So I've gone here a few times now, and I most likely will be back for more. I love the relaxed atmosphere and the setup with the chalkboard menu design, I think it's genius. The first time I went there, the first thing that caught my eye was the pastries. They have a large selection and practically everything looked great. I tried the chocolate chip cookie and wasn't really a fan, however I probably stray from the norm since I don't like oozy rich chocolate, so if you do it'll probably taste wonderful. But, the cookie that I do love is the cornmeal lime. I've never heard or had anything like it before and it tastes amazing! The man at the register recommended it and it's something you shouldn't pass up. It's a firm, crumbly cookie and the lime flavor is a refreshing joy. Both the raspberry crumb bar and berry bread pudding also taste wonderful, just a bit messy to eat. In terms of sandwiches, I ended up getting the bacon sandwich and added chicken since it'd seem like there'd be more bread than inner contents, and it was great. It was flavorful and filling. The only downside is that it was a bit pricey for sandwich. Adding ingredients cost 2.50 per item, so my sandwich ended up being 10+ dollars. read more

This is truly a five star bakery and cafe. If should be a must do for anyone visiting Boston. All their locations are just as good and they have many. It's very small but there are are tables but this is more of a grab and go. I pick up a bunch of stuff to bring home every time I'm in Boston for one of my "TV Foodie Road Trips" So needless to say I've had just about everything here over the years. This place just completely forgot my order which could happen because someone accidentally took my order but why didn't they just call out my name, then this problem wouldn't have happened. When you reach the level of fame Flour Bakery has reached, it must be hard to maintain the level of experience people expect. For me, Flour is just like a three-star Yelp review says: "A-OK." Friendly staff said "Good morning!" the moment I walked in. I ordered a sticky bun and coffee and waited a couple minutes for them. I never mind waiting (see previous Neptune Oyster review) but in retrospect, I don't know why I was waiting. I think someone had to move the single sticky bun from its initial plate behind the sneeze guard to another, seemingly identical, second plate for me. I sipped my coffee while I waited. It's all good! The coffee was... OK. It tasted like Chock full O'Nuts, which is the brand I buy from Stop & Shop. Chock full O'Nuts is OK. So is Stop & Shop. (The one in Dedham, anyway.) The sticky bun was OK. It seemed to have come fresh out of the oven because I saw a barista placing it behind the glass just as I walked to the register. I was expecting something gooey and doughy, with crunchy pecans, and I guess that all ended up happening sort of, but it was the syrup and dough that were kind of hard and crunchy and the pecans that were kind of gooey. The adjectives and the just components didn't match up how I imagined they would. Outdoor seating was just OK, bordering on meh. On a hot summer morning the metal chairs felt like they had just come out of a blacksmith's forge, and the textured steel pattern bistro set was definitely reflecting an unsafe amount of UV light from the unobscured Washington Street sunrise directing into my pupils, and there was only the one spot left to sit at. I appreciated that there was a bucket outside in which to place my used mug and plate. It saved me a trip back inside. Overall, I want to try this place again, because I am pretty sure it is better than this. I am hoping this was just a one-off. read more

If you're in need for a quick, yet fulfilling breakfast, this is your spot. Flour Bakery is a chain restaurant sprinkled all around Boston. I went to two locations on my latest visit and they were both great (seem to be consistent across locations). They don't have many traditional breakfasty plates, but they have plenty of lunch sandwiches to choose from. And don't even get me started on the pastries, both sweet and savory. The coffee was decent but nothing special. On my visit to this location, I had the smoked ham and pecorino sandwich and a sticky bun. The person I was with got the French toast with a side of bacon. My sandwich was absolutely perfect. The meat was piled high and the sauce they used was finger licking good! Although people rave about the sticky bun, I honestly just thought it was average. Nothing stood out about it. The French toast was the same way but the bacon was delicious and cooked just the way a like with a chewy texture like jerky. The only issue I have is the seating. This location isn't so bad but still beware. The seating area is tiny and any groups larger than 2 may have a hard time finding a seat. Love the options here at Flour. It's one of the few places where I can get gluten-free and vegan pastries. I love the GF ginger-pear muffin and the ham & cheese croissant. The only thing is that their pastries are rather pricey ($3-4 a piece) and it can