Absolutely love Flour Bakery + Cafe. I only came to this one for the first time recently though. Can say it's just as amazing as all the others. I got their version of an Oreo cookie (basically a giant Oreo without the Oreo logo on the cookie sides, and freshly made) for $2 and a chocolate cupcake for $3.50. The chocolate cupcake was incredibly moist and soft. The frosting was surprisingly light and soft as well, so I'm guessing they make their own rather than buy it. They have a decent sized seating area and *clean* bathrooms for customers. The products here might be pricier than going to a bakery section at a grocery store or just a local bakery, but I'm okay with paying more if I really feel like the quality is that much higher. I've never been disappointed by anything at Flour Bakery. Easily 5 stars worthy. read more

I came to flour for the first time the other day at 8 am when they opened. They had a wide variety of baked goods and options. The French roast coffee was very good and a good size for the price too. I got a quiche with mushrooms and gruyere and it was the best quiche slice of my life. The eggs were so fluffy and delicious. For dessert I got a gingerbread muffin which was spicy and not over the top sweet. I hope to come back to try lunch options and explore more of the area. read more

Great sandwiches and baked goods, good salads, weak-ish coffee. I've stopped here a few times on recent visits to Cambridge and really enjoyed the food, the sandwiches in particular. The smoked turkey sandwich features turkey, cheddar cheese, cranberry, lettuce and sage mayo on really delicious multigrain bread. Perfect, would definitely get again. The Cobb salad was also good, healthy and filling. It features well-dressed romaine, chicken breast, tomato, cucumber, red onion, chickpeas, feta, olives, and mildly spicy banana peppers. Definitely good, and would get again. My only knock (and it's a minor one) is that the dressing, feta and olives were mild in flavor. I guess they have to cater to a wide range of tastes, but I'd personally prefer those ingredients to be more assertive. As for the coffee . . . if you like it brewed strong (Starbucks-strength), you'll find theirs a bit lacking. They offer both regular and dark roasts, so it's not a question of roast (I ordered the dark), it's that the ratio of ground coffee to water is too low. Sticky Bun: best I've ever had. the dough is very moist. a ton of pecans and gooey sticky top, sweet, they sell out by 3ish so go early! Banana Bread: moist, flavorful, just like homemade. really good. not too sweet Vegan Chocolate cake/muffin: deep chocolate flavor. moist. delicious. If you like sweets, this isn't for you. After the raving reviews I decided to spend one my limited breakfast/brunch days at this place. The line goes by quickly which is a plus. They have clear signs that say sweets/drinks pickup and food pickup. There were a handful of logistical issues that I had while I was there. The first, I ordered a coffee and delicious roll. They called my name for the coffee but that didn't come with my roll. I get it, they just call your items as they're ready but I saw others around me just as confused " I got an xyz with that". The second, I hate cafes that don't make your coffee especially when there's limited space to begin with. You have to add your own cream, sugar etc and that station across from the food pickup where everyone is posting up waiting for their food. It's just awkward and unnecessary. Lastly, I wish they would call names out more than once. In between getting my food/drinks each time they were ready and going outside to drop them off, my order was called. Eventually I walked up and saw my sandwiches were done for who knows how long. Skip the sandwich it's mediocre, I wish they used local potato chips. If you have to go, stick to the sticky buns. read more

I was visiting Boston and 3 different friends recommended the Sticky Buns here. They're that good! The Boston Cream Pie is also quite tasty. I went for a late morning snack and it was so packed we barely got a seat. Just walk up, order, then grab a seat. I have been meaning to try Flour ever since they destroyed Bobby Flay on his sticky bun throwdown. But when it got mentioned again on Food Network's "Best Thing I Ever Ate," I knew I could not sleep on this anymore. It was the ONLY item on the show from Boston, in my own back yard (metropolitanly speaking, since I'm technically a Cantabrigian). Dutifully, I typed Flour into a Yelp search, preparing to make a tedious trek to the South End... you can imagine my shock when Yelp returned several locations, including one in my home turf Central Square that opened just this month! Yes! Scurried over first thing in the morning, and managed to finagle the very last sticky bun (around 9am, nightowls). They put it in a little nice box for me, and I hurried home like a deranged squirrel. This is what followed: (I pick up sticky concoction and take a cautious bite) Me: Wtf? Is this still WARM? (another bite, this time with more caramel) Are you freaking kidding me? (put bun down and stare at it for a minute) "You're the devil, aren't you?" (it doesn't respond, so I take another bite, this time with toasted pecans and more brioche dough) "Oh come on! You can't be serious!" (I go Tazmanian Devil all over its ass). Yeah, what they say about the sticky bun is true. Good grief. That was five hours ago, and I'm still kind of fantasizing about it. read more

