I had a great first impression, as the ambiance reminds me of other places I've enjoyed. However, the entree was mediocre. I had the trout "garlic and butter" style, and I tasted my friend's snapper that was also garlic and butter style. The flavors of these fish were "fishy taste" and "fishy texture." The best part of my dish was the beans and rice, followed by the veggies. Obviously, that leaves the entree as the worst part of the dish. The saving grace for this restaurant is its desserts. I had a fried coconut pie a la mode. It was fantastic. If I ever return to this restaurant, which I am certain will not happen, it would be to have a refreshing and tasty fried pie. The killing factor here, however, is the price. The aforementioned dessert was about $5. That's pretty pricy! The dinner itself ought to have been cheaper. read more

We enjoyed both the trout and the gulf red, as they came out got and fresh! The self-serve counter was clean the place didn't smell fishy and the staff greeted everybody with a smile. The coleslaw has a nice crisp to it and is not overly creamy. Price point as you'd expect 10 to 15 a head for the non-deep-fried foods. On a separate occasion I enjoyed the fish tacos as the fish was crispy not oily and the dipping sauce on par. The outdoor seating is really a nice experience in the spring and fall during the summer way too hot. The location being very central to downtown makes it a perfect afternoon if you have to do anything like serve jury duty. read more

We ate here for the first time today and it was absolutely great! We got the Catfish 6 big order to-go. The fish pieces are a good size, whole box of fries and delicious hush puppies. I'm not a fish fan but I'll go with Hubs when he's craving it. Their chicken strips are pre-breaded and frozen (eww) and I'm not a fan of them at all. However, Hubs really likes the shrimp and catfish so I am taking that into consideration. If they offered a nice grilled whitefish fillet I would certainly be interested in trying it, but right now they do not. read more

My boyfriend and I came here with my friends one night, it was perfect, we got a table outside of the picnic tables and it was great weather with a great sunset. I was the odd one out (the only one that doesn't like seafood) but I always don't mind going somewhere I don't like if they have something for me to eat and you don't make me it seafood, I'm ok with it! I stuck it safe and had the Cheeseburger and fries. And everyone else got a little Catfish, Oysters and Ceviche. Everyone's food was delicious ( I took their word for it). LOL I enjoyed mine, along with hushpuppies and fries. I recommend everyone coming here it's a great place to relax outside with some drinks and good food, at an affordable price. Environment/Service: A nice restaurant that opened up when Arlington decided to step up the downtown environment. Unlike a few other restaurants in this area, Flying Fish has its own parking lot (limited, but it still exists). It's a casual restaurant with swampy/outdoorsy decor that will make any redneck do back flips. I only come here when others suggest to do so, because it has never impressed me. There are daily specials that go on throughout the week, so you can get some really great deals on some seafood. They also offer punch cards, and UTA students also get a 20% discount when you show your student ID. The staff here is friendly, but every time I visit, there's the same guy at the register who is always super unenthusiastic. I almost want to leave every time because he acts like he hates his job. Always rushes me when I order and never greets me in any way. If I'm paying you, I expect at least a smile and "thank you", but it has yet to happen. Food: I have to admit that the food here isn't bad, but I also have not tried a good portion of the menu. Nearly everything that I have tried has been fresh; I never had an issue with old/improperly stored seafood from here. The fried catfish is good, but I found it a bit bland without any kind of sauce. Raw oysters were always fresh. The kids' meals come on a cute little paper boat. Really, it's a nice place for the family. Flying Fish emphasizes their seafood, but I really like the french fries here. Sometimes I order a side of them just because they're fresh and have a great, crispy texture. However, I have to mention that I ordered salmon during my last visit and the dish was overcooked. Salmon was rather dry and had a chewy texture. If anything, I prefer for my fish to be undercooked. Portion sizes aren't too large here either. Expect good food on sticky, greasy tables and mediocre service. I wouldn't recommend unless you were desperate for seafood and you were stuck in downtown Arlington. read more

