Been in the shop around 3 or 4 times - got great recommendations on some flies and streamer setup for the Truckee River. Caught a couple great sized rainbows and browns on the Truckee and Provo from the stuff I got there - might've spent easily $100 on flies alone. Really enjoyed talking with store owners - most of the technical stuff goes over my head, but they're great guys. And yeah, quality fly line is around $80-$125. That's just quality, brother. We are lucky to have Fly Fishing Specialties here in the Sacramento Area. They carry a large selection of fly fishing equipment, including used gear. I bought my pre-owned 9' 5 weight rod and Spey Rod here and paid what I thought was a very fair price for both. They have a great selection of flies for the local rivers. Rick, Boomer and Lee have been great to deal with and have always treated me like an old hand even though I have only been fly fishing since November 2025. I have been fly fishing for 20 years, I have recently started fly tying as a hobby, I have been in that store probably 10 times. I will NEVER GO AGAIN. They have the worst customer service, if you don't buy 500$ worth of stuff, the. You are wasting their time. I took a friend that is new to the sport, literally treated him like he was an idiot. They are way over priced, and I have to drive 40 min to their store. I guess I will get my supplies on line or somewhere else. I miss Kiene's fly shop they were good people. Pinnacle of honesty. I went into the store a couple of weeks ago based on my own assumption I needed new fly line. While there, I asked the employee to take a look at my fly line on my reel. He told me it just looks dirty and sold me some fly line cleaner for a dollar. I had expected to pay over one hundred dollars for fly line. He correctly assessed the issue and set me straight. True honesty and integrity. I've been a customer before, but I will certainly be coming back with good character and business practices like that. read more

I've visited this shop a few times, and always had a great experience. The staff have always been patient and very helpful, providing solid recommendations regarding gear. During a recent visit, even before the staff member knew I was making a purchase, he inspected my existing reel and line setup. I assumed the reel was no longer serviceable. He gave me some tips on the disassembly and confirmed the reel was working fine, and even volunteered to remove excess backing from the reel for me while I was shopping. After purchasing a new reel, rod, and line he installed the line/backing as well. I know most shops will do this, but I've encountered some that don't. I previously bought a set of waders and wading boots here. Each visit the staff were attentive and helped with purchase decisions, and I have never felt upsold or rushed. They also provided a lot of information regarding various fishing locations and fly recommendations. There is a reason I drive two hours one way to give them my business. Highly recommend. read more

Got a fly rod as a gift for Christmas, went in to buy some fishing line before i was going up hiking and gonna take the fishing tod to try out... they quoted me over $100 for one roll of fishing line... then got all huffy and told me it was the cheapest one available when i said "$100 for fishing line?!?!?!?", they said "it's not fishing line it's FLYLINE", I said I don't care what you call it, of it's that expensive, I can't afford this hobby" and walked out. They seemed offended and I was definitely offended... Went home and checked on amazon and bought a roll for $18 (not even the cheapest stuff)... then went to bass pro shops and they spooled it on the reel for free... Avoid this shop like the plague! theyre just looking to rip people off and are ungodly expensive...​ and act like you're an asshole of you say anything about the cost... read more

If you're a fly tyer in the Sac area DEFINITELY check this place out. And if you're not in the area, it's worth the drive. Knowledgable staff and very friendly. A great selection of materials would be an understatement. They have it all here. Probably the largest range of everything from hackles and hair to hooks and beads and everything in between in all of CA. It was my first time in the shop today after having just moved to the area and I was like a kid in a candy shop. Full service fly shop. Rods, reels, flies, fishermen, gear, and novelties all here. I just grabbed a couple books (and a saltwater popper for conventional fishing purposes) to start learning about fly fishing. The staff was totally helpful and gave me suggestions on events where I could learn more in the future, didn't pressure me into anything and were very good to the other customers. It's always a good sign when fishing guides use a shop for their gear, and this is the case at this store. They have all the high end brands, and a great selection of used rods. My inspiration for the fly fishing journey coming up is the California Heritage Trout Challenge by the DFW, was informed the guy who actually wrote and launched the program works here. This place gave me a positive feeling and even though they are a couple hours away from where I live, I'll likely be back in the future. read more

