Ordered a 6" lemon raspberry cake for my moms bday for pickup at 10 AM. Got the notification it was ready to be picked up at 924 AM and at the pickup counter which was odd since it was so much earlier than I had requested to pick up. Picked it up and the decorations are horrible compared to how it's advertised on the site. It honestly looks like 0 effort went into it (especially considering they had 36 minutes they could've been decorating it between 924 and 10 AM) and does not look at all like the $36 beautifully decorated cake I ordered. Flour Bakery & Cafe is one of the two most popular bakery & cafe in the Boston area (the other one is Tatte Bakery and Cafe). Owner and Harvard graduate Joanne Chang started her very first Flour at this South End location back in 2000. Moving on to 2018, the Flour empire has expanded to 7 locations (as of May 2018) and she even won James Beard Outstanding Baker award in 2016. In addition, she also runs a Asian-inspired tapas restaurant called Myers + Chang. I have to give some credits to my friend because he was the one who told me about Flour. Originally I was planning to visit the Fort Point location (that's the second Flour location), but that location had awful parking situation and I basically drove out of the way since it was a lot easier to find parking at this South End location (metered street parking and I believe parking is free on Sunday). The cafe was pretty crowded on Sunday morning, but line generally moved fairly quick and service was pretty fast. Sticky bun is Flour's most famous and signature pastry, but the cafe also sells various sandwiches and salads. *** Latte (small, $3.25): Not a fan of lukewarm latte (I like my latte hot) - decent cup of latte, but not exactly amazing. Sticky Bun ($4): Yup it is the same sticky bun as seen on "Throwdown with Bobby Flay" and "Best Thing Bobby Ever Ate" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ob6GIhM8Azs). If you are sensitive to sweet, then you might not like this bun because it definitely tasted a bit sweet. Personally the sweetness level is somewhat manageable (not sugar coma kind of sweetness). Sure bun was good (that's because I like pecan), but I am not crazy about it. Roasted Lamb (cucumber raita, shaved fennel, herbed tahini, ras el hanout, focaccia - $9.5 for full sandwich): You can order half sandwich instead of full sandwich. The sandwich tasted both slightly sour and cold. Again another good order, but not exactly a home-run. *** It is a good bakery & cafe, but I was expecting a little bit for a somewhat hyped up place like this. My coworker did tell me that Tatte Bakery and Cafe is better and maybe I will give Tatte a try next time I visit Boston. You need to step into Flour Cafe. Removed slightly from the main streets, facing urban America's answer to a working parent's cry for a playground. With stools facing glass windows showcasing bustling pedestrians milling towards modern serfdom. A plethora of pastries on display tantalizingly welcome you, seducing you to have you cheat on your commitments to a waistline or a healthy heart. If you abhor human interaction or just hate queues, a tablet takes your order and payment on the right as you enter. Places to sit are hard to find for groups but easy for single patrons. Listen for your name as it is yelled out, for the yelling isn't too loud but the yellers (no connection with cinematic canines) nice and friendly. The cakes and pastries are fresh, not as sweet as America has to offer generally and the smell of fresh coffee appropriately lingering. Sure its expensive, with a slice of Boston cream pie and a small coffee setting you back nearly 8-10$. But hey! Look around you, these people got money. The breakfast sandwich is so good!! Filling but not heavy at all. I would come back here just for this. We also tried the lemon muffin which was also very good - not too sweet which I like. As soon as we walked in, I got a whiff of warming, welcoming bacon scent. I am a stickler when it comes to bacon, but this did not smell like added fats or grease that you often get in diners or breakfast restaurants, just simple good old bacon like I haven't had in ages. That prompted me to order the smoked applewood sandwich, but in the salad version-I love that you can order any sandwich (except for paninis) in a salad version, since sometimes you just want to have those extra greens (you can still order a slice of bread on the side!). The bacon was perfectly crispy and flavourful. Just come here and get the Sticky Bun. That's all you need to know. If I am ever visiting Boston, and anywhere in the