This was my first time at The Flying Biscuit Cafe. There is a small lot on the side and street parking, so you have to get in where you can. There were parties waiting outside, we only had a party of 3 and were told the wait was about 15min which isn't bad. The host and our server were both very nice. Let me first start by saying that I don't often leave reviews positive or negative. And, that's not because I have nothing to say. But every now and then, because I am a consumer, I think it's important to simply share my experiences. They are my experiences and based upon my opinions. If my perceptions were wrong, I'm happy to correct them. So, here we go! There are five things. I usually judge restaurant by. 1. Aesthetics/Cleanliness - pertains to the visual elements and design of a space 2. Ambience - refers to the atmosphere or mood of a particular space 3. Service - employee reception, service, and demeanor. 4. Presentation of the Food - appeal 5. Taste of the Food - that should be obvious! Local Restaurant Review - A 65th Birthday Visit As I approached the restaurant, it gave off a contemporary vibe. One wall of exposed brick hinted at the building's history, while the opposite wall featured colorful mosaics that brightened up the room and added a fresh, artistic feel. The ceiling was painted black with minimal lighting, functional but not particularly impressive. You are not walking into a posh venue here; it is a local eatery with a relaxed, no frills atmosphere. Some of the booth seating showed definite signs of wear and tear, with visible tape covering cracked plastic in a few spots. It was still usable, just not the kind of seating you would want in your living room. The tables were solid, and the hardwood chairs were sturdy enough for a 30 minute meal, but not built for comfort beyond that. The floors appeared slightly grimy, possibly on purpose as part of a rustic aesthetic, but it gave the impression of needing a bit more attention. Overall, the brick and mosaic blend gave the space a nice touch of old meets new. The atmosphere was pleasant enough, though I do not recall any background music. I chose this spot on a whim for my 65th birthday, drawn in by the promise of waffles, and while the setting did not exactly shine, it did not disappoint either. Aesthetics: 3 out of 5 Ambiance: 4 out of 5 Nothing fancy, but comfortable and functional for a casual dining experience. Service - 4 out of 5 The service was one of the highlights. It took a minute for someone to come over, but not too long. The young man who initially greeted us was personable and welcoming. Our waitress arrived shortly after with water and gave us space to look over the menu. She was kind, chatty, and even offered warm congratulations when I mentioned my birthday, which by the way, the restaurant does absolutely nothing to acknowledge. So do not expect a song, a dance, or even a candle in your waffle. (Laugh if you must.) She took our order efficiently, brought our drinks, and checked in without being intrusive. The food did take a bit longer than expected, about 15 to 20 minutes, which felt like a stretch for simple breakfast plates. But overall, the staff brought good energy and did their part with a smile. Food and Taste - 3 out of 5 The menu featured a nice range of brunch options. My partner went with shrimp and grits, and I chose a waffle topped with peaches, chicken sausage, and a small helping of cheese grits. I was a little surprised that grits without cheese were not an option, but you can always skip them. The best part of my meal was the waffle. It was warm, fluffy, and flavorful. The peaches, though pale in color, actually tasted pretty good. The rest of the plate, however, missed the mark. The eggs were not hot, the sausage was dry, and the grits were just lukewarm. The scrambled eggs had that boxed look, uniform in texture and color, so I asked for a replacement. I requested sunny side up, hoping for real eggs, but what came back were scrambled again, softer but still scrambled. To make matters a bit worse, I found what appeared to be a small half circle hair in the eggs. I didn't do any scientific testing at the table, but I think I know a beard hair when I see one. I quietly moved that section aside just in case and ate what I could. It was not a dealbreaker, but it certainly did not help. Taste: 3 out of 5 Mediocre, but not. The waffle saved the meal. Presentation - 3 out of 5 The plating was clean and decently done. Despite the minor mishap with the hair, the food looked thoughtfully arranged. Good lighting helped with the overall presentation. Final Thoughts The total bill came to about $40 dollars with tip, not bad for brunch for two. It did not ruin my birthday by any means, but it also did not leave me wanting to return. It was simply another dining experience, pleasant enough, but lacking the wow factor. That said, I still believe places grow when they listen to thoughtful feedback. Reviews like this are not meant to tear anyone down. They help good places become better. So go ahead and try it for yourself. Every visit is different. Mine just happened to be okay. read more

On our hunt for the next family favorite brunch spot we tried out the flying biscuit. Service was amazing and the restaurant was so cute! When it gets a little warmer they also have an outside patio you can eat at. Their menu sounded very promising, I ended up going with the fried green tomato blt that came with kettle chips and came with a fresh made biscuit, my husband went with the French toast, grits and chicken sausage patties and my daughter wanted a waffle with whipped cream. The cranberry apple butter was probably the highlight of my meal with the biscuit. My daughter loved her waffle- it was thick and fluffy and she ate almost the entire thing. The food came pretty fast and was ok. The portions for the price were on the smaller side. The food was ok- the highlight was for sure the service. Straight Up THEFT! It's seems it's acceptable here for a server to round out the change to their benefit! I was to receive 7.38 change. They brought 7 and when I asked why I