I came here last night with my friends. I went to go use the bathroom and asked someone who I thought was an employee if I could use it. Maybe he misunderstood me since I was wearing a mask. It was actually a room for the employees. So I texted my friends to let them know I might take longer since I didn't go to the right bathroom, but I got escorted by Monique. She asked me why I was there and I told her I thought it was the bathroom. She said I shouldn't be there and I said I asked an employee and described him. She said she asked all the employees and there was no employee like that. Not sure how she asked all the employees when she was with me the whole time while escorting me. I just stayed compliant and was over it, I didn't want to argue. My friends came out and wanted to understand the situation. It seemed like a misunderstanding but they didn't really want to hear from us. I just want to point out that we were dealing with Monique and then Jose joined in trying to back up Monique. Jose just kept saying I've never seen you guys here before. My friends come here every week, maybe they've never seen me. Also, Kevin gave me a free drink token. He was the shift manager. Garbage pit of San Diego. It's the only bar I've ever been to in the US and Europe that literally removes tables and chairs from beneath customers, regardless of whether they are being used. Drinks are overpriced and crappy and the waitstaff all charge you a different price, depending on your age and whether they know you. Paul is a piece of trash who should be fired but the owners like hiring people who discriminate. Look at the other reviews and you will see this place is a total dump. There are too many choices in Hillcrest so save your money and your time and avoid the garbage pit known as Flicks. Lastly, if the owners actually cared about the reviews, they would claim the site on Yelp. The fact that the owners don't claim it tells me they could care less. The manager Kyle Matthew's came up to my friend, dressed completely appropriately for a club, and asked her if she was wearing underwear while we were dancing. She was very uncomfortable and the question was not appropriate at all. I went up to speak to him and he responded with misogynistic comments and told us "this is a gay bar" as if we weren't there for exactly that reason - what does that even mean? I asked about the dress code and he said "we don't want women like that in here". He defended his actions rudely and refused to have a conversation, eventually kicking me out completely. We are incredibly upset to have been treated that way as women, and my friend did absolutely nothing to deserve being treated that grossly. I have been to Flicks a few times but this visit was to celebrate a friends birthday and enjoy Drag Brunch! We made our reservations in advance since we heard they sell out pretty quickly and this process was super easy via their FB page. Ticket prices for the brunch were extremely reasonable with an incredible line up of Drag Queens. Our service from the moment we arrived to the moment we left fantastic! Our server was very friendly and also very quick even tho there was a drag show going on at the same time. We also visited during COVID and they took the safety precautions seriously. The staff was wearing mask, show was outdoors, plexi dividers between tables, and the drag queens were wearing plastic face shields. Tipping the queens was allowed only by using socially distancing. read more

The vast majority of the negative reviews of Flicks are either from (a) people who had a phone stolen which is happening in the entire area, not just Flicks, and (b) straight women who like to frequent gay bars, but get offended when the clientele, staff or their surroundings are not to their liking. This bar's primary existence for decades was for gay men, so if straight women insist on coming to these establishments instead of other areas of San Diego, please be respectful and understand your surroundings. The staff is very accommodating and friendly, the drinks are strong, and the music (for the most part) is fine though definitely geared more to a heterosexual crowd after 9:30 every night. Flicks is nice to hang in for about 5 minutes before you realize their DJ's cater to a heterosexual audience. I've gone quite a few times now thinking because I am in a gay club at the gay neighborhood i'd be able to listen to current music. However, there's about 3 hours of 2000s rap in their setlist and the rest is music you'd hear inside a Forever 21 with a remix. I have yet to hear any Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Doja Cat, Megan, Rihanna... it's super disappointing. On top of that the smoke machines will break and damage your eardrums if you are anywhere near them, they seem to be super outdated. I do not recommend this place read more

Went with my friends this Saturday and wish we could have had a better experience. My friend bought two shots and didn't tip (he always tips at the end of the night) and when the bartender saw that he didn't tip, HE REMOVED THE LIMES! Came here on a Friday night while friends were visiting. The place was pretty packed, but there were no lines to get in. And no cover charge. There is a covered outdoor patio that also has a bunch of space. Things I liked about this bar: video bar-- with awesome videos to match all the music playing. Strong drinks-- pretty sure all my shots were double and all mixed drinks packed a punch. The dancers-- everyone was having fun and looked good! The only thing that was a little off was the bathroom situation. Only 2 stalls and they're co-ed witch can get a little sloppy when everyone is few drinks in. Overall good time though..