vicinity of a Flour, no matter what time of day, or whether or not we just had a big meal or about to have a big meal, I always come here to get (at least) a Sticky Bun. They are really that good here. This is a pretty tiny location, so if you are pressed for time, I would suggest just grabbing a lot of napkins and heading out with your bun. Otherwise, I highly recommend getting anything else they sell here and snagging a seat to enjoy some of the best baked goods in Boston. I think I've tried all of the cookies at this point, and they are all excellent. Most notably, the Chunky Lola and the TCHO Chocolate Chip are incredible. The Double Chocolate and Peanut Butter are also quite good. It looks like the regular food here is supposed to be good too, but I never have enough room since I know I need to have enough room for at least one Sticky Bun and a ton more sweets. Parmesan scone was delicious-- I usually complain about scones being too dry, but the crust and crumble were just right. Breakfast egg sandwich hit the spot-- huge slice of crispy bacon, an airy, square slab of egg, more dijonaise than necessary, and cheddar/tomato/arugula layered in there. Didn't care for the chai latte-- spices were too thin and it tasted watery despite the whole milk, yielding a disappointing, light-caffeine experience. Soy mocha latte is at least tasty. I would be hitting up Flour all the time for carbs if I lived near any of their locations; this one was just a short jaunt from Mass Ave on orange line. Despite the hype, our line was short, we managed to snag a table, and the wait for prepared food was totally reasonable. (Granted, they had already run out of the almond croissants.) I love having Flour so close to school, it's perfect for a quick caffeine run or lunch spot. The only downside is that you'll end up leaving smelling like their delicious sandwiches all day. They have a drink that changes every so often and it's been really delicious the last two times I've been (Birthday Cake Latte, Lavender Fog). In terms of food, their BLT is so good (that crispy crispy bacon) and brought tears to my hungry self. Their sweets selection is also pretty extensive and are all good (sticky buns omg). It has pretty limited seating and gets super packed at meal hours, so it's not the best place to sit and study. Despite this, I'll keep coming back. read more

All the pastries and food item are very delicious, but highly highly recommend the coconut cream pie and sticky bun (warmed up!). Flour Bakery was on my to-try list when planning for our first Boston trip. On the morning of our flight back to Chicago, we walked over with our luggage and picked up their sticky bun, spinach pinwheel, and a coffee after waiting in their morning rush line. Ate in the nearby park. Was dreading that the sticky bun would be teeth-achingly sweet, but it turned out to have an enjoyable level of ooeygooey sweetness. Whenever I want just a little something sweet, I stop by this branch of the Flour empire and order a Chunky Lola cookie (oatmeal, chocolate, pecans and coconut). But then I see the massive brown butter rice krispie treat, and I get that for my wife. But then I take a bite, and realize she deserves to enjoy a non-nibbled snack, and I order a nutless Tcho chocolate chunk cookie. But then Tcho cacao sounds so good, so I get the dense and fudgey double chocolate cookie. But then I see they have sticky buns in stock (rare!) and I get one of those, for breakfast the next day. But then I realize if I get myself a breakfast goodie, I should bring a cinnamon roll home for my wife. But then I see they have kouign amanns and I actually prefer those over the sticky buns, which I got because they're almost always sold out, so I get one of those, too. But then I get a glazed raspberry Pop Tart because childhood nostalgia! But then I get the oversized housemade Oreo because competing nostalgia. Sticky bun-- delicious as others before me have said. It is sweet, but not overly so, and not as sweet as you'd think when you look at it. A perfect complement to my coffee (their decaf is decent!), which I enjoyed on a leisurely Sunday afternoon. I also tried their breakfast sandwich and chicken panini. Both were tasty but nothing out-of-this-world crazy. The breakfast sandwich had a thick airy egg soufflé which was tasty. The panini was good but had a bit too much oil/butter for my taste. Overall, I enjoyed my breakfast/brunch and would definitely return and recommend this place to others. A solid choice. I would like to try some of the other sweets they had for sale. We went here this morning. It's a sweet lil cafe in a nice area with indoor and outdoor seating. We opted for the communal table inside since there was only one other customer there and it was disgusting: sticky, covered in crumbs, wet coffee rings. Strangely, we saw a worker going to clean the front doors but NOBODY came to clean any of the tables. HUH? Iced chai and iced coffee were both good. Our daughter got a (decaf) hibiscus iced tea that was a bit too sweet but hit the spot on a super hot day. Baked goods breakdown: 1) Parmesan chive scone: salty, perfect hard-soft ratio, so good. Possibly our favorite. 