After a long and arduous flight from Oakland to Boston, one of my bffs and I stopped here for large iced coffees on a muggy and hot day. It was one of the best coffees I've ever had, and not just because we were so desperately in need of a pick-me-up (though seriously, this coffee practically saved our lives). The coffee was very rich but not bitter, and there were plenty of customizable milk and sweetener options. We didn't get anything to eat, but the displays were very enticing, and of the pastries and treats would make great gifts (cute packaging, etc). I hope to find myself back in the area again; I'd certainly get another coffee, and if it were for a meal, I'd probably get the steel-cut oatmeal with sliced almonds and fresh fruit, or a salad. On all of my trips, I always find that one place that just makes me feel at home. In DC, it was The Coupe, in San Juan, Kasalta Bakery stole my heart, and in Boston, Flour was that place. The place where I had a leisurely breakfast, where I stopped in to charge my phone (in the bathroom of all places, sadly no outlets anywhere else) and grab a quick latte, and where I picked up a sandwich to go to feast on at the airport. Yup, that's right, in the span of 3 days, I went to Flour 3 times. That's a 1:1 ratio, guys. The place itself is really cute and service is usually speedy. There is a ton of seating, but during peak hours it definitely fills up quickly. And, if you're planning to squat around and do some work, beware, because there are no outlets!! Except in the bathroom. So maybe instead of working on your laptop you can straighten your hair? Lol jk. I had everything from breakfast pastries to sandwiches. The almond croissant is definitely a must get. The woman working behind the counter said it was her favorite and I totally understand why - the almond flavor really stands out, the pastry is light and flaky, and it's just pretty damn great overall. However, we also tried the sour cream coffee cake one day, and I would definitely recommend skipping it. Coffee cake is supposed to be crumbly and almost melt in your mouth, but this was almost as hard as a rock, and the flavor wasn't anything special. The sandwiches are what kept me returning. Yes, I know, they are just sandwiches. But those are some damn good sandwiches. Both of the sandwiches I tried were really good - the first: roasted chicken, mashed avocado, jicama; and the second: roast beef, horseradish mayo, crispy onions, tomato. I can tell you this, the people sitting next to me at the airport/on the plane were definitely jealous of my delicious-looking sandwich. It's Saturday, 7:15ish in the morning and a friend and I roll into Flour ready to grab a few sticky buns for the road trip to NH/ME. I'll admit it was a little dark inside but there were fresh baked goods already on display and no less than four employees in the shop. "Sorry sir, we're not open yet." Last time I checked we were in a full blown recession and the economy was floating like a dead dog down the river...yet amazingly Flour is doing so well they can turn people away. I worked at a similar establishment when I was young and my manager would have lost his mind if I sent customers away without at least attempting to service them. I had money, they had fresh product on display, all that was missing was an employee savvy enough to work out an alternative. So, I've come to a conclusion. My tastebuds as well as my fat cells are in agreement. Joanne Chang is the great Satan. She is the corrupting influence that destroys any notion of "diet" and does so gleefully, smilingly, kindly, with a brief but brutal assault of my taste buds. There is no turning back... there is only sobbing into my sleeve as I approach the line, helpless to avoid going back for another Cinnamon Bun. Or that lemon and raspberry torte. Or that vanilla cupcake with the whipped chocolate ganache buttercream. Or that banana/chocolate bread pudding. In addition to regular worship at her altar, I grabbed her cookbook... and its erudite, doesnt talk down to you, and presents amazingly tasty recipes in an easy to use format that really do come out true to the recipe. Because of her intellectual conversational tone in the book, MANY of my friends all refer to her as "My friend Joanne" though we've never met her... its EXACTLY as though you're best friend just happened to be an award winning baker (WELL DESERVED!) and you had asked her how to make something... The problem is that she makes it for you at extremely convenient locations that Ive rationalized as being easy to jog to... at least Im jogging, right? Its excercise. I make good decisions. Left this place with sort of an all-around 'meh' feeling. The sandwiches are *good*, don't get me wrong, but they just seemed to be lacking. The bread was fresh and everyone knows that the bread really MAKES a sandwich. The flavors didn't really stand out to me, however. I had roasted lamb with goat cheese and tomato chutney. You'd think the goat cheese would be powerful, the chutney delicious, the lamb succulent - nope. Kinda fell flat. The chutney was... odd. I tried the girlf's roast chicken, jicama, and avocado. Kinda bleh. Avocado needs something else there for flavor, imo. Like a salty tortilla chip. Or bacon. Their pastries are where it's at... can't deny that. Perhaps *the* BEST sticky bun I've ever had. Srsly. Had a muffin another time and asked for it grilled--couldn't do that, they said. So I asked for some butter - would cost me 25 cents. Yikes. Really, dude? Everyone who works here is so cool, aren't they? They are so extremely hip that the they can't look lame or whatever. In fact, the sandwich makers all have really good looking head gear that they purposely wear loosely and asymmetrically. It is a shame that it doesn't work. I found a hair in my sandwich! ARG! Flour Bakery, make them wear hair nets under their personalised head gear. Don't let their fashion sense dictate your basic sanitation policies. Additionally, the counter workers are all still pretty much untrained monkeys. Hey, do I have to go behind the counter and show them how to properly assemble a flat-packed cardboard box? Come on, don't let them tape it together with 5 pieces of tape when they don't need to use tape. You paid good money for those boxes. As an aside, Flour Bakery, you should have them slap on a "Flour Bakery" sticker on the box to brand it. Oh, get the counter workers to repeat order so they know they heard orders correctly. Correcting orders is such a pain given that the person who took the original order has now moved on to 2 other customers and said person is now ignoring me. Although it was crowded, the atmosphere felt cozy and welcoming--I can't wait to come back once we can gather together again. This is a nice little local chain bakery that has amazing sandwiches and great cup of coffee. I got the portobello melt, which was very yummy and had w lot of melted cheese in it. I've only been to this location once so far, and it was as good as the other locations. I came in during breakfast hours and picked up an iced coffee and a savory scone. The scone was very good, but it wasn't salted enough. I endorse baking savory goods with salted butter and I think that would have balanced it out a little more. The cheddar and scallion flavors shined through and the pastry was buttery and flakey. The service was very friendly despite the line and slightly annoying patrons before and after me. I was responsible for the birthday girl's cake and that's a mighty big chore. Back home, I'd swing by Urth Cafe or Sweet Lady Jane's but this is Boston, baby! I scan the yelp-ster and come across a place in Brookline. Hit their website and their cakes start at $200 (Yeah right, I'm a real person not a drug dealer!). Then I came across Flour and their cakes start at $40 (Finally, a retailer from planet Earth!). Flour serve's food so I figured I 'd have lunch and a pastry and if that's good then the cake should be too. I had the stuffed bread with turkey and gruyere and.... yum, yum, YUM! Forget sex and then a ham sandwich, have this sandwich first! For a pastry I tried the lowfat vegan chocolate cupcake. I know, it sounds like an oxymoron but it's a tasty one! De-lic-ious! Reminds me of the vegan chocolate cake at Real Food Daily in Santa Monica. The girl likes chocolate so I got her the Midnight Chocolate Cake on Wednesday to pick up 8 AM Saturday (needs to sit out 4-5 hours before serving). Saturday I'm there at 8 AM and the place is packed (why are all these people up at this hour?). My cake isn't ready so they offer me a latte and tell me 15 minutes. Thirty minutes later, I'm like how freakin' hard is it to frost 'Happy Birthday' on a cake? Forty-five minutes later, I'm asking them for quarters for the meter because I'm running out. An hour later, I have my cake. Me not happy. The cake and buttercream frosting were epic but the ganache put it over the top. When I say cut yourself a small piece to enjoy it, I mean take the piece you consider small and divide it by half because it's that rich. I know I should give them a lower rating for making me wait an hour but when food is that good I don't care if they punch me in the face (figuratively speaking). If you like simple but delicious food, stop by, but make sure you have plenty of spare time and quarters for parking. read more