get expensive if you're trying to buy more than a few pastries at a time. Flour is seriously one of the best things about Boston. EVERYTHING you can order there is just so excellent. The coffee? Balanced. The pies? Dreamy. The scones? Delectable. The cookies? To die for. Whenever we get a cake from Flour for a special work occasion, our team literally says, "YAYYYY" and then spends the rest of the meeting talking about how delicious the cake is. I'm not kidding. We look for excuses to get cakes and at least one of us always volunteers to run over and pick it up. The portion sizes are also great. If you're super hungry, a cup of soup and a half sandwich will be more than enough. The salads and grain bowls are huge. Service is brisk, so you better know what you want by the time you get to the front. Otherwise, you'll be holding the rest of us up; and we don't like it when folks delay our access to Flour goods. I came here for a quick dinner last night before rushing off to a meeting. I got there around 6:00 PM, and there wasn't much of a line, which was good. I ordered the smoked turkey sandwich (with aged cheddar, cranberry chutney, apple-dill slaw, multigrain bread). Make sure to order it PRESSED, so it's toasted & warm! The sandwich was delicious, and a filling meal. I also ordered a dirty Chai latte with two shots of espresso and oat milk. This place was solid! I came during their busy lunch hour and it was still a great experience. I had their seasonal tomato soup, it had great flavor, sorta spicy and I loved it. Flour has a lot of options for people with dietary restrictions (gf, veg/vegan). Each category of food they serve has at least one option for each kind of diet. Their menu is a bit scattered and hard to read especially when there's a crowd of people standing in front of part of the menu while ordering. I had a vegan breakfast bar that was tasty. Now sporting several locations around Boston, Joanne Chang's cookbook also quite well received, Flour Bakery + Café features a layout will not prove unfamiliar to those who've visited places like Panera, and although there is no doubt the ingredients used in Flour's baked goods and sandwiches are better than a place just now trying to go "clean" with its image the fact remains that considering the pricepoint it still does not perform on par with the Bouchons of the world, nor many local bakeries in both larger and smaller cities. A high volume space to be sure, both literally and figuratively as businessmen bustle in and out as noise generated by music, kitchen and coffee brewing all clash overhead, it was with Cold Brew in hand that several minutes were spent waiting for others to add milk or creamer at a cramped station before four boxed items were taken to a table, the fifth requested to be warmed and taking nearly fifteen minutes to do so. Having stuck mostly to laminated pastry the first time, but this time hoping to see improvement by way of some classic American treats, suffice it to say that Flour Bakery + Café's Kouign Amann fails to meet high standards set by bakeries such as San Francisco's b. Patisserie while the Blueberry Muffin also comes up short by focusing on typical grocery produce instead of bringing in the smaller, more concentrated fruits readily found just a few hours north in Maine. Not a total loss, the Carrot Cake exceedingly moist with nuts, raisins and light citrus all accounted for in the tan Spice Cake, Boston Cream Pie was as delicious as it was novel, yet as a result of some serious miscalculations from the kitchen the bottom was still half-frozen, the Bread Pudding likewise still cold at its center making one wonder just how bad it may have been were it not for the requested trip to the warming oven. read more

My dad had told me about this cafe prior to my visit to Boston when he had seen this place be featured on TV & suggested I check this place out to see what all the fuss was about. I'm glad I did! We ordered their infamous Sticky Bun, which was like a cinnamon roll but instead of cinnamon and a glaze it was topped with caramel and pecans! YUM. It wasn't as sweet as it looked, which was good, because sometimes too sweet is no bueno for me. It was so gooey, soft, and scrumptious! UGH I wish I had more just thinking about it. We also ordered their Brioche Au Chocolat, basically a chocolate croissant but better! That was also very delicious and not overpoweringly sweet. On the day I was leaving Boston I loved the Sticky Buns so much I tried to go back to buy more to bring back to Chicago with me for my dad, but unfortunately they ran out the 2 times we came back to check that day. I wished I would've known I could've called ahead to reserve some sooner before my flight because I know my dad would've loved these! But I guess that means I'll just have to visit again soon! UGH this bakery killed me because everything looked so delicious on display. I nearly had a heart attack just restraining myself from not ordering everything I saw. I loved my roast chicken sandwich -- the arugula and avocado were downright refreshing (such fresh arugula!) and the white bread was soooo fluffy and chewy and perfect. I think I might've even liked it more than their legendary pastries. Tried their sticky bun and it was not bad! Not as luscious and sinful as maybe the review hype had made me expect, but complex in flavor, more subtle than just shockingly sweet. After having dinner nearby, dropped by Flour Bakery for some dessert! :) Such a CUUUUUTE place! Love thier logo "make life sweeter... eat dessert first!" :) that is SOOOOOOO me! I LIVE for desserts! Out of the beautiful selection of pastries, my friend and I exercised self-control and just picked just one each. I noticed a BEAUTIFUL chocolate cake with a sign stating "Low Fat Vegetarin Chocolate Cake"... guilt-free cake? I HAD to try it! My friend ordered a big "Oreo Cookie".. in which the cookie portion was replaced with cake. My friend also ordered a Soy Chai Latte. The verdict? Everything was DELICIOUS! The low fat cake was light, fluffy, and yet chocolatey.. the oreo cookie tasted JUST like an oreo cookie! Great service, clean dining area, fast, polite service.. a great cozy atmosphere to chat and catch up with friends. If I lived in Boston, I would definitely come back for lunch! I came to this location right before a flight to Canada and it was so satisfying. This location has plenty of seating with a large table as well, but when I went, it was taken over by doctors from a nearby hospital. I had a coffee here and there was nothing to complain about - nothing! I also had a whole sticky bun here and it tasted like it had just come right out of the oven, unlike the one I had in Cambridge. It literally melted in my mouth. Kind of reminded me of a cinnamon bun/pecan pie hybrid - soooo good. In fact, it's one of those things that are absolutely delicious while you're eating it and you want more after, but then you think about how rich and dense it is and realize it's probably better than you don't eat another one. Definitely delicious, but I couldn't eat a whole one of these everyday. Are you looking for a looking for a simple, but satisfying lunch that will fill up your stomach? Are you willing to spend more than $10 but less than $15? Are you willing to wait a little? If you said yes to all of my questions, this place may have your answer. I was able to come to this place with a few people that I know for an afternoon lunch, and here is what happened. The first thing I decided to get was the Sticky Buns. The guys in my party also got a couple buns as well. This is a pastry doused in a sticky, brownish, and thick syrup with pecan nuts on top. I also wanted to get a good sandwich, so I decided to get a Grilled Chicken with Brie cheese, peppers, arugula, and caramelized onions. The sandwich was really good, despite the high price of approximately $8. I loved the toasty and crispy bread. Combined with the soft and tender chicken, the melted cheese, and the flavor of the arugula, onions and peppers, and I had a great sandwich to enjoy. As for the Sticky Bun, it was a great dessert. I liked the soft chewiness of the bun, the sticky and sweet syrup, and the pecans made the bun tastier. This bun is definitely not the type of bun that you should eat with your hands. My hands felt really sticky even after using a napkin, so I had to wash my hands. Using a fork and knife is a good idea. One grilled chicken sandwich, a Sticky Bun, and a big cup of water can definitely fill up your stomach, and can make a great lunch. A Sticky Bun is also a great choice for a light and sweet breakfast or an afternoon snack. The price of $11.90 for the sandwich and Sticky Bun is a little high, but reasonable. The only thing I was not impressed was the coffee. A couple guys in my party ordered a cup of iced coffee and a cup of hot coffee. The hot coffee tasted bland, despite putting some cream and sugar. The iced coffee was a little too sweet. This is not the type of cafe I would come just for coffee. Service was just decent, and since this cafe is really popular, you have to find the right timing to eat here, because it can get crowded. Overall, if you are looking for a tasty sandwich for lunch, or a great pastry for an afternoon snack or a sweet breakfast, and you are willing to spend a few dollars more on quality, then this is a great choice. This is what I would call really good cafe food, but I think you should skip the coffee. I hope to come back here often for some more bakery goods. read more

