I ate here two days in a row last week while attending a conference at Loyola around the corner. The tacos were great. The two taco plate with beans and rice for $7.95 is a steal, but then it's $3 for chips and salsa. That's just ridiculous. The bigger issue was the lack of any friendliness with the cashiers and servers. Everyone seemed annoyed. I wasn't looking for a conversation, but some politeness would have been appreciated. I walked in for a quick lunch on a Thursday. The place and its decorations have a pretty homey, almost antique-y vibe; I was digging the interior. I ordered 3 tacos: ground beef ($2.95), al pastor ($2.95), and fish ($3.45). But the person that took my order seemed to really not want to be there; she answered my question about the menu in a tired, deadpan way, which made me just order quickly and sit down at a table. The tacos were brought to me promptly. But I thought there was a lot of room for improvement in their flavors. It was interesting to find potatoes in my ground beef and al pastor tacos, and pineapples in my al pastor tacos. I'm okay with pineapples on pizza, but I don't know how I feel about them in pork tacos... Also, all of the tacos were pretty bland, so I had to put a LOT of salsa on them, which caused them to be drippy and messier than normal taco-eating already is. I've been to Flaco's twice now and each time it was always to relax, grab a margarita or two, and enjoy some cheap Tex-Mex after spending what feels like a fortune on a drink at the Signature Lounge. They have daily drink specials on the menu. On Saturdays, they offer up $4 Sangritas which can deal a lot of damage. Feeling peckish, I went with an Al Pastor Torta ($6.95). Really good meat on the inside and more filling than simply a taco. That meal definitely hit the spot, and I had to make sure I grabbed another Sangrita before last call. Quick, easy, decent Mexican fare. Flaco's Tacos is good for those who are looking for something a step up from fast food but not wanting to make the plunge for a full out dining experience. You walk up and order your food, and you have it waited to you afterwards. There isn't much room inside, but they have outdoor seating which is nice. The food is average, but for $14 (4 dollar corona), I felt like I didn't quite get my money's worth. The portions were lunch-sized ish, but the food was fresh and tasted good. While staying in downtown Chicago, I wanted something fast but not Chick Fil A. Yeah, there's a Chick Fil A around the corner, but this was much more appealing. Even though the place itself is a bit inconspicuous, sharing the same entrance with Jimmy Johns, I was drawn in by the name. I just so happen to be there on a Thursday and found that day's special feature very appealing... the burrito minis. They come with three mini burritos, rice and retried beans. Outside of chiptole and burrito beach, I didn't expect to find another fast food mexican restaurant. The store itself is hidden up on the second floor of the building. I was surprised that the burritos were quite large and the steak was flavored with traditional spices. The tacos were not large at all. Not quite sure why the other reviewers thought 2 were enough. The chips and salsa are super cheap, but the salsa is quite hot! You can round out your menu with other traditional items such as tamales and mexican sandwiches. We were in Chicago for a Saturday night and wanted tacos! Flaco's Tacos was within walking distance of our hotel, so we picked it up and walked back to our room. Overall nice! They enforced mask wearing inside, so that made us feel good! Quick glows and grows, as opposed to pros and cons. Glows: good amount of filling in each taco, nice serving of guacamole for the price, good refried beans Grows: the guac and rice (i know) could've used more salt, Just kind of flat without it. Side order of pico de gallo was very chunky, would've worked well as a taco topping instead of something to dip the tortilla chips in. Maybe that's just personal personal preference. Also as a heads up: each taco came individually wrapped (even if you ordered a combo of the same kind). I'm not sure how they can survive in this environment when they have to credit or remake orders that are wrong. One of my favorite places to hit up after a long day knowing that I'd be fed pretty well for a small price! Mondays and Tuesdays are my favorite days to visit. Monday for 3 dollar frozen margaritas (3.5 for flavored ones) and do not let the price fool you-- those Margs are strong! Tuesdays are their $1 taco days (limited to 4 per person). The flavor rotates weekly but they have a good variety rotating around and you get gett filled up for $3-4 dollars. Sometimes on Tuesdays, the tacos are not as filled as during a non-deal day but it's still delicious and such a fantastic deal! Beware of lines on Tuesday during lunch and dinner times! The outdoor seating was crammed and right next to a busy street, good for people watching but also a spot to sit and inhale loads of carbon monoxide from constant traffic. I wish the food was better.