Despite the crazy construction around the area, Flour remains a cute place to grab a coffee and brioche bun in the morning. It gets equally crazy inside (so many people!), but if you're lucky enough to grab a table for two, you could potentially spend hours here. It's got a great ambiance: bright and simple... and who doesn't love the constant smell of coffee and baked bread in the air? MmmmMmmmm. As many people have said, try the brioche, try the sticky bun... try any of their baked goodies for a delightful morning treat. I opted for the iced coffee (I refuse to accept that summer is over... not until the fat snowflakes sing!), and was happy to add my own milk and sweetener at the cream and sugar station. A lovely blend of beans, if I do say so myself. And not badly priced. For a big sugar bun and iced coffee, it only ran me a bit over $5. Not bad. Not bad at all. Delightful place to snag a filling sandwich and obscene pastry while scoping out the MIT hotties. Yes, I said it. MIT has some fine looking scientists. Or maybe I've been in California for too long.... Regardless -- a perfect place for a casual nosh, though be prepared to aggressively hover for a table/seat. Food takes abt 10 min to arrive -- favorite part was the obscene amnt of hummy they put on my salad (all sandwiches can be made as salads) -- and of course, the orgiastic carb fest that is their bread and cookie selection. Homemade oreos? Check. Bread pudding? Check. Guinness cupcakes? Check. Decent service, erring on the side of "too hipster-y" for my taste, but such is life when you're rolling around in Cambridge. Their breakfast egg sandwich with bacon and their lamb sandwich are amazingly delicious. Best sandwiches I've ever had but I'm also from Chicago and I've heard that Boston takes their sandwiches seriously. Their lamb sandwich has this creamy goat cheese and tomato chutney which tastes perfect with the mounds of lamb they put on it. I could eat two but then I wouldn't have room for their egg sandwich. I think it's the dijonaise that they put on the egg sandwich to make it so tasty. Their Boston cream pie is really good. It's not overly sweet, the cake is really spongy, and the cream is light. I've tried the famous sticky bun which is surprisingly soft on the inside with delicious toasted pecans to give it a crunch. I would suggest sharing it unless you really like rich pastries. I would suggest not getting any of their coffees. It tastes like dirty water. I hate saying that but their sandwiches and pastries totally make up for it. It was hard to narrow it down to four..make it five, breakfast sandwich is also divine! Now I know everyone has probably said all the wonderful things there may be to say, but I want to specifically gush about how sweet the people at Flour were for my bakery order I placed to bring back the goodies to Texas! Apparently, one of my uncles goes to church with Joanne's parents. My mom, my aunt, and another uncle read about Flour in the newspaper.. you know how the story goes. Suddenly, I get flooded with calls and emails two days before I come back to Texas.. "Can you please bring me the famous sticky bun?" "Banana bread, pain aux raisin, scone, what is better? Can I try them all?" I called ahead asking if I could place an order for some of the pastries, and they were really patient with me, gave me suggestions for what was good/not good for traveling, instructions to heat up certain items, etc. I even had to call back to add more items to each of the boxes. When I picked the goodies up the next day, they had split my boxes up accordingly and everything was right! I was having trouble keeping straight what I needed, but luckily they were on top of it. After 6 hours of travel, security scanning, bumping against oblivious travelers, and accidentally kicking the boxes when under the airplane seat in front of me, all the pastries/scones remained intact! Somehow, there was barely any movement, and everything looked almost as good as in the store. I would eat here every day.. if only I also ran 20 miles/day to keep up with the calories.. yum read more