Man, this place is awesome. I recently got into fly fishing and decided to check out the Pleasanton fly expo. FFS was there in full-force. Gear, swag, different brands and knowledge. They had it all. Best part was they did everything with a smile and patience. I felt like they were there to help not sell. But I did buy gloves, line and a new rod. Rich was a pleasure to work with. By far this is one of the best stores around for fly fishing supplies and other accessories. The staff here are friendly and very knowledgeable. It's nice to see the actual product in hand than ordering it from some shady online shop and not know what you're getting or if you're going to get it. AMAZING I live outa town and I make a pilgrimage to FFS whenever I'm in the area. There are other fly shops around Sac and I must say as a bass fisherman cum fly fisher those shops are off-putting. I have been bad-vibed by the "old school traditionalists" (grouchy codgers) that work at those shops on more than one occasion. FFS has an incredible selection of flies, fly tying kit along with beautiful rods and reels. Add to that the fact that these folks always have the latest YETI gear in stock. Even if you don't fly fish, FFS deserves a visit as they are the subject matter experts on local waters and can get you all spun-up on international fishing destinations as well. The staff was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. They informed me of the right flies to use for the time of year and the river. And the ones they suggested, which were certain colors and shapes close but not exact to the ones I already had, the fish seemed to be even more responsive than usual. One of the staff even showed me one of his favorite spots on a map and his go-to technique. Finally, he lent 2-3 micro-size flies that all worked like he said as I have always been hesitant to use midges under size 20 and I do not like using splitshot or 3 flies to get them down. All in all, this shop is quiet, honest, and has everything. This place has a great selection of fly gear. I've been here a few times already and the customer service isn't great though. For ex: Yesterday I came in to get some flies. The gentleman helping me was helpful, until one of their buddies came in with a wading boot issue, then he just left and was chatting with his buddy and never came back. I don't mind him helping other customers, but there was already 2 of the other employees talking with that customer. And the issue was: should we glue the boot or send it in? I don't want to feel like I'm being annoying by getting some advice but many times it feels like that when I come here. Our fishing trip farther north fell apart and we ended up in the Roseville area. We stopped in to get some direction on where to go and the staff was awesome. Pointed us in 2 directions, one big water system and one small water system, reviewed a couple techniques with my wife and helped out with fly options. I came to this shop a few times before they moved to the new location. I havent been coming to this new location all that long, because its a ways from my house, but so far I have been very pleased. They really do have an excellent selection of tying materials, and the staff have always been very helpful and pleasant, so I certainly have no complaints. Often I have to resort to the internet to find specific materials, but they usually have it in stock; at least that is my experience so far. We stopped in this past week on the way home from a short vacation we took (covid safe of course). My boyfriend, who is an avid flyfisherman, really wanted to stop here to pick up some tying supplies that we are not able to get at home in Reno. Long story short, we ended up getting a nail in our tire and got out of the shop at 5:45, and we were 15 minutes away still. Fly fishing specialties closed at 6. We were pretty bummed that we were going to not be able to make this stop, after anticipating it all day driving home. I had nothing to lose, so I gave them a call to see if they would possibly be willing to stay open for a little bit longer (I explained the circumstances and our love for the shop). I spoke with Rick, who without hesitation agreed to stay open for us for just a bit longer. We promised him we wouldn't just be browsing the store, and would be in and out as quick as we could be. I thanked him repeatedly and he said "no problem". He easily could've said no, especially if he was anticipating going home to his family, significant other, or even headed to plans right after work. I truly appreciate him understanding about our situation and being so accommodating. I'm not a avid fisher, but my pops is.. He was going on a fishing trip up north, and I wanted to surprise him with something special. I took a trip to the north area and I'm so glad it did! The gear, the staff, and their unbelievable comprehension and appreciation for everything fish is out of this world. When you first walk in (and if you're a newbie like me) it'll seem overwhelming, but just speak to any one of the very resourceful and intelligent employees and they'll set your mind at ease. (I suggest visiting while George is in, very funny and straight forward, like talking to an old friend from high school) I came away with a one of a kind lure that my pops swears was the best hitter all week! Amazing shop. I am new to the area and found this gem. The shop is only 5 minutes away from me as I spotted it driving home on the 80. My first visit, the owner had me all geared up with rod/reel, spooled on the line and gave me backing for free along with charging me for only half the flies and showed me a great fishing hole on the American.