was told "Sir, I don't have 38 cents! She immediately got mad and said "here I'll just give you the dollar if it's THAT important to you!" Stopped here because my wife was looking for breakfast and this spot came up. As we walked in the ambiance was relaxed and lively. We were quickly greeted by a receptionist who advised us we needed to wait to be seated. A few minutes later we were seated. Menu had a bunch of good choices and I had to decide whether to go with old faithful choices or try something new. I tried something new and went with the Dirty Bird and Waffles and was not disappointed. The tenders were nice and juicy, with just the right amount of spice. It's conveniently located on Harden street in the Five points area, and they have on site customer parking. As we pulled up we noticed that they were very busy at 10am, so I'd recommend you going early in the morning. There is nearby street parking within walking distance, so you shouldn't have any issues with parking. As we entered we noticed that they had outdoor or indoor seating available. We decided to grab a couple of seats at their bar, so that way we wouldn't have to wait. Everything we ordered was seasoned very well, and we definitely enjoyed our breakfast. However, After reviewing the menu and receiving my waffle, I noticed a few toppings were missing. The eggs lacked seasoning and the waffle was basic. The grits were tasty. The orange juice, biscuit and mango mimosa were my favorite. The service was rather slow but my waiter and waitress did their best as it appeared they were busy. Flying Biscuit is such a great addition to the Columbia area! I went on a weekday morning, so it wasn't crowded, and parking was not hectic. They have a very small lot adjacent to the building. Otherwise, it is street parking and possibly parking across the street, at your own risk, of course. The inside is a nice size. There are tables and a bar area. Customer service was pretty good, which is appreciated! The menu holds a pretty large variety, which is great. I ordered grits, of course, along with steak and eggs. I also ordered hot chocolate. Went here for brunch and had a good time! Overall I liked the inside and how it felt. Although I could tell they were short staffed at that time as they only had one waiter waiting on all the tables, which I understands happens at times and they did a wonderful job getting food out as quickly as possible. And it seemed the kitchen manager was helping as well! Overall the food was good, but I felt it was a bit pricey for some of the food considering how it tasted.I got the flying biscuit breakfast with a pancake. The pancakes were great as well as the grits, but the sausage wasn't the best or most flavorful, same with the scrambled eggs I had gotten. They do offer lattes there and I got one, it came out in a mug and looked great as well as tasted great! I would recommend this place overall. They were surprisingly busy for a Monday (as I was told by our waitress) and the service was extremely slow. I waited to be seated for about five minutes since there were only two servers and a pretty full cafe. We didn't mind the wait since we were there for a long chat anyway. They had plenty of time to use the warming lamps because it took 25 minutes to get our food after we ordered. It also took 25 minutes to put in our order. Seriously, we sat for 25 minutes before anyone stopped by our table. Even as we were finishing we had to flag down the waitress to get the bill, then again to get her to take our credit card, and AGAIN to get a pen. That was representative of the service throughout. First time at any Flying Biscuit and I had been looking forward to it only to get a subpar experience. The food was slightly above normal. The white cheddar grits were terrific. The portion left a lot to be desired. I was still hungry when I left and I normally do not finish my plate but I did today. The presentation on the food when it was brought to our plate was good, but the biscuit was a little hard like it had set out for a little while. I thought it was ironic given the name of the place. The waiter also left a lot to be desired. My two friends had to ask for a refill on their tea even though their glasses were empty when the server came by. I did not ask for a refill on my Coke even though I needed one and did not get it. Waiter got a 15% tip from me when I normally tip at 25% if not 30%. My friends said they will not go back. I have always wanted to try this place because it's so popular back home in NC so I figured I'd try it out here in Columbia. I've heard so many good things about it and my daughter wanted to go out for breakfast so this was the perfect time. It is in five points so parking may be a little difficult during busy hours but luckily I was able to find a park right in front. We were sat down and they had a kids menu and regular menu. My daughter got the kids waffle with an apple juice and I ordered her a side of bacon since it doesn't come with a side and I got the piedmont omelet with no onions. My daughter's waffle came with powdered sugar, blueberries and strawberries. She said her food was so good she practically ate the whole thing and said everything was her favorite lol. The waffle was crisp and fluffy, the fruit was fresh and her bacon was really crispy just the way we like it. My omelet was a big one ! It had filling all throughout the omelet instead of just in the center which made it better to eat. The egg needed a little seasoning so I just popped some pepper on top and put some hot sauce and it was so good. It had bacon and chicken sage sausage with cheese and every bite had nice flavor. I had a side of fruit with mine and the fruit was fresh and was a nice palette cleanser for my omelet. I think we rate it a 9/10 for the food we got. We will definitely be back. read more

My vanilla latte was up-charged 6% (which is not a lot) but the annoying part is the menu is not updated and items are actually more expensive than displayed. My latte was also mostly ice and very watered down. As a party of 2, we waited maybe 10 minutes to be seated, not bad!