I like to come here when I'm in the mood for some crab and shrimp. It isn't the best but it isn't usually as crowded as the other places in the area. And let's face it, there aren't too many options for crab in north Arlington. There always tends to be an older crowd here. I don't mind that, as they aren't too rowdy. There used to be a struggling furniture resale store here. It is nice to see some life breathed into this location. It is across from Arlington's downtown post office. Well I went in today. I am not a fan of seafood. I asked about the red beans & rice and the fella at the register w/ the beautiful blue eyes told me the ingredients, then offered to let me taste it. I tasted it & it was nasty. He did mention that they have beer, but they taste like beer. No thanks. I said thank you and quickly exited. I thought about trying the fried jalapenos, but maybe next time. I wish this place great success. Perhaps Luis will like it since he loves seafood. 6/23/11 We ate here last night b/c it is close to our apt. and it was 9:30 pm. I don't like most fish so I ordered the burger & fries. The burger was HORRIBLE:( It was thin and tasteless, between (2) pieces of dry bun. I never get mayo. The bottom bun was so wet that I thought they'd put mayo on it. I just peeled that soggy untoasted bottom piece of bread & trashed it. The fries did not have any taste either. Luis got the Mexican shrimp cocktail. He was appalled to find pieces of lettuce in it? He will continue to go to Los Jarros on Randall Mill for shrimp cocktail. I did love the cushion on the chairs. It is so plush! Too bad they don't have any food to enjoy the chairs with. The food here is just okay and the prices are not overly expensive. The prices range $10-20 per plate. If you throw in an appetizer and beverage, the cost can run $25 per person for a casual meal. There are much better options, in my opinion. We've dined here on many occasions because it's close and convenient. However, we've never joined family or friends here. It's not a bad place... it's just okay. They have a "Mudbugs" banner and I ordered a pound my last visit. Expensive - $7.95 - per pound. They were steaming when I picked them up and the aroma was disgusting. It was evident live and dead crawfish were cooked together straight from the sack, unwashed, and the rotten crawfish seasoned the batch. Appetite killer. And probably a stomach killer if I ate them. When they grilled my fish far overdone and very dry for the first time, and I tell them wow they overcooked my fish really bad and it's very dry and this is the first time it's happened, the response I got was "oh ok" ...Wait what?!!! Let me. Start by saying the service was okay . I didn't understand why they brought other people their food and I had to pick mine up from the counter. The Food: Soo I only ate the crawfish cause I was hungry. But they weren't that good . The seasoning sucks . It had so much cayenne pepper I coked ! The crawfish was bland . Love the catfish baskets! Seen this place many times on Abrams, but never stopped in there to eat. I had some BOGO coupons from Valpak in the snail mail, so the wife and I thought we'd give it a try. We like! I always go for the catfish basket. Comes with fries and hush puppies. Tried the catfish po'boy once, but didn't care for it because it was mostly bun and veggies and very little fish. Wife loves the grilled salmon plate. Comes with grilled zucchini, grilled yellow squash and beans and rice. Salmon is juicy, not dry and seasoned well. Grilled veggies are awesome. 2:30pm on Thursday. Not busy at all. Very friendly service. Unlike a place like Razzoos, which seems to be a "cajun" environment created by a marketing team, this place seems authentic--like a place you'd actually walk into on the gulf coast. The food? Meh. Not bad, but nothing special either. I had the shrimp po'boy and my wife had the fish tacos. I asked her how she liked her food and she also gave me the "meh" shrug. She is picky, and if she doesn't like something she won't eat it--so at least the food was good enough for her to finish. So, 4 1/2 for environment, 3 1/2 for food. We've been coming to Flying Fish for a few years now and we really enjoy our time there. The food is good and the atmosphere is relaxing. The only complaint is the employees that work the register. They always seem to be in such a bad mood. They never welcome you, or say thank you and just act like you're an inconvenience to them. Just bad customer service. read more

Moving to Arlington from the Gulf Coast, I really wanted a good enough seafood place to go. After my third try I give up on this one. I have forgiven the soupy sauces, the ketchup replacing cocktail sauce, the overpriced and small portions fish, but I just can't get past the rudeness of its staff. I have never seen employees who hate their job as much as these folks ( including fast food workers and garbage men). Maybe everyone else just expects this but I can't handle it. I realize that this reads like a disgruntled customer that had a falling out with employees, but I have managed to slip through. If you're thinking of donating a Billy Bass to them, don't even bother. I looked online to see if they do anything special, because I thought it would be a fun experience for the kids. It said they give you a free basket of catfish and put your name on the wall, but upon going and presenting our fish they didnt mention anything about a free meal, just took the toy, asked our order and charged full price. There was no fanfare or big deal made. I had to ask the busboy how we go about giving someone our names, so he gave the kids a piece of trash to write on. I say, if they don't want people giving them those things, they shouldn't make it their whole gimmick. If I ever went back (unlikely), I bet it wouldn't even be on the wall. Food was basic. We love this restaurant! It's a casual, down-home Texas fish joint, as the description says on their website. Love the music! I always have the grilled snapper plate, but switch out the slightly-spicy beans for new red potatoes and grilled squash. There is a lot to choose from for your sides and switching those out isn't a problem. I've also had the fried catfish basket and there were three large pieces of fish, fries, and hush puppies which were all great. The fried pickles can be a bit salty, but they are pickles, after all. The onion rings are huge and delicious. The hush puppies are crispy outside and soft inside. The food is plentiful and the service is fast. Everything appears and tastes like it was just made. I work in downtown Arlington, and have eaten here multiple times. I find the food to be a consistently good value, particularly since you don't have a real wait staff that calls for a tip. It is a place you should consider if you are looking for lunch that is one or two notches up from the burger and Tex-Mex joints nearby. It isn't Pappadeux's, but it doesn't have a Pappadeux price, either. It is on my rotation for at least once a week, just because of its proximity to my office and the health aspect of eating fish more often (though the fried catfish is excellent). I put "moderate" as the price range, but you can get out for less than $10 pretty easily if you are budget conscious. I typically eat the salmon and a drink for something like $13. read more

I'm always hesitant to get salmon at restaurants because usually it's very oily and buttery but it wasn't. The veggies that came with it were sliced zucchini and yellow squash (my fav). I ordered the grilled salmon salad for a to-go lunch and had it "snappy". This was hands-down the best to-go salad I've ever had. The sun-dried tomato dressing is delicious and has deep flavor. The salmon was seasoned perfectly and cooked exactly right. When they packaged it up, they put the warm fish in a separate container so it wouldn't wilt the salad.