Back when I lived in Boston, I did not know how good I had it. Since leaving, I've realized that Flour Bakery is just the perfect bakery. It has the fancy French pastries, the stick-to-your bones homey baked goods, the delicious sandwiches, soups and salads, the flavorful coffee - it has everything you could ever want, for any time of the day, for any mood, and yet still feels like a cohesive, comfortable, and well thought-out space. I got to stop by not once, but twice during my last visit to Boston. The first time, we stopped in for a pre-brunch snack and ordered an iced coffee and the berry bread pudding. We were pleasantly surprised about the coffee - it was so good, we just drank it black. The bread pudding, an old favorite of mine, was decadent and super filling, with a custard-like texture. The second time, I basically forced someone to take me there for a pre-departure breakfast, where we ordered the breakfast sandwich, a kouign amann (I think Flour calls it a "Breton pastry"), Flour's famous sticky bun, and a croissant. The breakfast sandwich could have done with less mustard (tip: unless you love mustard, ask for less mustard, because otherwise, they slather both slices of bread with mustard!), but the sandwich still impressed us with its creamy, custardy, and unique egg filling. No additional words need to be said about the sticky bun - with its brioche base and filling that achieves that perfect balance of savory-sweet, it is as good as the hype. The kouign amann might have been my favorite pastry - it looks like a humble mass of pastry dough, but because of its irregular shape, each bite has a mix of crunchy, caramelized bits and tender, buttery pastry. So so good. Our cashier during the breakfast hour deserves special mention - he was prompt, friendly, helpful, and brightened up our morning. (Also, his clear-rimmed glasses were super cool.) After my last trip, I actually bought the cookbook, and Joanne Chang is kind enough to provide a lot of her greatest hits in one easy-to-read cookbook. Never mind that the kouign amann recipe looks like it'll take me an entire expletive-filled day to complete - I crave Flour Bakery's baked goods enough that I'm willing to try. read more