Flour was truly infallible. There is literally nothing bad here! I don't love everything, but I can safely say I've liked everything I tried. And you know how picky I am... I swear there's crack in the Raspberry Seltzer because it's the most addictive thing ever. I took a sip of my friend's drink, and I thought I didn't really care for it. But 2 days later I found myself venturing to Flour in the middle of an icy Boston winter for an ice-cold raspberry seltzer and 2 days after that...and after that...and after that...Buyer beware. When you take that first innocent sip, know that you may whittle away your trust fund $2.25 at a time... Flour has mastered the art of the sandwich. The combinations are original, and the flavors of the top-notch ingredients somehow combine to form something even more exceptional. I've tried several, but I'll limit my review to my two faves. You really can't go wrong with the sandwich selection. My favorites are the Roast Chicken with avocado & jicama and the Roasted Lamb with tomato chutney and goat cheese. But if I were you, I would probably just start from the top and work your way down. Other highlights from the sweets menu include the dense, sweet-but-not-sugary cupcakes in chocolate and red velvet and the iconic sticky bun. The sticky pull-apart pastry on which Joanne Chang built her bountiful empire...would it be going too far to say she has great buns? Get one in the morning while they're hot - they run out pretty quickly. My advice: steer clear around lunchtime on weekends. The line is out the door and around the corner, and standing outside in the middle of winter is a great way to get sick! It's taken me a long time to get around to writing about Flour, and I hope my heaping teaspoon of praise and a 5-star rating will atone for my neglect... read more

Stopping by about an hour before closing on a Friday, they said they had ran out but that we could pre-order and pick up the next day. (I won't mention about how rude the lady was when I picked up my buns but) when we tried these buns back at the hotel (heated up), they were gross. Super heavy and caked with sauce (it was like a thick caramel sauce reduced with alcohol). I wouldn't recommend making a trip down here. read more

Our trip to get breakfast turned into a journey and adventure. WIth all of the random Memorial Day weekend traffic, it took us a total of 1.5 hrs to get here from Harvard Sq. Was it worth it? Hell yes. We got there 30 minutes after opening on a beautiful Sunday morning, and I was afraid that it would be impossible to get a table among the 15 or so tables in the dining area. But both times I was here when it seemed extremely busy, there was always a table that seemed to be calling my name! I ordered two slices of French toast (less than $5), a sugar brioche bun, and a homemade raspberry seltzer. He ordered the breakfast egg sandwich with ham, which also came with tomatoes, lettuce, cheese and a really unidentified cheese. The combination of the ingredients and the wonderful bread made this probably the best breakfast sandwich imaginable. My French toast was killer, too. My first few bites while it was still hot felt like liquid bread filling my mouth (yes, I know liquid bread is...dough...). Next time, I'm definitely trying the oreo, vanilla-filled donut and one of the sandwiches. Sometimes I wish I had two or three stomachs... The decor is cute. It looks sort of like the handiwork of a very talented 15-year-old girl, which isn't a bad thing. :) This is a charming, wonderful little place to start the morning. After a 5 star brunch down the street at Toro, we walked over here and had another 5 star meal at Flour Bakery! Seriously, can the day get any better??? The line was crazy and the place was packed, but the wait for food wasn't too bad. They knock things out quick around here! Egg Sandwich - ham or bacon, roasted tomato, greens, cheddar, and dijonnaise. I got mine with bacon and this is a MUST TRY!! The egg is about an inch thick and sits on soft ciabatta bread. Roasted Lamb Sandwich - with tender pieces of lamb, arugula, tomato chutney and goat cheese on the softest bread. Holy moly... this is one HOT combo. The lamb was super tender and thinly sliced, the tomato chutney is something else, and you can't go wrong with goat cheese. I don't know which one I like more, this or the egg sandwich. Macaroon - these coconut macaroons are the best I've ever had!! Usually they're way too sweet for me, but these were heaven in my mouth. The outer part was crunchy and golden brown. It was chewy and sweet, but not overwhelmingly so. Note: My friend has been trying to get their sticky buns every time she's come, but they've always sold out! The staff told us that they usually sell out within the first 30 minutes of opening shop, so if you know you want to pick up some sticky buns in the morning just call the night before and let them know so they can reserve some on the side for you. read more

