BLUF: Alex and Flagstaff Auto Repair deliver solid work at a good price and stand behind it. I am blown away by the quality of their service and would recommend them without hesitation. The story is my wife and I were in Sedona this past December, had an issue with our vehicle and took it to Flagstaff to get it checked out. We were told that it was essentially shot and scrambled for options to get it fixed. We called about a dozen places and of them all Flagstaff Auto Repair hands down had the best price, time frame for fixing our vehicle, and overall service. We got our ride fixed and were on our way without missing a beat - Alex and Flagstaff Auto Repair were a life saver. But there's more. Fast forward to February and the issue comes back. We're hundreds of miles from Flag and getting warranty coverage through the local dealer wasn't an option. I don't know what's going to happen, we couldn't afford to repair or replace the vehicle. FILING a complaint with the BBB. Long story short, took my Dodge in for brakes, told there was a cancelation and they could fit me in and it would be a couple hours. That came and went, by the end of the day I needed not only brakes but new rotors, calipers and an alignment which they never did I later found out. Day 2 (of not having my work truck so unable to work) and over 2k later they say it is done. Took it home and was wobbling all over the road. Called the shop and they said "well it's a dodge" wtf does that even mean? I have had 6 and all of them older. This is a 2018 with 80k miles on it. It was perfect upon dropping it off. Just so I didn't have to go back to this shady ass place I knew I had a bad tire so I went and had all new tires put on hoping it would help the wobbling. After tires, still wobbling. Called a lift shop since I needed to anyway with new tires and while on the lift I was told to look and it was then I saw there was a missing bolt on the caliper!!!!!!!!! (crucial part of the Brakes system, see pic ) at this point not only could me and my daughter of been killed but I spent over 2k for a half ass job. At this point I was forced to go back to this shady place and call them with their mistakes. No apologies at all from any of them, Oh and on top of the brakes, the ball joint and the track bar were also loose. Careless, unprofessional, untruthful and all around crap is what this shop is. At the end of yet another work day they cost me keeping my truck to fix THEIR mistakes the owner had the nerve to tell me I owe them money for the alignment!?!?!? Needless to say, we had words. The owner is a real piece of work. He is what gives good shops, honest shops, a bad name. If he really did, then I wish him/her a swift recovery, HOWEVER there was no alternative offered and the vehicle was in such bad shape after the 2 mile drive to their place and after having to drive it BACK, I couldn't get up the hill to my motel room. Howard & Laini run a great operation and seem to care about their customers. On 2 occasions they have bailed out my Phoenix-Metro based Mazda 5 when we've been visiting the cool pines of Flagstaff. The first time my car had run over something on I-17 and something plastic was dangling off the under carriage and rubbing. The team took care of it by tacking it back up and we've had no issues from it since. The second time my car was overheating and boiling the after a run up Humphrey's Peak to see the changing aspen leaves. We pulled into the lot at about 4:50pm (they closed at 5) and Howard came out to look at the car and made a quick diagnosis that the system appeared to be holding some pressure and they could put some coolant in and check it in the morning. Long story short, the next day they were able to determine that the radiator cap was bad and while the system had pressure, it wasn't enough pressure. What might have been a repair in the 100's was much less because of that rascally radiator and the honesty of Flagstaff Auto Repair. Finally I'll offer this as a comment to all of the negative reviews, nothing in life is perfect, but when things go wrong it's how we react that defines who we are and how we are perceived. I traveled to flagstaff for a family reunion and my car started having problems with leaking power steering fluid and making noises. Brought my car to flagstaff auto repair and left it there for two days to be told that they can't find anything wrong with it. I go to start it and there was a terrible noise. So I had to stay in flagstaff an extra day and was told it needed a new power steering pump. On my drive back home, the same noise appeared 30 min into my drive and fluid leaking. Took it to my trusted mechanic who told me the new pump was faulty and spread metal fragments throughout my system. He also said my car didn't even need a new pump. Super Uber Duper appreciate Laini! She is the heart of the business for sure! My van broke down 80 miles away from Flagstaff out in Navajo Country. My Good Sam Roadside service set up my tow truck to take me to a location that couldn't even get my vehicle in for over two weeks. I immediately started calling other shops and was lucky enough to connect with Laini. It took the stress off immediately. Her willingness and care and got me a quote out