Ambiance is super cute - we sat at a bar facing the windows and got plenty of sunlight. The restaurant was bustling, but service was pretty quick and friendly. We tried the baked french toast, which was dense and satisfying and delicious. If you don't normally enjoy french toast like me, I highly recommend giving this a try! I also got a london fog to sip on, and it was pretty standard earl grey tea bag + milk, nothing fancy. We also got a grilled cuban style sandwich and a layered cakr slice which I don't see on the menu, maybe it was seasonal. Probably Boston's best known and loved bakery. I used to make the trek across the city to their South End site as a college student when they first opened and now they're conveniently located throughout the city! They have fantastic sandwiches for lunch (some of my favorites are the seasonal turkey sandwich, chicken salad, roast beef, and the mushroom melt) as well as fresh salads, soups, quiches and pizza slices. The baked goods, though, are what especially set Flour apart from other well-regarded local bakeries and sandwich shops, in my opinion. Their unctuous, rich sticky buns are probably the most famous but their homemade Oreo cookies and pop-tarts are also highlights. They also have excellent cakes and pies by the slice or whole for birthday or other holiday/party needs. The staff are always kind and service is generally quite fast. This bakery location just recently opened close to my work. Pastries and sandwiches are really good in here. I think the prices are a little bit on the higher scale but if you don't mind spending it on good food I think you should go for it! I go here once in a while and I've had a few things ordered already. So far, I love the tuna salad with citrus and sandwiches. So far, I've got the mushroom and the Reuben and they came out really good. I've had the while mocha latte (it was alright, it tasted too much coffee for me) I'm not really too much of a coffee drinker so probably that's why. Also! The salmon chowder is die for. We went to the lakers/celtics game and then went out after for quite a few drinks. I can see why flour has so many store across Boston. It is a no frills cafe that serves up amazing pastries! My all time favorite is their pumpkin pie but that is only available around thanksgiving. In general you can't go wrong with any of their pastries. I typically get a box of 6 assorted. My husband and I nibble at it during the week, making every AM wake up that much more enjoyable. Their sandwiches are ok, sometimes dry, sometimes too moist. My go to that is consistently good is the mushroom grilled cheese and their spicy tomato soup. I first saw Joanne Chang whip up a delightful but laaaabor-intensive 'Sticky, Sticky Bun' recipe more than 10 years ago on "Throwdown With Bobby Flay". I was so spellbound by the stickiness, brown sugar, butteriness and brioche dough- I was hyped. Bought the ingredients and motivated my then 13 yr old daughter to help me make the buns. When push came to shove, our homemade 'Sticky Buns' were Chang's exact replica (ok...maybe not- but mine were fuccking good): brioche was soft, caramel was buttery and sticky which my daughter and I, devoured that shiit like in a day! I was even more speechless when I found out Chang's bakeries are in Boston! Due to her mission, background and her ingenuity it took to create these sticky buns, I've had Flour Bakery in my back pocket. After the Cambridge location we visited ran out of Sticky Buns, placing my order for a Sunday pickup was like a snap especially for this location closer to our hotel in Boston. My order was shelved in a designated section, ready for pickup then off I went with goodies in hand. Our Sticky Sticky Buns had almost all the signs: buttery richness, nutty and caramely goodness. Sadly, the Brioche bun itself was stiff and didn't have a typical brioche softness. Maybe it was an off day? Maybe they used day-old bread? Or maybe two day-old bread? My final take? Recently opened replacing the previous Au Bon Pain at the same location. Huge indoor open space, outdoor seating, and open upstairs area to make social distancing easy. There aren't any tables set up indoors but there is some seating by the window. They also take orders online that you can pick up in store. The shop was quite busy on a Friday morning so I highly recommend putting in a pickup order in advance if you are short on time. The employee at the register changed her gloves after every customer and there was a staff member walking around sanitizing tables while I was waiting for my order. There are also automatic hand sanitizer dispensers throughout. The menu is the same as other Flour Bakeries - pastries around $4, salads and sandwiches around $10+, and coffee/tea around $3-4. Everything looked so yummy. The sticky buns ($4.5) are amazing! super sweet, sticky, and soft. Great with a cup of tea or coffee. I also tried their citrus+fennel salad ($11.5), which was delicious. To the point Service: staff anticipated order and had it ready, served at my table outside. (Kinda noisy street in the AM, but it's Boston baby) Cleanliness: The outside area was clean, seating arrangement simple and ample. Food: I went ham (pun intended) with a ham and cheese croissant and a cinnamon roll. The ham and cheese croissant is always harder to bake perfectly because of the juices in the ham...they usually mess up the buttery layers of pastry You start to see the under cooked pastry...while this did happen (as expected) it was still a very good bite. There was a subtle heat to the dish that was very next level. It was a familiar profile although I can't seem to place the flavor...(middle eastern perhaps...but for purposes of this review I will never update and or find out what that was...but it was delicious). It was cooked as well as this pastry could be, buttery, flakey, the cheese was melted into the pastry and the ham bits were substantial. The c-roll!! I always believe that no one can touch my mothers cinnamon rolls, but I got it anyway to spite myself! Cinnamon roll was perfect! I would have thought they would heat it up, but For this specific cinnamon roll...I would never! It was not crunchy at all, but soft...still maintaining its breast integrity...yes I meant bread integrity, but breast integrity is now a thing! I knew by the look of it...it was covered by a glaze of some sort...not the ultra sugar rush you would get from moms, but a lightly sugared glaze that simply paired well with the appropriately sugared cinnamon roll. In the end I would have hated myself for not getting a second item to eat, because while it was a very tasty cinnamon roll...it was small and not very hearty. I think this was done on purpose and I super appreciate it, because I really didn't want to be full after eating it...so I could then destroy the croissant. I absolutely love the sun dried tomato aioli combined with the bacon and the focaccia bread compliments it perfectly. The chicken tikka masala naan is much heavier so very good if you're looking for a heavier meal. The cucumbers help balance out the richness of the sauce and the paneer cheese is a wonderful addition. This location was packed on Saturday at 1pm, but I knew I was willing to brave the semi-long ordering line when I saw their display filled with yummy pastries, desserts, and breads. I especially wanted to snag the famed sticky bun. If you're not one to wait, online ordering is available through their app. The line moved quickly as there were many staff available, and I was especially struck by how friendly the employees were. My total came out to $11.77 including tax ($5 sticky bun, $6 pie slice). Food: Their pastries seems a little pricey, but they are soooo good and well worth the price! The sticky bun is (rightfully) sweet, perfectly paired with a cup of cold coffee. I got it to-go and microwaved it for 30 seconds, and it was perfectly soft like a cinnamon roll. It definitely reminded me of pecan pie... but in bun form lol. I also REALLY liked the coconut cream pie-- not too sweet, but had the perfect taste of custard and sweet coconut blended together.
