Absolutely awful! Food was extremely salty, I came on a Friday around 3pm. I got the whole chicken wings, greens, and candied yams. I sent the greens back because they were so salty to the point I couldn't make it work if I tried. The chicken was salty too but I pulled the skin back and ate it as I was hungry and needed some type of food. Went to Southern Eats with the family and it was a cool spot. I got the Chicken fried chicken with greens and red beans and rice. My chicken fried chicken was salty so I switched it out for whole wings (perfect choice). My wife got the catfish with yams and black eyed peas. The peas were definitely purple hull and the fish portions were extremely small. The highlight of the experience was our waiter Jeremiah. J was well mannered and took good care of us. There was no wait time when we arrived, was able to be seated right away....according to the reviews the amount of time that it takes to receive your food is longer than usual. We were told twice that the wait would be a little longer than normal....15 mins longer. I think we waited about 45 mins for out food. I had the salmon and eggs that was supposed to come with breakfast potatoes (new potatoes) but received what appeared to be over cooked French fries. The salmon was slightly over cooked as well which made it dry...the order also came with a pancake that was ok. The Tennessee omelet was good, it was filled with brisket and vegetables. The tea is veryyy sweet and I felt dizzy after drinking a class. It was really really sweet. I think they need to fine tune some things in the kitchen as far as the food is concerned. This will ensure that you get what you ordered (correct potatoes and salmon cooked correctly) and that the food comes out in a timely fashion. OMG chicken sweet n Spicy was worth the wait! This is a great restaurant if you have at least two hours to spare. I came in around 10:50 they were still on breakfast/brunch. I really wanted the shrimp n grits so I decided to wait. A new server had taken over at this time. He seemed like he was new and nervous. So I was sure to be empathetic to both of our needs. Southern Eats is a newly established restaurant found in South Arlington, Texas. It sits in one of the newer shopping strips on Cooper, near Sublett. From the outside looking in, you can imagine what awaits inside. Once inside the establishment you enter a nice bright atmosphere. The décor was on point, celebrating Halloween. As I was told by the staff, they were throwing a Halloween party later that night. The music in the background played a little too loud. My girlfriend and I were greeted by a wait staff member once we entered the main dining area and took our seats. Our waiter handed us a paper menu booklet to order from. The restaurant also provides a QR code you could scan with your mobile device to view an online menu. Due to COVID-19, the restaurant had a limited number of guests during our visit. Only another couple were dining in, besides us. I ordered the three-piece fried catfish with candied yam, fried okra, hush puppies, and a 16-ounce frozen margarita. I requested for my fried okra to be prepared extra crispy. My girlfriend ordered the meatloaf, mashed potatoes, collard greens, and a 24-ounce frozen margarita. When the food arrived at our table, I was in shock to see the portion size. I apologize for not supplying a photo of the food for this review. But due to the shock I forgot to do so. The catfish were strips and small ones at that. They were lightly breaded and seasoned with cornmeal. But had a nice flavor. To be very honest, I expected three full size fillets for the price of $14.99. The hushpuppies did not come with the catfish meal. I added them as a side item for an additional $3.99. To be honest, I wish I had left this item off. They were premade hushpuppy sticks. Nothing Southern about them at all! What's wrong with making hushpuppies from scratch? Candied yams were okay. Small in size. They appeared to come from a can. They did not appear to be fresh yams. Too much syrup in the little, small bowl. Fried okra was a miss, as well. They did not arrive extra crispy, as I had requested. My frozen margarita was okay. It was missing the alcohol flavor and it appeared to be 12-ounces vs 16-ounces for $8.50. With tax, I spent $29.70 for a meal that was not worth the price. My girlfriend was not impressed with her meatloaf. She was disappointed and complained about the price point for the quality of food received. The only thing she enjoyed was her frozen margarita. My star rating for this experience is a 2 ¾ out of 5 stars. The staff (including the owner), the atmosphere, and their web presences are great! This restaurant has potential but need to work on the quality of the food to match their price point. I would recommend the owner use fresh ingredients and truly make things from scratch. Do not use short cuts. Hire a professional chef vs someone who just enjoys cooking. It would make a world of difference. I give this restaurant a school grade "C."