straight away. I was towed to the shop where she set up the waiting room especially for me and my dogs to get out of the heat. They immediately did a diagnostic and ordered the necessary fuel pump and filter that arrived the next day. They graciously allowed me and my pups to still occupy and sleep in my van out back of the shop. The parts came in the following day and I was back on the road again. Laini was the shining star and the mechanics were awesome too. Feeding my pups treats etc. I am sure wherever Laini chooses to work she would show up give it her all. AVOID THIS SHOP AT ALL COSTS. Terrible repair work, blames the customer, accepts no responsibility, horrible customer service. The customer service Dustin gave me was unacceptable. He told me over the phone my 4Runner would be done by Thursday, and I told him I would be in Friday to pick it up in which he said, "Okay it will be done Thursday." I go in Friday morning (after hearing nothing from flag auto on Thursday) to pick it up. Dustin told me it wasn't ready, and to call back in 4 hours, still not ready. 6 hours after that and the day AFTER he had told me the vehicle would be finished, it's finally finished. When I go in for the second time on Friday to pick up my vehicle, I asked for some type of discount for my troubles( Dustin told me it was going to be done Thursday and was now the end of the business day Friday, I organized a ride that morning, got rid of my loaner car, called the shop multiple times, missed a morning meeting because I was counting on my car being done). After asking for some type of discount, I was laughed at. He went on to tell me that "If I knew anything about mechanics/automotive then you know issues come up that delay the schedule". Of course I know this, and it is the SERVICE ADVISORS JOB (aka Dustin) to communicate with the customer to inform them about such time delays, which he ABSOLUTELY DID NOT. Dustin, the service advisor, told me I had already received a $100 discount because of a "stripped bolt" that was previously on the truck, and said he wouldn't give any other discounts. I told him that part was original and Dustin told me that the Factory Toyota plant must have stripped the bolt in original assembly which is absolutely ridiculous. I told him I had never heard of this happening in my life in which he proceeded to tell me that "A kid my age without much mechanical experience probably wouldn't have ever heard of this happening". Toyota practices a quality control procedure known as six sigma. Please look into this further before claiming such ridiculous statements. Also, he went on to tell me about how he has taken classes on how to "handle people like me". What does that mean? Handling a concerned customer about their vehicle? Maybe he should have paid attention to avoid situations like these where HIS SHOP screwed up. Dustins condescending tone throughout the whole conversation went against everything I have ever heard or been taught about in business. This shop does not take the customer into consideration at all. I then asked him why he didn't call Thursday, (when he said the car would be done), and he told me, "Because you said you would pick it up Friday, and today's Friday"... Even though I went in Friday morning to pick the vehicle up and it wasn't done...In fact, it wasn't done until the end of of the whole business day roughly 8 hours later. Then, he proceeded to blame me, (the customer), as to not being specific as to the time I would pick it up Friday. (Told me it would be done Thursday before they closed) He continued to make very rude comments and remarks the whole time I was dealing with him, face to face. I left not trusting the quality of work done after my horrible experience there. From the beginning, he justified everything that had happened as not their fault, and put the customer on the defensive immediately. I have never been treated with such disrespect by any company in my life. I would DEFINITELY NOT recommend this mechanic shop to anyone under any circumstances. I am shocked as to how this company is still in business. MANY other reviews posted on various sights show this as a reoccurring scenario. Also, whatever deceiving reply Dustin/Howard come up with will not truly shed light on this situation. Their reply will twist the truth to make Flagstaff Automotive appear completely not at fault. Again, THIS REPAIR SHOP IS NOT TO BE TRUSTED. UPDATED: Three days after leaving this shop the power steering pulley stripped and I lost power steering. A more reputable shop, R&A import looked at it and said whoever did this work DID NOT TIGHTEN THE PULLEY DIRECTLY CAUSING THE FAILURE. AVOID THIS SHOP AT ALL COSTS. GO ANYWHERE ELSE! read more

