good, although the color is kind of light. The frozen margaritas looked good and lots of people had them on this unseasonably warm evening, so maybe the burritos are just not the main specialty here. Bottom line - it's a nice place, but try something besides the burrito. Also if you know where I can get good burritos with beans and rice, let me know. read more

Flaco's, oh precious Flaco's... where do I begin? Okay, I am from down south where Mexican food is AUTHENTIC. I take my Mexican food seriously almost to the point where it could sound annoying. Keep that in mind with this review. I was looking for a Mexican place that delivers, and this place definitely does. Late too. Call them. Order online. Parachute in. They take it all. I am the laziest of the lazy so I chose my delivery to happen via the internet. I placed my order which they said would take something like 60 minutes, but was actually more like 15. Maybe even less. Lightening fast. Probably flew on the wings of angels. Anyway. What sucks, is... well.. the food. KINDA. Okay, the chicken tacos are pretty good, but they don't even have 2 of the MOST CRUCIAL aspects of Mexican dining for me... QUESO, and ENCHILADAS. NONE. Neither. What's up with that? On the third time that I ordered from them I found "enchiladas" on their menu, but when they arrived they were simply flour tortillas folded in half with a lot of spicy green chili sauce poured on it.... Everything is pretty spicy too, and that red salsa will make you freakin CRY. Holy HOT. Their chips, however, are OUTSTANDING. If only they would just deliver chips and guacamole. This was below par, and not in a good/golf way. Prices were reasonable and service was fast. But the food taste was very, very bland and the margarita was bad (of course, it was on special, so $4 for a bad margarita maybe isn't so bad). I had the chicken flautas dinner special; I can't say that I'm a flautas expert but the chicken was not so great.