2) Blondie: amazing texture, nice large chunks of chocolate, superb. 3) Vegan chocolate chunk muffin: this was our daughter's pick, and we were skeptical but it tasted great. A wonderfully light consistency and still a ton of flavor. 4) Sticky bun: this is supposedly what they're known for but we found it unimpressive. The topping was cloying, the bottom bun portion had gone mushy and overall it just wasn't nearly as appetizing as the other three items. The guy at the register was beyond snotty and even though we want to take an extra star off for him alone, the woman running us the food was very sweet, so they balanced each other out. 3.5 stars, rounding down because of the filthiness, but no hard feelings as we can see ourselves coming here again on another trip. read more

This place is bustling (esp on an easter morning). you can smell freshly baked breads/cakes on your way in. My bf and I shared two sandwiches. The roasted lamb sandwich was amazing! I'm always blown away by the consistency of quality of Flour given the amount of locations they now have. It's amazing how a cafe could have both high quality pastries AND lunch/dinner food in all it's locations. There is nothing at Flour that I haven't liked. Highly recommend the berry bread pudding, twice-baked brioche, and sweet potato sandwich. Coffee is also always fresh and piping hot. The raspberry seltzer is a great refreshing drink in the summer. I rave about this place all the time and it's always one of the first places I visit when I'm back in Boston. After stumbling upon a youtube video of Flour's famous sticky buns, I had to come try one... and I've been obsessed ever since. The dough is so soft and it soaks up all the cinnamon glaze like a sponge. The pecans are generously sprinkled over the top, adding a crunchy contrast that compliments everything perfectly. I love this little cafe! It was close to where we stayed and David and I wandered here the morning of our first full day in Boston! I know they had many locations, too! Let me say that their baked goods are placed in such an enticing way, you really want to get a little of everything when you walk in. Everything on display just looks so yummy. So we had to try a sticky bun - everyone seems to get this and we had to jump on the bandwagon. It was a perfectly syrupy bun topped with pecans. The only disappointment I had was that they did not warm the bun before giving it to me, and I wish I had asked them to because I'm sure it would have been so much tastier if it was warmed. It was hard when cold, so WARM THE BUN! David also ordered a ham and egg breakfast sandwich. I had a bite and it was so GOOD! See his photo, but like in others, the egg layer is so thick and this is really what you call a filling breakfast sandwich. Also, the ciabatta bread was warm and fluffy, I loved this sandwich! We also had one of their specials, Oreo mocha latte (hot - instead of iced!) and it was delicious! I'm not a coffee drinker but definitely would drink this. The two young women behind the counter rose above "Del's" boorish and abusive behavior and provided great service. Del, you're giving baby boomers a bad name. It was very sticky, but I the bun part tasted lackluster and didn't have much cinnamon taste, and was a little bit on the dry side. It still tasted warm, so I didn't think it was a matter of needed to be re-heated. In any case, I wouldn't go out of my way to get this again. I LOVE Flour Bakery, and I come more than my wallet would like. My staple is the phenomenal breakfast sandwich (which I get at all times of day) - the egg melts in your mouth and as a vegetarian, you can substitute guac for meat for free which I really appreciate. It costs a little more than I typically spend on breakfast sandwiches (~8$), which is why I usually get it for lunch. The pastries, obviously, are all great, and I like that they have fun monthly special pastries now too. A friend bought the cookbook and I'm trying to work my way through it to see if I can ever replicate the magic at home.