I was quoted 1500 to replace the water pump and thermostat on my 5.7 Tundra at a another shop in town. Flag Auto Repair quoted me 750 for that AND a serpentine belt replacement since the belt had been damaged by the coolant spraying everywhere from the leaking water pump. Look, its a simple job that should take an experienced mechanic no more than 2 hours, plus a 300-400 in parts. That other shop wanting 1500 NOT including the serpentine belt is certainly overcharging. The pump is a little tricky to get to, but it's not too bad. Watch a few videos on youtube, dont take my word for it. Anyways. They did a good honest job for a fair price. Thats what matters. Answered all my questions. I had come to this place at the recommendation of a friend's sister who lived in town. I had been camping in Flagstaff for the weekend of June 19th when my car started acting amuck. I'm generally the kind of guy to try to fix things myself if I can, I'm not afraid to pull things apart and replace them, I've done my own spark plugs and ignition coils, replaced both oxygen sensors, and right before this trip I had replaced my air filters, wipers, and recharged my AC. But this was incredibly strange behavior for my car (stalling while I'm driving down the road) and I was a bit freaked out. I looked at the reviews on Google and they were glowing testimonies about people getting their cars fixed quickly and affordably, so it seemed like the perfect place to run to... But believe me when I say how absolutely duped I feel to have the whole issue to have been a flipping battery going bad, and these people took that and milked it for all it was worth. When I arrived they did inform me there would be a $125 fee for the first hour of diagnostics, and they'd go from there. I'm familiar with diagnostic fees, but NEVER have I been to a place that hadn't applied those fees to the cost of the repair. In this case I would have been better off going to the Chevy dealership, where I went to the last time I had battery troubles a few years back, and they charged me something around $280. And I thought THAT was expensive! It took a lot of persistence to get any information or updates out of them, and they hadn't finished the job by the time they closed, so suddenly I was stranded here & had to get myself a motel room for the night on top of it all. Now I did think about asking them to bring the cost down, but that's not something I'm inclined towards, as I believe a business has their right to charge what they deem is necessary, and being in a strange town dealing with people I've never met before, the last thing I really want to do is cause an upset if they disagreed, and THEN still have to ask for my car back in the end. I had to split the charge between two cards, but I did and got the hell out of there. Did my car get fixed? Yes. Were they cordial and professional? Largely. I came to them with a problem and they solved it for me. It's these reasons alone that I've given them two stars, because despite my cash-hemmorhaging bill I walked away with a working vehicle. It wasn't a total loss. But am I a happy customer? Hell no! Every person I've told since that I was charged $430 for a battery has responded with jaw slackened shock. No one has thought that as a reasonable price, rather said it was scammy, criminal, and they couldn't believe thats's what I was charged. I wish I had checked the yelp reviews prior as well, which show a pretty dramatic curve of their service quality going south in the past year and similar stories to what I just experienced. I REALLY wish I had just gone to the auto store around the corner and tried buying a battery first before taking it in somewhere and getting charged three times as much. That one's on me, and believe me I'm kicking myself for it. More than anything this has bred more distrust from mechanics for me. Perhaps if my bill had been reasonable, say $200 less, my review would be a lot more like these blissful 5 stars that got to drive away lucky. But to give them anymore than what I have would be an insult to honesty. My fiancé and I were passing through from Ca to the other side of the county and needed to be at our location within a certain number of days. As it was a Friday, we were anticipating we would have to wait until Monday for our RV AC to be fixed and we're afraid we were going to miss our event, but the owners were extremely helpful, kind, and accommodating. They were able to order our parts, get it delivered and fixed our air conditioner all during that same day. The owner fixed it himself with an other man's help and double checked to make sure it was done properly. They let us wait in the waiting room with our dogs, gave them treats and also gave us some pizza from their lunch! They were such a blessing to us and we appreciate their above and beyond service. They were also very personable. The owners have a high level of experience drag racing which basically translates into them really knowing their stuff! Based on the review where someone from Flagstaff Auto replied to yelp review with an answer involving "eating a sandwich." I knew that's some next level confidence and I had to give them a shot. The shop itself is a little off the beaten path and parking is tight but once you get inside the guys at the counter are friendly / customer service is top notch. We went through a checklist of potential issues and approaches to fix it. This attention to detail and follow up went the entire course of the process. They addressed small problems I thought I had and got on going problems which other mechanics (and some at an actual Mitsubishi dealership) just gagged off. My husband and I are fulltime RV'ers and were hauling our 42 ft. 5th wheel through the pass when we noticed smoke coming