I absolutely have a sweet tooth. I love Flour's array of baked goods. I know that Flour is known for their sticky buns, which are delicious, but I think that there are better options like their muffins. I also am a huge fan of their selection of baked breads. I like how they include a side salad with the baked bread. It seems to balance out the meal to make you feel less guilty for consuming something that although has fresh ingredients, may not particularly be all that healthy. I mean come on, most of them have lots of cheese. No complaints here though. I also am a huge fan of their raspberry seltzer. So delicious and refreshing. I sometimes think about this drink as a way to get through my long runs. I would give this place 5 stars, but I've been to the South End location and I feel that their staff is more friendly than Central Square's location. read more

I also got the raspbery seltzer which was also good. I also sampled some of the blueberry bread pudding, which I didnt care for, as well as a lemon raspberry torte type dessert, which I thought had nice flavor but got rather sweet after just a few bites. Came here on a Sunday afternoon, and the line seemed to ebb and flow, but it moved pretty quickly though. They also have some outdoor tables, which were all taken, as well as a bar...and I think on the otherside with the sandwich area probably had some seating too. read more

Roast Beef sandwich, pony sauce, greens, and crispy onions. That's where it's at for me. My boyfriend loves the lamb sandwich (Lambchop was one of my favorite kid shows, therefore I don't eat lambs. True story). I like to couple it with a cupcake, or the low fat chocolate (muffin) cake. The chocolate cake is so rich, you won't even know that it's low fat. The pop tarts are also delicious. And the Sticky Buns are not cinnamon buns, don't be confused. They're more of a citrus like flavor. It's definitely a must try. I could eat everything here basically and be happy for a long long time. This place gets busy really fast. I only go if there's 10 people or less in line (usually because I'm running by on my morning run). But I'm told you can call in an order. Always a great experience at these locations. The staff here were funny as I debated between the sticky bun and the pan au chocolate...of course I got the sticky bun! It's prefect and can beat bobby flay any day. When we said we were waiting for the bus, they said 30 seconds for my friends egg sandwich and the other staff said 'oh really? 30, 29, 28....' which was funny. He made it and then we made the bus! read more

The sandwiches are so good that you don't want them to end. True story. However there is a bit of a "snob" vibe from the service. This place gets talked up a lot and I guess there is a cookbook or something so maybe the people that work there feel like they are beyond the whole shop thing. But I do not remember one employee being friendly or smiling the whole time I interacted with them. Not the person who took my order or the person who handed me a sandwich, or their coworkers! The sandwiches are beyond fabulous but that doesn't mean you can't smile and help me with the menu when I'm ordering. Oh and the prices are waaaayy pricey but it's worth a splurge every once in a while for a great sandwich. The service was a buzz kill- 2 stars. read more