Very cute little place for sandwiches and pastries. The wait was way too long though - they need to separate things into two lines - desserts/people who actually want to order food. That way if all you want is a cookie - you'll get a cookie quickly. I ordered the Portobello Mushroom Pannini ( which was good but not amazing), the special cookie ( which had chocolate, fruit, and nuts in it ), and a raspberry italian soda. Ordered the shaved steak, caramelized onion, havarti, sweet and hot peppers stuffed bread, and a pop tart to go. The order was ready in 3, maybe 4 minutes. Very efficient for a hot meal. The bread is fantastic. Very thin and crispy on the outside to hold together all the stuffing. The shaved steak is very fine so it doesn't feel stringy or get stuck in your teeth.Stuffed bread comes with a side salad, but this is more or less a handful of assorted lettuces and a container of dressing. I must have messed up! Had such high expectations for this spot. Came in and ordered the acclaimed sticky bun as well as a homemade Oreo. I was tempted to get even more with the excuse that I needed carbs for my upcoming marathon...But I was already being a fatty. The baked goods display looks incredible as do the savory items (sammies, quiche, salads). But my two items didn't hit all of the ideal notes despite the looks. The sticky bun is served warm, but it seemed like it was microwaved. Was pretty soft and lacked bite. It tasted ok, but it wasn't anything special. I enjoyed the Oreo cookie a bit more, but again, nothing to write home about. I'm a massive baked goods addict and the major test of awesomeness is how irrational I'll be to secure said goods. I absolutely loved this place. I took my little sister here for lunch yesterday and we both left feeling full and impressed. I got the tomato, mozzarella, and pesto sandwich. My little sister got the grilled chicken sandwich. Both came out beautifully done and our didn't take long at all. It was just the right balance of each ingredient. For dessert, I got creme brulee and she got carrot cake. She really enjoyed hers. I loved mine. It wasn't overly sweet and was generally awesome! Of course,I had to take something home. I brought a bread pudding and lemon raspberry cake home. I wasn't a huge fan of the bread pudding, but I loved thelemon raspberry cake. The service was quick and friendly. They were very helpful! Here's a breakdown of a few goodies I got to experience during a recent trip: -Raspberry jam bran muffin- Once you slice this baby in half, you achieve the perfect balance between dry, branny goodness and that moist jam center. This was seriously delicious. -Egg sandwich- why in the world would they deprive their local residents of this breakfast sandwich for so long? Word on the street is that this is a recent addition to the sandwich menu. All I can say is that this sandwich is definitely here to stay. -Chocolate macaroon- I don't even like macaroons, but I devoured this little guy. Super moist and fresh on the two days I stopped by. -Raspberry seltzer- super refreshing, but this little ingenious concoction gets super sweet as you work your way to the bottom of the cup. Be sure to sufficiently stir before gulping down your drink! -Apple Spice Cake- gooey, apple goodness that left my hands all sticky. After seeing Flour Bakery mentioned on Food Network, I knew I had to go try the sticky buns when I was in Boston. The sticky buns were delicious and lived up to the hype. I also ordered a smoked turkey sandwich, which contained cheddar and cranberry chutney. Althought it was crowded, service was fast and the staff was friendly. If I visit Boston again, I would want to go to Flour Bakery again and try out other items on the menu. I'll also make sure to order more sticky buns to take home! read more

Came here for lunch on a Thursday around 11am. This location is much smaller compared to the one on Clarendon St, not much seating. A lot of people were getting pick-up orders or getting food to go. But we ordered to dine in and grabbed 2 seats at a community table. I got the everything-spiced tuna + citrus salad, which had cooked tuna (like what comes in a can/packet), orange & grapefruit wedges, red gem lettuce, fennel, caper berries, mixed seed brittle (added sweetness and crunch), and a lemon-tahini vinaigrette for $10.50. I loved this salad! So fresh and lots of different flavors/textures going on. My husband got the hummus sandwich - fresh hummus, pickled daikon, big slices of cucumber, shredded carrots, peppers, vegan sriracha aioli (spicy!), & cilantro on focaccia bread. He loved it as well. In Oklahoma, most veggie sandwiches are a sad piece of lettuce, slice of tomato, maybe some cheese. THIS is how you do a veggie sandwich! We also shared a freshly baked parmesan & chive scone, which was great as well. There were so many other things on the menu I wanted to try - if we lived here I think I'd be a regular at Flour! :D P.S. Dear Flour in the South End, I've been coming here for over a year due to working close by. Although I'm not a sandwich girl I enjoy your lunch sandwiches. But I don't enjoy the price however the quality is insatiably good. I've also tried your breakfast French toast and oatmeal and those were quite good as well. Because the temperature is getting cooler I now order your soups of the day. I will say that you season your soups so well my mouth always craves more after each hot spoonful. I've even tried your pastries and those are killer delicious too. Why only a 4 star, well sometimes it's a bit chaotic in there and I don't know who's waiting for their order and who needs to place an order. I know your bakery isn't too big so one day I hope without renovations you'll be able to figure that one part out. Other than that I'll continue coming to you. read more