from the rear tire area. Flagstaff Auto Repair had good ratings so we called them and they were able to look at our truck that same day and repair it the following day. Apparently our rear parking brake had gone bad and was leaking which caused the smoke. It would have been so easy for someone to recommend rear brakes, etc. but Howard and Laini at Flagstaff Auto Repair were honest with us and said our rear brakes were fine and it was just the right rear axle seal and parking brake pads. So a potentially expensive repair was avoided simply because of the honesty and integrity of Flagstaff Auto Repair. Howard and Laini gave us a ride to where we were staying and picked us up when the repair was done. To have a local shop fit us into their already busy schedule (their task board was visible and was full, they were busy) and to be able to honestly access and repair the problem within 24 hours was such a blessing. If we are in the Flagstaff area again, we will use them for all our repairs and if we don't need repairs we would still stop by to say hello; that's the kind of people and kind they are and the kind of service they provide. This is hands down the best shop I have been to in all of my travels across the US. Howard got our van right in, took the time to find the right radiator for our van (1974 Ford Econoline, not easy finding the perfect match for this vehicle), welcomed us and and our dog to wait in the waiting room, and even worked on 4th of July to get our van finished and get us back on the road! Not only did they do a stellar job, but Dustin made sure to walk me through the problem they identified as well as the source before discussing options for next steps. I've been to shops that just went in and started fixing things without consulting me first which was 1 - infuriating and 2 - expensive. I appreciated the extra time he took as well as the additional effort they put in to expedite the process of finding my specialty break lines. I do not recommend going to flagstaff auto repair for any diagnosis. I took my car in because my windshield wipers were broken. They first said that I needed a new combination switch. I knew I was able to fix it myself, so I bought the part and it ended up not being the issue. I was unable to return the part so I was already in the hole since my diagnostic was wrong. I took it back to flagstaff auto repair and had another diagnosis on my car and they said it was the motor. Since they were unapologetic about the first mistake, a friend referred me to Heaths auto shop where they quoted me $200 cheaper. I took it to Heaths and told them that flagstaff auto repair said it was the motor. They put a new motor in and told me that it did not fix the problem. At this point my windshield wipers are costing an insane amount of money to get fixed due to TWO misdiagnosis. My windshield wipers were finally fixed after it being electrical all along. I returned to flagstaff auto repair in hopes they would be apologetic for their mistakes and only refund me for their misdiagnosis, but that was not the case. I do not recommend them if you are trying to determine what's wrong with your car because it will end up being more of a headache than it's worth. read more

I don't normally post reviews. Therefore, the fact that I feel compelled to post on this shop tells you how utterly fantastic it is. I was traveling across the country from New Jersey to Nevada when my AC went out in my little beetle in the middle of Arizona....in July..... I am a bit of a princess and had to get this checked out ASAP. I was planning on stopping in Flagstaff anyway- so I started looking for somewhere on the way. I normally only go to vw certified type places because I know vw's can be tough to work on but I was impressed with what people said about this place and how willing they were to help when I called. Plus, I was in a time crunch. I stopped by, sweating bullets. They took my car right away and were able to diagnose the problem quickly (a fuse issue that many vw's have. Makes sense since my baby is older- a 2000) They offered me multiple options including keeping it for the night to get a vw part shipped over and put on. BUT, I was in a bit of a time crunch and relatively close to where I was headed (in comparison to where I started...) They were able to offer a temporary circuit breaker fix. I am currently spending the night in Las Vegas, 200 miles from them and the temp fix is still working. I just need it to last until I can drop my car off at my guy in northern Nevada tomorrow. I know my car very well. I didn't feel swindled and despite being a woman, I didn't feel as if the men talked down to me, either. Really a wonderful place. And I found the cost to be very fair. I also got my full synthetic oil done while I was there. Oh, not only were they timely, friendly, and informative, they worked on my car while it was filled literally to the top with stuff...they couldn't see out my back window or have a passenger. Great customer service and knowledge, even when it comes to German cars! Nice work. Nice waiting area and they gave me a water bottle while I waited. As if you need any more reasons to visit, this student doctor would endorse this place if she could. read more
